I have a 2021 Prius Prime and while the styling is good compared to previous it's not a 2023 Prius Prime. All that being said, I don't think I could go to back to an all ICE or all EV vehicle. Not having to fill your gas tank but once a month or less is soooooo nice. Yet, not having range anxiety either is perfect. It truly is THE best car. Not a giant battery that will take years to offset the carbon emissions created in the process of making the battery and not the enormous amount of greenhouse gases created by driving on gas all the time. When driving on battery 99% of the time AND paired with solar panels and you'll be zero carbon footprint in NO time at all compared to an all electric car with it's giant battery that requires a mountain of minerals to make.
I'm happy hybrids don't need to be slow anymore. Around 80-90 more horsepower over the Corolla Hybrid and a good bit more efficient to boot. A plug-in hybrid is 100% the logical next step. Best of both worlds.
I watch the videos no matter what the vehicle is. Really enjoy the content. The one thing that always sticks out to me is does Ryan know how hard most of these cars and trucks are to actually find in stock or at a dealer even willing to order? I live in Dallas and the dealers are really only full of F-150 models, VW ID.4 models and Jeep Gladiators. Every other unit is really just not available. If you do find one, they are still marked up. I actually looked at a Toyota dealer and a Chevrolet dealer with $5-$6k in add-on stickers.
Our videos have a shelf life of at least 1-2 years. Obviously availability will vary dramatically over that timeline. So we avoid talking about since it vary dramatically.
@@jamesh1641 Sorry to hear that. I ordered my vehicle to exactly how I wanted it at MSRP... but the catch is still a long wait, in my case, 7 months. I'm not saying you fall into this category, but most folks I know here in DFW just don't have the patience to wait for what they want.

As a Rav4 Prime owner I look forward to getting one of these as well. I have one on order and after I take delivery on it I'll probably sell the Rav4 and get a Tacoma or something.
I wish Toyota offered more PHEVs. It's this and the RAV4. I do think Toyota's strategy of hybridizing more of their lineup is more meaninful for reducing emissions than other automakers that make a few BEVs, but are still largely selling ICE vehicles. PHEV is the logical next step. Most people could utilize the EV driving mode for the vast majority of their driving without any impact to their existing lifestyle or driving habits.
Exterior design is awesome. Toyota needs to take cues from the likes of Peugeot 3008 and Hyundai Tucson for the interior design. So maybe wait for the next facelift.
Looks like removed the “heads up” display. And when move so many controls to “touch screen” actually can be more dangerous as Requires Eyes for hand position unlike touch location with push buttons/toggles.
It’s a nice car with a smaller carbon footprint, which could help start to sway certain gas powered enthusiasts to start considering it which add more people to the hybrid train. They have other budget options..
Humm, Get one. In the five months we've owned ours, we have driven close to 5,000 miles now. On LESS than two tanks of gas. We got a great break. Regular gas here is "down" $6.61 a gallon. Our 2024 Prime costs under $2.00 to charge and goes almost 100Km on battery power. That's around 1/4 the cost of gas to drive the same distance.
I would LOVE to see the total elimination of stealerships. Why don’t vehicle manufacturers just decide to go direct to consumers, and just built service centers? Dealers are bad for business, most are overpriced, huge markups, many have been caught defrauding customers, and the list goes on. Vehicle manufactures should go direct to consumer and eliminate the middle man. That would make their vehicles more affordable and accessible to most middle class Americans…
I thought that they didn’t offer AWD because there is a larger battery on the Prime. Not about or related to maximizing efficiency. An AWD version of this would sell out so fast!
I got on the list for a 2024 Prius Prime in Montreal and I will be waiting 12-18 months. I really wish they could make more of these, but I think that they are only going to push out ~15,000 of these in 2024.
Seems like this in a Rav4 version makes way more sense. Can't put a bike or baby seat in it and likely has no spare. To me, all of these should be able to operate as a short term generator for your house. Enough to keep your frig running and a few smaller items.
It would be a great buy if you could actually get one, and for those few who can find one, it would be great it there wasn't a $25,000 markup slapped onto it.
I like it but after being in one its pretty much a coupe. You gotta have short people sitting i the back. As in less than 5’9 cause thats how tall I am and my head was touching the roof. Upfront was better but Im not too sure how well someone 6ft and up would do.
Only if Prime would cost same as non plug in hybrid, than it will make sense to buy one. I’m paying 20 c per kw for electricity. It’s coming out almost the same as regular Prius with gas $3.80 per gallon. Don’t be fooled by 110 mpge. It’s only 75. Just count by your self, what you pay for electric and gas and what is consumption of your plug in car. My mpg over years gen 4 Prius over 58, manual calculated
There's no God Dammed issue. We have a 2024. No GD issue. With all the wheel and seat adjustments anyone can find a position. Most of the slobs complaining have the seat back reclined like a dentists chair. FFS's. Sit up. We see ALL of the dash.
I don’t have anything against EVs, they just don’t work for my driving requirements. However this is a pretty cool setup with PHEV. If they made a PHEV version of the BZ4x/Soltera, I’d be all about it. The front drive only with minimal ground clearance, just doesn’t fit what I need. Nice car though.

Yes difference buyer. I asked my wife if she wants a Lexus NX hybrid or Tesla MYLR. She chose the Lexus. Long story short, wrote a $52k check in April on the Lexus.
My wish would be for a plug-in hybrid, with its performance advantages, to offer the ability to *fully* recharge itself while driving (like a hybrid). I guess that might take another few years - if at all - for technology to allow that.
I’ve heard a lot of reviews mention the digital gauge cluster being obstructed however, what many in the States fail to realize is this is a JAPANESE vehicle made for the demographic of Japan whose height is much smaller than Americans. Obviously, this isn’t an excuse for poor design but something to keep in mind.
the people complaining about the gauge cluster being obstructed didn't take 5 min to adjust their seat & steer wheel position. I've been driving the new prius for 6 months and have never once had an issue with the gauge cluster
I would probably prefer to go with the "regular" Prius with AWD over the Prime. I don't really know how much value that 40-ish miles of all-electric range is going to help anyone -- PHEV prices are usually rather insanely higher than "regular" hybrids, so you've got to drive a LOT of all-electric miles to save enough to cover the initial cost. Yeah, yeah, greenhouse gases and all that, but if you look just a little bit beyond the end of your nose, you might find that billions of people on this planet aren't going to "go electric" within decades, and "industry" is nearly LAUGHING at how the commercial world remains deeply entrenched in the fossil-fueled world. So, perhaps when you see truckloads of Tesla vehicles moving along freeways near you, powered by that so-called "Tesla Semi" truck, then that might show some commitment towards reducing our greenhouse gas emissions beyond just "selling more cars."
That "40-ish miles of EV..............we have 6,000-Km (3,750m), of EV driving on our 2024 Prime. In four months. We have purchased 1/2 tank so far. Lots of value............................
Car looks and performs great. Having a mode that uses the gasoline engine to charge the battery is the dumbest thing Toyota has ever done. News flash its more efficient to just use the ICE engine to drive the car than convert the mechanical energy to electricity to chemical energy and back to mechanical energy. I know the engineers couldn't possibly be this stupid, so it must have been the consumers that demanded this clown mode. 😂
What if you were on a long road trip, battery is depleted and you are approaching a mountainous stretch with high passes and you want the extra power for that. If you knew how many miles at highway speed you needed to charge the battery fully, you could plan ahead for the passes.
@@alsheremeta The engine by itself is more than sufficient to get you up any reasonable grade that passenger cars are expected to climb. Running the engine to charge the battery up is less efficient than just using the engine.
My mom has one and its hella fun to drive daily, excellent car
@@drivingsports makes sense. We can dream at least.
@@seiph80 thank you for your note. Do hope all goes to plan. Unless you have prepaid the purchase, the dealer still has market pricing power over you even if it’s an order.
As a Rav4 Prime owner I look forward to getting one of these as well. I have one on order and after I take delivery on it I'll probably sell the Rav4 and get a Tacoma or something.
buy eav 4 hybredd
I wish Toyota offered more PHEVs. It's this and the RAV4. I do think Toyota's strategy of hybridizing more of their lineup is more meaninful for reducing emissions than other automakers that make a few BEVs, but are still largely selling ICE vehicles. PHEV is the logical next step. Most people could utilize the EV driving mode for the vast majority of their driving without any impact to their existing lifestyle or driving habits.
You, and Toyota have hit the nail, right on the head. Can't, .....wait..........for the next hammer swing.
YOu can adjust the seat height also to help look over the steering wheel. I am 6' and have no problem seeing the cluster.

Best reviews. Thanks 👍
The best presentation of Prius yet😊
very detailed review. what was your observed mpg when not in electric only mode?
very detailed review
Best review of the Prius Prime !!
Exterior design is awesome. Toyota needs to take cues from the likes of Peugeot 3008 and Hyundai Tucson for the interior design. So maybe wait for the next facelift.
seeing quite a few of these in Japan, they are everywhere and look good
They need a “yoke style” steering wheel for that heads up display.
Looks like removed the “heads up” display. And when move so many controls to “touch screen” actually can be more dangerous as Requires Eyes for hand position unlike touch location with push buttons/toggles.
Dang, was looking forward to seeing you take this on the off-road course! 😂
If only they made it AWD!
43K to save some fuel? Gimme a break
It’s a nice car and has good power, it’s more than just an eco a to b
It’s a nice car with a smaller carbon footprint, which could help start to sway certain gas powered enthusiasts to start considering it which add more people to the hybrid train. They have other budget options..
Humm,
Get one.
I really wish the RAV4 Prime was easily available at every dealership. It sure seems like the perfect vehicle for me.
got some for 20k over sticker.
I’m not paying 5k over msrp bc “Market adjustments.”
They can kiss it.
Looked at one while at a Toyota dealer. Looks really good, can’t believe there is market adjustment in new Priuses priuii?
MARK UP MASTER RACE
STICKER PRICE PEASANTS NEED NOT APPLY. Johnny Guest and the rest of his peasant family can stay at home.
I thought that they didn’t offer AWD because there is a larger battery on the Prime. Not about or related to maximizing efficiency. An AWD version of this would sell out so fast!
Nevermind BEVs for Toyota. Just make everything prime.
This is my dream car right now besides a supercar
Could you buy the XSE and install the SE wheels?
Yes.
What’s a great review ❤
I got on the list for a 2024 Prius Prime in Montreal and I will be waiting 12-18 months. I really wish they could make more of these, but I think that they are only going to push out ~15,000 of these in 2024.
We waited 21 months for our 2024 Prime. Love it. These extraordinarily long lead times must be really hurting sales. We had actually ordered a 2022 !

Seems like this in a Rav4 version makes way more sense. Can't put a bike or baby seat in it and likely has no spare. To me, all of these should be able to operate as a short term generator for your house. Enough to keep your frig running and a few smaller items.
Our 2024 Prime has two 1,500 watt AC outlets. Either one could run our fridge and freezer for days if it came to that.
18:33 Well that's stupid. I don't want/need some 'eyeball' scanner to spy on me like that.
Very well said at the end
Nice car, but 43k for a Prius? Holy Crap.
Maybe a flat top steering wheel would fix the gauge issue.
There's no God Dammed issue. We have a 2024. No GD issue. With all the wheel and seat adjustments anyone can find a position. Most of the slobs complaining have the seat back reclined like a dentists chair. FFS's. Sit up. We see ALL of the dash.
my rav4 prime is amazing. I get around 45 mpg!!! a lot of low speed driving around 60 mph avg... this is the way to go for the next 5 years easy.

The PHEV version of the bZ4X is called RAV4. It also has more cargo space without the sloping rear and you get a rear wiper.
@@default7950 I’ve ridden in RAV4s before. Not the PHEV version but the NA version. I’m assuming the PHEV version would be identical other than the drivetrain, so no thanks. Those are trash.
Indeed. I mean definitely a sweet spot
Kinda waiting on Lexus variants with the same powertrain.
Lexus NX
I want one but I know it’ll be hard to find and when I do find one it’ll cost an extra $10k.
I would get one for commuting… if only I could find one at the dealership lol
Yeah, but none are available for a test drive and dealers asking for at least 20% percent markup price.
Now do an offroad video with the Prius!
5:01 YES I fully agree 100%. I went and sat in a new prius while waiting for my 2017 camry to be serviced. I was very disappointed that I could not adjust the wheel without it blocking the gauges! 5’8” here.
Nonsense,
I'm 5' 11", my wife is 5" 6", neither of us has an issue seeing the gauge cluster. Raise the seat, push IN the telescoping wheel a little bit. And, for fuck's sake, straighten the seat back, it's not a beach chair.
Thank you, Toyota, for removing the ugly factor penalty, for having to own and drive a Prius.
Why would you pick this over Model 3? Same price.
Different buyer. This is for folks that can’t go all-in on electric only.
@@drivingsports Ah yes, if you live in an apartment or something. Makes sense. Although I know many folks that are keeping a Tesla in an apartment and charge it at the supercharger once a week. Nevertheless, if Tesla ever gets to the $25K car they’re aiming for, it’s going to kill the market for a lot of cars.

$44K way overpriced. I’d get a hybrid Highlander for may be a top trim
My wish would be for a plug-in hybrid, with its performance advantages, to offer the ability to *fully* recharge itself while driving (like a hybrid). I guess that might take another few years - if at all - for technology to allow that.
Charge Mode can do that.
🤦 someone needs a physics class.

Yes but a more generic adaptation of the design.
Would be interesting if they offered the Prius in a manual like the CRZ.

I thought these didn't even do Level 2 charging.
It does, but it’s quite slow at like 3.5kw max. I think the prior Prime had a 7.7kw level 2 charge rate.
Fake leather?
Impossible to find
It would make sense on a car with a very small range extender engine that couldn't push you up a hill by itself, but not on this car. You're just trading efficiency for entertainment.
if you haven't heard of the BMW i3 Range Extender you're in for a shock
@@chri5jame5 Yes I have heard of the BMW i3 range extender... Not sure how that has anything to do with a driving mode on a Toyota Prius but sure.

Nope. BMW M3 is the ultimate commuter car, plus Jeremy Clarkson proved years ago using science that a M3 gets better fuel mileage than a Prius.
Prius Prime doesn’t use any gas on a normal commute making the Clarkson test moot.
