Catalina 22 Swing Keel Removal

- This video shows how we removed the swing keel from Seanachai, our 1986 Catalina 22. To receive the keel, we built a rolling cradle based on a Rocco Dryfka design as described in Good Old Boat magazine (Mar/Apr 2017).

Great video. Saw it featured by Good Old Boat's facebook page. I've never worked on a boat with a swing keel. I'm surprised by how simple and elegant the mounting system is. I'm assuming the other end of the cable exits somewhere in the boat above the waterline.
It is nice that Catalina sells the pivot/support bracket still. If the pivot hole in the keel is wore what is the fix for that? Weld and re-drill the hole?

Nice work, well thought out lowering strategy. Visuals are good, but voice over description would have been huge improvement. Jack Dorsey, love the swing, but does nothing to make this video better. Where did you get those long jack-stands?.. like 'em!

Hello Burt Powell, Yes, pretty much. Replace the keel hanger pin and bolts. Used a torque wrench. We replace the keel eyebolt, and installed everything in the keel lifting hardware kit. Later, we replaced the keel winch...while we were at the dock.
That's what I forgot to envision, the screw jack.
We have our 1973 21ft Westerly Jouster in the yard right now. The keel is stuck halfway. We managed to shift it a few inches up and down using a combination of floor Jack, chocks and ratchet straps. But the keel housing is rammed full of growth and possibly a bit of corrosion. Any advice on how to clean it up? We’ve tried hacksaw blades etc. But nothing can really get up there and clean it out. I might pour in some chemicals to try dissolve some of the debris. Advice most welcome.

Many C-22 sailors discuss the “clunk” sound caused by excess space between the keel and the hanger casting. The space allows the keel to slide from side to side on the pivot pin-the lateral motion can cause wear. Catalina direct recommends no more than 7.62mm space between keel and hanger. They also sell a spacer kit that will eliminate the space at the top of the keel trunk and allow the top of the trunk to support the load from the keel. Shims are epoxied to the sides
of the keel near the top.

My keel was lost into 200 feet of water 💦 can I use my sail boat as just a motor boat till I find a keel ??
Hi Bryan, This question came up recently in a FB post on "Catalina 22 Sailboat Owners Group". The consensus appears to be no. It has to do with the stability of the boat when you remove that much weight. The boat may not be safe. At the very least, it would be very "tippy" and hard to steer. Sorry for your loss.
I wouldn't in the ocean or big big lake. Try it, slow at first.
How much does that keel weigh ? Is there a ratio I can use to figure displacement weight to weight of vessel? TIA
The keel weighs approx. 550 lbs. According to Catalina specs, the C-22 Swing Keel design weight is 2,250 (including keel). Hope that helps.

I plan on welding any chipped or weak spots. Grind smooth then paint.
