I did the same with mines. I’ve installed all my games that run on steam good on the Bazzite partition, and all the games that don’t, and my emulators on the windows partition. Only thing I’m hoping for soon is an Easier way to dual boot into both OS’s. Similar to what I had on the steam deck with a GUI menu. Other that I’m enjoying the hell outta the Ally X. On 2d games or cartoonish games OLED 800p deck is ok but on 3d graphical games you will notice the difference between 800p vs 1080p. Sharper and crisper image will always looks better on demanding high graphical AAA 3d games its not even close. 800p will always look pixelated when comparing side by side with a 1080p which is why I don't know why some people say deck has better screen. Play ratchet and clank rift apart compare them side by side the difference is night and day. ROG ally with that 1080p screen with 120hz and VRR which makes the overall gameplay smooth and that AMD fluid motion is always gonna be better. If you got the money by all means get the ally x.
Yeah it’s weird to me as well. I feel people want to justify why having an inferior device is better. Now don’t get me wrong I still love my OG and OLED steam decks. But in way shape or form are either of them better than the Ally X. Also the fact that everyone says the steam deck just works and there’s no tinkering is full of it. I spent just as much time getting things to work on the deck as within windows. Also trying to explain to friends and family that are not tech savvy about proton was a nightmare. Bottom line is both the steam deck are underpowered. And I understand that was their goal to make a decent enough device that could okay pc games at a cheaper price tag than with Ayaneo and the like of these other Chinese windows pc handhelds were priced at. But once Asus released a device with even better specs than those device at the $700 price tags I knew it was over. Those device had costed over $1200, which was insane.
Hoping to get some advice…. I currently have the SD LCD version and LOVE it, but am looking to upgrade. Should I keep my existing SD and just pick up the ALLY X? Or get the OLED version SD?
I’d either wait for gen 2 devices or just get the SD OLED if you can sell your SD LCD. The Ally X would be a sidegrade - an upgrade in some areas but also a significant downgrade in others. The Deck OLED on the other hand would be an unquestionable upgrade unless your eyes are super sensitive to PWM flicker.
I upgraded from the lcd steam deck to the Lenovo legion go and honestly I don’t think I could go back to that little 7” screen . And the difference in performance is crazy , especially on games with unreal engine 5 the steam deck really struggles to even play them . Perfect example is lords of the fallen 2023 looks like shit and has to be capped at 30 fps on steam deck. But on legion go it looks so good with fsr 3 and frame gen and you can bump it up to 900p or 1000p and still get 40-50 fps.
Returned the Asus Ally X for the 2nd time. The first Asus Ally X had a bad shoulder button. The 2nd Asus Ally X has alot of issues with armory crate and 3rd party launchers. If I connect my Asus Ally X to my monitor or TV, it doesn't work properly. You require a mouse and/or keyboard. It's very buggy overall. Sometimes I required restarting the system in order to get it to function properly.
@@WarAlex16 Windows is fine on handhelds. It would stand for some better optimization. But really if you treat it like a windows PC, alot of the issues are easy to configure and fix
I hate these kind of videos. It going to vary from user to user. If you use game pass or have a lot of games that won't play on Linux, rog ally x. If all your games are on stream, get the steam deck.
I would also add another category for Ally X - people who have the money to spend and want a more powerful machine. Especially since now there are easy ways to just install steam deck os on the ally x but still be able to boot into windows for those games.
Exactly, I have a pc that cost me almost 3000€ and that can run all aaa games without problems in 4K. Why am I going to spend almost 899€ on an Ally X? A pack with a PS5 and a PS Portal is still cheaper than an Ally X. The price of a Steam Deck is also absurd, but much more reasonable than the price of an Ally. People are spending money on handhelds that are quickly becoming obsolete, which are just slightly improved versions of previous releases and and we are getting closer to the new launches of GPUs(RDNA4) from AMD. Wouldn't it be better to wait for the new generation of handhelds than buy new toys?
Until it has trackpads its pointless, at least for me... I play a lot of older games, that only work well on steam deck because of the trackpads. 3ds emulation. Any sims game. RTS games as a whole. And many more older games, if the rog Ally x had oled and trackpads i might generally consider it.
Yeah, the lack of trackpads has prevented me from squeezing the trigger. I'm holding off on buying a handheld for now. With my luck I'll spend $800 on the ROG Ally X & then they'll announce the new ROG Ally 2 with better hardware & trackpads for the same price.
I use the Deck for Sims, the trackpad is GOD TIER! Also it's weird the Ally uses Win11 but the options for mouse movement are a touchscreen or joystick, none of which are intuitive. Desktop navigation on the Steam Deck is SO MUCH BETTER! It's the first handheld desktop device I've had that actually has comfortable, non-annoying mouse movement.
When do you think the Steam Deck 2 or ROG Ally 2 will release? I'm unsure if I should wait for them. I want a handheld device. So what should I do>>>> 1- Wait for the new releases. 2- Get myself an Ally X since it's new and really good, so it should last me years. 3- Get myself a Steam Deck OLED, so when the new ones come out, I won’t feel too bad about not spending $800 on the Ally X.
So I have a steam deck and I personally really like it except for one area where it really falls short. Well actually two. First, I like to read, visual novels, and if they have cinematics, there’s no guarantee that that cinematic is going to play on the steam deck. An example of this problem is in the visual novel “if my heart had wings”. Another more glaring problem, though has to do with one very important item as somebody with a physical disability, in my case, visual impairment. The accessibility suite in Linux has not been up to par compared to Windows for sometime, and I’ve used Linux off and on for 17 years. The steam deck has a magnifier, but it won’t stay on, and it’s not available across the entire system. I recently mapped the desktop magnifier to keyboard shortcuts on the steam deck itself, and a recent update, completely botched that layout. Windows on the other hand I know the accessibility suite very well and I can easily work with the software that’s already provided within windows. So this alone is a huge win for me.
Hello. Which is best the Steam deck oled or the asus rog ally x? I am returning to gaming. I used to play on the playstation 3. however I am looking for a handheld gaming pc to buy. I want to play games like COD GTA assasins creed hogwarts legacy nba etc. Which would you advise? I also do not know much about pc and settings and I am looking to avoid tinkering as much as I can. I am not too concerned with the price and minimal differences in battery lifes as I wont be playing much.
I play specifically AOE2 and AOM are my classic old games and other games that also are mouse and keyboard only games so is steam deck best then to play these games?
This was about the best comparison video I’ve ever seen. I have the z1 extreme ally, and bought a 140 w power bank (anker 737) to go with it, so I’ll stay put. Love the ally though.
Big questions for me is which ones can i mod Skyrim/Fallout/Starfield with Nexus Mods and Nolvus and also which ones could i use Splashtop Remote desktop? That way, i could possibly just play on my laptop but from the handheld.
If you're a AAA gamer who wants better performance, I recommend the ROG Ally X. But if you want a good handheld PC that costs the price of a PS4, go for the Steam Deck.
One think I want to do is also use the handheld as a mobile computer to do work which would require windows, leaning to the Ally but wondering if dual booting windoows works
This depends on what kind of games you play on your device. If you are mostly on 2d and lite 3d games or emulators like me, steam deck is way better and easier to use. But for modern and heavy games, rog Ally x is better because of better hardware.
I bought the Ally X a week and a half ago it was my first handheld pc and yesterday I returned it. It was terrible, armory crate and the command center kept glitching, it was always freezing overall just a terrible experience. I actually ordered the Steam Deck 1TB OLED today which I honestly should’ve done from the beginning
Same, the menus froze a lot, the embedded controller kept swapping inputs, and the games I wanted to play were just unstable, and I got quite a bit of experience. With performance optimization, it never made it there, imo. I contacted support, and it was very quick to get my return. My buddie has a steam deck oled dual boot, and the frametimes are much more stable and don't fluctuate like my rog ally x did.
Im fortunate enough to have both. The Oled will always be my baby. But oled doesn't matter when the games look blurry because of the hardware. The Ally X shames it on every game ive tried so far. The only problem with the X is I can't figure out how to hibernate/sleep with it on a consistent basis. Any suggestions?
I dont mind windows dont see whats the problem with windows. I have LCD steam deck and I love it. Putting it to sleep in the middle of the game is great. But Id trade it for a stronger device, if only it had 4 buttons and trackpads. It is a deal breaker. I dont know why they dont put at least one track pad and 4 buttons on the back??
The Ally X also has VRR and really good speakers but unfortunately there are already numerous reports on QC issues like stuck or squeaky buttons. BTW, Jedi Survivor works just fine on the Deck.
What if the game I want to play is not on stream, like honkai star rail or the last of us 2,let say there not on steam app, how can I play them if I can only afford the steam deck oled???
God of War should probably be played on something stronger like the Ally X. It's a graphically demanding game and there's a lot of pretty stuff to look at. I'd imagine SD wouldn't give you the best experience with it.
Some misinformation here. The Steam Deck OLED has a different processor from the original. In terms of raw power, it isn't necessarily more powerful, but it is more power efficient, allowing it to run better at low TDPs. And it is kinda unfair to knock points off the Ally for having a Windows desktop when Armory Crate exists. Especially considering the Deck also has a desktop.
4:31 Why complain about the W11 desktop when even you yourself mention you don't need to use it and there's a specific game launcher? That should not be used as a negative.
Isnt big screen mode kinda just the steam deck launcher so any complaints about things being hard to navigate atlest on steam should be fairly the same. then the xbox app is easy to navigate with a remote so it should be fine on the rogally
equation is simple - if you buy games also on other platforms than steam, it is simply better to buy *some device* that runs windows, ten you can play Steam games, Epic games, Gog games and so on....
I understand the games not working but i also have some older games that crash on my pc and cant be played that i can play ony steam deck fine. My tvs are oled and so isy monitor. Oled is hard to go bacl from. Id love to have ally x internals in a steamdeck OLED lol
I was playing Forza horizon 5 on my ally x the other day . I was playing at high settings 1080p and was getting 60 plus fps. This was at the 17 watt mode too. Steam deck just doesn't have the performance the ally does.
Steam Deck main aim is not high performance, it's battery life, ease of use (like you can pause a game, put it to sleep and wake it up to play it instantly without having to close & open the game each time). Things that any windows handheld couldn't do because the problem with windows handheld they could be awaken constantly by notifications
@@leewalker23 Ally x gets better battery life. I had both. Also the steam deck is not always easy to use. Some games require workarounds like installing different protons etc.

The base steamdeck experience is fantastic but if your not remotely familiar with Linux its a real pain point, many games require some tinkering or work arounds to run on deck so it will be something most will have to deal with at some point and for the average person thats gonna feel inconvenient and quickly become very annoying
I'm pretty much an indie gamer, but as an indie gamer, I sometimes enjoy cheats too, and at the same time some indie games needs to have trackpads. HOWEVER some indie games are available outside of Steam itself?? Holy cow, they both are truly not making this easier for me.
You're compatibility point is a little silly, if you've actually been using the steam deck you should know there are an incredible number of ways to install things on the Steam deck, and even more recently we've gotten the non-steam game launcher plug-in so you don't even have to do any desktop mode tweaking to get these launchers running. The literal only thing that I haven't been able to get going on Steam deck so far is installing games from game pass.... I can play them on cloud gaming however and I can stream from my Xbox and my PS, and every pc-based launcher out there works perfectly on the steam deck as well as all of the games for them. Compatibility rating for the steam deck on its games is BS, and most "partially compatible" games work perfectly

@@TheAlexkokonas call of duty is the biggest selling game ever year and majority of pc gamers play on windows. More people play Fortnite, call of duty, madden, destiny 2, overwatch 2 etc than they do indie games and old 360 games.
Here in the UK the ROG ALLY X costs £320 more than the SteamDeck OLED 512 GB.
i haven't tried the ally x, but I did hop straight into the steam deck oled and I've been very happy with it as most of my library ends up being either indie or not very taxing games. the steam verified system could use some work though, maybe community voting
I'm looking at my Best Buy cart right now with the Ally X
You gonna get it?
Gonna get my OLED Steam Deck tomorrow but I hope you enjoy that Ally!
I bought it don't regret it one bit coming from steam deck. Deck is better optimized but this feels like my desktop in handheld mode
@@bloodofdepanta just got it and a 4 tb ssd to dual boot.
Get it!
Love the Aly X, love that it has the best battery life. No limitations on downloading games. But i just love the feel of the steamdeck. The Aly X feels less comfortable to hold for me.
Sold my Steam Deck and got the Ally X.
Performance is so much better now, not having to butcher the graphics as much anymore, to get higher framerates. Dualboot with Windows and Steam OS is best of both worlds. I just didn't want to stay locked to Steam, and having to mess with games that didn't work properly (or at all) on the Deck. And I love having VRR on this thing.
how you finding the dual boot on the ally x
Is the lack of oled noticeable
@@hendrawardihad the oled switch and oled steam deck. No it’s not that noticeable. Ally screen is 1080p so it has better pixel density than Steam deck. And the colors on the Ally is great. Oled and hdr is nice but it’s really just even brighter colors and the blacks are fully black but idk going back and forth between the 2 and it’s not like no super next gen thing.
Now if OLED 1080p hdr VRR 120hz 7-8.8 inch screen come out, NOW WE TALKING‼️‼️
@@hendrawardiNo not at all. I own both device and the LCD screen in the Ally X is beautiful. Very crisp resolution and colors. And the 120hz VRR refresh rate is just OD. All your games will look silky smooth running on the device.
Haven’t even touched my $2500 rig in 3 weeks 😅.
@@Jglover32 sell the steam deck and just keep the x.
My advice is that you should keep your SD LCD, until the release of a new version or generation of handhelds, maybe a SD 2 or an Ally 2.
Sell the LCD and upgrade to the OLED, you won't regret it
I’d either wait for gen 2 devices or just get the SD OLED if you can sell your SD LCD.

@SWOTHDRA why you triggered. Just admit windows 11 isn't great for handhelds lol

But steam deck is showing its age now and can’t do newer aaa steam games like the ally can.
4 real
I would also add another category for Ally X - people who have the money to spend and want a more powerful machine. Especially since now there are easy ways to just install steam deck os on the ally x but still be able to boot into windows for those games.
This is actually a good argument. Also, if budget is not a concern, then I think going for Ally X is good.
Wouldn't it be better to wait for the new generation of handhelds than buy new toys?
steam deck oled limited edition looks so cool compared to the regular stock one, wished they kept making them
The screen is horrible tho
@@SWOTHDRA Wdym?
I agree!
Yeah that’s what holds me back on any other handhelds. Until you use trackpads they won’t understand how useful it is
I’m really not sure on which one to get
When do you think the Steam Deck 2 or ROG Ally 2 will release? I'm unsure if I should wait for them. I want a handheld device. So what should I do>>>>
1- Wait for the new releases.
2- Get myself an Ally X since it's new and really good, so it should last me years.
3- Get myself a Steam Deck OLED, so when the new ones come out, I won’t feel too bad about not spending $800 on the Ally X.
I have the high-end Ryzen Z1 Extreme edition of the original ROG Ally and I love it!
There are SteamOS clones out there that you can put on the Ally X if you want to reimage it
Silly question but would you be able to run emulators on either of these handhelds pretty well?? Definitely torn between these two 😩
The steam deck is def where it's at if you want to run emulators it's absolutely amazing and simple
I love my steam decks emulation ability, got some old gamecube, dreamcast and playstation/ps2 games on there that i used to love as a kid
Question: if someone said they’d buy you either one (so price isn’t a variable) which one would you pick?
Ally X
(Considering compatibility)
Ally x no doubt
SD OLED. No VRR, worse battery life, resolution, speakers, game compatibility and performance, comparable cooling noise but way better UX, sleep function, build quality, ergonomics, trackpads, support, contrast, colors, HDR, pixel response.
Finally a video that helped me make a decision. Other dudes just make it harder to choose . Cheers Fowler!!
and which was the decision you took? i still can't decide
Big questions for me is which ones can i mod Skyrim/Fallout/Starfield with Nexus Mods and Nolvus and also which ones could i use Splashtop Remote desktop? That way, i could possibly just play on my laptop but from the handheld.
I’m thinking of grabbing a steam deck oled only because of how much I despise a-symmetrical thumbsticks
I really hope they release an OLED version of the rog ally x
If you're a AAA gamer who wants better performance, I recommend the ROG Ally X.
But if you want a good handheld PC that costs the price of a PS4, go for the Steam Deck.
One think I want to do is also use the handheld as a mobile computer to do work which would require windows, leaning to the Ally but wondering if dual booting windoows works
Guess it depends on what type of work exactly but linux has its own version of office tools which work pretty well
I was SO convinced I was going to get a steam deck. now I am debating the ASUS ROG Ally X. I am confused 😅
Could've just turned it into a Linux machine with bazzite
I’ve had mine for about a week now and had the total opposite experience. Don’t regret buying it one bit
Ordering my 1TB OLED tomorrow morning!
@@smartl4dhad my Ally x for 3 weeks & I absolutely love it!
Definitely getting the OLED Steam Deck
I have both and prefer the oled unless I need gamepass or more power.
Tell Microsoft if you find the solution for hibernate/sleep. You will be a huge help to every Windows user on this planet.
Windows never sleeps because its too busy running bloatware in the background, forcing pointless updates and harvesting users data
BTW, Jedi Survivor works just fine on the Deck.
so if you hook up the Steam Deck to an external display can it maintain 100+ fps in League of Legends?
Keep in mind you can pretty much get 1 steamdeck OLeD and one LCD model for the price of a single ROG ally X 😂😂
What if the game I want to play is not on stream, like honkai star rail or the last of us 2,let say there not on steam app, how can I play them if I can only afford the steam deck oled???
You could use emulation, ive been playing old gamecube, dreamcast, ps1/ps2 games on my steam deck. Can even do sega megadrive and Nintendo switch
you can run windows on the steamdeck (and android if you want). Dual booting is very easy with it. You can also run them through Proton or WINE.
im assuming the handfeel can be fixed with som ergonomic grips for the ally x
If I'm a majority competitive muiltiplayer type of gamer, I'd most definitely would go with the Ally x.

Hey everyone can I just sign in and have all my games on the asus Rog ally and steam deck?
Some misinformation here. The Steam Deck OLED has a different processor from the original. In terms of raw power, it isn't necessarily more powerful, but it is more power efficient, allowing it to run better at low TDPs. And it is kinda unfair to knock points off the Ally for having a Windows desktop when Armory Crate exists. Especially considering the Deck also has a desktop.
4:31 Why complain about the W11 desktop when even you yourself mention you don't need to use it and there's a specific game launcher? That should not be used as a negative.

Where in the hell can we buy these handhelds in Europe??
Steam OS is better but having W11 in your backpack ready to play anything is pretty awesome

The Steam Deck can run Windows 11. Didnt talk about that in the compatibility section.

How do I play my Xbox games offline on the ally X?
The base steamdeck experience is fantastic but if your not remotely familiar with Linux its a real pain point, many games require some tinkering or work arounds to run on deck so it will be something most will have to deal with at some point and for the average person thats gonna feel inconvenient and quickly become very annoying
I'm pretty much an indie gamer, but as an indie gamer, I sometimes enjoy cheats too, and at the same time some indie games needs to have trackpads. HOWEVER some indie games are available outside of Steam itself??
Holy cow, they both are truly not making this easier for me.
So... no mention of the Ally's VRR..?
You're compatibility point is a little silly, if you've actually been using the steam deck you should know there are an incredible number of ways to install things on the Steam deck, and even more recently we've gotten the non-steam game launcher plug-in so you don't even have to do any desktop mode tweaking to get these launchers running. The literal only thing that I haven't been able to get going on Steam deck so far is installing games from game pass.... I can play them on cloud gaming however and I can stream from my Xbox and my PS, and every pc-based launcher out there works perfectly on the steam deck as well as all of the games for them. I'm leaning into the ROG Ally X. I want to be able to access Game Pass & my Xbox library. As well as Steam Library, Emulation & full Windows 11. The extra power, full 1080p screen with 120hz & VRR makes it well worth the extra money. If only it had those damn trackpads though.
just set rog x up so steam opens up in big picture mode and its steam os but without the anti cheat not working - i never used armoury crate on mine ;)
You forgot game pass users. Sure, rog ally x can download the games, but you can still stream games with the steam deck. I can stream a triple A title on game pass for 8 hours on my steam deck oled.
what if your Playstation studio games are on steam. Would the steam deck be best or rog ally x?
I think ROC is using a cruddy display & I don’t know why anyone would praise it. In terms of colors nits brightness saturation however you want to call, it’s dull. The legion go , meanwhile, has the brightest highest saturated most vibrant LED display I’ve ever seen. b/c the display is so meh w/ ROC, I would between these options purchase a Steam OLED & just install windows on it. Neither of these devices would ever top my list tho.
Number one problem with this machine(steam deck) is anti cheat system isn't supported on it which stops games like GTA v online working and battlefield 2042 and call of duty modern warfare 3
