      that was a terrific video with lots of examples. one thing i’m wondering about is, i’m fairly certain i’m a soft gamine. (aly art says looking like a teenager). also, i have a strong ingenue essence. but... i’m middle aged! people think i’m much younger than i am, but that won’t last forever. Audrey Hepburn adopted what i think was a fairly disappointing aesthetic as she aged. I’m wondering if you have thoughts or could develop style recommendations for romantics and gamines as they get older?

    I love this video because I think people, myself included, can get hung up on finding or staying in one set of lines. This really showcases how you can be a theatrical romantic but emphasize your more romantic lines or soft gamine lines to achieve a specific effect without it feeling separate from you. Thank you!

    Fascinating video! Interesting to see how you can borrow elements from other types to achieve certain effects! Merriam, here is a video request: I'm so curious to see how mature Gamine women (50-60-70 + years) rock their style! That would be so interesting to see how you can tweak it, and still be true to your style! (And of course all the other types too, but since I'm a Gamine - SG - that's my first wish!)Thank you! 🧡🏵️😊

    I'd love for you to do a video on Eva Green. I suspect she's dramatic classic yet she looks amazing in lush, ornate clothes and make up that might in theory be more appropriate on soft dramatics. Shirley Manson also confuses me. I think she is soft classic but her 90s signature look was heavy eyeliner and lipstick. Both have mysterious and droopy eyes and look great in slightly Gothic make up. I wonder if that's a coincidence?

    I have been checking out evening and party dresses with Kibbe body typing in my head and geez, it is so hard to find something that matches my TR lines. Last March I went to a wedding with a nice, mauve dress that goes with my cool and delicate undertone, but I felt it weird looking on me. Turns out it has soft natural vibes with a strong vertical line that I don't have. Looking back, it was the only option I found after months of browsing. Yesterday I was checking several online boutiques and most dresses are either dramatic or natural, some classic and even a few gamines, but not romantic or TR. So I thought about what you have said about elegance, ethereal essence and keeping some of my TR elements, so I figured I could find my answer within the sort of whimsical vibe maxidresses that are not often labeled as party dresses but go with my body type. Thanks a lot, Merriam. 💖

    Wow , you and Aly put out videos about Kibbe types at the same time , this is great!

      @everlastingideas8625 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@merriamstyle Thank you a lot for answering. I m a bit tall 1,69 with an hourglass figure (my waist is pretty think and angular) so that s why I ruled out FN. I look good with waist emphasis and like a potato sack with oversized or unstructured clothes, you look beautiful by the way!

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aww thank you! Yeah if you look like a 'potato sack' without waist emphasis, you may not be FN. But, it's also possible for FN to look like a 'potato sack' if they wear an unconstructed *short* top because FN lines are longer, and a short unconstructed top would look poofy on them and disproportionate.
      If you haven't already, you could check out my SD vs SN video, where I talk about the differences in the bones mainly (because SD and SN both have soft flesh and yin facial features). So if you're looking to figure out if you have Dramatic bones, or Natural bones, that may be useful!

    Hi Merriam,
    I love watching your videos - they are brilliant and very informative. I’ve always found it easy to help others shop for clothes, but not myself and your videos are helping me become more objective about my body type.
    I’m pretty sure I’m in the Natural body type group. My question/ request is for a future video that covers body types that have unusual proportions. By this, I mean, I am 5’6” and a UK size 14 (US size 10), except I have v.large boobs UK size 34J (US - 34M). They are home-grown, and really don’t change much in size with weight gain/loss...expect back-size may go up/down. Trying to look even remotely in proportion is a huge task. Is this something which affects which body-type one is classified as, or do the lines need to be modified to accommodate?
    I think this topic would make for an interesting video, not only because the of my personal interest but because I’m sure I’m not the only person out there that has a similar issue, where their personal body proportions cause them a challenge.
    Thank you for all your time, effort and thought that you put into your videos!
    Jo

    Hah this is great. I am THeatrical Romantic and go this way exactly to toughen up my look when I want to...the exact items of clothing I use. Odd that somehow I stumbled onto that. When I worked professionally I wore suits most o f the time and a co-worker male told me one day I looked "terryfying" I came home and told my husband and we both laughed our heads off and still do about that comment. I am 5'4" curvy girly blonde who looks WAY younger than I am and always struggled to look as serious as my personality actually was , re my professional life. My body and coloring gave out pure feminine signals that I had to constantly work against. I wish I knew what I was wearing that day bec. I enjoyed being taken super seriously (at work, never in my personal life).

    Think she is a - thinner as mostly usual - soft dramatic, looking still herself with some SG/TR elements/vibes. I think so cause we pretty simular and I have a tuff time finding out SG/TR is not always the right for ME than its stiff, very tailord, shortish lines, very mixy matchy, too delicate... or colorblocking too. Cause of a bit Youthnes and beeing thin, some SG lines not that bad, but than compare to SD outfit/Dress, it standsout that the SG not really feels like her or my own skin.
    high neckline, T Silhouette, dramatic curvy vibes with showing narrowness and soft edges while really not going for short lines is perfekt for "us" - but of cause we not the same, we are just in one bodyfamily.

    I thought it's just the other way around… so when a TR wears SG lines combining yin and yang, wearing something more yang (because TR is softer) would make a TR look softer and not "badass"- i thought this would work when a SG wears TR lines bc they pick up the yin of SG and a bit of the yang but still the yang would kind of stand out and make a SG look more yang and so more badass and not cute- would be nice if you'd talk a little more detailed about "Breaking Kibbes Rules"!

    Hey what's the difference between romantic men and gamine men? I thought I was flamboyant gamine but wonder if I'm a theatrical romantic and when I compare the types for men they seem similar but I can't use the idea with women where as romantic females can look more womanly rather than girly or boyish

    • @unneighborlyarcades6356
      @unneighborlyarcades6356 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think with men, we have to look for yin characteristics in their height, the softness of their flesh (especially in the face), and the facial features.
      I can describe a gamine man in pretty good detail. My older brother is, without a doubt, gamine. (Possibly flamboyant gamine.) His shoulders are square, but narrow-As is his entire frame. He looks a bit like a small rectangle with a larger head relative to his body. His facial features are A-dominant, but the flesh on his face is very soft.
      I imagine a romantic's facial features would be a bit more rounded and full and their skeleton would be less angular-less squarish. Elvis Presley is an example of a romantic. His facial features are rounded, the flesh on his face is quite soft, his jaw isn't too wide, and his shoulders are more sloped than sharp. These are things I notice when looking at his pictures.
      Aly Art has a video where she compares the Kibbe body-types of men (romantics and gamines are in part 2) which will probably be more helpful.

  • @unneighborlyarcades6356
    @unneighborlyarcades6356 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love that you emphasize that we can wear different lines depending upon the look we wish to give off.
    Here is a question that is not really related to the video, but I'm curious and must ask:
    For what type is the baby-doll dress made? The sort that are fitted at the breasts and then flow loosely from where the bra-band would be to above the knee. I'm not entirely sure if they are called "baby doll" dresses, but I happen to call them that.
    I thought initially that they are soft gamine, but that might just be because these dresses are cute and I fear I'm conflating soft gamine with ingenue. That is to say, my preconceived notion that a soft gamine is "cute" is informing my opinion that a baby-doll dress is soft gamine. (Even if I am outwardly aware that not all soft gamines are cute, I may not be inwardly aware. Hopefully that makes sense.)

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I call it that too! I think it could depend on the specific babydoll dress.I would say probably romantic if the fabric is very flowy and lightweight, and the dress is short. (I'm thinking of those babydoll lingerie items, because they also often have lower necklines). If the neckline is high, then maybe soft gamine. Even though babydoll doesn't necessarily have enough waist emphasis for either of these types, it still has lightweight fabrics usually, and also frills, etc. More romantic I'd say if I had to choose!

    • @unneighborlyarcades6356
      @unneighborlyarcades6356 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@merriamstyle Thank you so much for answering my question. Baby-doll dresses seemed frustratingly unclassifiable. They most definitely seem very yin, but I ruled romantics and theatrical romantics out because of the lack of a defined waist. I suppose I should remember that, so long as many romantic elements are present, it is ok for one element to be missing.

    I love these videos! But still I feel completely lost in my body type. Everytime I think I figured it out... everything changes after I watch another video :'). And I have been watching these videos for over half a year now. I am lost between R, TR, SC, SD ánd SN. Haha quite a bunch! My test results were very mixed. Romantic and classic features were even.
    Something all bodytypes don't cover, but is actually a very common body feature in my country, are wide upper legs... thunderlike. So relatively short, but 'strong' legs so to say. But together with
    * small hands,
    * romantic facial features
    * a very large butt
    * small(er) waste
    * small shoulders
    * average bust
    this makes me doubt what I am... :)
    Also I am about 1.69 tall and currently slightly overweight. And whereas kibbe defines this as too tall for R types... in my country I am very average if not on the smaller side. So my vibe within my social context/country is not large (dramatic) in such sense...
    So still R or TR? Or SD perhaps? I really have no clue!

    • @ju2082
      @ju2082 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      According to your description and your profile pic it seems like you are a yin type, so R or TR, sounds more like pure romantic. Too "unbalanced" (in Kibbe theory) for soft classic, and no yang for SN or SD. You should try R and TR clothes on now to see which you think looks better. I am not an expert though so I hope I was at least a little bit helpful, and didn't confuse you in case there is a mistake in my analysis. Take care

    Ha.. i see now.. i always wonder why many girls nowaday wear soft gamine clothes: like high neck line, waist emphasist, broken silhouette. It make them more sexy, more femine. Plus, i think the high neck line makes pp pull attention up to the neck, make pp think that you’re taller, elongated which makes you sexier than short line. The ones who look sexy in v-neck, definitely have really long legs. Thank you for the great information.

      @@merriamstyle Same here :'( I'm either a TR, R or SC. My skeleton is yin with a slight yang undercurrent, and my flesh is all yin. Soooo confusing! And i definitely can't afford your help :(

      IfYouMeetAWolf, if you’re only slight yang (an answer or two in the yang skeleton), you’re probably romantic. Three yang answers might put you into theatrical romantic. Soft classic if you have more than 4 yang answers with an overall longer vertical line as one of those answers? But if you are shorter with a shorter appearance, that’s pretty solidly R or TR.

      @@astonish_injurer5598 Thank you both for your help (Sorry Georgiana, i must've forgotten to answer you), but i'm 80% sure that i am a soft gamine (very close to TR tho)! My answers changed the more i learnt to see what kibbe actually meant with ehats considered yin/yang. I have a bit more Yang in skeleton than i initially though of it as.

    No. She makes a better redhead woman than blonde. Blonde washes her all out.
