I think the most shocking part of filming this story is the fact that these coffin home dwellers are spending $200-400 USD per month for rent. It’s just a very sad situation for hundreds of thousands of local people in one of my favorite cities in the world 😌 The next time you go to Hong Kong and enjoy the 5-star amenities, don’t forget about these people!
Not to brag but my mortgage & insurance for 3B 1B in the US (Midwest) is around $600, locked in around 2017. It's shocking & sickening to me that some of these people pay almost 50-80% of the equivalant of my mortgage to RENT a coffin room. This is quickly becoming the reality for all large industrialized cities regardless of government. Hong Kong, Singapore, LA, NY. Tokyo. Many of these people could probably afford a better standard of living if they lived on mainland China somewhere but would there be jobs there for them?
The man sleeping without a mattress brought me to tears...When I moved to the flat I'm in right now, 4 years ago, I didn't have any money left after paying the down payment so I had to sleep on the floor for the first 2 weeks. I would use my winter jacket to soften the floor. I will never forget how miserable it felt and it was just for 2 weeks. This guys has been living like this for years. It's horrible. No one deserves to live in conditions like these.
@@jdelap06Sounds like wherever you're from they used their mattresses til they turned to dust God damn 😂😂 Not trying to be disrespectful im just imagining someone sleeping on a mattress that's turned to dirt, that would suck. Have anyone of you guys ever seen the old style hay beds? Where there's criss cross rope holding you up from tge floor with hay covering it? Sounds itchy. 😆
Drew, thank you for bringing us Coco! What a sweet woman she is. She was so generous, even though she did not have much to share. She didn't flinch and bought you drinks. Amazing.
Wow this really humbled me..I feel for these people that are living like this..i can’t imagine being an older person and sleeping on the floor w no mattress..thank you for being respectful to these people..they may be poor but are trying to survive
Also arrogant. The low class actually is more contempt toward others, especially mainland fellow Chinese. Their pride is based on looking down on others. Such hierarchy of humility/arrogance toward others is typical in tropical culture and social underclass, especially in southeast Asia. Northern cultures of cold climate tend to egalitarian and individualistic without such hierarchy, typical Mongols, northern europeans and other arctic people. Coco's English, like some the other residents, is very good! She could become a tour-guide (working as few/many hours as she wished) & charge international travellers for her local knowledge. I would pay to follow her round & listen to her all day! With just a little bit of upfront funding/marketing support, she could purchase an electric scooter to ease the physical strain of navigating & guiding paying customers. Travelling is always easier/more fun & culturally richer when you know someone local. Might even make her enough to rent somewhere bigger, although she has made a really nice job of her tiny-living space! My mother is 90 & still works part-time out of choice, it keeps her mentally & physically active, so anything is possible. Her tours could be called: Go-Coco!
Thank you so much for showing this part of Hong Kong. As a Hongkonger, I feel both saddened and ashamed. It's shocking to see those who speak English well, indicating they once studied and worked hard, now suffering in their old age. Our government, once among the richest, hasn't done enough to support those in need.
There are some reasons why they ended up there (not to say they deserve that)! One reason is divorcing and the other is gambling and the last one is bankruptcy due to poor business! Many poor in HK were once rich people with bad planning! But some of them will eventually be assigned to some public housing! 🙏🏾
Coco is such an amazing person, she has so little but yet she is so happy. I love her attitude, she didn’t want any handouts, all she wanted was some company. Amazing
Thank you for always being respectful. You’re my favorite travel TH-camr simply because of how educated and respectful you are. I love that you educate us on things most people don’t. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
@@drewbinskyYes, you are, this time!! Thanks, Drew. HKers deserve a better public housing, like the Singaporeans. The government has more than enough money to do it. To be fair, there are only around 100-200K people from about of 7M people in HK live in such condition. They can be easily absorbed in mainland China, if they want to move there. But, yeah, HKers are too proud sometimes. And, the government needs to "manage" the real-estate cartel there in HK!!
Don't get me wrong, but even if you're a millionaire, how can you make this better? It is heartbreaking to see people living like this but imagine someone having 50 000 000 dollars in liquid cash...what can they do? You can buy like 2 apartment complexes for that which can house like 100 people. There are hundreds of thousands of people living in such conditions just in Hong Kong...tens of millions in the world. Yes, a handful of people own half the world's wealth, but rich people in general themselves cannot make a difference. Not without government's help. Fyi, 50 000 000 dollars in net worth would put you among top 0.0001% earners and all you can do with those money is to house only 100-150 people at most. If you wanna know how much it costs to take care of someone poor look at the US. 150 BILLION dollars a YEAR to take care of 10 million migrants. No matter how heartbreaking it is, you will never be able to take care of everyone and so you better use the money you have to help your own people. That's why I want migrants out. That's why I want 150 billion to be used to house tens of thousands of Americans that need help. It may sound harsh but if you think about it rationally, it is the most logical thing you can do. And the Hong Kong government should do the same thing.
Coco seems so sweet. I've noticed the people that seem to have the least are the happiest. It's heartbreaking to imagine so many have to live like that. Very humbling video.
Poor means you’re down to basics, no worries about what to wear, bills of all sorts, managing all your “stuff.” You aren’t a slave to its maintenance, upkeep, and security. So long as you have food and some sort of shelter from the weather, it leaves freedom to expend on others, to get to know them.

Not to downplay their situation but, for homeless here in the U.S., there are no cage homes. No community toilet and shower. No t.v. no clothes. Homeless here live in the woods in tents. In doorways. In 24hr restaurants hoping they don't get kicked out.
This is so heartbreaking. Your videos really make me so appreciative of what my family and I all have. I am so grateful. My heart just breaks for these people living in these conditions. I don't know what is worse? Being homeless or living there just like Drew said.Thank you for sharing and making me realize that when I think I have it bad, someone else has it worse. So truly sad.

True. But you can tell she was uncomfortable with the shopping spree. At that point I just would’ve gave her the money and shit the cameras off. She can go buy it herself with no pressure
I feel so emotional after watching this... It's really sad how the living conditions for the poor folks can be.. And I'm still complaining in Singapore for not living in a condo, but just a HDB flat.. Now it looks like my house can be subdivided for 20 people to stay...😢🙏 Makes me feel very humbled and blessed. Hoping the best for Coco and the other friendly uncle there...
What a heartbreaking AND beautiful video. The resilience of these people, the joy some of them have, in stark contrast against those who are just "waiting to die" have me absolutely wrecked. Thank you so much for showing this and humanizing those below the poverty line. Hope you get to see Coco, the super happy guy, and others again.
I live in Hong Kong and I will never not be amazed and humbled by the resilience of the people that have to endure this hardship, coco is a true icon and deserves so much more, as do all people living in these conditions. I pray that the housing system will improve so these types of home become obsolete. in my village they have just built many transitional housing units so it is a step forward, but needs to be more and faster!
I can't believe that there are people in cages. It is shocking that in such a rich country people are living like this. My dog has more room than these poor people.
Better to live in this small space than to be homeless like you see in the West. Homelessness is the worst disaster in an individual not to talk of a family. How can you function when you don’t have a place to rest or sleep in peace?
@@Ponobell there's unemployment benefits in the US and more opportunities. There's probably homeless people in Hong Kong as well but the topic is their housing is crap. Even of you work hard you are going to live in this type of places. Compared to US where apartments are spacious.

Greetings… As a hk local, wanted to say thank you for visiting HK this crazy packed-up place of the world. All we hope our government will do something to input more decent facilities and provides the assist to the lower class especially the very lower income levels let them live in stable with respects. Thanks for sharing this topic to the world. Cheers
I saw another documentary, the housing crisis in HK is because the government don't release more land for housing, and even when they do, the do it by bidding for the developers causing the developers to put a hefty price to make a profit. HK government should check what Singapore do on public housing.

I loved coco, I’m so glad you took extra good care of her.
Not to downplay their situation but, for homeless here in the U.S., there are no cage homes. No community toilet and shower. No t.v. no clothes.
Homeless here live in the woods in tents. In doorways. In 24hr restaurants hoping they don't get kicked out.
Thats the government give all money for war and strangers from all countries. But not any longer...
Thanks for this great content Drew it’s an eye opener how to be grateful too. I’m missing HK so many memories God bless you and your crew
Home.
Less. Because when you're homeless every day you have to think about where you're going to sleep And where you're going to pee/ poo
Extra decisions.
Coco seems so sweet and so genuine. Hard life
😢
Better to live in this small space than to be homeless like you see in the West. Homelessness is the worst disaster in an individual not to talk of a family. How can you function when you don’t have a place to rest or sleep in peace?
@@Ponobell there's unemployment benefits in the US and more opportunities. There's probably homeless people in Hong Kong as well but the topic is their housing is crap. Even of you work hard you are going to live in this type of places. Compared to US where apartments are spacious.
America will be similar in more places, just a matter of time.
I feel that Drew wants to cry but couldn't show tears
May God help these struggling people
Coco such a sweet soul..even in her difficult situation she still want to invite drew even only his water.. God bless you
Love Coco. She is so sweet and kind. Glad you took care of her❤
Beautiful documentary. Thank you for sharing your experience (and theirs) with us. ❤
Coco is such a wonderful, generous, beautiful human being ❤ I wish nothing but the best for her and hope her life gets better ❤
Coco is so sweet! She shows great generosity, even though you were the one wanting to treat her. This video was very humbling and if I ever visit, I’ll never forget these faces! ♥️
Wow, I‘m in tears😭. What a wonderful and compassionate way of documenting people’s lives. I’m incredibly grateful, Drew!!
😂
Coco is such a light! God bless them all 🙏🏽 the first old man saying he’s waiting to die broke me 💔
I have to say I am taken back and humbled by this video and I appreciate those people and their lives, and you for making it and enlightening us on something I’ve never seen before. They are valid. Great video 👍🏼
Thanks for highlighting this matter. Broke my heart. Cocoa was a true inspiration and was a genuine soul.
Thank you Drew for showing what most people never see, and probably either ignore or just pass off because they do not want to believe situations like this are a reality. I was stationed in some very unhospitable places on earth, but nothing like this. YOU ARE DOING GOOD WORK BRINGING THIS TO LIGHT, please keep it up & be careful sir.
Drew would like to congratulate you on the work you do, showing the reality of people from different parts of the world.
I hope you`re gonna keep making this kind of videos. It was very interesting!
I’m a hongkonger. I’m deeply touched by you making this video. Thank you for shining lights to these ppl and being so kind and friendly.
Another banger of a video! Love these "nitty gritty" look into how others live, the more I watch the more grateful I am.
Very grateful 🙏🏼
Wow! Humble pie episode to which I gratefully appreciate. I’m a middle class 61 year old woman who cannot help but to admire and wish that I lived in a bigger home or drove a nicer car. This video reminded me to appreciate all that I do have which is relatively more than most…. TY for this ❤
Drew you are one of kind youtuber..Not the typical one who always feature the good side of a country. This is reality
True ❗️😎
That lady has such a beautiful soul i would give her my spare bedroom and look after her. What a amazing lady and so happy we all need to have some one like her in their life's.. She has made my world a happier place today. xx
This was an amazing episode. I strongly suggest you getting your own special on etv ! They would definitely fund and help you with exposer to help educate others on traveling. Ill make sure to message you to encourage you to push for your content to go mainstream and make a difference! Im so grateful I ended my night with this video. Extremely humbling and understanding. Hong Kong has to do better by their citizens!
Love Coco. Bless her. What a sweet woman. Hope your paths crosses again and get some noodles together. Thank you for bringing these issues to light. You are a great example of what traveling truly is. You are not afraid to show the reality of it all. Hong Kong is not only glits and glam, there is human hardship behind all of it but also human resilience and joy despite the circumstances.
Drew, I just found your channel a few weeks ago and me and my girlfriend have watched almost all your videos! I love how you give your guests such a spotlight and we get to see such interesting people in many different walks of life. Thank you for what you do!
It is sad that people are living like this. The blessing is the beautiful people you did meet. The places were so small like a prison. Coco and the other gentleman were so sweet uplifting Coco looks great for her age she can run circles around most young folks here in America. May God bless all of them & once again thank you for showing us the world it is humbling.
as a hong konger i really appreciate that you film these kinds of video, dive down to hong kong's irl situation to increase the awareness to the world or just hong kong. To me, i could also know more about my home more in a different perspective !!! Really enjoyed and appreciate the video.
Coco’s cane/chair is awesome; just like her personality.
You got to speak with so many kind people in this video, but Miss Coco has stolen our hearts! She was so sweet and so cute. And my heart smiles knowing Drew Binksy is a man of his word and WILL visit Coco the next time he visits Hong Kong 🥰
Greetings… As a hk local, wanted to say thank you for visiting HK this crazy packed-up place of the world. Indeed this is one of the hard-to-deal-with lifestyle everyday for some people living here and carry on the struggling with high density living standard . All we hope our government will do something to input more decent facilities and provides the assist to the lower class especially the very lower income levels let them live in stable with respects.
Thanks for sharing this topic to the world.
Cheers
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I saw another documentary, the housing crisis in HK is because the government don't release more land for housing, and even when they do, the do it by bidding for the developers causing the developers to put a hefty price to make a profit. HK government should check what Singapore do on public housing.
Deeply touching video! Sad but true...what a crazy world where money seems to be more important than the dignity of a human being! We have to free ourselfes from this madness! Thank you for sharing and especially for caring! You are a warm hearted guy, Blessings to you and to all of these poor people living under such terrible conditions! Coco I will never forget you! Blessings to you dear soul!💜
Auntie Coco is the truth she stole the show she is a Gem ❤❤
Thank you for this video
Drew, you're so sweet giving them red envelopes!! That definitely made their day. ❤
Was there money in them? Coco was so happy to get hers ☺️
@jessalove3344 Yes, red envelope 🧧 means money! 🥰🥰
@millv7948 thank you for explaining ☺️
@@millv7948how much?
It's so heartbreaking 💔 😢 seeing how they live. I am 30 and living with my dad, served 8 years in the military and got nothing to show from it..... I live off of small pension and luckily my dad works but times are tough all around the world. And we should all just be grateful for what we have. A roof over your head and food in your stomach is great! It's tough but that's unfortunately life and everyone is different. STAY SAFE OUT THERE PEOPLE! "Love over fear" ❤
How can people be allowed to rent these "rooms "? This is so sad
Youre amazing i love your mindset, i hope you stay strong and God blesses you with even more ❤
Yo broskie this might sound weird but stongly suggest you stop by my twitch channel somtime. the community is fully of people in their 30's 40's and up with a mindset to change and we party and have un every night. ur not alone my friend
These are suppoused to be restrooms to lay for the nightsleep.
This was very eye opening and I love how respectful you are!
Coco is amazing. What an enlightening video. Excellent work. 👍🏼🏆
Coco is a legend ❤ This sweet lady was more than happy to share the little she had. I wish her nothing but the best!
This is nuts !! Ive seen documentaries on these types of homes. Such an eye opener how people live their lives. Makes you realize that the small things in life that people complain about are irrelevant . The heat would absolutely kill me. Coco seems so nice and kind. I love her seat !! 😊😊

Thank you once again for showing reality for 90% of people worldwide.
Thanks for shedding light Drew! Really really really appreciate your friendliness and heart for these less fortunate people.
Great video! I really enjoyed the interaction with the locals, especially the lovely lady.
Truly heartbreaking to see. Makes me so thankful for what I have. And thank you for being so respectful and friendly to everyone.
Really impressing stories! Thanks for sharing parts of the world that usually you don't see in media. I'm really respect you Drew. You teach all your subscribers a lot about the world we are living in!
I appreciate that!
Wow I never imagined the living conditions could be so bad in Hong Kong. Really shocking and sad but well presented Drew.
Coco is an angel, you've just entertained an angel. God bless you.
This kind of videos is the reason i have subscribed to your channel 6 7 years before. Happy seeing you not only growing but also evolving.
i dont think telling people going through financial issues that you won 300$ betting on horse racing is a good idea Drew
It was 300 Hong Kong dollars which is less than 40 USD
@@maksymilianczaplejewicz190300 hkd is a lot for the poor ppl. Use your brain

@@Hardrada904 their monthly rent was 2000 so 300 isn't even that much really
Those small rooms cost a lot. Its expensive and not comfortable to live in. I feel bad that people in Hong Kong with minimum wage earner, elderly, retired workers have to endure this kind of living everyday.
This was such a great video drew.
They’re living in such bad places, but omg, their health is astonishing. She was such a sweetheart.
Hong Kong is in my thoughts and prayers 🙏🏻thanks again brother
When you show these it so helpful to see how people live it’s open people up to other people’s lives and situations. Liberating people’s thoughts to understanding there’s more to life than just our own.
Hong Kong literally buries old generation alive in these coffins living unfortunately. They need better affordable housing and healthcare.
Very sad 😔
Thank you, Drew. What an eye-opening account of Hong Kong's housing crisis. I didn't realize it was like this over there. God bless those folks!
Thanks for sharing Drew❤
We all know a Coco. That Aunty that just wants to make sure everyone is taken care of🥺 love from Botswana❤️
Thank you for shining the light on this. ❤🙏🏼 so heartbreaking.
coco such a sweet grandma, i cant have a positive attitude like her
Coco is very generous and pretty cheerful talking about and showing her daily life, but she conceals all the misery so as that old man living near her. I hope both and everyone one of the residents can live happily and positively.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for being respectful and sharing Coco life to us
As someone who lives in Hong Kong, the situation is just flat out sad.
Thankyou for bringing me this, so important for the rest of us to see. Especially for me living in scandinavia.
Coco is so lovely. Praying for all these people. I hope things get better for them ♥️
The smell??? The noise?
That would probably drive me mad
The smoke was by far the worst
The 70 year old lady is just awesome.
Lovely to be around with, perhaps to share your home with her.
It’s so emotional seeing this l hope and pray the people get what they deserve and live in better conditions than what we have seen in the video.😢
Thank you so much for the video; I love Hong Kong too. That’s why many Hongkongers are so frustrated with the government.
Great video Drew. You show us things we would never know about otherwise. We get to see a glimpse, living vicariouly thru your lens. Its humbling yet enriches us with knowledge. Thank you, truly.
