    Rolling towards the enemy is a great tip for beginners. And generally speaking, the bigger and more terrifying the enemy, the more you want to be right up in their face.

    Something to add: STOP LIGHT SPAMMING/RULE OF 2's and use the right weapon.
    Just because there's a gap in the enemy offensive doesn't mean you should furiously mash light attack (especially for bosses) hit them twice and see what they do. Not only will you avoid a possible counter attack but you'll have the stamina to react when you wouldn't because you were light spamming.
    Use the right weapon:
    Some Bosses have very low opportunities for you to counter attack as they will furiously keep attacking and most of their "cooldown" time is non-existent. If you're using a colossal weapon, you'll have few opportunities to get hits in as larger weapons have longer start up animation. Using lighter weapons will counteract this. Also using swinging weapons in narrow areas is problematic. In those scenarios, use thrust/overhead attacks.

    You missed the most important and useful tip… pick your battles. You dont need to fight every enemy, you dont need to win every fight. If you are struggling with an enemy, come back later when you have better gear and stats. Also, if you go into an area and its taking a lot longer to kill an enemy then you are in the wrong place and should go elsewhere and explore. For example after stormveil castle you should be going west rather than east.

      @@Tcrror Don't worry about it! +3 is not that high to be exploring Stormveil, I think my weapon may have been +6 by then, and even so some of it gave me trouble... Go and explore Limgrave & The Weeping Peninsula - there's a lot to find there, and by the time you come back to Stormveil you and your weapon should both be higher level. :)
      Interesting you say about anxiety - when I played Dark Souls, I used to get that going into new areas, or getting to a new boss. I found everything intimidating and stressful (why did I stick with it, lol). Now there is none of that - sure there is adrenallin in difficult fights, but I no longer get the anxiety going into new areas or coming up to tough bosses. The fear of death has been beaten out of me, haha. Stick with it and I'm sure Elden Ring will do the same for you.

    Something I found helps me is to not roll but use the back step. It puts pretty good distance between you and the enemy.

  • @Zinras
    @Zinras 2 ปีที่แล้ว +123

    Regarding lock-on as a caster: You can play unlocked, start casting your spell in any random direction and lock on just before you fire (exact timing varies with spell). This allows you to maximize your mobility and minimize the risk of getting caught in certain attacks. As a caster, the main danger of lock-on is that you're forced to maintain distance if you don't use blade spells and thus you often have to roll backwards a lot - which is bad because you can't see what you're doing and it triggers roll-catching attacks from the AI. This also works wonders on horseback because you can just start charging whenever you want to and lock on for a very short moment.

    • @user-jt6ns8wf9q
      @user-jt6ns8wf9q 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From a non caster pov, most people feel like they're trash and just working off of broken TH-cam builds with no skill put into it, as most are, and I normalize ganking them in my fight clubs.

    • @remotepinecone
      @remotepinecone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's very inconsistent and annoying.
      I've noticed certain spells like flame sling actually go further and will hit the target better if you don't lock on. While other spells almost require lock-on to work at all. what makes it even worse is it doesn't tell you if you're out of range.

      tip for casters: have a weapon in your main hand, with staff in off hand. make sure main hand weapon has bloodhound step ash of war on it with magic, sacred, flame art, or cold infusion(depends if youre a faith based caster or a sorcerer). now you have the ultimate mobility to create distance so you can cast more comfortably, if an enemy likes getting up in your face.

    My main tip is against the bosses especially the main ones you have to change your tactics up and can’t spam the same moves over and over agin. The enemy AI is very good and it reads your patterns and adapts Margit is the best example of this you can get him half way down with 1 move but once he learns you will not be able to hit him with that same move once in the second half of the fight . I tried only using a jumping heavy to kill him and easily got him halfway but didn’t land one out of the next 50 or 100 tries

    Vigor was something I realized almost immediately. The built-in attribute explanations are very useful. Once I understood attribute scaling, I mostly focused on Vigor until I got a weapon that scaled well enough for the attribute bonus to be worthwhile. I learned to roll into enemies pretty quickly too. Unless I'm trying to fall back to heal, I almost always roll into enemies.
    Enemies that have two different weapons might also have a side that is more vulnerable. The tree sentinel, for example; you would think his shield keeps that side protected, but most attacks on foot will hit him beneath the shield, so it's usually better to attack him from there where the halberd can't reach you as well.

    I watched your part 2 of the mage's guide and you mentioned that the +5 strength that you get from that one talisman is basically worthless for us but if you get to 16 strength and use the brass shield, then upgrade it and use the barricade shield skill you can block everything and everyone while keeping your stamina intact, pair it with a weapon capable of attacking while blocking, the perfect example for that would be the rapier that you get from an npc in the roundtable hold, which also comes with a skill that allows it to get scaling from int and the phalanx spell without using a slot for it. Then you can use said slot for the scholar's shield for even better blocking capabilities. It's not Dark Souls. Just pointing out that while there are similar mechanics it isn't Dark Souls. I've had this conversation before with a friend. The game is literally called Elden Ring. There are some major differences to these games which do impact gameplay (tell me you aren't so dim to not know the differences). Different topic this will become which I'm not going to comment on anything regarding this. Facts are facts, and you are entitled to a limited view opinion.
      "Don't like it then like play something else." That sentiment is completely true imo. I will clear the misconception - I like the game, but this game could have been far better. Again, not being Dark Souls, the developers could have pushed to improve upon the game, but failed to do so. I'm not alone in thinking certain design choices could have made for a better game, and many of those choices could have been ignored by stuck up individuals like yourself, and those who just simply don't want to use those aspects. There is ZERO loss for make implementations to allow people to play the games the way they would like so long as all who are playing together are fine with it. My statement for being stuck up being accurate from your comment : "So you like for someone to wipe your ass for you?".
      The mentality " I am good at game, so everyone else get on my level, the game is fine the way it is" is so bad for the gaming community as a whole. I'm saying it politely, but everyone knows this isn't how people push that statement across (just as you have). Your way is not the only way a game can be played.
      While developers don't have to make a game so they can actually make more money and please a bigger crowd, it certainly wouldn't hurt them to to make the game with optional styles of play.
      As for co-op, it goes hand in hand with open world nicely, just not the way it was implement for Elden Ring. It was a missed opportunity for an awesome game mode.
      Also to clear a misconception, I've soloed Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, The Old Hunters DLC, two difficulty levels of Nioh above the easiest one, and this all without summoning help from anyone. (Demon's Souls I actually had to play offline because the online feature was no longer active). I've been soloing Elden Ring just fine atm without assistance. Am I l33t enough for you?
      Yeah I lowered myself to your level for moment to just make a point how dumb this thought process is.

    • @Kindlesmith70
      @Kindlesmith70 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lawless7859 I'm not even sure what "So you like for someone to wipe your ass for you?" what's even meant to entail. Have you never wanted to play a game with friends just to play with friends? Maybe you don't have friends, a very wild assumption. It would make perfect sense for your thought process.
      "DS games have never been meant for that."
      So what? Can I point out the thousands mods that exist for the hundreds of games, that change the games in ways the games weren't built to be. While not official, without these mods, some games would never be as popular as they are. Proof that a developer's design choice is not always the best choice. Some devs will provide ways within their own games ways to customize the experience of their game, and these devs are amazing for understanding what it means to make a fun game, "fun" not being the same for everyone.
      So basically you are saying FromSoft are a bunch of stubborn arseholes, or are very sheltered people to not understand this very basic principle.
      Well, considering none of the games have actually evolved from early design I am pretty much inclined to agree with you. The games do carry over a lot of problems, and just have added more with Elden Ring. If you don't see them, that is ok. As long as you and your l33t ilk are having fun. Pretty much the sentiment.

    I like your idea of rolling towards the enemy. With me I was dying a lot, so what I did was get that one skill that allows you to basically blink or dash. After that it became so easy to get out of the way. So now I'm a dancing mage lol. I use the barricade shield and have the ashe that lets me blink or dash on my Ugikatana. Usually I use my sceptor but when I know I'm going mele I switch quickly. I'm not sure if I could switch the sceptor to the other hand and cast magic on my sword and blink as well.

    Bonus tip: most enemies can hurt each other, like trolls or halberd/bow golems. Get them grouped up and chasing/attacking you like a train in CoD zombies, and they’ll wreck each other for some very easy kills against high health/damage enemies. Then, the last one standing should be pretty hurt and easy to finish off.
    Particularly, for the two halberd golems on the bridge in Stormveil with an archer at the back, the archer can drop them if you hide behind the halberd golems and allow you to get some really easy critical hits.

    That's what I also noticed when dodging. Sometimes dodging forward from an incoming attack is safer because you're are out of reach from their hitbox.
    I just noticed it when im fighting this huge Yogi Bear. Most of his attacks can't reach me due to his wide swings. Then i tried it to some enemies it has the same outcome, mostly they can't hit me.

    Great tips. Vigor is important. The bosses in this game move so fast and reach so far without over 900HP can easily get one shotted.
    I also found open field bosses, not closed arena bosses, have operating area. This means you can wear them down using Radahn's greatbow. It deals quite high damage when upgraded. The ammunition can be bought from finger reader in roundtable. 800 runes a piece of great-arrow seems a lot but if you farm at Mohgwyn Mausoleum it's just a few minutes to get 100 arrows worth of great arrows.

    this is my first fromsoftware game and what really frustrate me is the amount of panic roll I'm doing. I finished witcher 3 and so I have the idea what a boss/mob fight looks like (ngl much easier compared to elden ring) but the timings really throw me off. The enemies in elden ring tends to be slower, like they would start an animation that takes about 2 seconds before the actual hit, unfortunately my instincts tell me that I should dodge roll or jump as soon as I see them do an attack animation, leaving me exposed when the actual hit happens.

    The horse weapon tip was great, I genuinely didn't know that. The thing you missed was having a dedicated horse weapon that has reach and swings vertically. Spears tend to poke down and most swords have sucky reach. Nothing worse than having to spend an age fighting a Night Cavalry because you keep killing the horse and missing him entirely. Weapons that swing down with good length will usually hit him and the horse meaning you'll have a lot less hassle if you're not great on the horse and haven't figured out your dodges, blocks and parries when he's down.

      Same. In most other games rolling is a good way to make a lot of distance quickly, and even though almost every game with rolls has s, i always use it for the distance. But rolls in elden ring seem slower than running, so you HAVE to rely on the s, and i can't really get used to that.

    From my experience, using the s trick with Torrent works amazing if you use it to get right up within a bosses weak point but are constantly being thwarted by attacks. Dismount Torrent then immediately do the strongest attack you can, then go back to Torrent and use strike and retreat tactics. This works for certain bosses very very well.

    One thing i've noticed that if you can't roll towards an enemy, try rolling to the side instead. This dosen't work agaisnt all foes, but it's good against enemies with spears or long, thin hitboxes. Hell, some enemies might have an angle to their sweep attack thier swings which you use as a blind spot.

    I never thought about using dismount as a roll alternative. I knew it had I-frames, but the speed and verticality of jump was usually enough. There are some I-frames on mounting too, which is great to know when you forget the former and get forcibly dismounted.
    The question is, how does the moving dismount compare to the standing dismount in I-frames? Torrent is way too finnicky to try to come to a full stop just to use the standing dismount.

The one mistake I often make is mixing up unlock and unsneak when in a panic (ie. fuck it didn't die yet and it's coming at me fast). Holy damage is weak against almost the entire roster of the mandatory Bosses, because most of them are considered demi-gods. Holy is great for 90% the side stuff, but weak to the main storyline. I wouldn't recommend building holy damage until your second playthrough for this reason.
