i showed this video to my friend's grandpa, who has been painting and playing since 2nd edition (he fell in love with Plague Marines and has not let go since) and he was amazed at how authentic these look. Good stuff!
This was profoundly relaxing. I don't even have nostalgia for this era of minis, having gotten into this hobby only 2 years ago, but something about the calm and methodical approach you take here alongside your soothing narration makes this video like a warm bubble bath.
After you apply the microsol, instead of using a Q-tip, brush the decal out from the center using a flat /square brush. you'll get much better surface blending.
I also think (even though the vintage guide show the sword as one solid color) that he missed some blood dripping from the Captians Sword. Thoughts on this ? I think there's two visible blood drippings on the front of the sword & one on the back. Maybe GW didn't want to paint it to violent but they molded dripping blood in case someone wanted some blood dripping? Any thoughts?
Excited to see if you do Blood Angels next! Either a bright red tactical squad or maybe you can do a death company squad lead by a 2nd edition chaplain? Keep up the great work.
I really hope you have the box art Sergeant with power fist. I know that there are other valid choices for the period, but in my opinion that would be amazing to see.
There's something really, really cool to me about the captain having that unique, metallic sheen to his armor; not to mention how the fancy gold is reserved for him, too. I feel like that sort of distinction is missing from modern 40K - now _everyone_ is decked out with gold highlights and the like.
Army Painter Goblin Green does have pretty good coverage but like with most AP paints you need to shake it to hell and back, and once you think you've shaken it all that is possible - shake it some more. Paint agitators are a must in every AP bottle. If you threat every new AP paint like you're bringing it back from the dead you won't got far wrong.
They have a bit of extra medium in them. It has instructions included. Shake, empty out the extra medium, shake again and the you're good to go. Great paints.

Wow two years since your lovely unboxing video. It is one of my favourite videos in the hobby. Back then I was able to paint, then last year I had a servical surgery and due to ongoing pain I cant paint anymore. Now I am both happy and sad while watching these videos…
One of two warhammer I watch. Appreciate your genuine attitude towards the hobby, the fact that you have more than one painted army, and that you are not just constantly sucking GW off.
They look amazing, great job. Slight note though, the "3" denotes the squad number, the company number is denoted by the red line on their knee (3rd company as it happens) :)
YAAAAASSS!!! The nostalgia, the atmosphere, the paint job!! Wonderful! You COULD also try to paint the night lords! Very interesting scheme, i think you'd like it
The paint job looks absolutely phenomenal! It was so interesting to see the old aesthetic, and you can see how the change in painting techniques, tone, and quality of paints all combined to define the look of the time and evolve to the painting style and aesthetic we have today. Absolute joy of a watch, keep up the good work!
I think these might be my favorite things you've ever painted, and quite possibly the best you've shown on TH-cam. Tremendous work! Blood Angels next :D
I'd say the Army Painter metalic set would best replicate the old metalics if you just don't happen to have 30 year old paints sitting around. Its got a emerald green similar to this, and the gold looks very close to its corrupted gold which has that bit of green tinge to it like the pot here has
I confirm this, very close match. Shame that army painter's non metallic base paints have garbage coverage though (all of them..). But their metallics and washes (tones) are fantastic and I use them all the time.
Space Wolves, Orks, Eldar, Ultramarines, Tyranids, and Imperial Guard all come before it. Chaos and Angels of Death we both eased in ‘96, Chaos may have been first I can’t really remember & my copies are elsewhere so I can’t check. Those two are the best of the 2nd edition codices imo. I do wonder where this info come from cause this isn’t the first time I’ve seen a youtuber get that wrong.
@@thebag1981 Eldar and Orks may have come before Angels (I thought Eldar did when I posted) but the Angels definitely came before the others. This was a hilarious comment to me, joking or not. If you aren't kidding though it's basically like wearing a blessing. Imagine pinning Bible verses onto your armor. Basically what it is in short
The fact that 30 year old pots are still salvageable and still look _great_ when painted, yet modern GW pots I've seen dried and gunked up *on the shelves*
I bought a pot of agrellan earth recently from a friendly local gaming store and the paint was so dry and thick I thought it was like their dry paints range at first, nearly impossible to spread on the base. I then bought another pot and the second one was more of a thick base paint consistency. They really are no good at staying sealed are they.. I did manage to fix the first pot with some water though, a bit of water in there and stir the crap out of it with a wooden skewer . I overdid it with the water and made it thinner than intended but you know what? It actually works even better when thinned down like that, I got bigger cracks that way and it was easier to paint on in a thick layer.
Hey Guy, could you go ahead and just narrate all the Horus Heresy novels please and thank you? But seriously, you've got a wonderful voice to listen to. Obviously your voice sounds nice, but you've got a cadence to your speech and a sound as if you're smiling while you speak that's so pleasant. Like, you could read how much I owe in taxes and I'd be having a great day.
This is what I love about TH-cam: a couple of months ago I didn't know anything about Warhammer, I saw some comments that were "Praising the Omnissiah" and got sucked in, even though I don't play it. And now, after crunching a bunch of videos I'm here, never hold a paint brush in my hand, mesmerized by how the different colors and passes come together to create beautiful miniatures: I mean, that Captain is so good it makes me want to bite it too see if it tastes as good as it looks! Superb work!
That’s kind of like my idea where my custom chapter that was excommunicated but still fights for the emperor and is dragon themed has some loyalist heritics in there ranks that survived István 3 and I’m even painting up a dreadnought as rylanor
Gosh Guy, I love your videos so much. And that's coming from a qualified filmmaker that has loved the Warhammer hobby since I discovered my first "white dwarf" magazine during the mid to late 00s. Your tips and tricks are always well explained, your videos easy to follow for noobs, but still fun for veterans, and always motivates me to delve deeper into the hobby. Also sending my best to Penny, baby and doggo.
I'm not usually one for commenting on videos, but I just want to say, I've been involved in the hobby since I was 13 (now 34) and you have given me confidence in painting I never thought I'd have. Also love the retro videos, a bit of nostalgia goes a long way! Thank you midwinter 👌
I was not expecting the joy I got from this nostalgic tour through old paints and techniques (many of which I haven't moved much beyond 😉) Extra points for the gemstone boops
Blood Angels! Also this has been great to watch. That box set was my first exposure to Warhammer 40K and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I've thought the Blood Angels looked way better since they got rid of the black trim on the shoulder pads, but it was thanks to this set that I developed such a love for both the Dark Angels and Blood Angels.
Those look amazing. I got into 40K back around this time (93-94) and still have some of those old models in my 2 company strength DIY marine chapter. (which has been in storage for 10 years now!!!)
Love it. The colours, the older highlighting technique for area rather than just edge. The captain in particular came up really well. It’s a good tip though to always put the number on the banner in an upper corner when there is something going to get in the way. Had the same with an iron halo covering the banner detail at the bottom.
This is a big help to me! I have one of those Dark Angels captains with the cape pack, but didn't know what specifically he was until now. Very glad to find that out.
You are right to be proud of these they are excellent. Whilst a lot of your videos are accessible to us mere mortals, this one I thought was of a very high standard which shows a great versatility on your part. Blood Angels next!
Oh, that did the trick. A warm cup of Dark Angels. My 2nd Edition set is calling for paint. I put it together a while back and didn’t want to ruin them. Thanks Guy!
Hey Guy! You probably have a lot of other comments to sort through so you probably won't see this, but I just wanted to say thank you! Your videos are some of the best out there, and I love those times I get a couple times a week where I can sit back, work on painting a model, and watch your newest upload. The music is almost comforting to me, and I know when I click on a video I'm in for a lot of good tips and fun! Thanks, Guy!
This was amazing. Absolutely love the that green colour. Please do more of these retro unboxing and paintings. An Ultra Marine retro paint in this style would be very nice to watch. Any paint scheme from that Heavy Metal book would be amazing. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
Guy are you kidding? You crushed this paint job! It's the spring image of the 'Eavy Metal guide photos! Fantastic job as always! I would love to see some blood angels next over the boringmarines
I naively thought that older Warhammer models weren't as well painted as the modern models. now I know that they definitely were and I marvel at how good the old paint styles were

These are amazing! Wish modern 40k looked like this.
This is possibly the most relaxing and retro fuzzy warm painting video I've ever seen
I'm not usually one for commenting on videos, but I just want to say, I've been involved in the hobby since I was 13 (now 34) and you have given me confidence in painting I never thought I'd have.
Also love the retro videos, a bit of nostalgia goes a long way! Thank you midwinter 👌
Absolutely love these. Games workshop really should do a line of retro figures and paints again.
Love the minis, Dark Angels are my favourite loyalist legion and from your video I learned that my legion death guard has old models.
I was not expecting the joy I got from this nostalgic tour through old paints and techniques (many of which I haven't moved much beyond 😉)
Extra points for the gemstone boops
Thank you. I've been collecting Dark Angels for almost 15 years now. Great work!
More of these videos!
Playing the 2. Edition would be A+!
The Demporer stands with you and playing 40k your way!
Those look amazing. I got into 40K back around this time (93-94) and still have some of those old models in my 2 company strength DIY marine chapter. (which has been in storage for 10 years now!!!)
Your best painting yet IMO! Id love to see blood angels next.
Man, this is a trip down memory lane.
These retro videos are always an absolute treat! Would love to see Blood Angels done next!
Love this video Guy! I don't have any memories of the retro era (newer painter), but I love the art style and the vibrant colors.
Thanks Guy!
Your cheerful narration makes your videos such a joy to watch!
Came back from the pub and honestly this is the highlight of the night
Guy are you kidding? You crushed this paint job! It's the spring image of the 'Eavy Metal guide photos! Fantastic job as always! I would love to see some blood angels next over the boringmarines
i get so exited when i see that you have uploaded! Thank you so much for keeping me motivated it this hobby!
I naively thought that older Warhammer models weren't as well painted as the modern models. now I know that they definitely were and I marvel at how good the old paint styles were
amazing painting, this is the era I started actively collecting myself, I remember those old paints like mithril silver, brings back memories
i liked your take on the models best, they looked very nostalgic and true to the era of the paint/minifigures. super blast from the past. :) great work
