About the color choice. After I was consulting with two other restorers, we decided that, the right thing would be to restore the latest version. Because both paint layers have now historical value and if I would strip the top layer, I probably would strip most of the old original paint along the way. Then I need to repaint it, but, it will not be old then. It is possible to clean only the top paint, but it will be very expensive solution. My client didn't want to pay extra, to restore the original color. So when I combined all those facts, the final choice was easy for me.
Indeed, sometimes very difficult choices have to be made when doing restoration work! Just curious: Was too much of the name and date that had been painted in gold gone to be able to accurately restore that detail, or was it the client's choice not to restore it?
Your comment saved this video for me. I was about to click away after hearing the music in the beginning but you made me wait. Thank you what a great channel to discover.
You made that old, sad, tired cabinet come back alive again. You didn't make it look new again either, which is awesome! You gave this piece of furniture its dignity and beauty once more and it's elegant! Thank you, Ahti!
While it can be fun to watch the transformation of a modern, mass produced piece of furniture, nothing compares to watching a master restorer literally bring a beautiful old piece back to life!! Bravo!!❤️
I could cry seeing how happy these pieces look, restored after so many years thinking they were dead and forgotten. They sing with pride. Thank you for saving the craftmanship of those carpenters who worked so long ago. Your work is AMAZING!
Can you imagine the stories that piece could tell?...Passed on from generation to generation. Seeing new life come into the world and familiar faces pass. A witness to all of the joys and heartbreaks of the human experience. It may be overly sentimental, but that's where my mind immediately goes when I see old furniture.

If I hadn’t seen this with my own eyes, I would have thought the finished piece was brand new. The patience, precision, skill and knowing how to use all of the machinery that can make these restorations possible is an art in itself. Amazing! Beautiful.
Wow. I am blown away by how great it looks. You can't see the repairs but just the beauty of that cabinet. You are so knowledgeable and so willing to share that knowledge. Thank you, Ahti, for this video. Your excellent storytelling, videography, and editing made me feel like I was standing next to you. This was a treat. Thanks again.
Ahti, you have created yet another masterpiece! You are a man of many talents and many skills. I think you used all of them in this piece. It makes me so happy to see an old piece like this look OLD, but yet well CARED for. I don't want them to look like new. You are such a dedicated man, and I can believe that it took 18 days to complete this. It needed a lot of repairs. The final reveal literally made me gasp. I was so stunned. Even though I expect all of your works to turn out beautifully, this one brought a tear to my eye. You are the Master, Ahti! I just watching you work your magic on these pieces. Thank you!!!
Oh my gosh, how absolutely stunning! I can’t believe you did that in 18 days! It is so wonderful to watch you restore a piece like this. You’re very multitalented. I always enjoy watching your videos. ❤😊❤
I must say it was a pleasure watching you work without aggravating music…just hearing the sounds of sanding and nails being hammered and watching an amazing restoration of a magnificent piece unfold. Fine workmanship!
Ahti's grin to the camera when he has a win with his "mad invention" = gold!!!😃 Thank you for taking the time and patience to film this awesome restoration. I am not likely to ever see such a piece in real life in my neck of the woods, but your videos and expert editing really tell such an interesting story, as is the fascination of watching you work your magic. Two thumbs up mate!
I'm awestruck! When I saw the final cabinet. I felt as if I were transported back hundreds of years, and in the room that held that cabinet. I can't imagine how one learned those skills to do all of that now, and also then. Thank you so much for sharing.
There is a restoration woodworker in the Northeast United States named Thomas Johnson who has a TH-cam channel. When I saw your lathe spitting out all that sawdust and what you commented on it I thought that if you didn't know Thomas Johnson you might be interested in talking to him about the lathe that he is patenting, that whisks away all of the sawdust so efficiently that when he is done there is virtually no sawdust in his workshop. That was a beautiful piece that you restored. I like that its age showed through your restoration and your meticulous attention to even the smallest items. I always look forward to your projects.
Sitting here appreciating the sounds in this video - sawing, sanding, drilling, grinding, hammering, etc. - and thinking how cool it would be to write a piece of music around it somehow. What a beautiful piece of furniture this hunk of damage turned out to be. And I must add excellent editing. Kudos!
😍 This cabinet looks now as it have been heritaged very savely in a family. Adorable piece. On top you really safed the old inscription. Really good job👍
That looks amazing! It’s good to leave a few dings and knocks as they are; they’re part of the piece’s 300 years of faithful service. I love the way you bring things back to life! ❤🇬🇧🏴
I am truly blown away by your skill! I so wish I could learn to do this kind of restoration. At 53, I still might have a go! Can’t get enough of watching you work. Thank you so much for all you upload.
You are amazing! Astonishing! Awe inspiring! I love watching your videos because it is such a pleasure to see a true Master at work. I also love your videos because you always work on beautiful pieces, and your work respects the original design and the original woodworkers. ❤ I agree with the previous comment, tho: It would have been great to see the former colors.
If restoration is mainly about cracks & joints, then that is exactly what I am in need of!. I expect this was once someone's most prized possession, & your beautiful work has made it into exactly that again. Well done! As far as the color, in architecture it is an eternal conundrum to decide how far back to go. The Notre Dame restoration struggled with that decision; in my neighborhood of early 1900's craftsman homes, the same. I think you made the right decision here. Beautiful.
As always, we saw a suitable reconstruction full of techniques and ideas. Personally, as a carpenter and restorer, I liked the repair of the upper part of this piece, and at the same time, it is valuable to me that you implemented the design with a lathe. Great and don't be tired for all this trouble💚🤍❤
When mister managed to make the key. He really saved the old cabinet. Some of my great great grandmother old cabinet doesnt have a key anymore. And I dont want to forced open it.
This is amazing how you are restoring this awesome cabinet! Your skills are master quality. It has been a joy to watch how you have brought this awesome cabinet back to life. Wow, so glad you were able to repair the lock. Great work you do. Wow, so very beautiful. Great work!
👌👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful I do agree, the craftsmanship and result is stunning, however a piece of furniture of that stated age and history should never have anything but period treatments and finishes to maintain its true beauty and value. I have beautiful pieces and am glad they have be maintained with no chemical treatments or finishes. I do wish you every success all the same
Thank you - finally someone with some sense of true furniture restoration commenting on the video. I’ll admit I could never do this, but I’ve seen much better antique restoration that is done in a less ham-fisted way. It just seemed rushed to me, and not at all meticulous. Perhaps the client couldn’t afford it to be professionally done.
When you showed us the colors of this beautiful corner cabinet, I was hoping you would repaint the pieces in those colors. Of course, if they’re not the original paint colors or the owner did not want them there was not much you could do, but do the best restoration you could and you did. Beautiful work.
This must have been a Swedish ship‘s cabinet from the captain‘s cabin. In the secret compartiment he probably keept his finest bottles. Again an amazing piece of restoration, Ahti!
That looks amazing. My late father was a Caroenter/joiner. Tge hours I spent watching him in his workshop. I miss those days so much and the smell of wood. If I smell know, it transport me right back to his workshop of wood and savings. Happy memories ❤❤❤

Great job as usual 😊
But I've got one question, what was written on the cabinet ? 😅
Seems logical!
Beautiful work, as always! ❤🇦🇺 And what was written on the cabinet door??? 🤔
Indeed, sometimes very difficult choices have to be made when doing restoration work! Just curious: Was too much of the name and date that had been painted in gold gone to be able to accurately restore that detail, or was it the client's choice not to restore it?

Yes, I wish that part could be figured out. I personally found the overall look to be quite dark, and the colors would have relieved that.
