Its a mystery! Losing antifreeze on a 2006 Duramax with no external leaks!

Todays video was recorded this summer and I wanted to wait until I get the truck repaired before I posted this because I knew it would be several months before I could get to the rest of the series. Customer was complaining of losing antifreeze but had no external leaks at all. We go through all the checks that I usually go through to diagnose a problem like this. This was a 2006 Duramax LBZ.
I had a tiny hole on the hose that goes to/from the turbo that took me for ever to find.
This 2006 makes me really, and I mean REALLY appreciate my '05 at 741k miles only things changes that touch the block/heads are injectors at 610k and water pumps about every 200k. Compression is great, internals look good, needed a wiring harness "refurb" but the basic overal drivetrain is fine (transfer case is the exception with a new aluminum housing) CP3 is still original. Oh, and glow plugs just for fun.
That’s impressive! I have one customer with an 08 that has 430000 miles on it with nothing done. Should be good for another 300,000 then!😀
Just got an lb7 within 2 days I've went through 1 gallon, the truck runs great tho, not in exhaust & no visible leaks, not in oil either. Thoughts?
I was losing a little coolant and running warmer than normal for 50k miles on my 550k LBZ, having head gaskets sorted now. The Dmax with run with bad gaskets for a long time.
Thermostat housing attaches to heads. That’s where mine was leaking, and I really don’t see anyone talk about it. Really need a camera to see it behind the accessory brackets.
I actually have not ever seen them leak there! Never would’ve thought about it!
@@hrdiesel My driver side was leaking good. After taking everything off my passenger side was also leaking but would not have been noticeable. Everything has to come off to change them but mine were completely worn out. Gaskets were cheap
@@hrdieselthank you by the way for making videos. I have learned a ton about these trucks from TH-cam
My 05 has recently started getting the pressurized upper radiator hose. And loosing coolant out of the overflow. Hose is not rock hard just firm. But has no overheating. no discoloration of coolant reservoir. Oil looks good. Coolant looks good. No leaks that im aware of .any thoughts. Thanks
In my experience that has usually pointed towards a blown head gasket or a cracked head. 95% of them are a blown head gasket. I always have the heads checked and planed just to make sure.
Head gaskets.
My lb7 was doing the same and I'm now changing out the head gaskets.
Mine is doing the same thing. About to do head gaskets soon
It’s going to be pressurized when it’s warmed up. It goes up to 15 psi.
I chased mine for awhile, ended up being heater Inlet hoses on the passenger firewall
Were you also getting pressure on top hose? I found a leak on flywheel housing cover gasket on my lml. Fixed it but still losing coolant and building pressure
I have a 2005 GMC Sierra w/Duramax and a coolant leak. Leak is coming from the rear of the engine, in the space just above the yoke of the drive shaft, dripping on the drive shaft and down onto the bell housing. It looks like the leak is coming from that 22mm (I think) flat bolt. Not sure what that bolt is. However in your video, you said a leak in this area could actually be coming from the water pump. I do not see any leak around the water pump or the weep hole. How would the coolant get to that area if the leak was from the water pump. Thank you for your help.
I don’t remember how I worded it for sure. But back in that area is a pipe that comes off of the water pump and runs along to the back into the oil cooler. It’s not actually the water pump itself, but a pipe that connects to the water pump. I would start looking at the oil cooler and see if you can figure out if it’s coming out of there or not. There is also also a possibility that you have a leaking hose up on the Turbo and it could be running Down off of the back of the engine
Is there one series of the Duramax that is worse than others as far as blowing head gaskets? My Niece has an '02 LB7 version with about 275k on it and we're pretty sure she has a blown head gasket. She's blown nearly every cooling system hose on it and they have even replaced the radiator which was NOT leaking which I though was stupid and not they are doing the de-gas tank and cap......I dunno why they just didn't take it to a pro for like you for a proper diagnosis instead of just throwing parts at it.....
I have seen it on pretty much every series unfortunately. A lot less on the LB7 and I think that’s because we don’t have a ton of those in our area. Unfortunately with aluminum heads on a cast iron block it’s bound to happen.
@@hrdiesel Thanks. My Niece has gotten back big time into her barrel racing and now has a 3 horse gooseneck trailer with tack room and living quarters so she needs at least a 3/4 ton truck. She's had her '02 Silverado 2500 (I believe HD) crew cab 4x4 for about a year and she's sunk a lot of $$ into it since day 1.
What is the ticking I hear on the passenger side of this truck? My truck has the same exact noise
The Duramax is pretty famous for that. It’s usually an injector. Or a combination of valve lash adjustments, along with an injector.
@@hrdiesel I’m pretty sure mine is an injector because it started after I got diesel at a caseys. The engine was chattering like normal then started having a tick
Also my truck never loses coolant but my hose gets pretty firm after driving it hard, never holds pressure overnight should I worry about it
@@hrdiesel also I noticed in the head gasket part 2 video this truck had a bent valve? Could that cause the ticking?
@@LBZDIRTYYMAX I would not worry about it until you start losing coolant. It is normal for it to build pressure then lose pressure as the engine cools down.
