  • For a community of compassionate and caring Christians, the PBCC businesses tend to get the opposite reviews from former non-community members. Matthew's story isn't anything new to us, but still is heart wrenching to listen to. The comments on social media, messages, and emails sent to us by former and current employees all have the same theme - it's a toxic, misogynistic, and racist environment to work in. In Matthew's case, having an 18 year old daughter of his own was the catalyst that made him leave. He couldn't imagine his daughter being treated the way these PBCC members treated others.
What started out as an incredible job, Matthew quickly realized that all they wanted him for was his expertise and not to maintain dignity or a safe workplace emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. The workplace became very toxic, with PBCC members being caught taking pictures up girl's skirts, alcohol everywhere, and misogyny he couldn't bear to witness. Accountability was not given to the girl who was violated, but rather, she was let go, and the perpetrator got to keep his job. He was told another girl was only hired for her looks. He quickly realized they did not value women at all.
Matthew spoke his mind and asked questions! He takes us on his 2 year journey of homophobia and racism, alcohol in the workplace, getting ready for Dean Hales and how he actually ate with them. In his words- he never saw any signs of the values they speak of and reiterates he would NEVER work for another PBCC company ever again. He sends a potent message after recording this episode on how much they disliked ex-members. It's nothing new to us but Bruce definitely isn't showing his flock how to have care and compassion to others that have left like they say they are.

It would be great if there were a directory of brethren businesses so we could look it up before attending an interview. Im from Australia, and I've worked at a brethren business and never ever want to again. I find myself looking up company websites and searching employee names and photos trying to work out if they are brethren. I would rather know at the onset instead of wasting my time and their time attending interviews and finding out then.

One of the things about non members working for the brethren is, if you've been there for quite a few years (mine was 7 years) is that you get left behind in the qualifications world. As your guest said, they don't do training or only as little as possible, so when it comes to getting work after it makes it very difficult.

When I worked in OSG, even though they "supposedly" do not celebrate Christmas, the kids were UP IN ARMS when they saw a photo of a black Santa!!! It was the talk of the school for weeks because they were so angry about it, it could not be true! So much racism... On another note, they had a Jewish teacher for one of their classes and they referred to him, for the whole year, not by his name but as "The Jew." :(

Sometimes it is like they are stuck in a time warp back before slavery was abolished, back before women had the vote, back before the women’s movement, back when being gay was against the law. They say they are Christian but Christian follow the example of Jesus, who hung out with the undesirables of his time.
I even find that terminology they use about people on a workplace situation totally obnoxious but believable. It’s like the non community members have more of a conscience than they do.
To me the big thing that came across is their lack of respect for those that they consider beneath them.
I remember my Mum teaching me a song that was in one of the hymn books that went
Jesus loves the little children, all the children, all the children of the world, red and yellow, black and white, all are precious in his sight….
Anyone else learn that as a child?

i suspect that perhaps some ex ebs wish that other ex ebs never existed too. For similar reasons. Just saying

Are the exclusive brethren allowed to have a plural marriage, having more than one wife? This help boost future membership, since people are leaving the brethren today.

Oh no!! They would never support that kind of lifestyle. It would be considered evil. There are55,000 members worldwide. They exist even in the Caribbean not just Australia.
