that is a connector for ether injection (starting fluid). typically only used in extremely cold climates like Canada and Alaska when its 0*F or colder.
+ethan trashedteg i did notice that after installing the larger intermediate/y pipe, the pyrometer moves alot faster. Probably because the exhaust is flowing alot faster. If i stomp on it up a hill, i just barely break 1100 degrees, and it takes a little while to get there.
I agree with Robert Taylor’s comment. The soup bowl was given that nickname through the years… But the actual technical name is called a Helmholtz Resonator. Cutting it off won’t help in Peformance… it was designed to dissipate and expend harmonic pulse waves from the engine… cutting it off will only allow less air in. The real problem with this air cleaner is the restriction Plate…that needs to be cut off. It was designed to restrict airflow to damp in intake noise… But in the meantime it doesn’t allow The engine to breathe.

@@jeremiah6081 ok, is there anything else i can do to free up some power left on the table? Would straight piping the exhaust help with performance? My muffler is starting to flake a bit and should be replaced. Would be nice to hit 60 faster than “eventually”
+ethan trashedteg not really. My exhaust temperature goes up a bit, but my coolant temperature doesn't really. Not even when it's warm. I towed about 10k pounds with it once and did good, but i wasn't in a hurry. I haul scrap metal, lawn equipment and other things regularly.
All you’re doing is sucking hot air though.. i just added a tube to mine from the cleaner to the grill for fresh cool air.. my 91 7.3 crew cab nets around 22mpg average
Not really a good idea. The thing your calling a silencer cone is to help with noise but it is also made for improving air velocity into your engine. It's like adding length to an intake runner. It helps streamline air into your engine. Also engines never improve hp when you give the motor hot air after the radiator instead of before it like the stock air intake did. It's best to just use a high flow filter or reroute the intake plumbing to increase flow of air before radiator.
Robert Taylor the idea with that cone increasing velocity by straightening out the air flow would work, if it weren't for the fact that it necked down to such a small opening, after the stock intake tube inlet already choked it some. This is just a quick down and dirty and free mod. It did work just a little bit. Started up a little easier, smoked a little less, and better throttle response. If i were to have done an A+ job, i would have bought and actual intake manifold hat and intake tubing routed to somewhere cooler and a little less dusty than just on top of the engine, like i will be doing on my one project. Like i said, this is just a down, dirty and free mod. Didn't make a fire breather out of the engine, but definitely helped a little bit.
What’s the small hose that’s coming off the side of the intake housing?
Hello I was wondering what is the little Schrader valve there for on the lid? thanks for any input

There are idi guys who will pay you a decent buck for an air cleaner that isn’t rusted out!
Yea, this one had zero rust
the exact same part can be found on the 80s international trucks. i have an 89 with a pristine one
I've got egt gague but haven't installed it yet

Roy Fabian I'm concerned about if someone turned mine up before I got it
+ethan trashedteg do it ASAP. Glad i did it on mine

I’m looking at my 7.3 air cleaner 🤔 which part is the restriction plate
@@mikecorleone6797
The curved plate that sits right in front of the air intake moulding
@@jeremiah6081 mine doesn’t have that plate 🤔 91 f350. But i do have the soup bowl.

do you have any concerns about it pulling in the hot air around the motor? my truck starts to get warm pull a trailer up hill

22 mph.. I don't think so

Roy Fabian could you make the cone that you cut out into a velocity stack? It would help the improve the Reynolds Number.
