  • Of all the Resident Evil games I had yet to play, Resident Evil 2 was the one I was looking forward to the most, with it being the original version of Resident Evil 2 from 2019. The Remake of Resident Evil 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, so I was very curious to see how I'd feel about the original game on Playstation 1, which is why we are here today. In this video, I will be reviewing RE2 on it's own, and then giving my thoughts on how RE2Make stacks up after having played the original.

The wasted potential for a new A/B scenario... For example, when Claire finds her brother's diary in the original game, a cutscene where Leon enters the STARS office occurs. A new "mixed" scenario would be something like the game making us play Leon after finishing reading the diary with Claire and go to the STARS office to actually start the cutscene or something.

As great as the remake is, it doesn't render the original obsolete at all. While the remake arguably improves on most aspects, the original still does some things better, particularly the A and B scenarios.

Agreed, it's the major edge I give Original RE2 over RE2 Remake. I do prefer RE2 remake for the better structured story, gameplay, character's and "MR.X", But it's the only RE that I enjoy playing BOTH versions often side by side (I only ever played RE1 Original once to beat it as Chris and Jill and never touched it again, preferring to play RE1 Remake whenever I replay the first game; And RE 3 to it's remake........yeah Original RE3 all the way, I like playing RE3 Remake for sure once my disappointment with it faded, seriously overhype fucking SUCKS! I only got overhyped because I'll tell you, I bought RE2 Remake on sale during a Halloween sale....the year before the lockdown, and enjoyed the hell out of it that when RE3 remake was being promoted, I bought RE3 on my PS3 to play and beat it then bought RE3R digital when it first came out.....and I felt like I payed way more then I did! RE2 Remake I would have bought it at full price no sale on day 1 if I could have....I limit how many new games a year I buy with those I don't having to wait till a sale and a good moment in my finances allow me to buy them later...but I would have bought it on release if I didn't have another game at the time that filled up the limit I mentioned I could buy! But RE3 was not priced right for what I got...I felt like the stupid Multiplayer attached to it was what jacked up the price honestly! If it was I would have loved to JUST PURCHESE RE3 Remake ONLY for less then what I paid for! I did it with RE1 Remake on the switch as while I don't murderously hate RE0, it like Code Veronica was a one time playthrough back on the Wii/PS3 respectfully and I have no interest in replaying them ever again! hence I'd rather pay less for RE1 Remake ONLY!)
RE 2 is considered the best of the series as far as I'm concern with RE4 being a close second (enjoyed it and enjoyed the changes, alongside it being what got me INTO the series in general as I was a scardy cat for Horror growing up and RE was no different when my dad bought RE1 Original on the 3DO...tried it once then never got past the First Zombie with Jill cause I wussed out after that cutscene, and as Chris, I ran around like an idiot not knowing what I was doing and quit when I ran into Rebecca in the chemical Save Room because I lost my heart again! Never touched it again and only saw RE2 and RE3 at my cousins till RE4 on the Wii which I bought on a whim to overcome my fear! RE1 was when I was 13 and I got RE4 when I was around my mid 20's I believe, I never overcome my fear of the dark unknown till I was 20 and still thought a Xenomorph would get me if I left my closet open at night till I was 21! Now I eat horror and horror games for breakfast thanks to RE4 getting me to give them a chance! Happy my PS3 let me get the RE games I couldn't find again like RE1 Original to RE 2, RE3 and CV.....RE5 was a massive disappointment to me as you can guess because I'm not a fan of the multiplayer they were forcing into the series! I was okay with it in Multiplayer games like Mercenary mode, but not the single player! RE5 was fun to play with GOOD Rando's with Mics for the sake of commentary, but I never play it single player because the thing I like about RE6 Single Player, my partner can't DIE! SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE SAME WITH RE5 SINGLE PLAYER!!!) I just find myself missing the old style of Survival Horror games from classic RE1-3 (though at least RE2 Remake showed how RE4 CAN AND ALREADY SHOWED it can still work like the classics if done right)

Missing A and B scenarios in the remake do not only cause a lack of replayability.
It causes much much bigger problems.
Not having actually different campaigns anymore makes it absolutely impossible to tell a consistent canon story because Leons and Claire's games are now conflicting instead of complementing.
Making campaigns like such alternate timelines is absolutely inappropriate and dysfunctional for ANY game about different characters experiencing different things but being part of one and the same overall events.
I still have no clue how in gods name Capcom could make this game being working like that.
And I have no clue how people can even be happy with what we got here...

      @paulman34340 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@pretenderxxx2385 It's called "taking what you can get!" Yeah they COULD have fixed this issue before releasing the game, but the only reason we know about the Missing A and B is BECAUSE those before bought the game before word of mouth so not getting them doesn't effect the rest of the game much (Games still solid, so really you can say they only fucked up the B scenario and I can see ALOT of things they could have done to fix things! Such as blocking off parts of the RPD and making them into their own section to avoid major interactions between Leon and Claire, hell they could alter where you interact with the secondary characters! Pretty much try to avoid it just being a slightly altered A scenario. And for the Final G, an emergency protocol in case Players get to that Fight with their B scenario character with little ammo to avoid a no win scenario! They made it too fucking Bullet Spongey, Cause I got to that fight as Claire with alot of ammo for all my weapons, ESPECIALLY the Gatling Gun, Yet I suffered my first game over in the B scenario with her to Final G cause I ran out of everything and had no way to attack other then my pistol with no indication I was DOING ANYTHING! My second attempt was only victory and BARELY because I started out with Magnum rounds first before the gatling gun and almost thought I was going to see another game over when the cutscene played)
Of course in a way this likely attributed to why they REALLY got lazy and Content Cutting with RE3 Remake (An Okay Game, but if your like me and got it on day 1 overhyping yourself, well it took me TWO YEARS after beating it the first time to go back to it on Hardcore and Nightmare because I had a sense of fun....but my disappointment with what was cut out since I played Original RE3 made me feel listless playing RE3 Remake that any good fun was usually ignored for that disappointment! It's how they handled Nemesis really! I know at times he does fuck off in the Original, but with the new engine their was no need to limit his appearance like they did and turn him into WHATEVER THE FUCK HE TURNED INTO after the train!) Seriously what they did with the A and B in RE2 Remake PALES compared to what they did with RE3 Remake (I ended up not buying Village because of my doubts with Capcom at that point......and because it took me a bit longer to secure a PS5 LOL)

Almost all enemies are zombies. That is one. The enemies are MOOONSTERS WITH SPECIAL POWERS not sick and pathetic creatures living on borrowed time. T virus creatures should not be "overpowered" like the G virus monster.
The dialogue is similar to an average hollywood script. It is so edgy and cynical at times it bores me.
"HOLD YOUR FIRE I AM A HUMAN" > "fuck... " or "WTF".
Claires voice actress is acting too much like a californian cartoon character. The enforced romances always harm the story.
Scenario B lacks impact and a lot out of it was cut out. A lot was cut out and what we got back are generic sewer and sci fi settings wich feel very off.
The music was very quiet and generic. The original was 100% atmosphere.
I said it was flawed, the original resident evil 2 also has flaws. All games do. I remember the original more fondly because I AM ONE OF THOSE REPORTER TYPES, ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A SCOOP.

RE2 has become one of those comfort games for me I just vibe with so hard ^^ Everything from the satisfying exploration/management/gameplay loop, the music, the characters, the character designs, settings, I just love.
It's such a unique case for a video game remake where the remake is so god damn well made and fantastic as a game on its own - even doing a lot to improve on the original. But still goes worth mentioning how much lost potential there was when compared to the original. Especially for me, who has that passion for the original game, and seeing how much RE1 remake did for its source material.

I figured I was the only one who felt disappointed in how Leon and Claire's Stories were no longer intertwined, and that the didn't really do much in the way of building a friendship between them. I mean, if they were meant to intertwine, Annette would have had to die in front of Sherry, come back to life, then help Leon, then shoot Ada and finally die again.

One of my gripes about the RE2 remake is they really half-assed the "second run", there is no true B scenario, and no zapping system. The OG RE2 had much better pacing, and the unfolding of the story. I love how in the original you don't even see Mr. X until the B scenario. When I encountered him for the first time it was such an unexpected shock! Plus in the B scenario you have different boss fights. In the remake, for the most part you have the same boss fights in the second run. The only thing that stood out was the new Mr. X final form battle at the end. When I played the second run, I was majorly let down. It was great how in the original they saved a lot of stuff for the B scenario exclusively, it really helps it feel like you're playing two different games. I love the RE2 remake, but there's still plenty I prefer about the original over the remake. The pacing was just perfect, and to me it's magic that seems hard to capture nowadays with modern games.

Do kind in mind, people (such as myself) were waiting for RE2make since REmake was released on Gamecube. And we were certain that we would get it.... we didn't know at the time we would have to wait 15+ years... we thought maybe 2-3 years. With that being said, I still love the original more since that was my game. I thought RE2make was fantastic, but it was disappointing that they basically removed RE2's gimmick of zapping/A and B. And the fact that they removed pretty much all interaction with Claire and Leon with each other. The one other thing I disliked was new Irons. I thought the original did it better. This was compounded with the removal of an iconic line, which was strange since they kept in the iconic moment from the FMV when you open the door and Leon points his gun and says get down. What I'm referring to with Irons is this moment (if one is old enough to remember) that was in ALL the marketing for the original RE2. It was in all the commercials etc. "Everyone's gonna die.." I remember hearing it so many times, its tattooed on my brain. But nope.. they didn't have it. Side note, his death in the original was far better. The remake made it look like a joke. The spawn bursting out and ripping him open from his stomach to his shoulder was awesome.

They made Irons completely balls to the wall insane for no reason, in the og he was crazy sure but he was also still believable. He felt overly evil because "he's a badguy". Annette basically has the same issues, she has like zero character in the remake, in the original you can tell she cared about William and Sherry, in the remake she sounds like she just doesn't even give two shits about Sherry.

Why on earth anyone would think locking items you picked up on B scenarios is a good idea when you have to literally deal with the exact same zombies and locked doors is beyond me. The characters with the remake are a lot worse than in the original. Irons in the original was more charismatic he seems off but given the situation also "failing to protect the mayors daughter" you can understand at least through the eyes of the main characters, he sounds more distraught. But even through that he still came of as polite and calm, it's good that he is like that cause that's how he made it to be chief of police. In the remake he came off as crazy, quickly threatening them with a gun which makes no sense. No charm or charisma, when Claire said "he's the chief of police?" I was just as surprised as her, that's not Irons in anyway. If he was looking for the pendant, since he is crazy in the remake why not just hold them at gunpoint and ask for the pendant. If sherry declines then just say that he will shoot Claire or something instead of dragging Sherry to the orphanage. Which is more dangerous since you would have to go outside where it's dangerous. You have potential zombies or whatever to take care of while dragging a uncooperative girl and he's using a revolver so he only has so many shots. One thing that doesn't make sense in the remake is that Irons is the one that trapped Ben in the prison area but that's just dumb, if he wanted to kill Ben he would have let him free since there are zombies and other monsters around the station that would kill him. Or just shoot him and then if someone said anything he could have claimed Ben was a zombie. In the original Ben locked himself in the cell in order to protect himself from the monsters.
Annette Birkin is one of the most destroyed characters in the remake, in the original while still a workaholic she still loved both William and Sherry since in the original when William is shot she is horrified and quickly tries to look for help, with Sherry she told her to go to the police station cause she said it was safer there. She always did think of her even if she didn't spend a lot of time with her. You can tell in the original that she does love her very much since when Claire (someone she doesn't know) tells her that Sherry is in the sewers she drops everything to look for her especially to find her before William does. She wrote down the instructions to create the vaccine for Sherry. Another part that shows her love for her husband is when she gets mad at Claire for "killing" him. Even as a monster all she saw was William which is why she dropped her guard and is very protective of the G-virus since it's very important to her husband it's also very important to her.
In the remake she doesn't really care for William or Sherry telling Claire that she and William were "more married to their work" and ignoring Claire just to "observe " his transformation and the most egregious thing she did was what she did to Sherry in the sewers. Her daughter is alone and scared in the sewers and she dared to tell her daughter that she "didn't have time for that" and proceed to shut off the camera, she didn't tell her to stay put that she will go to her. If it was the old Annette she would have come running towards her.
With gameplay having Mr.X following you around is more annoying since he makes you have to wait to pass by so you can be on your way. There are right way and wrong ways of doing that. the original Nemesis was a good example of having a enemy follow you the right way, Mr.X in the original is fine as well since the times she shows up he does corner you in cramped spaces. in the remake everytime you hear his footsteps you will more likely go "ughh" since you have to wait. He feels more like a pesky fly.

Having played RE2 when it came out, I was really looking forward to the remake, though I found myself very disappointed with it. I feel somewhat validated in that you touched upon most o the criticisms I had of it which most people seemed to have overlooked in the hype surrounding it at release. It does make a lot of sense that the A/B scenarios were crammed in at the last minute, which explains why Mr X was in both scenarios. I was surprised when he turned up in the A scenario which I initially thought was great and I assumed they'd have something new in the B scenario to mix things up further, so that was a huge let-down. That and the complete disconnection between the A/B runs where there was no choices you made that effected the second run.
While I enjoyed RE2make as a fun game, I thought it was a terrible remake, which is a real shame. Clunky though the original is, it remains my favourite of the two versions.

The Dreamcast port has an exclusive Nightmare difficulty mode, and the SourceNext PC port has a lot of mods out there for it. As much as I like RE2 remake, the original is still my favorite game of all time.

Both on ps1 and both are different from one another gameplay wise but both really good. Remake had incredible graphics, scenery, and gameplay, but it just felt... incomplete. The A/B system had corners cut, certain enemy types were removed, a couple weapons absent, some scenes scrapped, a few locations gone. Extreme Battle ditched too. They removed one of my favourite scenes with Leon meeting Claire in the Stars room. Their relationship was mostly expressed through letters which was lazy, imo. However I really liked the Orphanage, but they should have made it scarier.

The original Resident Evil 2 is a survival horror masterpiece
That being said, even as an enormous fan of the franchise I vastly prefer the remake
There are some shortcomings, the A&B scenario isn't quite as fleshed out as the original, and there ends up being story inconsistencies
But the gameplay, the atmosphere, and presentation is just so much better that it makes it much more enjoyable for me to replay
It was easily my game of the year that year, and I heard so many people saying nonsense like a remake shouldn't be eligible for that award and I couldn't disagree more
It's not just a remaster with some higher resolution, it is a completely new and different game built from the ground up

I am kinda bummed about RE3 remake because I felt it was too short, and it seems I'm missing out if I don't play the original. But I just beat RE4 for the first time and I'm excited to play the remake in the near future.

Yeah that's the problem, you played the remake first and THEN compared it to the original, most people who played the original first said otherwise, re2 remake is flawed, disappointing b scenario and no difference at all from switching scenarios, little to no interaction between Leon and Claire, cut content and rushed bosses, and ben was half assed, yeah Mr x is better and final boss was good but it really doesn't make up for the thing it lost from the original, you compare the original to the copy, not the copy to the original

  • @gasparguruoftime5475
    @gasparguruoftime5475 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Remake is a much rougher comparison when you compare it as a remake. However, it offers so much that OG doesn’t that it’s impossible for me to be too upset.
It may lack proper B Scenarios, the zapping system and cohesion between Leon and Claire’s stories, but it retains (and improves) the inventory management, level design and “crit path” satisfaction, so in that sense it does feel like a faithful remake. It’s also actually scary, which is something I’m not sure the original game does a very good job at, even when viewing it through the lens of releasing way back in 1998.
If I was forced to choose one, I’d pick the original because it’s so chill to play through and well paced, and it’s also the original so Remake wouldn’t even exist without it. But like, man it’s close. Both are in my top 25 favorite games.

For me, the Re2make is almost a perfect game. The things they left out were a bit unforgivable for me though, like the spiders and the factory/warehouse section. I'll never forget my first playthrough of the original in 1998, when you finally make it out of the sewers you ascend through the factory and warehouse portions which were only a few scenes but when you reach the surface, you get a brief break when the track "Marshalling Yards" plays and it still haunts me to this day. It gave a feeling of ghostly loneliness that I haven't experienced in a horror game since. It's a masterpiece and I'll always treasure it.

Its pretty clear from others how much RE2 was such a success but I’d be lying if I didn’t say this wasn’t my favourite entry by far. Even more so than RE4 which is the fan favourite. RE2 just screams iconic and it gave way for some of the best scares and moments I’ve ever experienced in a video game making it one of my favourite horror games of all time. Personally, I do love the original and the remake equally in the same regard as something like Final Fantasy 7 and I don’t necessarily have a preference of the two since they’re so fun and enjoyable. I make it a habit to return to both games every October and because of RE2’s success… its why I’m so happy it got into Dead By Daylight. And its all the more reason why I hate Welcome To Raccoon City.
Otherwise great review like always J. Always a pleasure to wake up to a very thoughtful analysis on one of my favourite horror games :)

Honestly I get that decision. Mercenaries mode was done to death. RE3, RE4, RE5, Mercenaries 3D, RE6. It had it's run, and Capcom wants to try something new.

@@rickylewis1451 But it wouldn't have been faithful to the first version of Mercenaries. It likely would have been a half assed version, given the game itself was half assed in the first place.
A remaster of Mercenaries 3D but with RE6 mercenaries mechanics would be the smartest option for anything Mercenaries in the future. Especially if they brought back ALL the playable characters from every game's story, instead of the usual 6 costumes for each character as roster filler.
