      The ally will definitely outlast the deck though it's not to say that it's more efficient because it's definitely not That big battery just sort of brute forces its way into a longer battery life for that hardware.
      I can only imagine if the steam deck OLED had The same sized battery.

    Here’s my take on it. If you already have a powerful PC and want something portable for those on-the-go moments, like flights or trains, the Steam Deck is the best choice. The OLED display is beautiful and the steam OS is night and day better than dealing with Windows! Not to mention the Steam Deck is so much more forgiving when you're without internet. On the other hand, if you don’t have a beasty PC at home and want a more affordable alternative to a gaming desktop with an option for on the go, the Ally is an great option. I personally returned my Ally and kept the Steam Deck, and I’ve never regretted it. The Steam Deck is a more than capable device that holds up well during long journeys. Just make sure to bring a decent power bank for backup.

    I got a steam deck oled yesterday it came in the mail. Personally for me if I’m playing a shooter online like cod I’m jumping on the actual desktop. I think it also comes down to if you have a extensive steam catalog of games already. Another thing that I think is not mentioned between the deck and ally is asus customer support, warranty claim issues, and repairabilty where I think the steam deck wins in all those categories hands down. That’s like my main reason why I never got an ally or x.

    • @jomscath1822
      @jomscath1822 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      If you’re only PC is a handheld then ROG Ally X is one to get. Also, Customer support is not as good as SD but so far the Ally X has been out for a while and there is not much of an issue besides controller squeaking. The power, the battery, the extra RAM plus the VRR & 1080p screen makes it worth the extra $150. Not to mention I can play games that I could not play on SD because it’s Linux.

    Steamdeck OLED starts at £450, Ally X starts £750
    So more like £300 difference. Most people wpuld be happy with 512gb.. if not you can upgrade to 1 or 2tb for less than valve charges with a spare drive to boot

    • @s4yto
      @s4yto 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      thats UK every market is different.

    • @fafski1199
      @fafski1199 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For a start here in the UK the cheapest OLED Steam Deck is the 512GB model at £470, not £450. And Ally X is also often priced at £700 from major retailers and not £750. The Ally X specs are also more akin to the 1TB OLED Steam Deck which priced at £570, except the Ally X has 24GB of memory (an extra 8GB) and a far more powerful APU. So if you take that into account, then that extra £130 cost over a 1TB Steam Deck, is actually probably worth it to many. Especially for those gamers wanting that better performance and those wanting zero issues whenever trying to run any game they want too.
      Also, most people aren't happy with just 512GB of storage, on devices which can run modern games. Be it a PC, a console or a handheld. 512GB really isn't that much at all, when most AAA game install sizes these days are coming in at around 80 to 125GB. Most people now want at very least 1TB or 2TB of storage.
      Also as for the SSD's, the Ally X takes the common standard, larger capacity (up to 8TB) and much cheaper 2280 M.2 SSD's. While the Steam Deck takes the less common, smaller capacity (up to 2TB) and more expensive 2230 SSD's. You can pretty much buy a 2TB 2280 SSD for the Ally X for the same price that you'd pay for a 1TB 2230 SSD, for the Steam Deck.

    As far as UI goes, Steam Big Picture mode is the exact same UI as Steam Deck now. For anything non-Steam, you can add it to Steam BPM the same way on a Windows device as you do on SteamOS. UI is the least worrisome thing, once everything is set up. Your Steam games are already there, add your non-Steam games the same way (using Steam ROM Manager [not just for ROMs]), and set Steam BPM to start at boot-up. Same easy-to-use interface as SteamOS. Not the only thing to consider with a handheld, but certainly not as big a deal as made out to be here.

I recently replayed Half life 2 on my ally at 15w and even though i could easily run it at 1080p 120 fps setting it at 720p gave me almost a whole hour more and looked almost the same (besides the scaling making it more blurry than native 720p).

I have a PS5 and a good gaming laptop, so the console is for heavy-hitting games and laptop for PC only games and now can Remote Play on both. So, I just wanted a console feel with the PC deals and the dual touchpads are amazing for games that have mouse input and I can make virtual menus (the haptics on it are amazing). Plus the Oled has a longer lasting battery and I prefer to have HDR as it works with PS5 remote play and Valve did a great job with playing a game, putting it to sleep and resuming after turning on in seconds (boot up videos reminds me of the PSP and I love it).

    My opinion... get both. Get Steam Deck OLED ONLY if it is the first limited edition version. Beautiful design that doesn't get old and is powerful enough to run some top tier games whilst still looking amazing (RDR 2, FF7: Remake, Death Stranding, Control, Batman: Arkham Knight, Like A Dragon... the first one lol, etc). Also plays Sims 4 infinitely better with the trackpads. Get the ROG Ally X for your newer gen powerhouses (Jedi: Survivor, Starfield, Forspoken, etc). Those are literally the only 3 games I've played on the Ally that didn't perform as well on the SD. FF7: Rebirth will be the 4th to up the graphic settings and mitigate constant texture pop ins. One thing you'll definitely notice is just how much more lighter the Deck is compared to the Ally X. With that beautiful screen and light feel, it's definitely a great time as a handheld. Both winners imo.

    Very fair review for both devices. They both have their pros and cons and I think it's really a case by case situation for which device is "better" depending on who is buying it. I went with the OLED Steam Deck because it's cheaper and I already have a good gaming PC + other consoles, so I don't need top of the line handheld performance. Steam Deck is more than good enough for what I'm using it for. Also cannot be overstated how stunning the OLED screen is. For a handheld I value vibrancy and inky black levels more highly over higher resolution.

    In Australia, now that the steam deck is officially released, it’s an extra $600 in my pocket to get a steam deck oled. At that price difference (and the fact that if I wanna play AAA games on my deck i’ll just stream them from my PC) it’s a no brainer to get the steam deck.

The two combined cost me about one ROG Ally. No desire to give either one up any time soon. If the Ally comes down in price might try it but Deck is just great for everything I need. Rog Ally X is clearly the better device. BUT :) it is 1065 USD here, and the Steam Deck 512GB LCD I bought on the sale for 385 USD. I do not have so much time to game ,so I could not justify the 3 times higher price, even if I could afford it if I want to. I have a lot of different monitors here at home, I have a Ultra wide screen with VA, so it has great colors with great blacks, and with my old mans bad eyes, I do not really see a big difference in colors. Not worth the extra 300 USD that the oled would have cost me.

    I have the rog ally x and I had the original ally. I honestly just dont love playing tripple AAA titles on a handheld. They are definitely playable but when I hop on my rig its just such better experience. I think for that reason if you have to have a handheld and I could go back I would probably just get a steamdeck to play indies and older games. These handhelds just arent ready for the really demanding games in my opinion. I like getting 60 fps or higher with good fidelity and you're just not gonna get that on a handheld. The rog ally is a great handheld but sometimes I wish I just went with the steam deck for a better user experience. Windows sucks on a handheld. Ill keep my rog ally x but whatever steam releases next ill probably be getting. OLED should also be the standard in screens now. My rog ally has made me lose my mind a few times with the buggy software. I dont care what anyone says it can be a buggy mess at times. For the most part it is a excellent device though.

Next gen of these handhelds will be almost perfect, they got so many things right with the Ally X, a slightly bigger and better screen will make the Ally so much better but for a true handheld the size of their screen now makes sense for portability and power-wise. The bigger the scree, the more power it drains

    I have a Steam Deck (LCD though) and I prefer gaming on streaming device. I'm rocking Logitech G Cloud for that. Playing it way more often than any other handhelds I own, although it has some flaws, one of which is non-oled screen. It just works and works good. Where PC Handhelds fall - G Cloud picks up.
    I don't use it for cloud gaming, doesn't have adequate ping for that, I use it with streaming games from my local PC.
    Comparing to the Steam Deck the main benefits are - it is a much lighter device (463 grams vs 669 grams), it has solid screen (compared to LCD version better in every way, compared to an OLED worse blacks and no HDR and only 60 Hz, but is 1080p), it has stronger battery life (10 hours on average, and doesn't depend on the game), it is as strong as your PC in terms of performance (and probably you have plenty of power for 1080p gaming).
    Bad parts are - of course you need to have PC connected to a WiFi (I exclude cloud gaming, your milage may vary), the input lag is kinda unnoticeable measured to approximately few frames, sometimes it is harder to first time launch game via streaming (it is not about streaming really, it's about that you have a controller not keyboard). And the last nasty part is - it's worse in controls compared to a god of ergonomics the Steam Deck - it doesn't have back buttons and trackpad, it's stick is weaker, and D-Pad is plain bad. However it feels good in hands, especially considering it's size and weight of the switch but with a better form and function.
    A year ago I was pleasantly surprised that local streaming is a very viable option for gaming. And now my PC handheld is just stored in a closet. Sure if you don't have PC in your flat (not the author, he has PC on the background), then it is not an option for you. But if you considering playing any modern title or can't accept 1280x800 resolution, then you should check out G Cloud. I sure there's another alternatives, although phones are 20:9 ratio which sucks, and streaming handhelds are not popular, sadly.

    I have a Steam Deck LCD, not even an Oled one, and honestly, I love it. Yes, the Steam Deck isn't the most powerful handheld, it never claimed to be, but this is not much of an issue for me as I can still play unsupported and needy games through remote play, which is a feature the Deck has built in it by default. So how powerful the Deck is become irrelevant, as it can use the power of a gaming computer to run everything at the maximum setting, and all the Deck has to do is to control the computer remotely and nothing else. This means that you can still run on the Deck any unsupported AAA game at the maximum graphic setting maintaining a long battery life... Cause its actually the computer that does the dirty job of running the game, not the Deck. The Steam Deck doesn't need to be the most powerful handheld to be a great handheld. It already has all it needs.
    P.S.: I've spent only 389€ for my 512 Gb valve certified refurbished Deck. It's just as good as a new one, but even cheaper.

    When i was looking into buying i was trying to decide between steam deck and rog ally. Eventually I decided on the oled steam deck cuz of the battery the battery on the rog ally didnt seem great and felt like that kinda went against the purpose of a handheld pc. Then the ally x came out and that things battery is tank from what ive seen but for the price of it like what $800 id rather just put that money into my actual desktop. Im really excited to see what asus and valve do with there successor systems.

    ……. I wish we could upgrade our processing power on the steam deck… that be swell…. And a money saver. And it can be number one on all categories.

    And if you have any respect for yourself then get steam deck too, unless you want to have to deal with warranty telling you that a 0.5mm scratch invalidates your right for free repairs.
    I'm not making this up

    Steam Deck overall, but as a second handheld the Rog X is solid.

    Asus has been having ALOT of issues with the ally x as well. Alot of ppl have been reporting receiving defective devices. Their customer service is terrible too. Dont expect them to honor your warranty

      Unless you bought it in Australia or any other country with strong consumer protection laws.
