    Dude, this one is a classic--just what I was looking for after picking one of these (albeit a few years older) off the curb. I've found a real soft spot for small engines the last few years, and after a few folks started bringing me *their* little engines I figured it was worth going through your stuff again. Thanks again for the edumacation, homie.

    Great tip on the dipstick o-ring. I usually assume that the problem is an oil seal or lower gasket- especially on Tecumseh.

    This was excellent! Have the exact same mower that wouldn't start and was leaking gas out of the carburetor. Redid the carb following your other video and while the gas stopped leaking it still wouldn't start. This video did the trick a new ignition coil found on amazon and my mower is running like a champ...all in all less than $20 and a few hours checking things out, cleaning and repairing. Thank you so much!

    Just picked up I believe 1998 craftsman 6.0 mulcher 22",that 21" you just showed is pretty close to it. I found a carb for it on Ebay $13.99 free ship.A rebuild kit is $11.99,primer bulb is bad anyways.I filled it with gas today,thats when I found out carb is bad.Got gas in oil now and gas came out exhust,it never started,so that's possibly a good thing.Does have spark though.I like everything to work right before I sell it in my garage sale.Love your videos Don,you save us poor people a lot of money.Thank you very much!!

    If you drain the oil before you remove the cowl you will not have any spilling of oil when the dipstick tube pops off. Also I recommend putting the mower on two saw horses so it's up where you can work on iy easily and you can drain the oil from there as well. Also I would use some silicone sealant on the dipstick tube o-ring. Both inside and out. It doesn't take much and clean the surfaces well before applying.

    Awesome- thank you and I would not have known about the business card trick. Our 1998 Sears Craftsman with a B&S engine wouldn’t start this week and I’m hopeful it’s just the coil. I’m not ready to bid it farewell just yet.

    Instead of using vice grips or a second person to hold down the safety bar you can simply insert a nail in the linkage plate at the motor end of the cable where there's factory holes just for that purpose. You just need to press the metal plate where the cable attaches until the two holes line up then insert a nail to lock the kill switch in the run position. To stop the motor just pull out the nail.

    on the older Tec motors without the yoke holding the oil filler tube in the sump it's a good thing to drain some of the oil. at the same time a new $2 seal for the filler tube is in order....you got it apart so take care of the number one killer of Tec motors. you find so many of these with oil all over the top of the deck and NONE in the motor. you also find a bad dose of rod knock at the same time (G) I change the seals anually on older machines I maintain. cheap insurance.

    Great video. Thanks. But I am still stuck. Because of this video I replaced my ignition (I thought the spark was weak to none). My mower still won't start...occasionally tries to turn over. I recently put in fresh gas, a new spark plug, new air filter, NEW CARBURETOR, and checked the key wheel is intact. I checked the gap on the new plug. I have not changed the oil, but since it turns over I don't think that is needed.
    The control bar (for self-propel) seems to be working. I sprayed carb cleaner in to get a little boost, nothing. I believe I am getting compression - I pulled the spark plug and put a tissue in it's place; when I pulled the starter, the tissue flew out. any feedback would be appreciated.

    • @ussreeves
      @ussreeves 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alan Katzen when you pull the brake lever on the handle it not only releases the mechanical brake but open a switch to remove ground from that wire under the ignition coil. If that switch does not work or the wire is pinched and grounded all the time, you'll never get it to start.

    I wonder if you could find any older Tecumseh (lawnmower) engines with the flywheel magneto ignition on them, to show us how to repair it? Typical engine series: LAV30/35/40/50 (before 8/84), TVS75/90/105/120 (before 8/78), ECV100/120 (before 8/78, some models through 8/84) and TNT100/120 (before 8/78).

    hi dony
    i have same lawnmower just its 6.0 model it wont start untell i put some gas into the air filter and then after 30 second or so it shuts off by it self and wont start ..so what you think is the problem

  • @wcjcnc
    @wcjcnc 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I fixed the leak at the seam. Here's what you have to do. Using really coarse sand paper, sand the tank right on the seam ALL THE WAY AROUND THE TANK. Get two packs of JB Quick Weld epoxy. Start with one pack of the JB Quick Weld. Only use 1/3 of each tube at a time. Mix it together good and apply on the seam making sure it covers at least 1/8" on both sides of the seam. Go all the way around the tank. You can't just cover where the leak is because the leak will move to the end of the epoxy.

      It sounds as though your starter recoil assembly has gone bad. Although you can sometimes replace the clutch itself (It is found inside the engine cover, and is usually retained by a single screw in the center of the clutch) it is usually easier to replace the assembly itself, which is frequently retained to the engine cover by four screws. You shouldn't have any difficulty finding one online and installing it is fairly simple- there are videos on TH-cam that can walk you through the process should you need it. Hope this helps.

    How thick is your business card that you use setting the air gap between coil and flywheel? I have checked thickness on a few cards and paper stock and some are thin, some thick and a few in between.
    What is the tolerance +/- on the high side of the air gap? I imagine the low side is the flywheel crashing into the coil. The sound won't be as loud as a few CNC 5 axis machines that I have been around when guys have crashed them but the destruction will be the same except price wise haa

    • @ddd228
      @ddd228 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If during cold weather,it won't start and you have gas and spark,use a hair dryer on the INTAKE manifold.Not the carburetor. It will fire right up.Works for any gasoline powered engine,even nitro RC cars.
      Also,if you can remove the upper cowl/pull start mechanism,a 19mm socket on the flywheel nut with a corded power drill makes it easy!
      Oil change: Tip the mower towards to oil fill hole and catch 20 ounces of oil that comes out. Takes 20 ounces. 30 wt. oil.

    Hello Donboy, thank you for all the information, has helped me a ton! Could really use your feedback on this. I have a Briggs 6.0 Quantum engine that's hard to start. Runs perfect once going. Have done full rebuild of carb and 2x gaskets on primer housing. Fuel is like a fountain when primed. Regapped coil to flywheel .006. Still hard starts. Checked resistance on coil and getting 4.7xx - 4.9xx ohm resistance. I understand over 5.xxx is bad and 2.5xx is the sweet spot on this particular coil. Could coil be between weak and faulty causing difficult starts?

    you couldn't say"all" but "most". if you have an extra laying around,try it! but if ur gonna by one,get the model number and google and youtube it ti find what motor it has.(or take the model number to the parts store and pay way too much) ebay is a good place for that stuff,just make sure ur buying from a "top rated seller" so you know they aren't scamming
