Great info, but be very careful if you are planning international travel as lines may be taken off you, or, as happened to me, I went back through customs and immigration in Australia and got a bag and checked my reels in. A customs official seriously suggested I just discard my lines!
Never had a problem but you never know.
Fine suggestions for the angler who will check a larger bag. I do a lot of quick trips so I skip the checked bag and need a lot more cubic inches for my carryon bag. With a traditional carry on duffel bag plus a personal item pack, I am trying to figure out if I can sneak the usual 30 inch tube for a 4 piece rod strapped to my personal item pack.... thus avoiding an 8 piece rod. At 8-10 inches too long I wonder who will play "bad cop" on me. Your big carryon bag is suppose to be up to 22 inches long. The small pack is suppose to be up to around 19 inches. Who leads off base with a 30 inch tube and gets away with it? By the way, my answer to a waterproof pack is a couple of light weight dry bags. They are cheap and functional.

So are you saying that this 35L Simms backpack qualifies as a personal item that will fit under the seat? I plan to use it, if I buy it with it virutally empty but with my personal itmes and a few clothing itmes. Plan to use the the backpack as my personal itme and Fishpound reel travel case as the case that goes in the overhead bid. Does that sound like the arilines will allow this???? Are you sure?

Yup, store the rod and reel case over head and put the backpack between your legs, for quick snack access. 🤙

The only issue with carrying on a rod case like those is they don’t fit well in the overhead compartment. You’ll be that guy that takes up all the space in the overhead with an ill fitting case. They do fit under the seat but it takes up the entire length of the floor under you. If you don’t have a window seat then you run the risk of it getting stepped on if your neighbor needs to get up. Unless I know I’m sitting in first class I don’t bring my rod case ( I have the Orvis Safe Passage Carryall).
We typically put them in the Attendant "Closet" in the front of the plane. If you ask nicely, it's usually not a problem. We carry these on all the time as do many folks who travel with us.

I would be very careful trying to take a fly reel with line on it onto a plane. I have heard that the line tends to get flagged and you do not want to lose your $50-100 fly line......Also thank you for being honest about brands and quality, a lot of brands like to make it sound like their gear is the best even when it is not. Great Video!
Texas River Legends I have traveled throughout the US with my reels with line on them in my carry on and have never had a problem. I was afraid of taking aluminum rod tubes on as a carry on also but never had an issue. As for hooks I never had an issue either.
Additional note: I only fly on Delta and had no issues, I can’t speak for what other airlines might do.

Once in Dominican Republic, where I was not allowed to go back out and put the reels in my hold luggage, so had to unspool more than a mile of mono, braid and fly lines, then chuck it away"
This is a problem i could see happening. i also had my suitcase stolen at the airport when i arrived once so im not sure what is best :( maybe having 1 rod and reel in hand luggage and 1rod and reel in the suitcase.

Went to Cabo San Lucas from Vancouver Canada this winter.I took my look alike fishpond carry on bag and got it on Canadian plane carry on.Coming back different story Mexican immagration no way had to go checked allso one other guy from usa got refused so be warned.
