    Take away:
    1) Hair is important! Curls especially
    2) Define the WAIST! Thick belt better than thin.
    3) Mostly fitted. Can wear loose with tapered cuffs, sleeves & wait. Thin fitted, slightly draped is a great balanced look.

      Agreed. I wouldn't want to wear a lot of these looks today. But she's using them as examples because fashion was going through a more traditionally 'feminine' trend cycle. Now it's all boxy separates, gender neutral pieces, athleisure wear and norm core/ugly chic. FGs are probably in heaven! But it's hard out there for TRs. If you want to be able to have fun with trends but still look your best...it's tricky.

      So true...these non celeb outfits or pieces are very dated in style and cut which is great for anyone who likes wearing these looks. I'm not a massive trend fan and I love vintage but personally it should never feel stale and boring..😀 but I am sure if it was a one to one client consultation it would be different and specific tailoring to their style.

    • @honeydew75
      @honeydew75 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      yeah same, it's hard to imagine those outfits looking good when they look quite dated, and I mean dated, not timeless. it's the combination of the dated style and texture and lack of quality of the materials since the items are probably all fast fashion, it's all in the details because the same sort of item like a white button up is still gonna follow trends each cycle and that's what can make one shirt look fresh and the other dated

    Great video! As a TR i have some fashion hacks that I would love to share:
    Wearing larger shirts and tying them at the waist
    If your jeans are a bit loose then fold your jeans upp a bit to leave your ankles exposed and create the tapering effekt
    Crop tops are generally great if you like them - paired with high waisted jeans or harem pants makes for a great casual look
    Pencil skirts look really great, I have one in jean fabric that is casual and so flattering
    For waist emfasis small waistcoats can be great over waistless or oversized tops
    Sharp shoulders are great, and so are small puffed sleeves!
    Velvet or velour is really good att bringing softness and some TR glamour to a look: I own velvet tops, dresses, jeans and skirts
    Half up half down hair is also really good at making wild curly hair (like mine) look more neat
    From Alyarts makeup tips for TRs, shinmer has been a game changer for me - I think it really suits all TRs and I wear a little as everyday makeup
    Last tip: For a simple look large and intricate earrings can bring detail to the look
    Hope these help!

    you are 100% right when you say that very soft and curly hair all around the face of theatrical romantic (as on the Rihanna's picture, where her hair is all down) is not perfect for them. I am the theatrical romantic with very curly hair and I never ever wear my hair all down. you say the difference is small, but I think is huge. Rihanna looks much better with messy bun and some curls around the face. It's crazy, but I look exactly the same (weird, too sharp, closed off and not feminine enough) with my natural curls down. With the hairstyle from another Rihanna's picture, however, (yes, I wear the same hairstyle), I look more fresh , younger and overall more feminine. When I wear hair down, it must be perfectly shaped in huge, soft, shiny waves (not small curls) by the hairdresser. In any other case, it just doesn't look right.

    I’m struggling to find theatrical romantic clothing that I like lol. I am theatrical romantic, but I love tomboyish looks, or even 90s grunge type looks or edgy looks. I wear a lot of plaid, leopard print and black with chunky combat boots. Lots of oversized jackets and sweaters, cropped cut off jeans etc. People do compliment my style so I know it’s not terrible for my frame lol! I’m wondering if you have any thoughts/advice. I feel terrible and not like myself in frilly things and pale colors.

    • @chui1726
      @chui1726 5 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      I think you could glamour your hair up as a TR element. Or if you're wearing a shirt simply tuck it in to have waist emphasis. Oversized jacket would probably be best if they're cropped. It would be loose and relaxed at the chest area but at the same time showcase your waist. Just suggestions!

    • @cianap.281
      @cianap.281 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      I hear you on the frilly/pale distaste. Those vintage 90s high-waisted jeans are great for TR (I guess you could cuff them for tapered effect or just live with not wearing 100%TR recs). Liv Tyler in Empire Records wears some cropped fuzzy sweaters that would be a great look; they allow for waist emphasis even while loose. And those 60s/90s A-line mini skirts she wears are grungy goodness. A few years back Hedi Slimane did a super-glamorous grunge rocker collection that was all velvet, satin, leather, glitz, glitter tights and moody glam, so that might give you ideas. Keep in mind that rich moody jewel tones and textures are also recommended for TR's.
      I'm an Old, so I'm honestly not sure what is "in" wrt modern grunge, but in the 90s grunge ppl were into ironic frill paired with harsh elements. Courtney love did this whole soft frilly "kinder whore" look that might be adaptable, and people were really into ruffled dresses and babydoll tops that took 30s and 40s inspo, paired with flannel shirts and boots. The lines were feminine but it wasn't saccharine. You could get further TR inspo from the 90s-does-60s look that a lot of RiotGrrl bands were into.

    • @Kpower
      @Kpower 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I think the key to TR are tapered edges, waist emphasis, and rounded glamoured edges. From what I see in your channel, you already keep your hair in TR. Your hair is simple but rounded especially towards the face. Since you like cropped cut off jeans, try wearing boots that are tighter towards the ankle. When you wear oversized jackets (guessing you like to wear them opened), wear a more fitted top under it. You can taper the edges a bit by rolling up your sleeves a bit. Even your oversized jackets. Wearing your jacket off the shoulder can also help to allow the sharpness of your shoulders to appear more. Also, make sure the sweaters aren't too heavy. try lighter fabrics.
      Most of all, remember that Merriam says you only need one or two elements of your body type. You don't need to wear TR from head to toe. I'd say, the most important thing is to keep your hair TR and make sure a few of the edges are tapered. You don't want everything to be loose because then your clothes may overpower you.
      For reference, I think Rihanna does a good job for the most part. Google "Rihanna grunge" and you'll see some good examples.

      Girl that's exactly what I was thinking ! I'm also aTR and I didn't like the outfits in the video. Merriam did a great job but it's just not my style. Like you I like darker outfit, leather, velvet etc. In the video about Soft Gamine Merriam said that TR can also wear some parts of their outfits. Personally it fits me better. Besides, I totally agree with what St.Rhinocéros said. I'm into fashion and Heidi Slimane would be a great inspiration, especially the outfits he did for Saint-Laurent a few years ago. He's my favorite designer !
      I think if I understood correctly the trick is to mix the different elements

    Satin, jersey, and rucheing (sp? lol) are HUGE right now and I think they do really well on TR's. Look for draping, rucheing, and waist emphasis most importantly. Vivid colors are also on trend and perfect for us. Barely any brands are pushing bottoms that aren't ankle taper/skinny styles. Also delicate strappy heels and shoes are huge literally everywhere, maybe because of Kim K since those were all she wore for years even when she was pregnant and she's a TR. There's plenty out there for TR's even on trendy sites like fashionnova you just have to know what exactly to look for!

    Could you perhaps update this with more emphasis on shoes? All videos about theatrical romantics suggest heels, sandals and ballet flats but they're just not practical for day-to-day wear particularly in cold climates. In the winter I live in riding boots and I'd love to know how to incorporate boots into a more theatrical romantic outfit.

    • @rainydaze806
      @rainydaze806 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Go for boots that are narrower, maybe with a slight wedge heel. Boots should never be chunky or heavy looking, and should never hide the delicate shape of your legs or feet. I find that ankle-length works best. That’s what works for me as a TR. My favorite winter boots are pretty simple looking and suits any look, they are leather and ankle-length with a slight wedge heel, with small side zippers.

    I would love to see a video comparing Romantics and Soft Dramatics. On the surface it seems obvious but there can be tall romantics and shorter soft dramatics (ie you can BE tall but LOOK short and vice versa). Furthermore, the advice Kibbe gives them is quite similar. The differences seem to be small rounded lines vs large rounded lines. I've seen a few people online wondering this as well but not a lot of information. I would love a video on your opinion on this matter.

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ok I'll keep it in mind for future videos. It makes sense that this is the recommendation because dramatics have larger skeletons on which the yin (roundness, softness) sits, so they have larger rounded lines. Romantics have a small skeleton on which the yin sits, so they have smaller rounded lines.

I feel like many of the standard recommendations for FN might work if you're a celebrity and have a lifestyle where you can pull of crazy hair, floor lenght dresses with deep Vs, avant garde fashion, etc. That may not work if you're a regular person who just wants to dress up a bit and look nice, in your own lines, while going to a nicer dinner or an event or a party that's not the Oscars. :) More tips on that look for FNs would be greatly appreciated.

Aldo, as a very curly haired girl I think the sharp face counturs of a TR are better complemented by half up half downs or updos, because otherwise the facial features kinda blurr among all the wispy hair. I share your point of view about the casual looks too, but I struggle to find more well fitted clothes! That's maybe why I like vintage inspired pieces: back in the days the life of romantics was waaaay more simple! 😉

I really like to wear belts, but a lot of times I go for soft emphasis on my waist (comfort). You are doing an amazing job and I love all your vids! XO

      Thank you! As a soft gamine myself, I also need sharp waist emphasis, but also don't like the discomfort of belts sometimes. I have this one stretchy belt that I wear though that works well (I included some stretchy belts in the video). They also have the benefit of being slightly thinner in texture so they don't add half an inch to the waist as a leather belt would for example, and I find it's sometimes even more comfortable to wear a belt like that with a dress, than to wear high waisted tight pants. (also forgot to mention in the video that bulky belts wouldn't look great on any romantic, but hopefully that's implied because romantics are all about softness, etc!!).

    Thank you so much for this! I think this finally confirmed to me what I'd suspected - that I'm a theatrical romantic. The main thing that confused me was that I have a waistline more like Mila Kunis and not the classic hourglass figure, but your words on that really helped me feel better about it. Not only that, but I found them true to my experience. Despite my waist not being as small, I really do look a lot better with waist emphasis! In fact, in retrospect, the outfits that have looked best on me over the years are ones that fit into the theatrical romantic style. I feel like I've finally cracked the code!

      I'm enjoying your Kibbe quizzes lately. I'm TR and I MUST have properly fitted shoulders. Like the seams must hit JUST right even on a casual T-shirt. (I used to think I was just neurotic, but I get why now). My ideal casual outfit: high waisted harem pants with a tight-ish tucked-in T-shirt (open but not-too-low neckline or just at the base of my neck, as long as the shoulders and bust are cut just right, no wrinkles), glittery metallic sandals, smokey eye, hair up. My controversial best outfit: 60s wool A-line skirt or kilt that ends a few inches above the knee, fitted cashmere mock-turtleneck worn un-tucked, tights, ankle boots with heels (all in dark jewel tones), smokey eye, dramatic side part with the small half pulled back. Shouldn't be a TR best but damn it works. Less controversial: baby tee tucked into high-waisted cigarette pants, big hair.
      ETA: I forgot my worst! big boxy shirts that hang like a tent down to my crotch in front, but sit bunched up at the top of my butt in the back. I.e., all shirts that are longer than hipbone length. Traditional menswear-cut blazers and jackets that end low on the hip, low- or mid-rise wide leg trousers, or worse: those trousers WITH those blazers. It's supposed to look professional but SOMEHOW makes me look like a hippie?!

    • @unneighborlyarcades6356
      @unneighborlyarcades6356 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cianap.281 I would think the blazer/jacket that ends low paired with wide-legged trousers would be a D look (disagreements welcome, as they help me learn) and so it makes sense that it would not suit you. And it even makes sense that it would make you look like a hippie because I imagine fitted-ness to be an element your smaller, sharp bone structure requires. Such an outfit would look comical on me as well, though I would look underfed, rather than hippie-ish.
      I love that you included your "controversial best"-how interesting! Do you think there are some elements that "carry" the outfit and help explain why it looks so good despite the fact that it "isn't supposed to"? I picture an outfit with waist-definition and some straight lines created by the skirt and fitted shoulders, which I can imagine looking very cute.

      @cianap.281 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@unneighborlyarcades6356 What you said about fittedness, waist definition and selective sharpness in the "controversial best" sounds about right to me. I don't know why a kilt is better on me than a pencil skirt (they look ok, but I always feel like I'm trapped inside them and they aren't ever sitting quite right), and honestly any attempt to try to explain it via Kibbe would just be a rationalization on my part.

    Thank u for another Kibbe styling video 💜 I like that u encourage us to not focus on one thing (such as having a tiny waist vs slightly inward waist) bc it doesn't dominate the romantic body type. Great thinking!
    So I'm more than likely a classic with a tiny yang skeleton but have random soft & thick areas lol like face, bust & sometimes tummy. I'm pretty even all over w/ small hips... (otherwise if I had hips I'd think I was a theatrical romantic!) All I know is I look my best in clean classic fitted clothes monochromatic w/ very little print. My biggest struggle is finding variety in clothes that dont emphasize my tummy. Sometimes the result of wearing fitted clothes. Also how can I look more romantic without feeling like a little girl in mother's clothes or appear pear-shaped? I'd also love to know if I can wear bold whimsical tops with funny sayings on them...without looking like a woman wearing kids clothes. I've tried a lot of things and now I've gotten rid of 2/3 of my closet!

I've been looking for shirts like the green one at 9:14, the purple one at 12:09 and the one on the left at 17:00 so I must be doing it right! 🙂 Also wrap shirts with fitted waists and flutter sleeves. Not sure if it's the best flattering choice for my body type but it's an upgrade from the blah t shirts. I have to have some kind of frill, detail or pattern or else my outfit gives that effect like a woman that loves wearing make up going without and looking tired or sick. I don't know how to best explain it. Just very flat I guess. Standard casual was so eck on me I gave up on classic blue jeans for the stretchy colored pants. I'm about to move to 75% dresses. So prior to this video, I have been wondering about whether I'm theatrical romantic, soft natural, soft dramatic or even soft gamine and I think watching more of your videos and analyzing my photos as opposed to just looking at myself in the mirror is really pointing me to better direction of what my body type could possibly be, although I think I still have a long way to go. I've got a lot of D's in my answers on the test and I have a very large bust as well no matter what my weight is so at first I thought I was a theatrical romantic or romantic. But then after watching more videos from you, I think from my understanding, Theatrical Romantics are very yin but just have some yang undercurrents coming through, meaning their bones and flesh are still very yin, with just a few sharp yang elements. Whereas a Soft Dramatic(perhaps a soft natural as well) is very yang with just a few yin undercurrents, mostly coming from the flesh than the bones. That's when I realized, that I couldn't be a romantic at all. First of, I've always looked very long limbed and tall ever since I was a kid. In pictures and in real life, my head always looks way too tiny for the rest of my torso. I have small waist, but my waist is not defined enough because of my yang hips so I knew I couldn't be a romantic. After analyzing my answers from the tests, despite having 6 D's, I also had 4/5 A's and 2 B's, all of which are coming from my bone structure and then the D answers mostly comes from my bustline and my face usually in the fleshy bits and very few are coming from the bones. A lot of times, I was even debating between choosing C or D for a lot of my D answers so that really showed me I'm not yin enough to be a romantic, and I don't have enough balance or contrast in my bone structure to be a classic or a gamine(just for reference, in the tests I have 6 D's, 4/5 A's, 2/3 B's and 2 C's).
    I think your videos has helped me narrow down my choices enough for me to truly pinpoint what my body type really is. I also looked at my old pictures at different weights, wearing clothes suited for different body types. I noticed that wearing Gamine and Romantic lines(both clothes and hair) makes my body/torso look more grandiose, and significantly emphasizes how small my head is compared to the rest of my body(if that even makes sense). I also noticed that wearing clothes/hair something along the lines of classic is not that bad on me but I know long, loose, boxy clothing of a natural looks way too big and separate for my body(like I'm wearing a sack of potatoes or often times I look matronly). I know I can carry bold colors, prints and details so that really cancels the romantic out, so I think what I should most definitely explore and understand the Dramatic lines as I think in pictures that's where I look most harmonious. But I'm open to exploring other body types as well just to be sure that I really am a Dramatic(or a sub type of it) and not something else(like some subtypes of Natural, Classics or Gamines perhaps).

But the hair recommendations always threw me a tiny bit off but not TOO much where it was still similar to the other soft types. So because of this I recently starting questioning if I’m a SN or even FG. But so much of what you’re saying here resonates with me that it would weird me out if I’m not this type. I’ve even wondered if I’m some weird blend of a type. I just NEVER would consider myself as a part of the romantic family bc of all the stereotypes of assumptions. I’m not giving up yet. I wouldn't mind seeing a casual looks for gamine video. Especially with some summer clothes/swimwear as those are the things I seem to have a lot of trouble with. Plain shorts and a t-shirt can sometimes be too little detail or lacking in crispness and end up looking too natural on me, if you know what I mean.

      This question intrigues me, as it is an area of confusion for me as well. Both, after all, have yin flesh and facial features with a yang skeleton. Reading over their descriptions, I've come to notice a few things. Where there is sharpness in the TR, there is broad angularity in the SG. Where there is narrowness in the TR, there is width in the SG. SGs tend toward fleshiness, while TRs are described as "trim and smallish". I've yet to crack the code, but I feel these points will be helpful in that endeavor!

    Being a TR and a Summer in coloring, how do I wear those beautiful bright cool colors without breaking the silhouette? I don’t like wearing pastels or monochromatic looks

    • @valentinec2891
      @valentinec2891 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Late answer but instead of monochromatic you can try low contrast to do not break the silhouette

    • @valentinec2891
      @valentinec2891 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For example you love a bright pink top, instead of wearing it with black pants, try a beige one with it, the contrast level will be wayyy lower

    what do i do if i‘m theatrical romantic but really like the natural style?

    • @PolarBear-rc4ks

      You could try incorporating natural lines into your clothing? You don't have to be TR clothes from head to toe, just majority, but with some natural pieces to mix it up.
      At the end of the day you can wear whatever you like.

      I mix these styles my ROMANTIC elements are a fitted and emphasized waist always...fitted cuffs and ankles. My hair is natural long and loose but a little curve because my hair is naturally beach waves. My skirts usually are flowing and if short usually have some flare at the bottom...I look amazing in milkmaid tops,,peplums, deep,v necks, some small ruffles on deep v vecks. For shoes I wear riding boots with ankle or maxi skirts in winter, sandals in summer or ballet flats....I never wear sports shoes. I LIKE. Velvets, shiny fabrics no hard fabrics never pointed collar button up shirts. MY favorite accessory is medium to wide belts for waist emphasis and I have many.

    Merriam, speaking of how one or two questions don't make or break a body type, that it's more about the overall lines, as in the case of a theatrical romantic with an answer B-waist or a dramatic/flamboyant natural with a smaller waist... Could you do a video typing/explaining some of the flamboyant naturals with more curves? I saw Aly Arts thoughts on Shailene Woodley being a flamboyant natural, and also many people type Angelina Jolie as either flamboyant natural or natural. With both these women I can see a lot of softness in the figure and facial features, as with Jennifer Lawrence who Kibbe types as flamboyant natural. That makes me kind of confused on why soft natural isn't being suggested for these three ladies. I think they all have a long vertical line and long limbs, which of course is associated with FN. But as you point out, there are 15 questions in the test and those are just 2 answers, and I think all of them would get a couple of D or E-answers if you typed them. I don't really understand why there dramatic undercurrent is being considered stronger than their yin undercurrent. What are your thoughts on this?

      Heather Helena because of their broad shoulders and broad bones in the uber part of their body that give a squarish effect and make them look heavier than soft naturals or naturals

    • @heatherhelena9090
      @heatherhelena9090 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@HL-er8sk I see the point about broad bones and looking heavy, and I think it's noticable in some (or most) cases. But then again, what is the point of paying attention to someone's figure, flesh and facial features, if the broadness of shoulders and bones trumps all? Especially since all naturals have a soft yang skeleton, with broader shoulders and larger bones, and can look a bit heavy. If it's the overall yin/yang balance that matters, how can being curvy and having yin face matter to such a small degree? I think it's hard to tell with tall naturals who still look feminine and curvy, who seem to have both some drama and some softness. That's why I'd love to see someone actually go through the test and answer it question by question, just so I could understand it better. I used to think I was soft natural and I'm usually told that I look good with waist emphasis, but now I'm thinking I might not be able to tell the difference between different kinds of naturals.

      I second this! I remember Merriam saying in the Confused by the Kibbe Test video that the confusion is often between two different types, like SN and R, not between to different subtypes, like FG or SG. For me it's the opposite, I think the larger type is easier to figure out, but the undercurrent might be trickier. If the confusion is between two types you can just try on and compare the clothes, but I don't know if comparing the clothes will make the subtype more obvious.

      This thread has me thinking.... Merriam or Ally said recently, the skeleton is the base. How we gain or lose weight represents the flesh. When recovering from surgery, I lost weight all over except my bust! As I recovered, I gained evenly all over. I concluded I'm a classic with extra bust lol (bc my shoulders are my widest point. [This why I feel if I HAD hips I'd be TR.] Secondary, I decided my round cheeks, soft tummy were just soft ying elements, not the base. And that my thin neck shoulders, long arms/feet & small butt are not natural, but give me yang sharpness under the flesh. I'm pretty sure I'm a dramatic classic with full bust. But I do plan to get Merriams typing done to confirm! It's not easy...but intriguing to figure out 💜

    Oh, Myriam, i would love to see t. Romantics or romantics on different style, and not in the stereotypical ones. F. example, on Rock badass , classic, grunge, boho etc...By the way, is it possible that t. Romantics can look good in soft classic outfits? I feel like i can do Both and also some soft gamine too...

    I have no problem with peplum tops in principal although as great as they are for curvy ladies they never fit them:) I have not seen one peplum top yet that would be small enough in my waist and that I could breath in at the same time (aka enough volume in chest). I may have to buy one and get it tailored. I suspect myself of being TR (just based on your videos on my favourite photos of myself I have TR round neck tee and skinny jeans and on the other one lacy dress with round neckline and half up half down hair, I don't like frills at all so I didn't like frilly dress from dress test and I am tall so it was super hard to arrive to this conclusion but it must be true). Anyway, thank you for more in depth videos about casual style, super helpful:).
