Oh, wow. I knew they changed his face after the reveal trailers, but it's been so long since I've seen them that I didn't realize just how drastic the change was.
I can see what you're saying and I feel it. But for me it's a downgrade in some areas, and a creative choice in others. As a dev, I can see the limitations in what the rig can do, and there are very very very minimal details that make is a downgrade, like with subsurface scattering (skin texture) and muscle dynamics. I can see, with time constraints, and engine constraints, where they may have "faked shit because they were confident they could bring in an easier version to work with the rest of the systems, so the game doesn't break." This shit can get delicate since these presented cutscenes run in-engine and aren't CGI. Otherwise, why in the world would they downgrade after having gone through all the complicated trouble of animating something so preciously. I know you aren't implying this, but this is a far cry from false advertisement. And then some other areas, I agree with some people here saying that some expressions are exaggerated, and some camera movements are a bit too intense. So these changes were definitely intentional in design. Up to you if you think they were a downgrade. That first scene with the mirror looks hideous in the trailer, and the emotion conveyed is more comical than serious. He's a determined man, on a mission. That is his written character, and his debilitation is his arc. Not some average guy who's somewhat cowardly, because what, then his arc would be that he turns into a hero? Very predictable. Or is he cowardly throughout and continues to be cowardly all the way to the end? Super annoying. What we got is perfectly fitting. Now, cinematographically speaking, when you can clearly see his entire face like that, it feels like the lighting is unnatural. Giving it an uncanny valley feeling, even though it looks "realistic because it has a lot of details and you can see each detail clearly". It's just not aesthetically pleasing.
I actually like the beta breakdown shot more, I can tell it's the same motion capture performance but the different angle, lens, and dynamic zoom make it far more impactful. The beta elevator chase face is exaggerated to the point of comedy though, it's SO over-the-top. Reminds me of that beta still of the Sonic Unleashed CG opening where he's got that super exaggerated pain expression with the tiny eyes and giant mouth that game journos love to use in Sonic hit pieces
Honestly some of the reveal trailer looks better than the final release. Like, the only part where the exaggerated face animations would've worked was in the elevator scene, it doesn't even physically look possible for the words hes saying would come out the way they sound with how much they limited the facial movement, really dulls down the intensity of that scene. Also the cinematography looked way more unique and trippy during the double pyramid head boss scene, honestly it looked like that entire part of james being on his knees with the camera cutting to a close up of his face could've been one long shot (which i felt the remake was lacking, way too much cutting and not enough lingering shots) and also would've worked so well for that monologue. Otherwise I mostly love how the game turned out, the hate this game gets is so stupid.
His face looks like it could be a real person with the final release, it doesn't have that uncanny valley feel, too bad they couldn't do that Maria and Angela lol.
Actually now that a certain theory of the game was just broken wide open by Reddit (the photos), maybe there’s a reason why the original face looks that haggard. It’s because it’s meant to be OLDER than James in the original game
Seems like they just de aged the actor who's in his late 40's. Luke Roberts. His younger self looks identical to the remake now. It would make sense as well considering James is in his late 20's - early 30's in Silent Hill 2. Def a good choice for them to make this change. The one on the left looks way older so they probably initially used Roberts face without the de aged
The reveal trailer James looked closer to how he looked in the OG cinematic when he's looking in the mirror (mainly his cheekbones), but I definitely love the retail version of James a lot more, just looks better aesthetically. Glad they made him less emotional too as he shows very little emotion in the OG game which is part of what added to the dream-like feel of the game. Incredible remake, hope Bloober does a remake of SH1 after they finish Cronos.
I prefer the cinematic shots of the Reveal honestly and the way his hair moved in that one shot was perfect... Retail James is obviously better cause he looks like his age
In the trailer i didn't mind how gaunt he looked, so much as his expressions. The unhealthy, almost skeletal look he had would make sense considering how long he had been living with grief and subconscious guilt, but his looking so sad and guilty gives too much away and is also inconsistent with someone who has basically just given up and no longer cares whether or not they die horribly at the hand of eldritch abominations. He cares enough to push forward, but has otherwise emotionally checked out...he might be aware of how he SHOULD feel, but can't bring himself to make the jump and express it. I'm glad the retail release reflects that now.
As great as the improvements were, a big standout with the corrections was the weird hero lighting around james' hair that gives it a weird unnatural glow. I get he actually looks blonde now, but it kinda breaks the immersion a little bit in that regard sewing his hair glow in a near black environment. It could be a technical HDR issue - the game has many small technical issues due to URE5 - but it could also be the somewhat timmid ray tracing effects used, which doesn't help and at first can't easily be identified as how or where they are used.
I do like losing some of the intense emotions from the trailer. James' is a bit more harder to read emotionally which is kinda perfect since he is a bit emotionally unavailable but still adding that bit of grief and pain hiding behind it.... making him a little more complex
The teaser is built from a work in progress, the cinematics now run in real time, James' modeling changed, making him less expressive and younger. more faithful to its original.
The first one has that look I notice in some Japanese based studios that gives me the impression that they have never seen a white person in real life , so they end up having white people with distinctly Japanese features . They really did a great job making him look more like a real person in the retail version .
I can't stress enough how glad I am that they fixed his face. You could see the guilt and anguish in every micro expression, which would've immediately given away that he did something fishy.
So the first face from the reveal trailer. That's the face of the actor who plays him Luke Roberts, right? I can't be the only one who sees this. The reason why he looks "older" in the reveal is that it's _literally_ a scan of the guys face. Which would totally make sense when it comes to mocaping him early in production. I'd imagine reading all these comments in his shoes would be pretty funny.
obivously left is more realistic, they made him full of botox in the retail, but i am not sure why fans think it looks better (because makes his emotions less apparent?) because he looks more like ps3 graphics now. I guess stupidity is the difinition for silent hill fans.
Oh man im playing this on kind of a low setup and had the graphics to high when i started the game, at the intro my fan just went complete jet mode during james's facial hair i genuinely thought bro's facial hair was gonna crash my game lol
Very glad they tweaked his expressions. The model doesn't look that different but emotions just felt over-the-top on his face. Something more subtle plays much better.
Overall i think it was a good choice to tone down his facial animations. Except the scream 0:55 , I like it more in the trailer, he looks more devastated and as if he lets out all the pain that he went through in the game up until this point. Or maybe its just the angle and hairphysics 😂😅
They made the right choice toning down the over the top emotional display of James. Actually it was by far one of my biggest concerns when I saw the trailer.
I agree with everyone, less constantly sad is good but I hate the loss of detail, I could tell the one on the left was better even before I pieced it together. Unfortunate
I don’t know. I’m glad they fixed his expression. He’s not really supposed to have an overly expressive face. My dislikes though, I don’t like the change in his hair. His hair looks kind of too perfect and nice now. Also, I wish they kept the overall dirty scruffy look he had. How his skin looked a little more oily and you could see more stubble. But that bathroom scene of James? They did that perfectly in the final product Everything else I guess you can write off as my personal gripes. James just doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that’s showered or even changed his clothes in about a week to me.
I don't know, him being so expressionless in some scenes works but sometimes it looks like he couldnt care less half the time. In the scene where Laura "dies" because of Pyramid Head, i think they should have used the trailer one, he should be screaming, he should be scared shitless.
the trailer makes him look more worn down and acholic but the in game honestly looks better from a distance and his more dead pan expression fits silent hill over all. I like the almost creepy expression of a dead body each person had since they are supposed to be dead after all.
The reveal trailer works for anyone who's played the original because you already know why James is showing the emotion he's showing, but the updated version stays in line with the original and keeps the secret and big reveal a mystery for first time Silent Hill players. The latter is better.
It's a great detail when James touches his face, he's going over the mouth too, almost like some kind of ritualistic gesture. He only touches his cheek in the trailer and he looks too damn miserable. Remember - James is not guilty and sad only, he's also angry. I think the acting in the remake endings (in water ending) is still too emotional. I'm replaying the original atm & the sounddesign is unbeatable. The remake is great as well but it lacks the grit and the camera perspectives/movement which made the original truly unique.
One is tailored for just the trailer so it's not even technically in-game and the other is made out of the finished product. So, they can add more detail to the earlier project.
James is in denial and is seemingly apathetic, having him show a SAD face was ridiculous and has no subtext. The retail version has him layered like he looked like he is just tired and done, like hes hiding something beneath the light when he couldnt see his eyes in the mirror after he washed his hands, having just... tested out new pillows.

I'm thankful they made the changes they did and took feedback well before release, the character redesigns all look incredible this game
Bro the scream scene is miles better in the trailer wtf why did they change it
Seems like they just de aged the actor who's in his late 40's.
James looks cold, indifferent and Detached from reality
Which makes sense since what he did just before this
They should've kept it the same for the elevator scene and the scream scene
the scream scene was the most memed upon scene. they had to change it. although i agree the cinematography looks way better in the trailer
I prefer the cinematic shots of the Reveal honestly and the way his hair moved in that one shot was perfect... Retail James is obviously better cause he looks like his age
Bloober did James right, he looks fantastic. My only nit-pick would be the hair physics and aliasing.
I'm glad the retail release reflects that now.
but he hasnt been living with guilt for a long time... he killed mary less than a week before SH2
So proud of Bloober Team right now!
they nailed it.
The sad face is so funny.
Too sad*
Now it's just right
The first scene is way better with nice details like the ring mark on finger and the fact that he can't look properly himself into the mirror
I do like losing some of the intense emotions from the trailer. James' is a bit more harder to read emotionally which is kinda perfect since he is a bit emotionally unavailable but still adding that bit of grief and pain hiding behind it.... making him a little more complex
omg I didn't realize how good they fix it.
ikr
Oh the face in the final product is also his. They may have dragged him a little
But have you played Death Stranding? 😂
This is nothing
После первого показа люди не верили, что это реальная графика, хотя я знал об этом уже тогда.
0:52 Harrison Ford DETECTED
obivously left is more realistic, they made him full of botox in the retail, but i am not sure why fans think it looks better (because makes his emotions less apparent?) because he looks more like ps3 graphics now. I guess stupidity is the difinition for silent hill fans.
0:58 if you pause imho is a bit downgrade on final build
The difference is sooo fucking crucial it’s beautiful
Oh man im playing this on kind of a low setup and had the graphics to high when i started the game, at the intro my fan just went complete jet mode during james's facial hair i genuinely thought bro's facial hair was gonna crash my game lol
You can actually see the retail james cutscene in the newest story and launch trailer.
Air brushed, beautified, no dirt, De-aged.
He looked like he was almost 60 in the reveal trailer. Thank God they fixed him
I agree with everyone, less constantly sad is good but I hate the loss of detail, I could tell the one on the left was better even before I pieced it together. Unfortunate
He looks like Shaggy from Scooby Doo in original
Good gravy Marie was James hideous on the left. So glad they changed his looks.
I like that they made him less emotional like the original but we did lose some of the grain effect which I liked
They did that perfectly in the final product
Everything else I guess you can write off as my personal gripes. James just doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that’s showered or even changed his clothes in about a week to me.
He is looking like THE OC main character
I don't know, him being so expressionless in some scenes works but sometimes it looks like he couldnt care less half the time. In the scene where Laura "dies" because of Pyramid Head, i think they should have used the trailer one, he should be screaming, he should be scared shitless.
Laura? You mean, Maria?
i kinda like the old one looking a bit sad but it's not great for someone's first walkthrough
Oh wow, as someone that hasn't liked how this game has looked, making him less emotional is an amazing call of Bloober's part. Damn.
Crazy improvement I will give em that.
the trailer makes him look more worn down and acholic but the in game honestly looks better from a distance and his more dead pan expression fits silent hill over all. I like the almost creepy expression of a dead body each person had since they are supposed to be dead after all.
Regardless of the changes both visuals are really good
The reveal trailer works for anyone who's played the original because you already know why James is showing the emotion he's showing, but the updated version stays in line with the original and keeps the secret and big reveal a mystery for first time Silent Hill players. The latter is better.
100% upgrade. The trailer's expressions were exaggerated, like a 12 year old drama queen..
Makin him less emotional is a better move, its really portrayed his inner struggle n difficult to express..
I like the older trailer look better
The retail version has him layered like he looked like he is just tired and done, like hes hiding something beneath the light when he couldnt see his eyes in the mirror after he washed his hands, having just... tested out new pillows.
las expresiones faciales y la reaccion del pelo a la luz se ven mejor en el trailer
They really screwed up the graphics just so consoles can run this game and what is even worse it's still not optimized.
bloober heard all of the complaints and locked in lol
I prefer the lighting in the reveal trailer where James screams and drops to his knees at the end
