Thank you Drew!! I liked you video! Also I'm not sure how did you do business in Iran, but most of the people do not carry or use cash and pay with debit cards. Taxis, underground trains, BRT buses etc all use cards. And all are domestic Iranian system. As you said no major credit cards work in Iran. You could also exchange your cash dollar with prepaid cash cards in Iran as well like gift cards. Fun fact is ALL the Iranian cash cards work with ALL the ATMs and there is no transaction fees, withdrawal fees or transfer fees. None of the banks in Iran also charge any maintenance fee no matter the amount of your balance or account activity. Banks pay between 7-10% interest on checking accounts and more on savings accounts. On the other hand there is no credit system and checks mostly work as timely payments when you want to pay late for something. They just write the future date on the check and hand it over. Iran is full of surprises if you go there! I promise you. And actually the good ones! ;-)

He was visibly distraught and nervous about that whole situation and Iran's confusing currency system had become a double whammy. I'm glad I resolved at least a part of his problem by explaining how our currency works.
Actually the last part is totally wrong. Iranians don't rely that much on cash. Foreigners do because foreign credit cards are not accepted by local businesses. The reason for that is Iran's political isolation and America's long-term policy of keeping Iran a pariah state. Hence companies such as Visa or Mastercard have no agreements in place with Iranian banks. Having said that, Iranians themselves heavily rely on debit cards and use them everywhere to pay for everything.
*You take out a wad of cash for them to count?! Be careful they don’t rip you off!* Edit: I would be cautious in any market in any country, not any particular one.

First of all thanks for the video Drew. I want to post an update to the video : In May 2020 Iranian parlement decided to finally change the currency to Tuman (So one zero here) and the new Tuman equals 10.000 current Iranian Rials (3 zeros here). So in the video you said the shopkeeper asked for 2 Tumans and he actually meant 20.000 Rials. The new currency will make that 2 Tumans official. I hope it helps us not to have the most confusing currency ever 👌🏻👌🏻
@@sam-gv9qw So the official currency is dirham. but the currency we use when in public is rial which is worth 5 cents. so when you want to buy something in morocco and they say give me 40 they mean 2 dirhams. it gets more complicated when talking about big sums of money. when you ask someone how much he bought a car for and he says 20 million, he doesnt mean 20 million, dirhams, or rials, he means franks, which is equal to one cent. So that car is worth 200000 dirhams not 20 million. its so weird.
I just came back from Iran and got an exchange rate of $1 = 160k rials. We were so confused because google said the rate was ~50k and we were getting x100 in our favor! We basically spent our first 3 days in Tehran having absolutely no idea how much money we had. For the record we took a 1h taxi ride + 2h wait + 1h back for 1.2 million. Yes .... currency will be always confusing ...but drew u are the true vloger u will show the real side of the nation's....and your explanation is quite simple easy....
You certainly haven't come to Morocco then. The official currency is dirham. But in the north, the use Ryal or Franc 1dirham=100franc=2Ryal. In the rest of Morocco, they usually use Ryal, but they have a different Ryal than the north. 1dirham=100franc=2Northern Ryal=20Southern Ryal. Now. Is there a currency system more confusing than this?

Here in Italy for 3 years (1999/2001)before officially adopting Euro in 2002,we experienced a similar situation:the official currency was the Italian Lira, but at the same time Euro began to be used. €1=2000 Italian Liras. Many of the things we bought during those years had 2 prices written, one in Euro and the other one in Liras. I still have some books who have on the cover those 2 prices (eg.€5=10000£)!!!
Zimbabwe doesn't have the highest inflation. Hungary had the highest inflation ever recordes with the Hungarian Pengő. The highest banknote was something rediculous like 5 Quintillion!!!
In fact, the 500,000 Rial bill you showed is not a bank note at all. It's a unified travellers' check. The highest denomination Iranian banknote is 100,000 Rial or 10,000 Toman or as they say it in Iran, just 10 Toman. Edit: _(just for Yousef Noori)_ traveller's cheque 😋👍
By the way, "unified travellers' check", you used both American and British English in the same sentence, make up your mind. "Travellers" is spelled "Travelers" in American English, and "Travellers" in British English. Likewise, you "Check" is spelled "Check" in American English, and "Cheque" in British English. Otherwise, your grammar is perfect. I don't mind if you use either American or British, just not both in the same sentence, please. So it should be either "unified travelers' check" in American English, or "unified travellers' cheque" in British English.
In France after WWII, currency got inflated and in 1960 they changed 100 Old Francs into 1 New Franc (bills had NF on them). But people still thought the old way and often with an unfamiliar price you had to ask "old ones or new ones?" So if a Frenchman used a slang term and said "20.000 balles", he was talking about 200 NF. Then France helped found the E.U. and switched to Euros, which each is worth more than a US dollar currently.
When I worked at tourist destination in CA, travelers from around the world all use to hand my their USD cash or wallets to take what was needed to pay the bill as well. It was charming from my point of view. "All same color 🤷♀, haha. " I took joy and honor in serving them because I know what it's like to be in their shoes. Very considerate video clip, Drew! Merci. 🤘
Its not a bit confusing, if you know that "k" means thousand. The abbrevation is so popular and simple, that it is even used in video games. " I have 1k coins" There is also the more rarely used "kk", which stands for million. But as far as I know this one is only used in video games. And like already said its rare, because there is already "m" or "mil" for million.
One of my fellow scientist was from iran and she always used to explain me how much she spent back at iran and the amount always made my eyes pop...but this video explains a lot

Back in 2005 România switched from ROL to RON, and both currencies were in circulation for one year (or two?).... So they basically cut of 4 zeros from the banknotes. One dollar was 40000 ROL and changed to only 4 RON. And the confusion was started, but to make it even more difficult people were using values interchangeably and some shorthand notations as well.
I just went there for 5 days trip and same thing happens with I was too much confused about there currency. I even can't keep 100 USD dollar. Which I had changes to Irani currency. But anyhow I enjoyed alot my fam trip
What does this Video have to do with Saudi or UAE, let alone Visas lol.. first of all it's if there was an entry stamp to Israel on your passport.. Second, Saudi Arabia requires a visa so they will tell you in your country's embassy whether you can go or not... Third, They've become more flexible regarding this issue and will no longer use it if Israel makes peace with Palestine.
La France Israel doesn't administer passport visas anymore because of their poor relations with other countries. It's been that way for a few years, and it's a good thing too bc I have family in Israel/Palestine, Jordan, UAE and other middle eastern countries and it makes traveling a lot easier
They remove just one zero to make it Tuman. What's the benefit, atleast the difference should be 1000 rial = 1 Tuman. Then there'll be no need to shorten the currency name too. Don't you think?!
Have u ever been in Cambodia? The system there is very mad. They use 2 currencies at the same time: Cambodian Riel and USDolar. And 1 Dolar is the same as 4000riel. So if u wanna get a beer, which costs 2000 riel, you can pay with 1 dolar and they'll give u 2000riel back. Or if something costs 6000riel, jist pay 1 dolar + 2000 riel. Or something costs 10000 riel, you can pay 2 dolar + 2000 riel or 1 dolar + 6000 riel. Pretty fun actually
I think people make systems for money but sometime it get to complex to fully get it, so they try to cover up or find a best way to do it, which is pretty cool but it still doesn’t change the fact on how confusing things can be in the world and that follow for outsider places around the world.
It's now even more attractive due to huge currency value decrease. You can buy one reservation of a great food from restaurant for only 2 dollars. You can buy banana 1 dollar for one kilogram, you may fetch 1k us dollars and do anything!

Amazing, very informative, thanks so much Drew
The highest inflated currency in history is Hungarian pengő,
People were sweeping it on streets like it was just dirt :)
Venezuala
In fact, the 500,000 Rial bill you showed is not a bank note at all. It's a unified travellers' check. The highest denomination Iranian banknote is 100,000 Rial or 10,000 Toman or as they say it in Iran, just 10 Toman.
Edit: _(just for Yousef Noori)_ traveller's cheque 😋👍
BTW, it's 10 Toman and not 10 Tomans. (Persian language is like that)
So the largest bill is just $2, god.
It is a bank note, if you go to an atm it will give you 50T notes (500,000 IRR)
Stop talking like you know anything
By the way, "unified travellers' check", you used both American and British English in the same sentence, make up your mind. "Travellers" is spelled "Travelers" in American English, and "Travellers" in British English. Likewise, you "Check" is spelled "Check" in American English, and "Cheque" in British English. Otherwise, your grammar is perfect. I don't mind if you use either American or British, just not both in the same sentence, please. So it should be either "unified travelers' check" in American English, or "unified travellers' cheque" in British English.
Yousef Noori Thank you that is helpful.
In Germany, the most people still pay with cash. Many don't trust these cards

"I've handled some *REALLY HIGH INFLATED* currencies....

I Visited Iran, Yes, Absolutely Iranian Currency Also Confusion . So Funny 😁😀😀😀
Well we get confused as well in our own country
When I worked at tourist destination in CA, travelers from around the world all use to hand my their USD cash or wallets to take what was needed to pay the bill as well. It was charming from my point of view. "All same color 🤷♀, haha. " I took joy and honor in serving them because I know what it's like to be in their shoes. Very considerate video clip, Drew! Merci. 🤘
This happens to me every time that I visit morocco too! The price could be in dirhams, riyals or even french francs! So confusing 😫
Indonesia also have similar system, like 5.000 rupiah but people only call it "5K" for short.
Ernest Jay omg..I was in Batam last December AND IT WAS A NIGHTMARE but hey,at least some shops accept Singapore currency too :)
K means thousand
5K means the same as 5.000. I think the more accurate would be like 100.000 and people would just say “100” to make it simple
Ernest Jay Resistors as currency
Its not a bit confusing, if you know that "k" means thousand. The abbrevation is so popular and simple, that it is even used in video games. " I have 1k coins"
There is also the more rarely used "kk", which stands for million. But as far as I know this one is only used in video games. And like already said its rare, because there is already "m" or "mil" for million.
One of my fellow scientist was from iran and she always used to explain me how much she spent back at iran and the amount always made my eyes pop...but this video explains a lot

Dick Artist 👍🏻👍🏻
You will, someday 🌚
Apparently airline workers are getting free one way trips. You'll have to fly the plane yourself though....
Then you took and arrow to the knee
very informative, thanks
The title should be...WORLDS MOST CONFUSING CURRENCY BECAUSE OF U.S SUPREMACY
No, it's confusing for anyone that goes there that isn't familiar with the Iranian currency. You can't blame everything on America
also because of Iran's sold-out leaders.
@Planet Earth The earth in your profile is not flat.
0:19 my country
Same
Back in 2005 România switched from ROL to RON, and both currencies were in circulation for one year (or two?)....
Why is this in my recommendation now 🤣
I literally got an ad of one of your own videos before this
Wait if they don't have ATMs that accept foreign payment how did he exchange his cash?
In Iran I'll do quick maffs
Very interesting
You better not go to Israel before Saudi Arabia or UAE or else they will refuse your visa if they see Israel on the passport.
NEVER_AGAIN Hopefully, It happens... We also Saudis and Emiratis consider Hamas to be a terrorist organization that is backed by Iran and Qatar..
NEVER_AGAIN we are at war with the Iranian militias in Yemen not Yemen.. I really wish for peace to happen and things progress in the ME:) shalom.
La France
Very good.
Israel is a terrorist state
They remove just one zero to make it Tuman. What's the benefit, atleast the difference should be 1000 rial = 1 Tuman. Then there'll be no need to shorten the currency name too. Don't you think?!
Prashant Kumar ,is like 100 pennies =$1.00 that simple.
10000 Rial = 1 Tuman
Zaid Altimimi wait how much does a breakfast cost?
Thank you very much for this great informations 🙏🏽😘
you look like Mark Zuckerberg
redhead version
Have u ever been in Cambodia? The system there is very mad. They use 2 currencies at the same time: Cambodian Riel and USDolar. And 1 Dolar is the same as 4000riel. So if u wanna get a beer, which costs 2000 riel, you can pay with 1 dolar and they'll give u 2000riel back. Or if something costs 6000riel, jist pay 1 dolar + 2000 riel. Or something costs 10000 riel, you can pay 2 dolar + 2000 riel or 1 dolar + 6000 riel. Pretty fun actually
Correctly i need to pay tuktuk like $10 cause it was confusing and he can't speak English
I just subscribed your channel watching ur 20 videos.
00:18
I've handled some inflated currencies, like the *Vietnamese dong*
Hahahahaha .. this is truth
I was always confused in iran
Love Iran 🇮🇷 from Syria 🇸🇾
You are from syria??? was the Syrian capital Damascus badly destroyed by war ???
One hundred trillion dollars though 😂lol
2:00 wow. What a nice way to get ripped off
Yes xd
I think people make systems for money but sometime it get to complex to fully get it, so they try to cover up or find a best way to do it, which is pretty cool but it still doesn’t change the fact on how confusing things can be in the world and that follow for outsider places around the world.
Me and the boys before getting drafted
Laughts in Europe
There is no draft. It is the spread of fake news. The draft ended after the Vietnam War.
don’t go is the best advice
Great video
WWIII notes
0:28 incorrect actually
I'm pretty sure this was before venezuela or maybe germany was worse
Albanian mapper
Neither, it’s Hungary during 1946
@@fahoodie1852 never knew Bout that thanks
Albanian mapper
Yeah, not many do. It was horribly high
Iran is a very beautiful and it has a lot of historical places
It's bcus of the US
Wtf
the currnency is low because of the us, hard to understand?
aalleexx what did us do, please elaborate.
US sanctions have destroyed the Iranian economy therefore lessening the value of the Iranian currency.
Basic economics.
oh wow, i didn't know
GD bless u iran😻😻
bbe let me be your man 😂
David John wht🤔🤔😚😁
I swear when I traveled to Iran I was confused same like you 😂😂😂
I wanna move to Iran.
It's now even more attractive due to huge currency value decrease. You can buy one reservation of a great food from restaurant for only 2 dollars. You can buy banana 1 dollar for one kilogram, you may fetch 1k us dollars and do anything!
Don’t move to Iran it’s a bad country to live in but is good to visit
lol u got scammed i bought roughly the same amount for 200€
Drew Binsky: the Iranian money currency is the most confusing currency ever
