If the internet was of more content like this, the world and us would be much better off. There is so much reason and common sense in your narrative which i totally relate to.
As for that mirror - Levi alredy said righfully that you don't need new fancy stuff to live an active and healthy life. And these workout subscription is another stark example of this trend of depriving people of ownership of the thing they buy. More and more we don't own what we buy. Thia goes with HP's ink cartridges , BMW's heated seats and in the near furure (probably past 2030) we will subscibe to cars as such. All of this in the name of the idea that you won't own anything and you will be happy. Where at the same time everything will be owed by a handful of people dictating our lives.
P.s. Please, do the Peloton essay :)

Dude, same! Took me years to learn that healthy + happy doesn’t come from “meeting the requirements”. That marketing can be quite convincing. Thanks for tuning in! ♥️ Sher

Sadly too convincing as I still feel inadequate to this day - Even though my doctor says I am at a healthy weight and my blood work is great I get this lingering feeling its still not good enough.

I love using the peloton app - I can do strength, pilates, yoga, tread or bike workouts for like $13 a month. Didnt need to buy anything expensive. My bike was $300 instead of $1000+

I'm by no means a Lululemon apologist, but I do think the stance taken in this video is a bit unfair. With regard to the Mirror - this is the type of product that has a very targeted, niche demographic. This product is not meant for everyone, and that's okay. Its upfront cost alone is a huge barrier to entry for a lot of people, let alone the cost of the monthly subscription. Likely anyone who buys this thing is an exercise enthusiast (or maybe they just like buying novel, expensive things). As you mentioned, having a mirror to see your form is a huge plus. That's one thing I really missed when I had to do my workouts in my living room during the pandemic! Also a mirror provides other feedback. For example, when I'm working out at the gym with the big mirrored wall in front of me, even the expression on my face indicates how my body is reacting - a grimace shows that I'm working hard or perhaps too hard. A neutral face or smile gives me encouragement to keep going.
For someone like me who loves group classes, the live class feature of the Mirror is a big big deal. A strict schedule helps to keep us disciplined in our workouts and encourages the habit of exercising regularly. I don't think this element should be discounted. Additionally, people have different goals when it comes to exercising - weight loss, improved heart health, endurance, etc. Not everyone knows intuitively how to accomplish these goals. A guided class helps in that effort.
In regard to workout clothing - any workout video you watch with professional/certified instructors will be wearing technical and relatively expensive gear, be it on the Mirror app, Les Mills (my personal fave), on TH-cam, wherever. If you try doing a cardio class at home wearing a pair of sweatshorts, your clothing is going to be soaked in sweat in a matter of minutes and you'll be very physically uncomfortable. I buy my workout pants from Lululemon. My Lulus are the most expensive articles of clothing I own, with pants/crops costing $100 to $150. It's expensive, but it's completely worth it. As someone who does a lot of high-intensity exercises and sweats like a beast, Lulus disperse moisture very well. Also, exercising is not without pain. Their compression pants making jumping and running much less uncomfortable. Technical clothing is not just about looking good - it's about performing well and holding up. I have Lulu pants I bought in 2013 and they still look good.
There are so many exercise options for people ranging from free, cheap to expensive like this Mirror. If this is not an option for you, that's totally fine. I can afford the Mirror, but I could never justify spending this type of money on a product like it. I choose the gym, running and cycling. As mentioned before, this product is for a very targeted audience. No one should feel bad if they don't fall into it.

Thanks for watching and bringing up so many great points! I especially resonate with being able to communicate with yourself via grimace or smile in the mirror - it can be an excellent “mirror” for us to see how we’re feeling! If we choose to be kind to ourselves with it. A friend of mine also just used the mirror to workout in an airport, which I thought was a neat/useful place to have the product. We appreciate your engagement with the topic 🙌🏽 See you in the next one ♥️ Sher

I didn't even know there was a toxic Lululemon culture. And I think their active wear makes me look terrible, but I don't care. I have pieces I've worn since I bought them 12 years ago and they work really well for crossfit. I only stopped wearing them since I gained weight while taking care of my mom so they don't fit at all LOL. But I'll check out Girlfriend Collective. Thanx for the suggestion.

I've owned a treadmill for about 5 years now. It took me a long time to decide on a piece of equipment that I would actually use. Since I love to walk and hike and am not fond of the gym, it has been a perfect choice for me. I use it at least 3 times a week. With it I purchased the iFit subscription. I can use it on my treadmill, tv, phone, etc. iFit also includes running, strength training, yoga, etc. I have never felt like they are trying to sell me anything or demean me. And as an added bonus ... I can wear my old sweat shorts and tshirt. Not trying to sell anyone on iFit but without the videos of trainers running, walking or hiking, a treadmill would be extremely boring... It's definitely one of the reasons I decided on the treadmill is because it included an option for trainer videos. The actual cost of the subscription is cheaper than the gym and a lot less hassle.

*And yep it's another one of those tech advances where you can do it on your own if you choose so. Someone could do all those workouts in front of their own regular home mirrors with some basic equipment and just cut out the middle man. But as always, I'll never begrudge anyone for using these things coz it can very well be a good motivator for some, kinda like the same concept with having a personal trainer, you could do your workouts without one but sometimes people want that accountability and planning passed onto someone else to push us.

They launched something similar here in Norway, under one of the Nordic countries largest gym chains, SATS. It flopped gigantically because the mirror itself cost 1200 dollars or more + 60 dollars per month for a subscription. and that was SEPARATE from the gym subscription, if you still wanted to workout at the gym physically. also, this concept flopped because people don't like to workout by themselves. we are designed to move in groups, communities, that's how we thrive, even if you don't directly interact with anyone at the gym, the feeling of everyone there being there to do the same thing, make us feel better and more dedicated - not all by ourselves, in front of a fancy mirror at home, isolated. it baffles me how people who launch these useless products just keep ignoring our basic mental health needs as humans and then wonder why they don't work.

Like the mirror is cool but not needed. Not everything needs to be a subscription. I like the idea of having the thing you watch your workout video also be reflective so one can make sure your form is right, but the fact id I must pay more money to use it after dropping a lot of money, if I want the mirror to have more use. Like this could have been so cool if it was just a mirror but touch screen and ran android or something and people can put all kinds of stuff on it. So people can sign up for a workout subscription somewhere if they want or just use youtube vids or even use it for things that are not workout (like this would be great for something like a make up tutorial). But Lulu lemon wants more money and subscription services look good for investors as it is a stable income every month so they want to have one, as they can make a lot of money. So they will force you to use it and commit only to them and if this mirror fails and they stop supporting mirror one day all of these mirrors will instantly become useful. Instead it may just be better to buy a MIRROR. Like an actual normal full-length mirror to work out in front of and maybe a tiny table to put one's computer and pull up a work out vid near it. It will not be as good but it will suffice and is better for the wallet. As there is already so much great stuff online, why pay for more?
