    "max" AC usually means it turns it to recirculate

    • @Deftonesdsm
      @Deftonesdsm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +139

      Exactly. On fords it just means recirculate cabin air. You should be on max a/c all times unless u want fresh air. But it doesn't effect the power loss or anything

      @@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X if you're running the AC for a while the cabin air is gonna be colder than the air outside the truck. So running Max AC is gonna allow you to get air that's a bit colder than air coming out of the regular AC setting. The cabin air in this case is also gonna be less humid since it was already air conditioned, so Max AC will technically be more efficient too.

    • @Deftonesdsm
      @Deftonesdsm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      @@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X well when its 110°F heat index you want to cool the cool air in the cab not the hot humid air outside for a more comfortable cab. Why would you want more humid air coming in? Also it can make the a/c work harder as the evaporator is constantly fighting the heat amd humidity. I can get 37°F out of my vents on recirculate on a 90°F air temp(100+°F heat index) day. So theoretically uses less power in recirculate on "MAX a/c" on really hot days but regularly doesn't effect mpg etc. I also slightly overcharge mine so on hwy its ice cold. But im EPA hvac certified

    A/C (or economy A/C): normal air conditioning, taking air from the oustide of the cab/car
    MAX A/C (A/C): its exactly the same, but the system recirculates air from the inside of the cab/car.
    On a very hot day, the proper way of using the system is first, select the "normal" A/C. After 10-15 mins and once the air is cold, select "MAX A/C", as it recirculates and re-uses air from the inside (colder than outside). This is, supposedly, more efficient and it reduces the cycles of the A/C compresor, meaning better MPG and colder air.

    3 point seatbelts became federally mandated in 1973. And the 55 highlighted speedometer was federally mandated as well. When there was the national 55 mph speed limit the govt required all speedometers to highlight 55 and they could not show any faster than 85. Which is why there were SVT Mustangs which we all knew could do 130 with 85 mph factory speedometers in the 80s.

      I’m an engineering major in college right now and I can tell you exactly why this happens. Computers make it so easy to make an efficient and powerful engine, because as long as the sensors are reading right, the engine will work great. That’s no surprise.
      But when it comes to vehicle longevity? Oh man. I’m starting to think that the whole “planned obsolescence” nonsense is starting to become true. Having a lifespan on a vehicle is important from a design perspective- it gives everyone some standard or goal to meet- but setting the goalposts as low as 100k / 150k miles is starting to get annoying. I may be no mechanic like yourself, but I know crap when I see it.
      If I could go back to when I was 16 or so and look at the vehicles I could’ve owned- I should’ve swallowed my pride and gotten a new civic, or a Toyota UZ powered SUV from the early 2000’s. In the long run, it would’ve saved me money.

    I'm an autobody guy. I can definitively tell you, MAX A/C = recirculate, so the old vehicles pre- 2000's would draw the air from the cowl panel ( bottom of the windshield behind the hood ) normal air is drawn in through the cowl vents and sucked through either the heater core in the dash, OR the A/C condenser also in the dash ( wich is basically an oil cooler that has a/c refrigerant in it instead of motor oil, same exact part though just different use case ) when you switch to MAX A/C it closes a plastic flap that seals off the cowl induction, and forces the air to be sucked into the A/C condenser inside your dash from air that's already inside your vehicle, thus instead of cooling outside air its cooling off the already cool air inside making it EXTRA cold. Important note about this * certain companies such as Chrysler/ Mercedes Benz/ and some others used Vacuum powered door flapper controls, when the rubber tubing dry rots and cracks from old age it can no longer suck hard enough to pull the door flaps closed, so your vehicle will permanently be stuck in cowl feed mode. Sucking air in from outside, wich means in the winter your heat will never feel hot in your old ass truck lol. I believe Chevrolet trucks had a cable for the door, like a hood release latch set up, not sure if fords had the air actuated ones like Chrysler Motors trucks D/W power wagon series.

    The trick to driving an old Diesel like that long distance without getting a headache is to cruise at your own comfortable pace, low and slow, which is often times much slower than the prevailing speeds. I drove 3+ hours to and from school every week in my E350 7.3 maintaining about 58 mph, mainly for fuel efficiency. Let people pass you, you’ll get there.
    Also, stuffing the passenger footwell with a big wad of plastic, foam, or some other sound absorbent material helps a LOT!

    I can tell you stories about old idi trucks, and I'm not even a boomer, I just have spent a lot of time around them. Imagine if you had a 4x4 truck, put it in 4 low and its like a bull dozer. You can stand on the brake pedal all day and it won't stop. I still have my 1992 7.3 idi, had it since 2005 and used to have a debris hauling and landscaping business. That thing has towed or hauled everything imaginable. As long as you aren't in a hurry to get anywhere, they are a great truck to drive.

    my Cherokee has a "max AC" setting, which according to the owners manual: "max air conditioning setting is used when maximum fuel efficiency is desired, yet while still allowing the climate to be cooled" which as far as I am aware, means that the compressor just cycles on and off rather than just being always on.

    10:15 off topic.... but a cool bit of history....
    .
    buicks "dyna-ride" option ment the shocks and springs.... AS WELL as the seat foam was "customized" to the car.... to give the softest ride possible
    so YES!!!..... the seat springs ARE part of the suspension lol.
    .
    and on anything with a "body on true frame"..... their are rubber mounts between the cab and frame
    which was also "custom tuned" on the old buicks
    .
    these mounts are set up with one piece of rubber on top.... and a 2nd one on bottom.
    so it would adsorb shocks in both up AND down

    There are 2 ways to roll coal in modern diesels. Remove the throttle timer (there is up to a 5 second delay between pressing the pedal and engine responding), then there is over fueling the turbo. The first is harmless.
