I'm no expert on that particular boat but it's nothing I would consider buying due to it's neglected state and the amount of money needed to get it back in condition to sail again.. I also think it was way overpriced before you even negotiated and at your negotiated price is still way too much money.... Before handing any money over or signing papers, I hope you get a professional survey done. The previous survey done was done too long ago to still be trusted... Professional surveys are usually the best money spent before buying any boat costing thousands of dollars.
The interior will probably clean up pretty nice once you get all the junk out but it's still going to take some work and money to get back in shape...

We immediately recognize this Philippe Harlé plan, built in Condé-sur-Noireau, Normandy, France (I worked with the neighbor of the construction site, a printer). Indestructible.
The shipyard still exists, it moved near Cherbourg (still in Normandy). Do not hesitate to ask them for information on the assembly of certain parts. In addition, the architectural firm is in La Rochelle, under the name of Mortain-Mavrikios.

Awesome!🥳🤩 congratulations Juho & Sohvi! What an amazing boat you got.
Definitely a great deal;) and good on you for lowering the price to smth more manageable.
Love the interior layout as well. Things really get interesting when the boat gets a little longer and a bit wider😜 I do truly love our Cape George cutter and that is why we put in all the work we have BUT ther is lots to be said for an Aluminum boat like a Garcia with a nice and uncompromised interior like that. And i don’t think the owner would have accepted 11k$ which is what we had😸
Ps: i would be interested in those cowl vents if for whatever reason you are removing them. I don’t see why you should though.
And now time to roll up the sleeves and get to work🤙🏽

Congratulations! Garcia have made many great boats. This seems like the perfect solution for your needs. The price is neither too high nor too low. If you do one week of cleaning and put it on the European market, you will certainly get enough extra to make it worth the job. When you’ve sailed it a bit, put lots of hours and a significant amount of money too, you’ll get at least double that price. Thus, it’s a boat that is actually worth the effort, even if you’re cynical about it, which you won’t be. :-) Good choice!

“Arctic Sailing” caught my attention. I am retired from the US Coast Guard. I’ve been to Vitus Bering’s Sea 15-20 times, usually 2 months at a time, 3 months twice. In all that time I saw 2 sailboats in the Aleutian Islands. A sloop of just 30-35 feet in Dutch Harbor and a ketch of 60-70 at Kiska. Doesn’t seem to be a popular destination. On the Atlantic, though, the whaler commanded by William Scoresby, Sr., had been above 81 degrees 30 minutes north courtesy of that big bite out of the Arctic Ocean’s ice caused by the Gulf Stream. That’s where he only had 2 chances to determine his position each day- LAN (Local Apparent Noon) and LAM (Local Apparent Midnight). No morning sight, no evening sight, because the sun did not set when he was there. Remarkable!

The surface of the sea turns to grease ice, the snow that comes in with the ventilation doesn’t melt, winds can be above 100 knots long enough to burn out both of the wind speed sensors, radar antennas can stop turning, and stores of baseball bats and axe handles are onboard to help de-ice (Kevlar lifelines are easier to de-ice than phosphor bronze wire rope, BTW) . . . but summers can be wonderful!

And a welcome change from delamination/osmosis issues, hull/deck joint issues, floors detaching from the hull, through deck leaks etc. So: an aluminium boat is good addition to the youtube sailing mix! CONGRATULATIONS!!
Just be careful with the daggerboard(do not forget to pull it up!!!!),I know of a Garcia that sunk within minutes after running aground with the daggerboard in the Bahamas. It ripped out the trunk and the boat went down really quick.
Just a reminder to always pull the daggerboard up first !!
Anyway, fantastic boat, fantastic deal. Enjoy!!!☮

Rig an alarm to the depth sounder via the daggerboard/lifting keel mechanism so you get bells and lights warning if you get even close to the bottom and the keels still down.

A very nice boat. I really like the lines (looks like she can move), and the interior is fantastic. I know it’s bigger than the camera can show. It deserves to sail again. Who better to bring it back to life. I am confident that it will repay your efforts. The clean up, refit videos to follow are going to be great. I genuinely can’t wait. Itching to see the interior emptied out. Wishing you a smooth transition, from one amazing boat to another.

Could you please tell more about the process how you found this boat? Which websites you used, which are reliable which are not? What information someone needs to find online at least before continuing to look into a certain boat etc. How long did the process take for you and how many boats were on your shortlist? Like if someone also considers buying a project boat:) thank you

Yes service the winches...and ground handling check the rigging if the sails look grubby thats no big deal to stopping testing... Nav lights ...the cooker should be fine with a clean and the pipes/hoses checked.
I imagine shes already got diesel heating but if not theres plenty of space to fit heaters.

Don’t let people tell you you paid too much. You might spent 75k on it to make her nice. Don’t think you could find a nice one for under 200. We are building a 50‘ Berckemeyer. Just our deck hardware costs more than your boat… like you said, get her safe and get her sailing. The rest will fall into place. Good luck. Maybe we will meet one day out there… H.

Going from an asking price of $85k down to a selling price of $57k took some great negotiating skills. It's going to take a lot of work and $$ to get it ready for the water. Did you say the boat is in California? If so, that is going to be a long sailing trip to get it back to Iceland. Good luck!

I knew nothing about this boat, but my instinct was that you knew all that was required and that there were credible reasons for you to fly to the US to thoroughly inspect, assess and test this boat!
You weren't in the least deterred by it being dirty or having stood for 15 years, because those didn't matter, and you were focused on what did matter!
Your meticulously precise examination of every aspect of the boat and the professional testing you had carried out, along with the known facts of the boat prior and post it being on the hard enabled you to make a well informed decision as to the purchase of this rare, sought after boat.
Thank you for sharing your experience, you have an air of quiet, calm confidence and capability and I am happy to subscribed to follow your journey with your rather special yacht.

Congratulations. It seems that you have found a strong foundation and you will make her happy again. My favourite videos of you have been of kite skiing and fixing problems. I suppose my biggest question is interior hull insulation (assuming you will be sailing in high latitudes)? I look forward to the refit and to your solutions. It's a big job but it will be interesting to watch and I think it will be really good for your channel. I have owned my present boat for twenty years from brand new and before my children were teenagers. I have lavished her with love and care, three generators, electric toilettes, power winches and the best lingerie available. With some degree of remorse I have decided to sell her. There are spares for spares and much extra stuff that will not feature in the sale price. I cannot say that for the new boat: for the new boat I am paying through the nose! I hope that you find many spares and many good surprises with your new adventure. Fond memories, fair winds and God speed.

Hi guys. I have looked beyond the mess and the untidiness below decks. I think you have a perfect foundation for a blue water cruiser. There is plenty to do to get it where you want it but it's basically a blank canvas to put your own stamp on . good luck with this project.
