Believe it or not, we had been trying to obtain a Plugin Prius since the spring of 2021. As soon as the latest version of the Prius Prime was announced, we put down deposits at three different Toyota Dealerships to try to get one. However, living in Utah (a non CARB) state, as of this date NO Prius Primes have been allocated to any local dealers. We were fortunate enough to locate a Wind Pearl White XSE Prius Prime Ltd. at Bighorn Toyota in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It was an easy five hour drive to drive over. I agree with almost of all of Kirk’s comments about the XSE Prius Prime. It is a bit expensive. Ours sold exactly at the window sticker MSRP, at almost the same price as his test model. We are not put off by the amount of hard plastic moldings in the interior. It is easier to keep clean than softer trims. Our previous 2014 Prius had lots of soft trim. It was a pain to keep clean. The sound level in the car is not too bad, but most of noise comes from the factory tires when driving on anything less than smooth paving. We drove a 2000 mile round trip to see the Solar Eclipse. It was absolutely a pleasure to drive. Now at home, we plug it in with the supplied level one charger. We see the gas station about once every six weeks or so. If we had to do it all over again, we wouldn’t change a thing. BTW, our iPhones wirelessly connect to Apple Car Play without any issues whatsoever. 😁
Similar story here. We ordered a 2022 Prime (a red one), and had to wait 21 months for delivery. But, we ended-up with the Pearl better actually and, it took us two weeks to realize, the car is not white. If you look really closely at the paint you'll see what I mean. After nine weeks and 1,250+ miles, there's still a third of the dealer tank left. We run in EV mode as much as possible because that's the cheapest approach for us. Love this car.
huh, i bought a 2013 chevy volt for 7k and modded it to have a solar roof and an extra 4kwh of battery for another 500$. getting 50-55miles of range. has twice the battery. its got about the same curb weight and slightly less hp out of the electric motors. idk if plug in people want to save money, this is the way i would go. my insurance is 21 bucks a month lol. saved 2k in gas my first year driving it. electric stuff basically doesnt break down and the motor actually protects the battery from the cold and over discharging on long drives. 10 kwh of battery though youre going to be charging and discharging the battery every day twice as much as an old volt.
@@vevenaneathna Huh, is right. What do you do when you run out of range on a road trip? Do you just park it in the sun for hours and hours? If you run out of range at sundown, do you just camp out for the night and hope the next day isn’t cloudy? The plugin Prius Prime is a Hybrid. Between the battery range and the fuel in the tank, it has well over 450 miles. More if much regenerated power is available. At home we just plug it in at night and run on pure EV power for almost all trips. We typically only visit the gas station around 6-8 weeks. I bought the 2024 Prius Prime XSE in red, have 3k miles on it and love it. I carefully compared it with the prius hybrid and glad I spent the extra money on the prime. It's easy to charge overnight in my garage and I'm consistently getting 40 miles of electric miles per charge. I love almost never needing to go to the gas station and the added cost to my monthly energy bill isn't very much. The car drives like a dream especially in electric mode, it just quietly glides along with power when you want it. I'm glad I'm not trying to drive with a light foot in order to get good gas miles as I would have if I bought the hybrid. The prime also feels a bit heavier than the hybrid which makes the steering feel a bit different. I highly recommend to go for the top of the line prime in order to get the better sound system if you enjoy music. All of the criticisms about this car such as, steering wheel position, rear view visibility, big front pillars, etc... I have gotten used to and do not think they are a big deal. Love the car...........................
The AC outlet in the hatch is not an option, neither is the one for the rear seats. It's standard. Also, both outlets are rated for 1,500 watts. Almost all other builders just offer 150 watts. Big, huge difference. Got our Prime nine weeks ago. Fast. Love it. Silent in EV Mode. !,200 miles on it so far. Still a third of the dealer tank onboard.
NGL, under 7 seconds for a prius is normal average car category, my tuscon hybrid was 6.8 and is plenty adequate. and it finally looks great. if i didnt buy my tesla last year, the prius non prime was on my consideration list, but at that time it was hard to even find one as they just started rolling out and i needed a new car asap.
The pure hybrid mode is ‘identical’ to the standard prius when the plugin battery is depleted. You were in some mode where it was pulling from the plugin battery. This is actually the most efficient solution for people who can’t charge often. You don’t want to blow through the battery all at once, you want to augment the hybrid system in these cases.
I bought my Red 2024 Prime XSE in January after ordering a 2023 car 6 months earlier. I bought it specifically because I am not ready to transition to a full EV. My choice of a PHEV or EV was simple. I generate excess home PV energy, which goes to the grid without compensation. I can recover some of that give away electricity by charging my Prius at home for my mostly in-town driving. To date, I have used about 1/4 of the original dealer tank of gas. I have had to purchase about 15 kW electricity. So far, I estimate total fuel usage cost has been less than $25. The Prius Prime MSRP was pricy. However, fuel cost savings should make the Prime a better choice over the regular hybrid after several years. I love the new Prius styling and its accoutrements over my previous 2014 Prius.
8:00 Regarding the EV/Hybrid mode options, I've got a 2022 Prius Prime. Any time I know my trip is going to be longer than the battery will last and especially if a portion of my trip will be on the interstate, I put it in hybrid mode for the fastest or most uphill parts of the trip. Higher speeds and uphill climbs use up the traction battery much faster, so when I'm on surface roads, going downhill or flat driving, that's when I get the best "band for the buck" out of the traction battery. If I know I can get there and back on all electric, then yes, I use the EV mode. I have never heard a compelling reason for using that battery charge mode. It is less efficient than just running the hybrid mode.
Why not test the SE for max. range? That's the value model. Most don't need the added equipment or bigger wheels of the XSE and XSE Premium. The hard plastics inside would be less objectionable in the lower priced SE.
I got my new red 2024 Prius Prime XSE Limited after waiting for about a year. Very happy with the car's performance. I was not able to get the solar panel option, but find the enhancements over the 2018 Prius Prime a nice change.
I switched from a Prius to a Genesis GV60 (full ev) and never looked back. The model I purchased was about 10k more than the Prius Prime but it smokes the Prius in every way. And you can actually get them! At least here in California.
I think i'd rather buy a used 22'-24' venza hybdrid. I know it's discontiued but even used the venza is such a damn good deal!Awd, nearly 550miles range, more space, nearly half the price, and has luxury features of a lexus.
I think we all know the Prius Prime is probably almost impossible to find, let alone at a decent price. To be fair, states that persecute motorists probably are better off having them anyway.
The Prime was definitely designed for a more EV only time, main thing is the transmission has an electric pump to circulate the CVT fluid all the time. The standard hybrids have that tied to the engine... But my old ford fusion hybrid could go up to 85MPH in EV mode (not for very long)
I think I would be more than happy with the 2025 Camry SE AWD that gets the better MPG, rides better, and is a better commuter and road trip car. The Camry is a volume hybrid were inventory is not a problem.
@@busterdouglasiii3838 The EPA rates the Prius XLE at 52 MPG avg, 52 City, and 52 Highway. Your 58 mpg is a joke mpg. Take your own advice and stop the lies.

On hybrid mode you can get more miles per gallon if you don't use ethanol in your gas tank and it won't gum up your engine as much with ethanol. I have an 2024 Prius Prime XSE Premium.
I've had the exact model (not solar) you demo'd for 6 months now. Driven about 10k. I agree with the volume knob. I find myself instinctively reaching for it as the toggle is kind of slow. Also, the skip track/channel up down is on the opposite side! You need two hands to operate audio controls. 1st world problems, but c'mon. Getting in and out isn't my favourite, especially wearing a suit. Vented seats aren't as affective as I thought they would be. But that is subjective. There's a lot of beeps and warnings. I'm slowly disabling more and more as time goes by. haha Bluetooth and Apple Carplay is 50/50. If it doesn't connect, hold down the power button and it will restart the infotainment, connects up after that. Cold weather impacts battery range. If you're using HVAC, your EV range will be significantly reduced. Otherwise, great car. Good power. Fun to drive. Quiet. Insanely good mileage. Highly recommend getting PPF for the front end. It's so low to the ground, it gets pummeled with rocks and debris on highways.
I wish Kirk spent more time in “hybrid mode “ Ive heard the Prime prioritizes electric only even in hybrid mode. I would like to know how good it is at it.
I have a 2023 Prius Prime XSE and it has the power rear hatch. I am having problems with that rear hatch and I wonder if others have been seeing the problem. The rear hatch itself has two buttons that are exposed when the hatch is open, close, and close and lock. The close button works fine, but the close and lock button fails to function properly about half the time. If I press that button it will beep once, and then (if it is going to work) it will beep a second time after a second or two. But sometimes it beeps the first time, sits there, and them beeps twice, telling me it is not going to close. Once it decides it is not going to close more attempts will fail the same way. I have to use the "close" button and then pull out the fob to lock the car. I have also had the hatch start to close and then stop, after I thought it was closing and had walked away. Then I come out of the store to find my car wide open, VERY disturbing. Has anyone else experience these problems?
Initially you need to connect your phone using wire, then after that you can use the wireless. Sometimes I have to force the connect wirelessly by going to the Bluetooth connect, choose your phone then connect.
Personally, I don’t like the idea of plugging in my vehicle. I’d prefer a PHEV over an EV but I’d rather just get a standard hybrid with normal gas savings.
You mean 10% above average fuel savings with a hybrid, hybrids are going to change the world with that much fuel savings. If only there were cars that didn't use petrol at all that would be something!!!!
I ordered an XSE Prime Premium last October (2023) in Canada. They said I might get it in early 2025(?) but they weren't sure. Sadly, we don't get the solar roof option in Canada as I guess Toyota feels that our perpetual winter negates this benefit. I did get a call to get a lesser model which was a refused sale, but I decided to wait for what I ordered and see what happens.
Kirk, We are primed to welcome Prime versions of the whole Toyota fleet. Let's hope the generously extended TNGA-C wheelbase Toyota chose for the Prius finds it way into the whole Corolla family. It is incomprehensible that a Corolla Cross CUV has less rear seat legroom than a sporty Prius . 🤨
@@KirkKreifels 'Strange' is a very generous word to describe Toyota's space deprived interiors. Just because 5'5" Akio Toyoda fits, does not mean a car is big enough. 🤣
Thanks for the video! If you park it in direct sunlight with 15 miles of EV range remaining and leave it one day, you see verified real range of at least 3 miles added? So when you come back to it, the car will have about 18 miles of EV range due to the solar panel and you can actually drive for that distance using EV mode only? I am interested in real world results and also if you could get a full charge if you left it in direct sunlight for 10 days, let’s say because you need to fly somewhere. So, you leave it in the airport parking lot. It would be really nice to come back to a full charge because of the solar panel! Also, NB makes a 99% heat rejection window tint, so I think that would pretty much take care of issues leaving the car in direct sunlight.
Just get a Camry. It is a better daily. Price Prius Prime $32,975-$39,670. Price 2025 Camry $28,400 - $36,125. The new Camry is better than the Prius Prime, cheaper and available at MSRP.

Currently trying to decide if we want to get my wife one of these, or a Kia Niro HEV, or the new Civic Hatch HEV when it drops. Choices, choices.
Primes are so hard to get rn, I had to get a 2023 Prius LE from carmax to hold me over while I wait.
It is less efficient than just running the hybrid mode.
i think this would be a contender for being crowned as the sexiest car ever created.
It looks a dodge dart
@@fallguy4209I think he’s joking, he must be.
I have a prius=Money saver
I have a Honda Clarity = even bigger money saver than $42K prius prime.
Most of the time, restarting the phone will clear up any Bluetooth connectivity issues. 😊
That Genesis will be smoking literally when it catches fire
I think i'd rather buy a used 22'-24' venza hybdrid. I know it's discontiued but even used the venza is such a damn good deal!Awd, nearly 550miles range, more space, nearly half the price, and has luxury features of a lexus.
Wow!!! That is some serious money!!! Expensive.
More expensive than a Model Y
Now I wish Toyota would now put a Prime drivetrain in a sienna for my big family. Don’t want a Grand Highlander…
I was hoping you would include the parking assist where it parks the car for you. I love my prius prime
I think we all know the Prius Prime is probably almost impossible to find, let alone at a decent price. To be fair, states that persecute motorists probably are better off having them anyway.
The markups at Toyota dealerships are epic
The Prime was definitely designed for a more EV only time, main thing is the transmission has an electric pump to circulate the CVT fluid all the time. The standard hybrids have that tied to the engine... But my old ford fusion hybrid could go up to 85MPH in EV mode (not for very long)
I think I would be more than happy with the 2025 Camry SE AWD that gets the better MPG, rides better, and is a better commuter and road trip car. The Camry is a volume hybrid were inventory is not a problem.
Wrong. My Prius 2024 XLE gets 58 mpg on average and there is no evidence that a 2025 Camry hybrid will do any better than 51 mpg. Stop with the lies.
@@busterdouglasiii3838 The EPA rates the Prius XLE at 52 MPG avg,
52 City, and 52 Highway. Your 58 mpg is a joke mpg. Take your own advice and stop the lies.
Trying to decide which version is better for the winter.
How's regenerative breaking feels like? Can you adjust resistance for it? Can you compare it to Tesla's regenerative breaking?
It feels no different than regular brakes which is nice
How low will the system allow the battery to go?
Nice looking & better performance! If they could drop the price on this below $40k, they would sell like hotcakes! But I don't think they can keep up with demand on any model right now.
This is a production vehicle, there is nothing gimmicky about it.
Italy here!Got mine on last december!Active version here, like LE on north american continent! But with infotaiment display like yours!😉Great car!In EV mode from 100%to 30% capacity of the battery, when the system put you anyway in HV mode,i can go 90 km(55 miles) only in electric!Toyota hybrid synergy drive(HDS) is unbeatable!Case closed!🫵🙌❤
What a time to release a Prius video when the Civic hybrid is out. 😂 I LOVE the Prius, but the Civic sedan in that light blue color is just too nice. A close call, but I like the new Civic a tad better.
I'm slowly disabling more and more as time goes by. haha
Bluetooth and Apple Carplay is 50/50.
It's as efficient as a non Prime Prius when in hybrid mode. Possibly even more efficient.
@@KirkKreifels will it drag the battery down about the same as EV mode? Assuming you don’t do rapid acceleration.
@@KirkKreifelsWill you been doing real mpg test for the Prime base model?
Great where do I get one?
Hey thanks for the nice quick review. Would you mind mentioning your height please? Wanna know how tall people fit in this car. Thanks
Just get the Camry hybrid.
Short answer: yes
You can get a 2025 hybrid Camry (50 MPG) for around 30K. Why would you pay 40K for less car?
And awd
Its an awesome car, just dont know why they make these in huge supply
Initially you need to connect your phone using wire, then after that you can use the wireless. Sometimes I have to force the connect wirelessly by going to the Bluetooth connect, choose your phone then connect.
Toyota systems give me the hardest time with my Pixel phones.
@@KirkKreifels I see, I have the S24 Ultra and before the the Note 10+. The Ultra seems to work much better, maybe because it's much faster.
If only there were cars that didn't use petrol at all that would be something!!!!
the remedy for the recall (rear doors) of some prius trims like mine is available in the third quarter of this year.
Yep. Toyota's packaging is strange on many of their TNGA vehicles including trucks. The sienna is much tighter than it used to be for example.
@@KirkKreifels 'Strange' is a very generous word to describe Toyota's space deprived interiors. Just because 5'5" Akio Toyoda fits, does not mean a car is big enough. 🤣
They need to do something about that gauge cluster being so high.
It sounds like you'd go, if you had to, buy the Outlander. Have you reviewed one?
Of course it'll be an amazing daily driver, 40 miles EV range would be more than enough for the vast majority of people.
Toyota needs to bring back the Prius V model but as an AWD plug-in model.
I have one like this with the solar panels order back September and I am still waiting for it!!
We ordered our Prime (a 2022 model), in 2022. Twenty one months later our 2024 finally landed.
@@TomLawlor-iq6gm what state did you order your car?
@@dls7705 Hi, we are in Eastern Canada. It's our third Prius but first PHEV. Gas here is around $7.00 CAD a gallon. So, we've been running the new car on battery as much as possible. Have had it for more than two months now and there's one third of the dealer's tank left after 1,250 miles !
Our dealer told us when we finally collected the Prius in March that if we ordered one on that day, the wait would be three years. Not sure if they were kidding or not.
I hope you like the 2024 better 2022 prise! I hope to get solar roof ,I i s/e southeast area and I gave them the $ to get !we will see !!lol
@Kirk-how many miles pure EV ONLY? My '17 got 30 above 80F,26-28 below 80F

Kirk, what was the highest MPG you achieved for City/Highway/Combined?
59mpg mainly city up to 60mph. After 60mph, mpg starts falling. Also I'm in 75-90 degree weather which helps.
I would never buy a Hybrid car without the Plugin

They should put a volume knob on the steering wheel.
4:12 i wonder how many people will get these mixed up...😅
The volume knob on the right side is so annoying.
The red accent should have also been on the door armrest
I have 2 takeaways from this 1 i can't wait to see the Camry prime and 2 if this is 42k .... I don't wanna see what they're gonna charge for The Camry
A fully loaded Camry prime would be close to 55k for sure.
Camry EV could come instead of prime.
Did they fix the rain water leaking problems of the backdoor handles?????
So you decided against getting one. Bummer, but understandable. What's the plan now for a new vehicle? Just holding off for now?
Yeah holding off.. don't need a new car right now. Need to save for a house if the market ever returns
@@KirkKreifels Totally understand, man. Good luck with it all. 🤘
High wages for all the component manufactures and really high wages for essemply will drive the cost sky high I guess.
My 2012 CT had power driver & manual passenger. That’s just how low spec cars are. At least with the UX you get power driver& passenger. They need to keep some brand differentiation. No surprise there.
My dream car
Now we just need a GR Prius
Thank you for mentioning the volume knob, my biggest irritation on the vehicle, otherwise I'm a fan. The worst part: it's a design choice, the right hand drive models have the knob on the left side. I hope they fix this in a future update.
With 7 inch ground clearance yes
That costs a lot of money WOW !!
Rav 4 prime i do 5 seconds 0-60. Definitely a big spread here.

Does Toyota solve the recall problem?
Rear seat comfort is not good for adults, better options are out there for lower price
