Hey so i know this is an older video, but i love this grimdark look, its amazing, and ill be doing it for my Blood Angels for sure. The thing is, i also have Sanguinary Guard.....and Dante...meaning lots of gold....so i was wondering if you could do a grimdark video for a gold coloured marines: Sanguinary guard, Custodies, stuff like that. I'd love that very much, especially now with Custodies being very popular. :) thanks.

@@vampy879 most likely you can adapt an existing paintjob to this...maybe darken the edges. won't have the super nice buildup effect, but can still look great.
I love how you talk about when you progress to a certain point you 'stop thinking in boxes' of like "I have to take X steps to finish this part of the model". I've noticed only recently that instead of dissecting a model it into these 'boxes', I can just start and go with the flow. It's a lot more relaxed!
This is an absolutely amazing show of talent from you as usual. This is EXACTLY how I imagine grimdark, not lacking in colour but realistic. I'd love to see a series like this where it takes the traditional schemes of most armies and does this. Especially for colours like black which can tend to be very bland or hard to highlight.

A truely awesome scheme there, and the effects achieved in almost a 'less is more' way - only a few layers of paint applied a certain way, when the Grim Dark style is almost always seen as 'after the rust enamal wash you then want a grease wash, and later there will be a dirt and grime enamal wash. Finally a smokey oil paint to grease everything. Then Pigments.' And as a big fan of yours, please only release videos when you feel they are ready. No need to rush them to meet a deadline - reminds me of an advert for Grolsch Lager we had in the UK - Quality takes time, these things cant be rushed, only drink it when it's ready (perhaps your voice put me in mind of it!)
Great technique. I tried it out earlier the and love it. I'm not a very good painter but my leftover blood angles are going to get this treatment. Amazing video, i have been eagerly following all the Grim Dark videos as you release them! I am very curious how you would tackle Dark Angels because they have such a darker base colour. I find it tricky to wrap my head around without them looking like Salamanders... Would you apply this technique but just start with a very dark base colour and work up to something that is still fairly dark? Or would it work better to treat it as black and use the style from your Black Templar video? Curious if any other Trovariates have some input?
It would be the exact same my friend: choose a dark colour that’s not blue, maybe even brown again for that rust look, then stipple in dark blue and stipple in lighter shades
I think what makes you a Next Level Miniature Painter is how you draw your viewers in with your technique of talking through your vision of what you want you want the project piece too look like and convey at the end All while showing your various techniques. I had found only in the last year that painting a bit over the decals is highly important to blend them in a bit more, thanks for pointing this out. This is a fine document of the grimdark distressed look. Ultramarine and Imperial Fist would be interesting for the remaining primary colours. Rust with yellow would be interesting to do right. I loved watching you do this live. I used a brush to stipple a red/black scheme on a half-fiend Behir about a month ago, so it was awesome to watch you refine the process for me! You’re awesome and your content is top-tier!
This style of painting is how I do terrain. It is also the best way to paint Orks and the classic ramshackle style. I’m glad someone of stature in the community is showing off this style and introducing people to the possibilities of painting without feeling like you have to paint a certain way just because it’s established.

Gonna try this this weekend but make brighter like was shown at the end at 22:08 for a millisecond. Been trying to decide between black and white undercoat for the bright red effect but i love the affect show in this video.

Love this - I'm going to try these techniques out on an assault intercessor squad. They've been with Gulliman on his Indomitus Crusade for a couple of hundred years before finally joining the BA on Baal after the Tyranids were defeated. They show the signs of wear and battle damage after centuries of war and have yet to learn the graces and artisan ways of the BA 😊

I personally, along with everyone in our local area, don't use pigment powders. That's a lot of people. So, glad you showed a SUPER easy "dust" effect. I forgot I can do this without pigments. THANK YOU !!
I painted an ork boss by layering up from black and loved it. The contrast from this approach is eye popping. I tried the same on a marine, about 3 times, and it was awful. My style worked ok with the organic grungy cloth and flesh with bits of scrap that make up most of an ork, but not on my marines. You sir, have nailed it!! I shall be ripping off your ideas soon!!

@@trovarion na no worries. it is pretty complete. i am just a bit struggling because i have always used basecoating and edge highlighting. this is so different but so much fun. i could draw a lot useful bits from the ultramarine "slapchop" and the other grimdark videos. I absolutely love this way of way painting. your videos are the reason i started another blood angel army after 25 years. I sold my minis back then but in my mind they returned from a very long campaign :)
I'd definitely agree that grim dark should not automatically mean dirty, at least not with armies like Space Marines, Eldar, Tau, etc. I think you hit the nail on the head with your interpretation.
Wow!... just wow. I like gritty space marines and weathering is a process I enjoy doing on my miniatures, but this is quite a refreshing take on the subject. I mean, the whole process is based around weathering and battle damage instead of it being another step as you said in the video. Hats off for this experiment and thank you for sharing it with the community. I must say your take on Grimdark and how to bring it to life on miniature painting is exactly what 40k is about to me - a story driven hobby, both miniature painting and tabletop gaming. A very dark story mind you... I will be trying out your method on my next miniature. I play Raptors Space Marines (military green) so I have a feeling I can translate your approach on the blood angels to my own models. Painted my first few marines from the new edition using the scheme and I will be painting all of them from the Warhammer 40k Imperium collector's book the same way. are usually Ultra Smurfs, but then the symbols of the Order are simply ground away. the work is worth it to me with the result. you definitely have my subscription. I really enjoy to see you trying different techniques painting minis. Grimdark with only acrylics is something I explore my self. This was very helpful!
You could try a wool dauber instead of a sponge, they are very cheap and you can attack it with scissors if you want a more broken pattern or a smaller face.
This is true Grimdark! Great job as always man. And, best of all, you achieved the look without bathing it in streaking grime and using filters on Instagram.

ooooh now this is neat, might as well practice brush control and paint thinning with this. Speaking of new techs i accidentally did a hilariously roundabout way of Slapchop that resulted in a candy tone Ultramarines. it really was a funny moment when i say "wow that worked?"

I don't know how: but seeing this style makes me feel like my hands have just gone through an afternoon of handling rusted steel bars. The style reminds me of what the junkyard in Thor Ragnarok looks like: once striking, noble colours that have not entirely deteriorated, but have clearly seen the elements for a decade long mission, and desperately needs a clean up by a Chapter Serf. I reckon painting a Sgt like this and having him stand in front of his new charges, all clad in clean red armour would be a badarse diorama.
Dark Angels next my man ! With all the clothes and ropes over the armor, will be nice to see how you approach that kind of models in this style. Awesome work as always

This really is still the only grim dark video I need to refer to. It’s just so good. I think I will revisit the McFarlane Primaris Space Marine I did when I got back into painting and see if I can make him look less like a Malibu Sunset Marine more like this Blood Angel. Haha.
Could you include what paints you use more often? As a novice it's very helpful to see what colors do what effects. For example, you don't mention what base or highlight color you use for the eyes.
Thank you, I have been taking more time painting and enjoying it, even though I batch paint, and this is very similiar to my paint technique for my salamanders, mine is just in reverse with green over a red/dark brown prime, chpping medium, green then chip the green, paint the rest of the minis base coats, then apply dunkelgrau, with a tweezer and sponge on the edges, go in and do details and chipping. Thx for the vid.

Great stuff. I like seeing this done with as few mediums as possible; no messy set up and teardown, no harsh chemicals, no airbrush.

To make the graphite stick you can lightly varnish between the layers with a matte spray varnish. You can do the same for pastels or pigment powder.

Thank you, I have been taking more time painting and enjoying it, even though I batch paint, and this is very similiar to my paint technique for my salamanders, mine is just in reverse with green over a red/dark brown prime, chpping medium, green then chip the green, paint the rest of the minis base coats, then apply dunkelgrau, with a tweezer and sponge on the edges, go in and do details and chipping. I did something similar to this with my 30k bangles and not adding metallic chipping still looks fire.
