Husband was stationed in order from 1990 to 2010 Nellis NV, Kunsan South Korea, RAF Mildenhall, United Kingdom, Elemendorf, Alaska, and the last one before retirement was Dover Air Force Base. He liked Kunsan, South Korea the most stationed there for 2 years. Overall what base you are at is the best. You will be stationed there for a short time. Good luck with you new chapter in life and enjoy what lays ahead for you and your husband.

Remember - The Needs of the Air Force come 1st. When I PCS'd from Germany I requested all bases in California (at that time there were 8), plus the state of California, I got McGuire AFB, NJ.

Funny you say that because I requested McGuire, along with Charleston AFB, And Dover AFB. They ended up assigning me to Travis AFB in CA. I was really trying to avoid going from east coast all the way to west coast but I can’t even find anyone to switch with. Would’ve loved to go to Charleston. Heard so much about it

My husband was an Air Force brat born at Nellis AFB, both his parents served. Now he currently serves himself we been stuck station in the midwest. He's been in 7 years so far, we been station in Kansas & New Mexico. We're from California, tried multiple times to get stationed at a West Coast state (CA, WA, NV, AZ). His job can go anywhere. Overall the needs of the Air Force come first. Their Dream Sheet is a hit or miss. Just remember every duty station is only temporary.
    Good luck to everyone!

When it came to stateside bases, I had no choice, I had to go where the aircraft I worked on/flew on was stationed. First duty assignment was McClellan AFB in Sacramento CA (now closed), former home of the EC-121 AEWC aircraft. Later on, I was assigned to Tinker AFB (Oklahoma City), home of the E-3 AWACS. Overall Oklahoma wasn't terrible, it had all that we needed. As for your top five bases, I've been TDY to two of them, Nellis and MacDill, and I have visited McChord and Wright-Patterson.

I was stationed at Peterson field Colorado Springs before it was made an Air Force base in the early 60s. Great climate and also Air Force Academy nearby. I had my own auto and traveled the State, Denver was an hour away, mountain skiing nearby, loose military pressure for a lowly E-3 like me. I would have re uped if I made E-5 but all promotions were frozen by President IKE at the time. The only drawback was no ocean nearby.

I came here to see if either bolling or Andrews would be on the list, and I love Andrews. And yes, the traffic is bad going on I-495 and I-295, sometimes 301.
Anywho, fun fact: my grandmother used to work at Malcolm grow and retired there. My grandfather is a retired corpsman and he used to watch me and my sisters while my grandmother was at work. At that time, while I live with my parents and sister, we lived about 5 mins from Andrews. When it was time for her to get off, my grandfather used to take us to her job, we sat outside waiting for her to go to the commissary or the bx.
I wish I could go back in time because I miss my childhood years. I do plan on joining the service because I think it's a great branch. prayerfully, I can get in. :)
another fun fact: they renovated the bx and it's so beautiful and diff then it was 10 years ago. They have more restaurants at the food ct and it's bigger.

My husband was actually stationed at Andrews and would absolutely disagree as being on the "best" list haha. For my side of things- the medical was garbage. If you're pregnant/expecting, you won't deliver at the base as the hospital only provides OB appointments. I had to deliver at Ft. Belvoir which was nice but was an hour an a half away from where we lived. I know the ECC has since cut back hours since we've left the area. Not a lot of great options to live immediately around base, luckily I'm from MD and could navigate us to the AA County side by the water

"Best" is totally subjective. I served for 21 years and enjoyed my time stationed at "bad" bases more than some of the times I was at "good" bases. The duty matters - not just the geographic location. If your job situation is bad, you're not going to enjoy yourself regardless of location. My advice to young people just enlisting: don't try to get stationed at the base nearest to your home. Cut the cord and take advantage of the opportunity to see new and different areas of the country.

Individuals vary so drastically there is no "best" or worst for all concerned. Young Airmen want social lives so coastal and near-urban basing tends to win. Outdoors types have opposite interests.
Those homesteading prior to retirement tend to buy property accordingly. The smart play is RESEARCH including personal visits if practical.
For example I enjoyed Pope because I lived in Gray's Creek away from it all so Fayettenam was not a concern. Ditto Shaw because I don't live in Sumter and my social life as an Airman was with other bikers while SC vehicle laws like no silly POV inspections make it great for gearheads. Race tracks and swap meets are in easy range.

    • @oHeihei
      @oHeihei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I would say stateside is more common. If you get overseas, it's easy to stay overseas. And if you go from overseas to stateside, it's very hard to get back to overseas. For your first assignment, it's all based on luck, and your job for sure. For me, a lot of people were heading to Germany, so that's where I went. Then after I got my assignment the next round of jobs, a lot of people got Korea, or Japan. After that, it was a lot of Stateside like Luke, and Travis I heard a lot. So it could be easy based on when you graduate tech school as well, and which base needs personnel, but that's just way out of your control.
At the end of the day, no matter where you go, it'll be what you make of it. Stay with positive adventurous people, and no matter where you go you'll have a blast and have a lot to do.

Totally disagree about Andrews, especially for a first time enlistee. The Wash DC area will give you a false sense of what the AF is and how it is run. I was assigned to the Pentagon as an A1C at the C level, which if not for being an AF Brat and with an entire family that was AF; I would have gotten the wrong idea. Ex. Lt Colonels get the office coffee in many Wash DC Pentagon offices. I've had to tell a brigadier general that he's "only a one star general," which many of you veterans know, a one star is a god at a base. This also goes for Bolling and the other bases in the area as you're exposed to many top senior staff members of all branches.
Additionally, the COLA for a junior enlisted and some officers, is too low and you'll need to travel from far outside a normal commute if you have an existing family. For those in the dorms, it will be a very different experience than at a traditional base. I was at Fort Myers before getting married with the army on the first/second floors were four to a room, while the AF on third/fourth was one to two depending on ranks. From my friends at Bolling "high rise", they said the rooms aren't anything like the dorms at a base or shown in these videos.
Finally, I hope you're taking this experience seriously. When I got to my first real base, Eielson AFB AK (WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE, I still talk to folks that I've shared deployments with), in a fighter squadron (18TH!!!!), things were extremely different than at HQ. Wash DC didn't prepare me for the Ops tempo, the readiness and the training to prepare to deploy for real world situations (which we did); lucky, my father had trained my sister and I for this environment and the transition was easier, still suffered from survivor's guilt after getting out and crowds were an issue for many years.
I feel for anyone that thinks Wash DC is the "Real Air Force;" that would be an opportunist mind set.
Per the description, my favoriate bases were:
Osan AB, Korea; Eielson/Elmendorf AFB, Alaska (but you better like cold and outdoors but avoid Clear AS); Dyes, AFB Texas; any of the San Antonio bases; Hill AFB, Utah

As a first term Bolling airman, yes it's expensive but... What is available, is outstanding I firmly stand by that is a great area with a strong USO support base/single member programs/mwr facilitys. If you didn't make the most of that you squandered that assignment.
