    There was a White Dwarf issue way back in the RT days that named the 3 Imperial Dreadnought classes as Chuck (Contemptor), Eddy (Deredo) and Fury (Furibundus), so Furibundus was official. Also means the modern Contemptor and Deredeo dreads can happily be referred to as Chucks and Eddys 😁

      WD100 had the names as well as the first revision to dreadnought rules since the main rulebook. WD101 had rules for the first wraithlord, called spirit walker back then, and WD102 had rules for the eldar warwalker, both of which were basically dreadnoughts with different pilot configurations. I believe they were all reprinted in the Warhammer 40,000 Compendium.

      Yeah, or for a game with a few large mechs

    • @colbyboucher6391
      @colbyboucher6391 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      As a Battetech player I still laughed when I saw what the actual process was, it's kind of insane. Battletech's still exactly like that, just look at the rules for weapons that land multiple hits like missiles and shotguns:
      - Roll to-hit
      - Roll on the cluster table to see how many missiles / pellets or whatever actually landed
      - Group the individual bits by how much damage each "hit" is supposed to do
      - Roll hit locations for each of those
      - Roll crit location + internal crit location for each cluster you crit with
      And that's for one weapon on mechs which sometimes carry six or more. Missile boats are hell.
      I'm happy Alpha Strike exists.

    • @patinho5589
      @patinho5589 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love it.. you get to choose to try and get a hit by aiming roughly centrally.. but where it’s armoured.. or risk more with a targeted shot at a a weak point like weapon .. doesn’t take long at all when you know what you’re doing

    • @Bonesawisready926
      @Bonesawisready926 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure. I think you could reintegrate the mechanic of targeting vehicle weapons into the game, but something like that in a 40k RPG would be really fun.

The dreadnaught is armed with twin bolters on each hand, and this was back when an imperial guardsman could ride in one. I've stripped the paint and repainted this model 3 times now :) Currently in imperial guard colours. I wonder what 9th edition unit it could count as? An armoured sentinel?

    No idea why everyone hates them, this just has to be my alltime favorite dread design alongside the one from epic/space crusade. l really gotta get one of these at some point.
    I do have the chaos one and that sculpt is actually pretty good imo, the details really give it a lot more character, but well exactly that is kinda something loyalists always lacked so it's not really a fair comparison.
    Also on the name, these dreadnoughts were actually the OG contemptors, before they were reimagined by forgeworld. And even tho it's a bit far fetched you can kinda see the similarities in the overall design, it's a lot closer to this one than the classic box dread.
    (As a sidenote the afformentioned space crusade dreadnought was also the first to be called the dorito)

    Great to see you bring some more classic RT into your army. Although I imagined (from the thumb nail / title) that you'd do them as some Ad Mech Robot allies (RT model "counts as" Kastelan Robots).
    Also great to see you go through 2nd Ed Vehicle rules. I remember it well. 2nd Ed wasn't fast paced at all, but it was engrossing and a lot of fun. And more often than not could take a weekend to play.
    I'm fairly certain your 3 Marines also take D6 Str 10 hits with a minus 3 modifier from the explosion. I recall restless nights where my thoughts were plagued with worry that I'd placed my unit too close to my vehicle and tomorrow during my opponents turn it could all go [BoOm!] because 2nd Ed wasn't kind to vehicles. A good marksman with a Targetter could almost guarantee an explosion outcome meaning that you wanted to keep your units away from them (as opposed to using them for deployment and/or cover).

    I remember that vehicle targeting from way back when (I.E. 29-30 years ago). Though it came after Rogue Trader since that was late 1980's. We also learned that you can place that template anyway over the model template so placing it at an angle did wonders. But you ended up taking shots at it since for most hits would only destroy a section. Oh and if you think these Dread's were bad try looking at the robots from back then.

    It's worth noting perhaps that Rogue Trader went through 3 separate sets of rules for dreadnoughts, with the Vehicle Manual being the last and weirdest. If I recall correctly at least one of the others would be far more familiar to anyone that knows the 8th/9th edition dreadnought rules, with dreadnoughts having stats much closer to those of standard models.

    I still have six of those bad boys from back in the day. The one you have with a missile launcher is actually a Deredeo (Eddy) class dreadnought, I guess the one with the plasma gun could count as a Furibundus (Fury) class as they were equipped with a lascannon, or you could just say it is a Juggernaut (Jay) class dread.

    The dreads look neat in a derpy way but as you kept painting it I started making a connection with the squats and I think if they changed out the face plate for the one the infantry have and maybe make a drill available or something it would be an amazing squat dreadnaught

      They were Squat dreadnoughts back in Rogue Trader! Very few vehicles so Guard and Squats also got dreads, as well as Rhinos and Land Raiders.

    I never owned a dreadnought until recently. Lebiathan reminded me, that the old 2nd Edition Carnifex was one of the great iconics 40k ever had. So, I tried to get my hands on one. (Oh... and on Leviathan, of course. So looks like there is the first Space Marine Dreadnought in it, I will ever own.)
    But at least I'm considering to try to get a few of this older Rogue Trader Miniatures as well.

    I ended up ordering from Only Games a few days after I saw this video. Forgot to use the discount but emailed them saying I found them from you and they even replied back saying that was cool.
    Then the 5 day production window came and went (ordered on the 5th). Sent an email through their site asking for just an update a few days ago on the production and nothing for two more days until I got a notification it was being shipped out. But no direct communication. Hoping the sculpts/printing is well done at least. Ok with waiting for stuff, just want some updates or communication when there are delays.

    That vehicle manual you have there is about the 3rd major revision to the Rogue Trader ruleset. Chapter Approved made some changes to the rules, The Compendium and the Compilation made some major changes. The Vehicle Manual was just insanely complicated, I don't think anyone actually played using those rules much until the "2nd Edition" came out.

    I really enjoyed that level of complexity for shooting... but definitely only for a skirmish scale game :)

    Two different models of early dread there. The one with the short legs is Furibundus (Fury), the longer legs is a Deredeo (Eddy) pattern.
    I started 40k back in the RT era, my first dread was a Furibundus. I still have him. And yeah, he looks derpy next to the more modern models, but you gotta respect the ancient.

    I think you could probably make these dreads look a lot better with some kitbashing. The epic scale nights have a lot of armor and peg parts that could probably be grafted on by a careful hand to get a bulkier and more imposing model.

    As ridiculous as they might be, design-wise, it is a cool thought from a headcanon perspective to think that your Space Marines are still toting some old-school, Mark I, practically prototype Dreadnoughts that have survived years of battle to the point that they were never renovated or replaced. Maybe you could cool-ify them up some more by giving them some heavy damage scarring?

    Your two guys seem to have mixed up the torso/leg combos, too. You could buy the short legs with the short-wide torso, or the long legs with the tall-thin. Swapping them around gave you the option of the short, thin stumpy one and the giant-wide model. Really different silhouettes.

    My coworker used to live in the UK and has some white dwarfs from 1988. The dreadnought pilots were just regular dudes but the dreadnoughts could have neural links. The bond could become permanent and their want for combat would drive them to become mercenaries or marauders (assuming they lived long enough for that to happen).
