  • Cathy Newman: 'It's not a Corbynista cull, it's quality control. That was the way Sir Keir Starmer tried to explain away the row over the growing list of left-wing candidates being stopped from standing for Labour.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
    -------
He said today he's entitled to select the highest quality potential MPs. But he and his deputy Angela Rayner seem to be split over whether Diane Abbott should be one of them, as Gary Gibbon reports.'

@@tr3vk4m there is a lot of policies that will need to be reversed from the current government. Considering they have a limited time to make the most impactful changes before they must have another election, I suspect they are incentivised to focus on reversals which have immediate and visible improvement on people’s lives. They need to be strategic about this.
If you want to assure protest laws are reversed, you’re best bet is to incentivise it for them by making this as visible a policy as you can and demonstrate how much backing it has, and therefore why it is worth spending their very previous time on this rather than on other policies.
As for intention we will need to await the published manifesto, but we should be careful not to misattribute a lack of mention as evidence for desiring the opposite.
I.e. I suspect there will be no mention of rejoining the EU in the manifesto as it is unrealistic that such a policy can be pursued during a single parliamentary term even though there is a majority of support in the party. The manifesto must be careful to not contain things that can then be used as ammunition against them next election. “You promised this and it didn’t happen” type things where the media will ignore accomplishments and focus on what they didn’t to in an effort to get the conservatives back in power.

Starmer has uncomfortably shifted our political spectrum to centre-right and beyond. This means a centre-right Conservative party cannot win against him, they will start to take on more extreme right wing positions. I am distinctly worried we are a step before an American 'lock-in' of two parties, one promising not to let the far right win but increasing inequality, and the other doing cartoonish 'brown people and the other party are the devil' strategy.

      @RobertJonesWightpaint 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

All we have to do in response to that is wait and see. The real issues will come to the fore after the close of poll - either Starmer's approach won't have worked, in which case all bets are off concerning the Labour Party's future direction, or it will, in which case he's going to have to prove a lot of people wrong who think he's a born-again Tory. By the way, I don't think he is - but I do think he's an authoritarian who has surrounded himself with an even more authoritarian bureaucracy, and one or two young special advisers who just should not have any role in running any political party, certainly not one committed to democratic change. The first one to get the boot should be the idiot who leaked to the press that Diane Abbott would not be allowed to stand - leave policy to the politicians, not the keen little wonks who are hoping to re-shape the Labour Party so that in due course they can emerge and be slotted into a safe seat.
If I have a message for Starmer himself, it's this: if you are successful in creating an NEC which is unequivocally on your side, good: very few Labour leaders have achieved that. But do ensure that once you have them in place, they know what they're doing, what they're there for, and that a tradition of democracy and accountability in the Labour movment is not something you can just throw away when you find it inconvenient. Get your team in place - but manage it in consistency with the principles - or "values" if you prefer than weasel-word alternative - of the party you lead.

Labour increasing taxes as night follows day is so accurate from Rishi. In our two party system labour follows Tories follows Labour follows Tories and when Labour comes in they have to raise taxes eventually because Tories drain the public purse and hand our funds to their rich mates, leaving public services and infrastructure in ruins. Labour needs to get our money back from the ultra rich, including corporations, through higher taxes on them that don't punish us. Tories need to recognise that neoliberalism only leads to collapse and benefits only a few psychopaths if they want to stay in power.

Tax is important as it redistributes hoarded wealth and redistributes it to parts of the economy it can be more productive. Labour should be looking at a wealth tax, look where the £700bn printed during Covid went, up. 27% are Left of Centre mild remainers.
21% are rejoinUK far left #Remoaners (Mostly Lib Dem & SNP & SWP & Rich One Nation fanatics like infected blood scandal multi-millionaire Sir Ken Clarke, etc) as per detailed research by Prof Matt Goodwin.

This greedy lot are like 1974 NUM, & they will bring UK down by indirectly harming worker patient's.
Brave reporters say Starmer = Stalin 2.0 & was 😢Upsetting to see Faisa Shaheen crying on bbc2 newsnight w nice vic derbyshire.
FS had a c-section 6 weeks a go & was campaigning w baby in arms but the Stalinist purge is getting bloodier as Starmer is, Drunk with Power, at prospect of winning 400+ seats & desperately wants to be PM for 20 yrs & build a new USSR by copying Bad Vlad Puttin.
Sir Liar Starmer won't tolerate any criticism. Its a purge of truth tellers not a purge of the left.
Labour will be renamed the Starmer Party. Labour is dead.
A new cult has been born, similar to Stalin & many statues will be built of Sir Liar.
School kids & sports teams will be forced to take a knee to Sir Liar.
Sir Liar lied about his own partygate beergate scandal in Durham when photos & witnesses saw him drunk & laughinh & dancing but he got off cuz the PCC & Chief Cop are his mates.
Sir Liar lied about green plan when he dumped £28B per yr spend to reduce climate action & stop planet burning up & killing millions.
Sir Liar is a short old brutish & lying bully like Stalin & Bad Vlad.
Now he was caught lying about knifing Diane Abbott in a Stalinist purge. He has a problem with strong black & brown women.

5 years later @channel4news notices! We could have done with a bit of journalistic integrity a bit earlier in the game; you know before our politics became a homogeneous, lobbyist funded 1 party state. A state of affairs that is very bad for our democracy and everyone should be worried about; irrelevant of what your position on the political spectrum is.
