Those turned out amazing. Your "paint by numbers" assessment of how Space Marines are usually painted I think can be applied to basically anything GW-related, especially if you only watch their videos and buy their products. We need more videos like this to show that getting a little artsy and learning some basic color theory can really elevate one's hobby. This is a legitimate form of art and GW approaches it more like a scientific formula.
I have these Sternguard, I have to agree with you, they are some of my favourite space marines ever made and I'm not sure that will ever change. Love the videos, keep up the good work :)
They look really cool Jay, the base coat really added a lot of interest and saturation that otherwise would have been lacking. I recently found that purple ink works really well for shading nmm bronze, if you glaze yellow ink over it, it starts to look more reddy brown but the slight blue hue creates an extra level of depth that really adds to the effect. Experimental painting is where growth happens :) great job as always guys.
I read "Retro Marines" and I instantly think of bases with drybrushed sand and trims in Goblin Green 😅. Jay, this is an amazing paintjob and I'd agree that these are your best marines so far - this red/purple blend thing is just next level and the lenses are superb.
Not only do I agree that that old metal, Sternguard kit is one of the best set of sculpts EVER, but it was really enjoyable to watch you work through your inventive process. Well done!
This video makes me so happy. My sister (a very talented art school graduate) taught me color theory when I was getting back into miniatures in 2020. Learning to paint well was my competitive escape from the chef world where the stress of that was eating me alive… I found it very relaxing to be practicing these new skills like nmm glazing and osl. They were hard and my good minis turned to sucky minis but then they started to get good again, but I was getting stressed from painting. So I started painting in the same “painterly” style in this video, and started having a blast again. the minis are good but not where I always wanted them to be as compared to like the heavy metal guys and golden demon dudes Seeing this video makes me happy because now I know that this style can lead to breath taking results if I just keep practicing it! Thank you!
0:30 Eehhhhhh, speaking for myself, not really why people are mad. It's not even true realy. Space marines aren't taller now, there's just other space marines that are taller than the existing space marines. I myself and I expect other people have reservations about primaris marines cus they're kinda just a soft replacement of what we were invested in. If you don't like space marines and collect something else, chances are your bread and butter units have gotten an upgrade to newer modelling standards lately, or it's written on the wall that they eventually will do. Regular actual marines that a lot of older fans are invested in are (or were with the new horus heresy stuff, fingers crossed) basically the only thing that had a red stamp on them basically guaranteeing they'd never get a real update because their new more marketable pseudo-space marine friends are toddling around getting in new fans at the detriment of old ones. The funny part of that is that while regular marines are stuck in stunty limbo, primaris marines are only around the height regular ones should be. So technically the entire range is stuck in slightly-shorter-than-they-should-be purgatory. I know some people have coped with it just fine but for me I'd only really be able to stomach getting primaris stuff en-mass if I could sustainably get regular marines in true scale alongside them, hence the spark of hope that is those new Mark 6 marines. I can only hope we'll see those scalings get ported over to mark 7 and 8 bois (also my precious Mark 3's pls). If I can get my favourite old marine squad types and armour varities standing shoulder to shoulder with the new guys rather than stuntedly hovering around the height of new regular human models, I'll be very happy.

I love the A.demidov style so much, and this reminds me of his work. You nailed these, beautiful job. You legend, you make three videos a week and stream every night, and paint epic mini's. And always more to say c:
I'll never be sold on primaris marines. They can have good stories, nice looking models, but early lore did a lot of damage and for me they represented a shift in universe dynamic to a less grimdark setting and that just doesn't jive with me. I even have a similar problem with the newer Horus Heresy books. The designs of the older stern guard look just fantastic and they were a great choice for this kind of scheme, if ever you get your hands on some tyranic war veterans you have to do something as interesting with them, they're just great older kits
@@SWTobito0702 I think they've released some very good models, but I put emphasis on SOME. I think the new sternguard vets look very good and are a good kit for the range, same with the terminators if you count those as primaris, but for every 1 adequate - good model or kit it feels like there's 4 or 5 that are just bad and they really saturate the 40k range when it's a game that's got to give love to everyone. As for lore, they'll always be lacking. The writers realize it's a bad idea and then they back pedal, but still they can just pump out armies of primaris marines in no time. Kind of driving away but also leaning into chapters and their identities, they also have well established and unique cultures and heritage that have developed as a result of centuries or millenia. Like how do you reinforce a chapter that practices ritualistic cannibalism? These marines get there and they just accept something that slowly became more and more accepted over centuries? Then there is the universal aspect of ancestor worship. Wargear isn't just weapons and armor, it's a connection to the chapters past and their heroic deeds, when a marine puts on his armor he is literally stepping into the boots of the last guy who wore it, it's a connection to past glories and to his past that he must uphold. There's a huge aspect of ancestor worship in every chapter, even the most practical ones. All of that is erased by the introduction of primaris marines. Their armor is brand new, their tanks are brand new, their mindsets are brand new, they change the unique chapter identities and when they don't it feels forced and unbelievable.

Heck, I even had a metal power armoured human miniature hefting a shuriken catapult. Wouldn’t find that sort of xenos armament these days!
These are definitely a core aspect of my mini hobby and what I most associate with 40k thanks to when I started. The paint job came out great, theres a lot of energy to it that almost makes them look glowing.

I use a magenta ink shadow with a mixture of talassar blue and aethermatic blue contrast for the blue of the armour so it’s transparent enough for my undercoats to show through I didn’t even think of making a glaze through the airbrush incredible job
These look great... somehow they remind me a lot of "The Death of Hope" fanfilm. The red cast gives it a look as if it's sunrise/set or the battlefield is awashed in flames.
A cool black templars color combo for the paint style you just did could be a reddish-brown undercoat, black basecoat, and blue-grey highlights. Could give it a rusty look
The Buy Painted reference made me check- the dude's last video was 6 years ago! Unsurprisingly, his painting still holds up with what's being done now.
I enjoy the history of the space marines. Lately I been finding older sculpts on ebay and the sort. And I honestly been loving the experience, adding character to your army with a little variety is always fun. Little treasures that tell there own story.
use a pipette with white spirit/pigment fixer and drop it over the pigments. If you game with them, its going to come off over time. If you seal it it wont. A varnish wont just do the trick. Need to seal then varnish your minis.
That bit in the beginning wasn't why people were mad. People were mad because the lore felt like a cheap way to explain why someday your current minis were no longer going to be valid.
I think the real worst part about it is that Girlyman was like "Yeah, my codex? Lol get rid of that thing. Tactical squads sucks. We're redoing everything." Even ignoring the fact tactical squads and the chapter organization are actually pretty well designed, "realistic" military organization IMO (we are trying to play a wargame, right? Shouldn't it emulate war to some extent? But that's just me), it's that they just completely redid how space marines work, no real equivalents to terminators or jump pack assault squads, no chapter-specific iconic units (except for "paint your intercessors black to make them Death Company!'), mono-purpose mono-special weapon squads, new equivalents of all of the tanks but with antigrav and MORE GUNS, primaris refusing to ride in perfectly good rhinos (and forcing them into extremely points-expensive transports, but that's another story). If it were just "here's an explanation for how marines are getting changed into truescale," I don't think anyone would've minded nearly as much. But it's space marines getting replaced by a totally different army that is aesthetically similar.
@@innocentsmith6091 i also think they only changed the name from tactical squad to intercessor because its easier for copyright, same reason its "astra militarum".
That would be such a cool way to paint black armor. I might have to try something similar for my Iron Hands. Without an airbrush, thinking white primer, violet basecoat or even contrast, metal drybrush/pseudo-zenithal, watery dark coldgrey for the highlights?
Woot you know Jay has made it having ads!!! And just like him it has a gaming ulterior motive, making it better for all. I love this guy and what he represents, good wholesome gaming awesomeness.
That's actually a great way to view the Primaris Marines.....the only gripe I have with Primaris is that GW will take absolutely ffoooorrrreeeevvveeeerrrrrrr to update some of the older Classics to being True-Scale....and by Classics I mean Terminators, Dreadnoughts, Devastators and Assault Marines. Although I have had an absolute BLAST converting Primaris Marines into having Firstborn Weapons(I converted a Primaris Eliminator into having a Power Axe and Plasma Pistol from my Devastator Kit), although looking on the brightside(and ignoring the price tags lol) it's just more reasons for me to Kitbash and go truly WILD with my SpaceMarines. I am genuinely excited for when I can get my hands on a bunch of different Horus Heresy Kits, Terminator Kits, Assault Marine Kits, Devastator Kits and Primaris Kits because then I can Kitbash a bunch of SpaceMarines. I'm thinking I might go with a mix of Firstborn and Primaris Marines in most of my Squads, to represent how much my Homebrew Legion has embraced Primaris Marines. Perhaps I'll even incorporate their Homebrew Lore to be that they are so trusted by the Mechanicus that Belisarius Cawl let them have early access to some Primaris SpaceMarines. If you're curious about my Homebrew Legion, their Lore is very much a WIP and I change it regularly whenever I feel inspired and have a "EUREKA!" moment. Part of why I went with a Homebrew Legion instead of a Homebrew Chapter was so I could have some Lore&logic backing up why they have a mix of lots of rare/exotic 30k Wargear in the Grimdark Grimdarkness of the 42nd Millenium. I love how cool and epic the awesome, regal&ornate 30k Wargear is but all Grimdarkified in the Grimdarkness of the 42nd Millenium, just seeing so much Tech from such a hopeful and unique Era as the Great Crusade being used alongside the Wargear that survived the stagnation of the Imperium into the 42nd Millenium is just so cool to me, seeing remnants of the far more practical and logical 30k Imperium being used in the 40k Imperium is really fascinating to me(for example, small groups and factions within the Imperium still using Combined Arms Warfare as much as possible like having hordes of Skitarii, Tanks ,Legio Cybernetica, Astartes, Knights and Titans all fighting together and being so much more efficient than the massive horde of several million Guardsmen Infantry with pitiful coordination with their Artillery,Air Support and Tanks is just so cool. It's like seeing 2 different Civilizations that are on different levels of advancement fighting alongside eachother, kinda like those moments in Halo where the U.N.S.C. and Ex-Covenant Forces teamed up to fight the Covenant and stop the Halo Rings from being Fired.)
I'm kinda stuck in the mindset of paint by numbers and neatness, just goes to show you can get amazing results just letting go of shooting for perfection, they look so cool!
As a kid my favourite were the vanguard veterans. That was the first time I grew a pair and highlighted, wish I still had them, might have to get em again, You've left me feeling inspired bro
Those Sternguard veteran models are among the best GW produced, compared to other Marine models, they had produced up to then. Like the paint job. I wish I could do that as I want to paint my models and use them as the missing 2nd and 11th Legions. I am working on their Lore, and can only hope it will approach the depth of the 18 known Legions. Keep up the great work, Jay.
Okey! So if you read this, first off… this have to be my favorite channel of inspiration when it comes to painting and hobbying in general. This technique you did now… I k ow you said you were tired of marines BUT ;) plz a Black Templar using this theme or style how to put it.
This red base looks absolutely amazing! I think I'll try something like this for the space marines in my Ultimate starter. I've just gotten back into 40k and painting after having done other stuff for 20 years. It a very exciting time for me :D
Jay I love that you said "I watched every bypainted video ten times over and while I couldnt replicate what he did I got better for trying" because thats my expirience with your chanell
These models are so cool. I'm repainting the sergeant right now for my Iron Hands. They never get old and look so much better than the sternguard models that came out later (the plastic ones). 🥰
I love the thinking with the red base, if I'm not mistaking, you could have gone yellow, you would have some greenish shadows/reflections, which could compliment very well a green base, like the light reflecting on the grass or anything else in the same vibe, but man you killed it
Contrast undershade is amazing. I first tried it on the critters in the OG WarCry box and they ended up being the best painted out of the box, to the point when I play WC, people fawn over them and not the *actual* dudes. lol
Hard disagree, the scale up is the best part of primaris and they would have been a total flop of they didn't look good since even now so many hate the lore. The issue is GW dragging their feet on upgrading everything else to fit new model standards.
@@Remixersoloman I like the Primaris too but I can understand why people who have built up a collection of minis over the past 10 plus years would take issue. Especially since it is probsbly just a matter of time until they are considered against the rules.
@@costagauci5719 well those people don't make GW any money. I'll always complain about their shitty pricing and business model but I won't blame them for... selling models, instead of appeasing people who have already collected.
Damn, I really love that red base coat. I'm gonna try new a new chapter with a dark Fang/Mechanicus Standard Grey base colour soon, and this has inspired me to maybe try giving them a rich purple (?) base coat to make the colours pop a bit more. Worth a try!
every time we go to our locals, our first born player asks the manager 'gary?, are we going to get new stuff for firstborn?, or are primaris taking over?"
What an astonishing transformation. And man, the newer models are just so much better looking. Ignore the implications in gameplay for sight lines and such.. ignore that, just the aesthetic and scale is greatly improved.
My local hobbyshop sells used warhammer models. They have two entire buckets full of tactical marines. I am really tempted to just buy up a ton to have a firstborn army I can display somewhere. I may also switch out my primaris model's helmets with the oldschool ones, as I find the old vader-esc helmet super cool.
So like... doing the style/method you did for these ultramarines, if you were doing blood angels, you'd do a blue basecoat? Or for dark angels you'd do maybe an orange base coat?
I’d really like a non heroic modern warfare skirmish war game to play. Just able to play if not irl factions (United States, Brazil etc) then other similar factions. If guard come out and can take an entire Paratrooper army (elysians) and they have a model range to represent it, I’ll probably buy in. Or I might use mantic minis (they aren’t heroic scale but I like how they look)
Great video. Makes me want to buy some old space marines... Having discovered the hobby with AoS and only getting into 40K with 8th ed I've never had anything but Primaris.
All my old MK7 and 6 guys were true scaled LONG ago using spacers, About 40 dudes only tho. Most of the "marines" I've been using are made with stormcast bodies from the 1st edition AoS. I have yet to paint a primaris dude.
I had all my old Crimson fists full tactical company, Terminators, scouts, etc. traded in to build a Primaris army. Kept Pedro, Command Squad, Venerable Dreadnaught, One librarian and Chaplain. I had every character and squad leader named. But I moved on! Now I’m making the Hounds of Dorn!!
I don't dislike primaris because they're new. I dislike them because of the artstyle. Older power armour sets look like the marine has gone through hell, Primaris just looks a bit too clean, crisp, and uniform. Which is clearly the intention. I much prefered the old tactical box, even though the models are less dynamic, I much prefered the armour style.

@@Corsharkgaming don’t act like Astra militarum isn’t one of the coolest names out there
@@madbanditgaming8788 Astra Militarum = "Star Army". 😄
@@PhD777 first off, Star army is still cool, but calling it “Astra Militarum” still sounds super cool
Jay: Firstborn are coming to an end
Horus Heresy: Allow me to introduce myself.
GOD DAMN THESE LOOK MAGICAL
I have LITERALLY NEVER SEEN ultras this GOOD
As a kid my favourite were the vanguard veterans.
Just noticed you covered the lamp with a translucent paper. Will steal!
Those lens look fantastic
These look great, really distinctive and atmospheric. Plus, it seems a method that lends itself to speed painting.
I think they look brilliant 😉 old school hot rods used to use a red primer before painting blue to good call
Damn those are nice man! Really loving the red underpaint and makes the Smurfs a lot more interesting
Okey! So if you read this, first off… this have to be my favorite channel of inspiration when it comes to painting and hobbying in general. This technique you did now… I k ow you said you were tired of marines BUT ;) plz a Black Templar using this theme or style how to put it.
‘Expanding the crusade’ was what the Thunder warriors were told as well
Brown with judociously stippled gold looks really good, I'm gonna have to try gray and silver...
I'm the other way around with my armies where I started with space marines and now I've got a small necron army growing
These models are so cool. I'm repainting the sergeant right now for my Iron Hands. They never get old and look so much better than the sternguard models that came out later (the plastic ones). 🥰
love the buy painted mention, he is a legend
I love the thinking with the red base, if I'm not mistaking, you could have gone yellow, you would have some greenish shadows/reflections, which could compliment very well a green base, like the light reflecting on the grass or anything else in the same vibe, but man you killed it
"Nothing is over! Nothing! You just dont turn it off!"
EOB: "Space marines as we know them are over..."
10th edition: "Are you sure about that?"
Contrast undershade is amazing. I first tried it on the critters in the OG WarCry box and they ended up being the best painted out of the box, to the point when I play WC, people fawn over them and not the *actual* dudes. lol
To be honest changing scale is much more of an issue then aesthetic changes.
Agreed
I really, really like how these turned out. Great job!
These are great, you nailed it!
Damn, I really love that red base coat. I'm gonna try new a new chapter with a dark Fang/Mechanicus Standard Grey base colour soon, and this has inspired me to maybe try giving them a rich purple (?) base coat to make the colours pop a bit more. Worth a try!
Jay finally cracked the secret to get me to watch an ad segment, nerdy coffee.
Awesome paint job, as always. I have the metal Sternguard and Vanguard Vets, great models. I added them into my BT army as well!
they look so much better after repaint... very well done !
every time we go to our locals, our first born player asks the manager 'gary?, are we going to get new stuff for firstborn?, or are primaris taking over?"
I just picked up 12 of these metal marine’s, plus metal Kantor and a customised land raider for them all to travel in. All for Kill Team 2.0
The pigment powder looks like Kraft Mac N Cheese flavor packet powder
"Warhammers are a group very receptive to change" that line aged like fine wine 😂
This video is major inspo.... I'm about to paint a bunch of ynnari... this paint job upside-down might be it!!
That is a really nice looking squad ✨
Once again you've done some older models proud.
_Fucking Legendary!_
Excellent video; thank you!
Your metal Ulras look fantastic. Those were some clever ideas and I'll have make a note of them.
I tried red under blue for my crimson fists, it's a nice effect for sure.
Mad respect for the buy painted reference
So like... doing the style/method you did for these ultramarines, if you were doing blood angels, you'd do a blue basecoat? Or for dark angels you'd do maybe an orange base coat?
I got these guys at home, I painted them as different chapters many times, right now they are a squad of Crimson fists along with Pedro Kantor
Those stern guard are my favourite models GW have ever put out.
I have to admit tho, the proportions of primaris are a joy to paint.
My painting did get remarkably better when I started my Primaris space wolves successors.
All my old MK7 and 6 guys were true scaled LONG ago using spacers, About 40 dudes only tho.
Most of the "marines" I've been using are made with stormcast bodies from the 1st edition AoS.
I have yet to paint a primaris dude.
I gotta say, I’d love to see a more in depth guide of how you handled these. They look amazing! Love the loose style.
Those are nice. Love the quick way you did the metals 🤘🏼
I love your work.
Just noticed that the marine with the plasma combi bolter has a deformed head.
You can particularly notice it @11:15 😅
I don't dislike primaris because they're new. I dislike them because of the artstyle. Older power armour sets look like the marine has gone through hell, Primaris just looks a bit too clean, crisp, and uniform. Which is clearly the intention. I much prefered the old tactical box, even though the models are less dynamic, I much prefered the armour style.
You should try the Space Marine Heroes range. Genuinely great modern sculpts of classic Marines.
They look awesome! Well done. And I agree with ya, the new models are opportunities, not setbacks.
