$7.41 Extreme Auction Flip Makeover - This top was SO damaged |

  • I won this buffet at auction for $7.41. I forgot I even bid on it until I got the notification that I won. Well, the joke was on me, because the top had major damage from melted candle wax.
    I tried to re-veneer it, but I must not have used the correct glue or I didn’t apply the glue correctly because I had some pockets that didn’t adhere. I took it all off and decided to fill it in and paint over it.
    That was not fun because it was difficult to get a completely smooth surface. I used several products, but the last one was my favorite and really smoothed everything out.
    Wow, what a beast, but now it’s a beauty!

    I use rubber cement to glue the veneer. In a well ventilated space, apply cement to both furniture surface and veneer back. Let both dry thoroughly. Space out long, thin dowel rods on surface. Align veneer on top. Working from the center, pull the middle rod out and smooth outward. Remove rods, one at a time, and smooth as you go. Once down, it will not come off! So make sure you are lined up!!! This method never fails me. You talked about the veneer lifting. I've never had that to happen with rubber cement.

    Hi! Great job! One tip for doing veneer sheets. When you’re done ironing (you can iron directly on like a 4-5 setting so mid setting) take a wet cloth or sponge and wipe it down this will show you the spots that didn’t glue down all the way 🫶🏼 then iron those out! But great job! Super helpful to watch you do this!!

    • @garbagechan
      @garbagechan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      came here to post this, its normal to not get all the glue set on the first go when doing it like this, you'll want to wipe it down with water and check for your lifted spots and iron those down, let it set, then do that a couple more times till you feel like you've got them all. worse case scenario they will show when you put on your final varnish/wax/etc and you'll have to iron it then re varnish the area

      @ivylaneinteriors a hard roller to press it down and get the bubbles out. Even a straight, wooden rolling pin could be used as you stick it down, going from one end to the other in one pass. It helps if someone else holds the veneer up as you roll it down. A hand roller is easier to work with for final pressing. Occasionally, a tiny hole made with a sewing needle allows you to push bubbles out.

      Since there's obvious wax on this piece, clean that I would suggest the following: clean off all the wax you can with your scraper and vacuum whatever, cover the waxed areas with a couple of layers of paper towels then using a pretty warm, warm iron go over the wet, the paper towels and see how much wax they can pull out of the wood with the heat And the paper towels to absorb the wax. You might be very surprised at how much you can get out of the surface that way. I tried this once, and it pretty much took almost all the wax out of the surface very easily. I've also raises the nap on the surface of the wood, which takes out, minor gouges and scrapes.

    It turned out GORGEOUS! Such a petty you had so much trouble with the veneer application... I don't know the cost of the veneer you bought but it is probably more expensive than painting. And yes, you should use a large spatula to apply the bonds. The top was really challenging to becoming even but YOU NAILED IT! Thanks so much for sharing .

    I had a similar problem painting my kitchen cabinets. The wood had split on some of the cabinet doors because of the sun. To say I used a ton of wood filler and wood putty is an understatement. But in the long run three years later my kitchen cabinets still look fantastic. That piece turned out beautifully. You did an outstanding job! Good for you, love that color.

    Nothing beats the make and sturdiness of old furniture. I love my rock maple bedroom set that my great grandmother gave me. I would pick older furniture over any of the new things being sold. There are few artisans that make old world furniture now. Your finished remake is beautiful! Have to confess though, I love the beautiful wood on the drawers.

    I really have great respect for all the hard work you put into this project. I loved the finished product. With today's selection of colors in homes, the Grey's and whites, it will fit in modern to farm house to Victorian. Truly a prized piece of furniture. Could be put in many different locations of a home. Dining room, den,living room, in a large fouier with a mirror placed above it . A bountiful bouquet of flowers or a nice art piece in the center. Possibilities are endless. Would love to own this piece.

    Two things. I love Bondo spreaders. They work great. Second was did you weigh down the veneer like with weights books etc? I would have maybe tried to flip it upside down to dry? Awesome end result tho!

    • @ivylaneinteriors
      @ivylaneinteriors  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, I have multiple Bondo spreaders, but I didn’t use them until later. 🥴 The ironing was supposed to take the place of weighing it down. 🤷‍♀️ I read later not to use yellow wood glue, but that was what they recommended. Lessons learned 🙌🏼
