  • How to raise the mast with a $50 ATV winch and using quick connects. This allows a sailor to enjoy more time sailing and less time setting up the Catalina 22.

Hey Thanks Jeremy. Great video!! Did you ever post an updated video showing the wrench setup? You said "the cable on the winch is your forward stay and also picks up the mast". Do you mean you attached the forward stay to the wrench's cable? With you system, how do you start to lower the mast since the forward stay is attached to the deck? Thoughts? Thank you in advance!

Trying to research raising mast on 24 foot sailboat After your video I realize I have been way overthinking this. Thanks for taking time to make it. Seen a few others use same winch but you are the only one to mount permanently.

Wish you would have shown closeup and installation of the ATV winch.

It's really simple. Just take a good flat head shovel without the Handel and bolt it where the tip is facing out and the back side is facing up. It should stratel the front tip of your boat then bolt the winch on that.

How did you bolt it to the boat?

Hey Jeremy , I like your video how did you build your DIY mast raising crutch . Could you share how you built it ? I just bought a '83 catalina22 myself thanks Al

Oh I wouldn't overthink it. I just mounted a flathead shovel on the front with a 2500 atv wench from harbor freight. The Cable on the winch is your forward stay and also picks up the mast. Then the quick connects for the side stays are just chain tighteners you can find on this link north40.com/koch-industries-tightener-orange-3. After installing the quick connectors then just use chain links with your adjusters to adjust your rigging. I can show you this spring but there is a lot of snow outside and I put the boat away for the winter.

Unfortunately the video does not show it from the "business end" and you don't see the process from the front...

I agree. I will be remaking the video this summer. Please keep a look out for it.

Was the backstay connected while raising the mast? Which specific shrouds did you have disconnected when raising the mast? Was that required? I just purchased a C-22 and have the exact same idea of using a remotely controlled ATV winch to raise the mast, I just have no clue (fun intended) how to raise the mast yet.

You definitely want the backstay connected or the mast is going to keep on going. If you use a 2500 winch it will be powerful enough to tighten up the rigging but not so powerful to damage anything. Only the front shrouds needs to be disconnected. That's why I used the chain tighteners to quickly tighten them up. Important note when you take down the mast for travel make sure to bungee and organize the lines as much as possible to the mast. This will make things much easier when you raise the mast the next time you go out without having a bunch of tangles. There is definitely going to be a learning curve but when you figure out your system you'll think this is the best thing ever. I've been using this system for 3 years now and wouldn't own a trailered sailboat without it. It used to take me 2 hours of misery to raise the mast without it.

how about a roller on the mast crutch.

I'm not sure what that is. But I plan on remaking this video now that I'm better at it and I will look it up. Thanks

not sure about the winch permanent on the bow idea. My mast raising experiences, I had problems w/ the wind , seems you had no wind issues. no gin lines of or gin pole = genius! what kind of winch, my winch is on up only on the remote.

@mr zif001 I just used a harbor freight winch with the controller. It's been on there for 4 years and still works like a charm. Its a four wheeler winch. They are on clearance right now. www.harborfreight.com/2500-lb-atvutility-winch-with-wire-rope-61840.html

I posted this video to share ideas. I don't setup my account to collect funds but just enjoy helping out other sailors if I can. If you have questions I can try answering them but I don't owe anybody anything and these comments will just tell me and other people to quit wasting mine and there time.
