    *Pro tip* don’t let the airlines bully you into thinking you need to pay for “additional bags” even when your fly rods are most likely excluded from that policy. If they give you a real hard time, strap them to the side of your carry on. If they’re being extra fun that day, pay the fee, and complain immediately upon landing to someone who isn’t an idiot. 👍🏼

    My advice: if at all possible, drive and enjoy the scenery, freedom, and more control over the trip. All flying provides is the advantage of speed. Other than that, a commercial jet is just two flying porta potties with a large, overcrowded waiting area.

    Rule #1 at the airport or on the plane: be nice to everyone and don't ever be a dick.

      @@Thespanglerangler 100% of the issues I've seen traveling were caused by travelers being dicks (or just being idiots). Not TSA.

    life hack to avoid dumb questions: get those rod reel gear carryall things. don't put stickers on it. most people assume its a bassoon or some other boring nonsense.

    Sometimes I carry two rod tubes on either side of my Orvis backpack carry on. Just for attention.

  • @futuremainiac6351

    I never pack my rods. They've been "lost" too many times. Got a square carrier that'll hold 4 4-piece rods and a backpack for my reels. I figure no one will pilfer my flies and pliers.

  • @mikekuczynski1552
    @mikekuczynski1552 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good advice. I’m an early packer I pack a week before I go and then the day before I leave I can’t remember what I packed so I unpack it all see what I missed then repack it . Only thing I would add is if your traveling with family ( like my wife ) I split all our stuff up half and half in each bag so if they loose one bag you still have half your stuff until the rest catches up to you . Stay Hugh and thanks for sharing.

    Print out a copy of the TSA rules (or have it ready and pulled up on your phone) if you are carrying something that may be questionable. It won't work every time, but it may help.

    • @ronbegnaud8520
      @ronbegnaud8520 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ultimately a lot is left to the description of the TSA agent you are dealing with. Pulling out printed rules and telling someone how to do their job isn’t a great way to endear people. I’m surprised you haven’t been cavity searched. Although you would probably enjoy it. Oh and Suck it Corey

  • @KuhChuck
    @KuhChuck ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Scariest part for carry-on is all TSA rules are at the discretion of the agent. I've heard horror stories of people having to strip off fly lines and backing and chuck it. For me, as much as possible is checked. Pack wisely...and hope for the best. If you go with a friend or spouse, split your gear between two bags. Its unlikely the airline will lose both bags.

    • @fluxcapacitor05
      @fluxcapacitor05 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm one of them. Called ahead to the airline days and weeks in advance to be extra positive that I was doing everything correctly. Must have talked to a dozen or so different people -- all who corroborated the same things. I just wanted to know if it was ok to tape a 4pc rod tube to my luggage. Travel day comes, I get to the airport, walk to the counter and the first thing the guy says is "that's protruding". Thankfully my fam was still waiting for me to leave but I had to travel without a rod that trip. I've never been so close to punching someone in the face without actually punching them in the face ever in my life.

    I live in a resort town too, dude. The struggle is real. It used to just be summer, but now it’s year round. During the Covid madness all the Californians bought up all the houses, now down town is literally 65% airBnbs. Talk about disrespecting the locals.

    Good tips. Alaska recently made me check a rod flying home from Hawaii. Of course they lost it. Added two hours to the end of our trip. They eventually found it and Fedex'd it to me. Lesson learned was don't fly with your favorite/best rods, which it wasn't, but I would have stressed a lot more if it was.

    Speaking of rod tubes...early '90s Alaska trip...excellent storage for all the cool fireworks you could get there, unavailable in Oregon. Pre-911, those were the days... I've matured slightly since then.

    I've always just put my two rod tubes diagonally in my main luggage. I wish they wouldn't make all rod tubes 31+ inches. The 30 -inch rod tubes fit luggage way better. The multi-rod tubes are all north of 33 inches for some reason. Don't stand up when the plane lands!

    Hooks depends on size. Small hooks ok. Big hooks bad. lol. If you’re trout fishing your fine. If they take your trout hooks because they are too big I need to know where you are trout fishing. Stay huge.

    Good tips. I think you might be missing the key point of tenkara fishing. If you're going to be forced to go with your wife on her business trip to somewhere that sucks, bring the tenkara so you can at least walk to the closest garbage creek and trick some gills with one hand and have a beer in the other. It's basic multitasking. It's like ice fishing with open water. They pack small and are easy to hide when your hopping fences. Just a note. Keep up the hilarious videos.

    • @HugeFlyFisherman
      @HugeFlyFisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I can assure it’s not me that’s missing the point. A reel does not prevent me from holding a beer in the other hand, but it does allow me to do all sorts of things that a cane pole can’t do.
      I’ll reserve judgement on your wife forcing you to go on business trips, because your decision making is clearly flawed.

    • @Stickinit
      @Stickinit ปีที่แล้ว

      @Huge Fly Fisherman I completely agree . "Reel" fishing is much more diverse and I don't care what set up anyone is using I fish for fish. The man bun purest from Boulder who preach the fishing yoga crap can suck it. As far as my wife... follow the money and say yes dear. Have a great late winter and spring season in Colorado. I can't wait until my local spots thaw up a bit. Keep up the funny stuff.
