Wow! That is beautiful! I hope to be that far along at my 2 year mark...I love that you talk over your video. There are a lot of amazing woodworkers out there who don't talk and I have a hard time watching them because I wish they would explain their reasoning and thoughts behind what they're doing. Keep it up
Get you a sheet of 3/4" plywood and lay on top of the tablesaw. That's what I do and it helps a ton to have that extra surface. Stays on tablesaw all the time unless it's being used and then it's easy to simply lean up against the wall until you're done......And holy cow! That piece turned out amazing. Well done!
That is a beautiful plaque! Well done! I am a woodworker who now lives in Arkansas but I lived in Colorado Springs for 27 years and sold at many events there such as Spring Fest, Territory Days, Folk Art Festival at Rock Ledge Ranch, etc. I miss being able to go to CO Lumber and buy pretty much any type of wood imaginable. I lived in Banning Lewis Ranch on the East side of town. It's great to see a quality woodworker from Colorado Springs on TH-cam. I wish you the best of luck with your channel.
one trick I have found to keep purpleheart purple and redhart red and yellowhart.... well you get the idea is dye of the appropriate color. it doesn't change the color of the underlying wood-generally I can't tell the difference between dyed and undyed wood. however the dyed wood doesn't oxidize anywhere as fast as undyed wood. I use a water based dye. voice sounds fine
Beautiful. I have my first CNC on the way and have been using the wait time to learn the software. I decided to go with VCarve Pro for now. I’m curious, could you have decreased the step over on the finishing pass and / or used a smaller diameter bit to decrease the sanding required? Obviously would make the carve longer but… god I hate sanding LOL
Nice outcome. Gluing the flag and plaque into a recess with no room for expansion of the wood could be an issue depending upon a customer's home humidity levels.
I thought your commentary was really good and the right amount. There are always bits of info either about the products, machinery, or wood itself that needs some details explained. I really enjoyed the video. The CNC made quick work of the waves. This is my first video of yours I have watched so I wasn’t expecting the CNC to do that part. I do have a question and it isn’t a criticism. When you were ripping your pieces for the stripes why didn’t you set up a sacrificial fence and set your width of cut to 1/2” so you didn’t have to move the blade? Thanks for sharing the video. I look forward to more in the future
Great point! I thought about doing that as it's a preferred way of doing those types of cuts. I was in the moment, and I knew they were going into the drum sander anyways for a quick clean-up. Cheers!
2nd video of yours I've watched and just as impressive as the first!!! 2 years experience?!?!?! Pretty sure you fooled everyone watching...you're stuff is that of a seasoned pro! Well done!!!
You can talk all you want. IMHO your voice is just fine. Nice to see another Colorado Maker! Oh and the build is just wonderful. Thanks for sharing. New sub here.
Dude, your videos are great and the discussion style voiceover is spot on. You mentioned not having a dedicated workbench and use your table saw. Try taking a nice piece of flat plywood or MDF and double it up to 1.5" thick and cut it to fit your TS front to back or a little over then however wide you want it. Then put a runner on the bottom to fit the miter slot. Put a couple of stop blocks at the end of the runner to make it "lock" in when you set it down. Then you could put in some T-track or 20mm or 3/4" dog hole like an MFT. Wax it up and it would make a great work surface and TS table protector.
Great video! Awesome plaque! When you explain what you are doing as you do it is far superior to ones where the author takes 5 to 10 minutes to tell you what they are going to do, before doing anything! I am a new subscriber.
Nice design. I do have a few suggestions on the stars to make it look better and save you time. First, if your software permits, I suggest projecting the star v-carve onto the 3D surface of the flag. This will keep all the star sizes the same and at the same depth. Second, I suggest painting the stars before sanding the flag as this will save you an additional sanding step (unless you really like sanding - lol). Steve
Thanks for the tips! Fusion360 has been a pain for 3D modeling. I was able to use the pencil tool that projected the star cutouts with the 3D surface. I think my zero was funky moving into it. The biggest thing was I over sanded the stars which gave that size differences between them. Anything to prevent more sanding is definitely worth looking into. Side note, my next one, I'll leave the stepover greater, giving it larger defined machine marks. I think this will give it a cool texture that almost mimics cloth. It's worth a try. Thanks again for the feedback! Cheers!
@@EricksonWoodworking I tried the CAM portion of Fusion 360 and MeshCam for Alibre. Having already been using Vectric V-Carve Pro for about a year, both of these CAM programs seemed obtuse and difficult to use. The downside to Vectric is that it is not a CAD program.
Absolutely beautiful! I am sure whoever received that piece was ecstatic. I thought the sound quality was great, and your woodworking skills are excellent. Great job.
Thank you for a most excellent video. I learned a lot. I do a lot of projects and own a CNC Mill (5 axis), CNC laser, all the major woodworking shop tools. You've inspired me to make this project! I'm retired military (US Army Ranger) so the American Flag is very important to me.
That is an UREAL flag quite amazing. The audio and your commentary was just fine keep it up. I do have a question: I noticed you planed the boards what appeared to be quite flat did you have to run them through the jointer?
Thanks! I ran everything through the planner to get everything flat, but because I was using Curly Maple I decided not to use the jointer to join the edges together. I used my drum-sander which prevented tear out as Curly Maple is brittle. Thanks for watching!!!
Great Great Job ! Sound is great,, no Background or static,, nice and clear ! But the Plaque id awesome ,,, I'm Positive who ever recieved it was Touched and very appreciative ,,, and Bottom line , that's worth it all !
Love this! Would you be willing to share your Fusion file? I want to make something similar for my dad (a veteran), and while I’ve seen a few examples of flags out there, I like the pattern yours uses to carve. And your voice is great, btw.

Talking is like your woodworking and video work. The more you do, the better you become. What is the URL of the flag website you mentioned and where did you find that Star file? Adding things like that in video or description enhance your channel.
Absolutely! I put the links to the flag file and the flag calculation in the description. Next time I’ll call those out as a reminder. I rarely look in video descriptions, so I can definitely relate. I am new to the cnc universe , I own an axiom elite ar8 . I use v carve pro and I am also learning that software. What I see as a huge stumbling point for me would be the undulations in the wood when doing those stars , I am loving the wavy flag it looks so cool. I live in phoenix and this is my off season from wood working. One question , how to you avoid the color bleed when sanding I have done glue ups with a maple and colored woods and I have had some sanding bleed of the colors. I will take your sanding sealer trick and bank it that looks like the best way I have ever seen to fill small voids . thank you for sharing and I wish you much success in your creative and TH-cam journey.
Robert you are absolutely right! Bleeding is a serious concern, especially working curly maple next to Redheart. Redheart’s deep red sawdust tints everything around. The reason it took me so long sanding, was I had my dust collection system dedicated to my sander, and changed the sand paper quite frequently to prevent that from happening. Even with all the prep to address this, it still tinted the maple, BUT it worked in my favor has it gave a weathered effect that looks pretty cool.
Outstanding workmanship! Well done. I'm not a fan of the purpleheart, however. I think I bit thicker frame made with the same oak you used for the plaque would look richer. Just my two cents, but overall your skills are on point. (Wish I had room for a CNC, that's pretty sweet.)
Thanks!! If you are in the position or on the fence about getting a CNC, I would highly recommend getting one! There’s so much you can do with it and a lot of fun using! Carbide3D makes a whole laundry list of different sized machines, from desktop to larger bench top machines. Best decision I’ve ever made for my woodworking journey 🤓
Awesome job, looks great! Any tips on finding good lumber? I have been trying to get into wood working projects but can't find hardwood that isn't a mortgage payment.
I'm a huge fan of local lumber yards and also, if you have one in your area, Woodcraft always has great selections of different wood species. They go out of their way to make sure they're lumber is within the right moisture count to work different projects.
amazing work, if you ever feel inclined I would love to understand how you programmed the cnc to make the "wavy" stars. if you did the stars and then the curves of the flag, the stars would come out distorted, I don't understand how you programmed it to work. really impressed
You might consider getting some good neodymium magnets to hold down your parchment paper, so you don't have to keep wasting blue tape? Also, The Wood Whisperer did a good video on the Harbor Freight parallel clamps if you need to supplement the Besseys.

You do a great job narrating. I found this video very informative and entertaining.
