I think the most shocking part of filming this story is the fact that these coffin home dwellers are spending $200-400 USD per month for rent. It’s just a very sad situation for hundreds of thousands of local people in one of my favorite cities in the world 😌 The next time you go to Hong Kong and enjoy the 5-star amenities, don’t forget about these people!
Not to brag but my mortgage & insurance for 3B 1B in the US (Midwest) is around $600, locked in around 2017. It's shocking & sickening to me that some of these people pay almost 50-80% of the equivalant of my mortgage to RENT a coffin room. This is quickly becoming the reality for all large industrialized cities regardless of government. Hong Kong, Singapore, LA, NY. Tokyo. Many of these people could probably afford a better standard of living if they lived on mainland China somewhere but would there be jobs there for them?
The man sleeping without a mattress brought me to tears...When I moved to the flat I'm in right now, 4 years ago, I didn't have any money left after paying the down payment so I had to sleep on the floor for the first 2 weeks. I would use my winter jacket to soften the floor. I will never forget how miserable it felt and it was just for 2 weeks. This guys has been living like this for years. It's horrible. No one deserves to live in conditions like these.
@@jdelap06Sounds like wherever you're from they used their mattresses til they turned to dust God damn 😂😂 Not trying to be disrespectful im just imagining someone sleeping on a mattress that's turned to dirt, that would suck. Have anyone of you guys ever seen the old style hay beds? Where there's criss cross rope holding you up from tge floor with hay covering it? Sounds itchy. 😆
Coco is an absolute gem of a human being. Honestly they always say those who have the least give the most. Honestly made me tear up a little how kind this lady is. ❤️
Drew, thank you for bringing us Coco! What a sweet woman she is. She was so generous, even though she did not have much to share. She didn't flinch and bought you drinks. Amazing.
This video was in my recommendations and it brought me to tears. I have been stressing out with some things in my life but seeing people live this for most of their life made my problems seem so small. I wish for their healthy and happiness from the bottom of my heart and hope I can stay grounded for the rest of my life and help who ever needs it.
Coco is one of the amazing people out there, each moment she makes sure to show gratitude to whatever she has and makes sure the other person is feeling well inside. True to the word human being.
Absolutely LOVE Coco. She's just the sweetest. She wouldn't let you hold her bags for her because she's used to doing everything for herself, and she paid for you because she's a hospitable person.
when i saw that i wondered how much of it was hospitality and how much of it was also an understandable level of pride/stubbornness/ a need to do something herself. There's plenty of examples of people who have trouble accepting help because(for a number of reasons) they may see it as weakness, they may fear that people will hold the favour over their heads and they don't need or want that debt, and just sometimes being in a difficult/destitute situation when someone offers charity it can be a hit to the pride and really drive home/bring to the present the reality one might be distracting themselves from.
Coco warmed my heart. She reminds me so much of my grandma but 10x more lively haha! Please, can we get another video with Coco? I wanna see her being more spoiled, she’s such a sweet person and she really deserves the world ❤
I lived alone in a coffin home, also called cage home, for a short period of time when I was a young man struggling to survive in Hong Kong. The condition was brutal. It was literally a 4 feet by 7 feet cage with no window and no air-conditioning in the sweltering summer heat. But I never gave up hope. Now I'm living comfortably in a large apartment unit that I own in the USA. For people who are down on their luck but still have strong hope for a better life, I wish them well. Let love be their guiding light in the dark chapter of their lives.
@@Gw17bvp28f Actually, even when I was living in a cage home and struggling to survive, looking for a comfortable life was still not my primary goal in life. I was in revolt against the hypocrisy of the Christian religion that my parents forced me to follow and was searching desperately for people who share the love that I believed in. I found them in a rich family that let me live in their home temporarily with the referral of a college teacher who shared my love. My route out of poverty was not what I planned. I was a driving school instructor with meager income after I immigrated into the US. One day my car with a student inside was hit from behind by a reckless driver while we were stopping before a crosswalk with a pedestrian on it. Then the reckless driver just reversed and drove away. Fortunately, nobody was hurt but I was so frustrated that I quitted my job. It turned out that the accident was a blessing in disguise. Because after I quitted the job, I had lots of spare time to go on the internet. It was the knowledge that I acquired on the internet that enabled me to become the owner the property that I own now.
Miss Coco is such a bright and happy person. I'm literally crying because I often complain about life... I'm disappointed in myself. Miss Coco, Even with difficulties, she keeps a beautiful smile on her face. I ask God to bless her. I would like to meet her and tell her that she is an admirable person. I will change my way of looking at life later of this video. ❤
We’re looking at moving because we need a bigger place. I just don’t even have words after watching this. We’re all so privileged compared to so many others. I hope I never take space for granted again
Thank you so much for showing this part of Hong Kong. As a Hongkonger, I feel both saddened and ashamed. It's shocking to see those who speak English well, indicating they once studied and worked hard, now suffering in their old age. Our government, once among the richest, hasn't done enough to support those in need.
There are some reasons why they ended up there (not to say they deserve that)! One reason is marriage / family problem and the other is gambling / criminal activity / drug using and the last one is bankruptcy due to poor business! Many poor in HK were once rich people with bad planning! But some of them will eventually be assigned to some public housing! 🙏🏾
Truly tragic. People who justify this are evil. They are the same people who justify thousands of homeless British while all the council housing that the working class relied on is given to mass migrants
Also arrogant. The low class actually is more contempt toward others, especially mainland fellow Chinese. Their pride is based on looking down on others. Such hierarchy of humility/arrogance toward others is typical in tropical culture and social underclass, especially in southeast Asia. Northern cultures of cold climate tend to egalitarian and individualistic without such hierarchy, typical Mongols, northern europeans and other arctic people. Somehow upper class people in most society tend to behave more like northerners with individualism.
I speak Cantonese and he actually didn’t say “I have no plan, I’m waiting to die” he pretty much said “what’s the point of that question, that’s just a joke of a question.” 😔 The lady just wanted to make sure his message didn’t come off as hostile. Which is very sweet of her :)
honestly a lot of the questions do seem extremely tone deaf. like "what could you change in the past" and stuff; why ask things that you can't change anymore, and why ask these clearly destitute people to dump their traumas for the sake of content on the camera?
I feel it's a message to the next generation, so these places don't keep filling up.....be honest on where things went wrong to find a better way, but that could jst be an American mindset, I'm sure he meant no harm in it
@@KeeKeeNice Personally, I felt uncomfortable with those questions too. I've sure these people feel like failjures already, without being sort of shamed for it
I’ve seen similar comments but also wanted to just say that I really appreciate how sweet and thoughtful you are to everyone you come across! Very respectful when speaking to them and I love that you give them a cash gift for speaking with you ❤
Wow this really humbled me..I feel for these people that are living like this..i can’t imagine being an older person and sleeping on the floor w no mattress..thank you for being respectful to these people..they may be poor but are trying to survive
It is heartbreaking to see people living in these conditions. But it is important to be mindful that visitors to New York City, San Francisco, and many other places in the U.S. can find similar disparities of wealth and living conditions among Americans.
Thank you for always being respectful. You’re my favorite travel TH-camr simply because of how educated and respectful you are. I love that you educate us on things most people don’t. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
@@drewbinskyYes, you are, this time!! Thanks, Drew. HKers deserve a better public housing, like the Singaporeans. The government has more than enough money to do it. To be fair, there are only around 100-200K people from about of 7M people in HK live in such condition. They can be easily absorbed in mainland China, if they want to move there. But, yeah, HKers are too proud sometimes. And, the government needs to "manage" the real-estate cartel there in HK!!
Thank you for your effort to make this video! This insight of how people live is truly unique and shows the spirit of the people, which all things considered seems to not be broken. The lady towards the end of the video, Koko ( I think?) reminds me a lot of my grandma when I visit her (Lithuania). I know she hasn't got much money at all but she tries to be generous regardless and I end up having to guess what she'd like and go shop up for her to bring it in the car for her so she couldn't deny it as she normally goes and carries it all back home herself, like clean water (multiple 5L jugs), potatoes etc. Different continent, culture, country but still hits back home in terms of the human behavoir regardless of what part in the world it is.
I was at target tonight trying to decide if I wanted a winter themed throw blanket to hang on the side of a bench, Literally for decoration. Now I’m seeing people actually living in metal cages, in unsanitary living conditions, no ac or heat, not even a real bed. Im definitely not what I would consider rich but I still take so much for granted.
Comparison is the thief of joy. You understand what it is to live in those conditions, but you're a person with thoughts and feelings as well as everybody in this world. You shouldn't disregard your own needs/wants as you're also entitled to your opinion. You still have the human right to decide how you want your blanket. I think about the bigger picture: how you treat the person next to you... who could be going through something similar. Always be respectful, like our friend in the video.
atleast they chose it and have aircon. asian countries around china like phillippines where people live millions in cardboard boxes and homemade garbage with no aircon. if this is the slum in honkong then they luckier than others
@@leiferickson1016 Comparison is also the largest joy provoker, in my opinion. This really puts things into perspective and makes it so much 'easier' to be happy with what you have :)
Coco's English, like some the other residents, is very good! She could become a tour-guide (working as few/many hours as she wished) & charge international travellers for her local knowledge. I would pay to follow her round & listen to her all day! With just a little bit of upfront funding/marketing support, she could purchase an electric scooter to ease the physical strain of navigating & guiding paying customers. Travelling is always easier/more fun & culturally richer when you know someone local. Might even make her enough to rent somewhere bigger, although she has made a really nice job of her tiny-living space! My mother is 90 & still works part-time out of choice, it keeps her mentally & physically active, so anything is possible. Her tours could be called: Go-Coco!
Drew, thank you so much for showing this side of my hometown to the world. I really appreciate how respectful you were. Every time I watch videos like this, I feel blessed to have lived a comfortable life here, but am always reminded of how I could become homeless in an instant if an accident happens. Just a reminder, when handing out red packets or gifts, it is considered rude to use only one hand, so use two hands next time. You do get a “pass” as a foreigner, but this small change will definitely be appreciated.
Hi dear, I haven't been following your work for long but I find your approach, both to the people you meet and to the places, to be truly positive. You convey all the curiosity that drives you and it's truly fantastic, because the curiosity you show is the same that I feel and this gives me the opportunity to identify with your travel stories as if I were really there too. Thank you because you manage to make the melancholy that sometimes takes over go away, when I would like to be able to do what you do, but for various reasons it's not possible. I really like how you interact with people and I find the humanity that comes out of the people you interview incredible, it really creates a strong empathic bond. You really do a fantastic job, thank you for letting us participate.
This brings so much awareness to people all over the world. It’s so hard imagining having no choice to live this way. It’s gut wrenching. I loved Coco! If you made a go fund me I’d donate in a heart beat. I’m sure a lot of us would love to help bring a little happiness to these people. Thank you for showing us this. ❤
Coco seems so sweet. I've noticed the people that seem to have the least are the happiest. It's heartbreaking to imagine so many have to live like that. Very humbling video.
Poor means you’re down to basics, no worries about what to wear, bills of all sorts, managing all your “stuff.” You aren’t a slave to its maintenance, upkeep, and security. So long as you have food and some sort of shelter from the weather, it leaves freedom to expend on others, to get to know them.
@@mariekatherine5238thats not what poor means. Poor means you cab barely afford the 'basics' you mention. There's no so called 'freedom' when you have worries about expensive rent, no free movement to speak to people and get to know them due to your confined space, survival mode is not freedom, it's complete scarcity in all areas of possible abundance. A simple life cpuld call for the ease you describe, but not being poor. I don't think her life is 'simple' though either, having to deal with what she does on a daily basis. We only get a snippet of her life...what about dental, doctor, transportation to see family and friends, opportunities? She's sadly very poor and it's not the way humans are supposed to exist.
@@drewbinskyThis may be an unpopular opinion but I would rather your videos didn’t have such a high production value. It feels more like watching a TV show than a YT video. Your channel lost that personal feeling that made it so great, and your recent videos seem rushed like you’re just trying to pump out content at fast as possible. Sure the production value is great, but if I wanted to watch a TV show I would just watch the Travel channel instead.
I just finished watching this video and this definitely earned my subscription. My parents came to the US from HK long ago and "auntie" Coco definitely reminds me of my parents' and grandparents' friends. I'm not related to Coco, nor do I know her, but in Chinese culture, calling her "auntie" is a form of respect. I honestly felt like volunteering to translate for you and auntie Coco since I speak Cantonese at the native level even though I'm born and raised in the USA. 😊
It's heartbreaking to think about living in such tiny spaces. Hearing the story of the man without a mattress to sleep on is truly sorrowful. It's a powerful reminder to always be grateful for what we have, because no one deserves to live in such conditions.
My friend is from Hong Kong. He used to live in houses like this. He tells me stories of how he hated it for to all the tourists and he felt overwhelmed living in a house so small in a place so big. He’s brother died in these conditions. He finally moved to Bhutan for a year wich he found magical and so different but for a better opportunities they then decided to move to the uk where he met me ❤😊 You’re my favourite travle TH-camr drew and I aspire to do what you do one day❤

This is so heartbreaking. Your videos really make me so appreciative of what my family and I all have. I am so grateful. My heart just breaks for these people living in these conditions. I don't know what is worse? Being homeless or living there just like Drew said.Thank you for sharing and making me realize that when I think I have it bad, someone else has it worse. So truly sad.
Home. Less. Because when you're homeless every day you have to think about where you're going to sleep And where you're going to pee/ poo Extra decisions.
True. But you can tell she was uncomfortable with the shopping spree. At that point I just would’ve gave her the money and shit the cameras off. She can go buy it herself with no pressure
Coco has made my day, I was having a bad day and her happiness and lovely personality just made me feel a lot better. What a sweet lady, she deserves so much better.
Don't get me wrong, but even if you're a millionaire, how can you make this better? It is heartbreaking to see people living like this but imagine someone having 50 000 000 dollars in liquid cash...what can they do? You can buy like 2 apartment complexes for that which can house like 100 people. There are hundreds of thousands of people living in such conditions just in Hong Kong...tens of millions in the world. Yes, a handful of people own half the world's wealth, but rich people in general themselves cannot make a difference. Not without government's help. Fyi, 50 000 000 dollars in net worth would put you among top 0.0001% earners and all you can do with those money is to house only 100-150 people at most. If you wanna know how much it costs to take care of someone poor look at the US. 150 BILLION dollars a YEAR to take care of 10 million migrants. No matter how heartbreaking it is, you will never be able to take care of everyone and so you better use the money you have to help your own people. That's why I want migrants out. That's why I want 150 billion to be used to house tens of thousands of Americans that need help. It may sound harsh but if you think about it rationally, it is the most logical thing you can do. And the Hong Kong government should do the same thing.
I have to say hands down as I write this, to find a guy like you do this is courageous educational and humble. This is what social media should be, not consumed with vanity. THIS MESSAGE NEEDS TO GET OUT MONEY IS EVIL. Thank you for being one of a kind and showing the world of those less fortunate. I pray for all of them❤
I’m from Hong Kong. I really appreciate you making this video! This video truly reflects the hardships of the underprivileged in Hong Kong. They are strong but they need help!
I live in Hong Kong and I will never not be amazed and humbled by the resilience of the people that have to endure this hardship, coco is a true icon and deserves so much more, as do all people living in these conditions. I pray that the housing system will improve so these types of home become obsolete. in my village they have just built many transitional housing units so it is a step forward, but needs to be more and faster!
Coco is so sweet! She shows great generosity, even though you were the one wanting to treat her. This video was very humbling and if I ever visit, I’ll never forget these faces! ♥️
I can't believe that there are people in cages. It is shocking that in such a rich country people are living like this. My dog has more room than these poor people.
Better to live in this small space than to be homeless like you see in the West. Homelessness is the worst disaster in an individual not to talk of a family. How can you function when you don’t have a place to rest or sleep in peace?
@@Ponobell there's unemployment benefits in the US and more opportunities. There's probably homeless people in Hong Kong as well but the topic is their housing is crap. Even of you work hard you are going to live in this type of places. Compared to US where apartments are spacious.
They live like this because it's not a country, housing issues will be solved very quickly when Hong Kong is fully Chinese. Poor people in nearby Shenzhen live much better than poor people in Hong Kong.
Love Coco. Bless her. What a sweet woman. Hope your paths crosses again and get some noodles together. Thank you for bringing these issues to light. You are a great example of what traveling truly is. You are not afraid to show the reality of it all. Hong Kong is not only glits and glam, there is human hardship behind all of it but also human resilience and joy despite the circumstances.
Drew, what you did here in making this video was beautiful..the meaning behind it, yes I agree, these people of Hong Kong who struggle and live in such ways deserve so much better. 😢 we here in the states take so much for granted, SO MUCH! Lay our heads down tonight, give thanks, then give it again🙏

Greetings… As a hk local, wanted to say thank you for visiting HK this crazy packed-up place of the world. Indeed this is one of the hard-to-deal-with lifestyle everyday for some people living here and carry on the struggling with high density living standard . All we hope our government will do something to input more decent facilities and provides the assist to the lower class especially the very lower income levels let them live in stable with respects. Thanks for sharing this topic to the world. Cheers
I saw another documentary, the housing crisis in HK is because the government don't release more land for housing, and even when they do, the do it by bidding for the developers causing the developers to put a hefty price to make a profit. HK government should check what Singapore do on public housing.
I really appreciate Coco’s approach to life and her positive attitude. She doesn’t deserve this, but life played a joke on her. She held on to life’s changes and stayed optimistic. I truly respect her.

when i saw that i wondered how much of it was hospitality and how much of it was also an understandable level of pride/stubbornness/ a need to do something herself.

Would love to hear ur route out of poverty.
Great message. Never give up hope.
@@Gw17bvp28f
Actually, even when I was living in a cage home and struggling to survive, looking for a comfortable life was still not my primary goal in life.

Đẻ nhiều khổ lắm không có nhà đất để ở
Don’t be ashamed baby, it’s like this and worse all over the world.
@@darlingsunshine4824True, but perhaps that just means we should all be ashamed.
Coco is so sweet ❤She is very independent and stubborn, I love it! I’m praying for all these people🙏🏼
Also arrogant.

Unbelievable that Coco worked for a Bank and because she is old now live there. Her attitude is so positive. She is so sweet.

You're a gem for even having this thought. Kudos.

Omg yes indeed...she is amazingly inspiring and has a kind & generous heart. God bless her💗🙌🏽
Very touching video... That lady Coco touched my heart deeply
What a woman Coco is! Truly mad respect for her and others! Thanks for helping her and may god help them get better lives.
Drew, thank you so much for showing this side of my hometown to the world. I really appreciate how respectful you were. Every time I watch videos like this, I feel blessed to have lived a comfortable life here, but am always reminded of how I could become homeless in an instant if an accident happens. You do get a “pass” as a foreigner, but this small change will definitely be appreciated.

CO CO is a generous and smart lady. She represents what Hong Konger supposed to be.
The rich are so maddeningly indifferent to the poor in EVERY country!
The richer the rich are, the poorer the poor are. It's so obvious yet capitalists make it seem like the rich are the poor victims of socialism. Lol.
Absolutely agree. Smart person whoever you are 👍
