You gotta love the at home engineers that diagnose a problem and create a solution for it, on brand new vehicles that a team of engineers cant fix. I love it!
We had a new (his 1st year) young auto shop teacher in high school back in 83/84. Great, smart guy. Had a great time with him there. Our first day he said "Guys, everything, everything and everything in a car will be electronically controlled very soon. Anyone can swap out an engine. Become awesome at diagnostics/troubleshooting and you will always be in the money!" He was exactly right. Eric at SMA is very good at it. He also says Chevy trucks are gonna put his kids thru college!
In 1988 I went through the Diesel Tech program at Wyoming Tech and they were saying the same thing about electronics and computers. The instructors were able to bring in a new IH 4300 with a Detroit 60 series engine with some of the new computerized components. Little did we know at the time that was the future for diesel techs!!
My sons duramax downshift to first gear on the freeway, truck went skidding across all 4 lanes, he was able to get it off the freeway without getting hit. By the way, the truck was brand new! Chevy replaced the trans, but it didn't end there, first the alt, then the power steering pump, anyway even dealer agreed that all the accessories were oversped, not too long after the engine started knocking. Chevrolet bought the truck back. Then he bought a 05 Dodge with Cummins. Still running strong.
We had a 2024 Chevy 3500 for about 8 months, trailer brake problems, transmission problems, dealership sucked. Was supposed to be an eventual replacement for my 2016 GMC, I'll keep the 16 forever, continue to fix it as stuff breaks. Gm did make it right with us eventually, now we have a 24 Tundra instead of the chevy and it's got 23,000 miles so far it's been good
That's a safety issue. You might consider filing a complaint with the NHTSA. They will investigate. I filed a complaint about RV electric steps that had defects that caused the steps to collapse. Their investigation resulted in a recall. It was just a simple form that takes a few minutes to fill out.
Just dropped my 2021 2500hd (71k miles) at the dealership today. I lost 2nd and 3rd gear plus slipping. Mine also started surging and randomly ticking in park..... Die hard Chevy guy but I have to say this is pretty frustrating. Always appreciate your videos.
I loved my '07 GMC Duramax with the Allison 6 speed trans. Put 400,000 miles on it before I passed it on to my nephew. It's still running for him and the only trans problem it has ever had is blowing cooler hoses. I feel your pain with the arm. I broke my left forearm in when I was about 12 in the 60's. Back then they only used plaster casts and in the six weeks I had to wear it I went through at least six different casts before the Doc gave up. I hope your arm is healing up but it will take a while to get the strength back. Keep up the good work and maybe leave the Derbys to the younger ones.
lol thought the same, every other time it's, "instructions? That's just the manufacturer's opinion of how to do it." He obviously cares a lot about this truck!
be sure to check the ground straps! See South Main Auto has a couple of great videos about the problem and the fix - replace the braided ground strap. The one behind the inner fenders by the starter motor is the place to start. Random electric problems equal grounding problems. Good luck
I don't know if not being in the salt belt makes that ground strap more reliable but it sure will cause a butt load of headaches if it ever has a problem.
That's the issue my 2016 Chevy Silverado had. Tried to start one day and battery was dead, put on charger and after a couple hours it started up. Decided to take to dealership and just as I get on interstate the infocenter went blank. Then ten minutes later the radio stopped working and shortly after all the gauges stopped working. Dealer called me two hours after dropping off and said the battery was kaput and the ground strap from engine to frame was showing to much resistance, replaced both. Working fine since. A freaking ground strap!
I've replaced and installed ground straps all over my Avalanche and I still have random things pop up, the one that erks me the most is service trailer brake system, I have changed the module and it still comes on every time I start to take off and I have never used it, lol 😢🤷♂️
That one is mostly an issue in upstate new york where road salt rots vehicles away faster than any other part of the country. I live in the rust belt and those braided ground straps were fine despite me driving in salty conditions every winter for over 5 years with limited car washes.
I have a 2021 with 80k. No issues yet. Been knocking on wood! lol. You need to put in the description where you got the parts and a update later on down the road.
"Government Motors" says it all. But it's not just GM. Every. Single. Thing that is mass produced nowadays is complete trash. Designed to break and be replaced before you even get it home. SMH
Seems like everyone is doing poorly. Ford 10 spd not that great, Dodge is loosing engines and customers. Yeah I remember the paint for GM as well as Chrysler. Seems they couldn't handle changing to clear coat but every decent body shop had no problems.
They all realize the problems. It's all a result of introducing software to the system. Mechanical issues can be pinpointed and corrected. Sometimes materials are not as consistent as we think, that's just the way of the physical world. Introducing electronics is allowing the systems to become vulnerable to interference from all the other electrical systems all over the world and it's the crux of that problem. That and inconsistent material properties. But none of that is the real issue. The real issue is money and how can they make more. Introducing things that are too complex or time consuming, as well as parts that can't be easily made, forces you to spend your money there, guaranteeing the influx of money that is necessary to feed the demon called greed. Greed. There's your culprit, and greed, the love of money, is the root of all evil. That's not a religious thing. Some try to say so, anyone that does is only attempting to get you to stop looking at them and highlighting their own greed. That is a fact of existence. Love of money is the root of all evil. It doesn't take a genius or some deep philosophical understanding to examine everything you see and hear and it to all boil down to that fact. You do not have to study deep religious canon. Every single one of them as well as any secular philosophy, all boil down to that one statement. You want what you do not have. How far will you go to get it? There's your meaning of life. Very few people are content to just have only what they need, and are compelled to attempt to gather everything they will need for their entire life, then bend others to that same purpose. Reducing their physical effort. The amount of work people have always put in to avoid the rather simple but constant effort required to survive is just plain stupid. And is another fact that cannot be avoided. Life requires a constant effort to provide it the fuel to keep running. That's universal and the reason things break down into their base components, entropy. Humans are focused on trying to slow that unavoidable fact, the reason for all efforts outside of just getting what you need to support life right now. Trying to stop that constant flow of energy and pool what we need for the rest of our life, or possibly gathering a surplus in hopes we can stop that constant flow out of us and thereby extending your life. Again, it's a function of that base emotion, greed. Trying to stop the march of time and flow of energy so you can have more time and energy for yourself. Congratulations, you have unlocked the secret to life. It's really no secret though. Anyone can figure out those two simple facts. The flow of energy is expressed as time. Nature wants to gather and pool that energy in hopes of preservation. It will use the energy it can gather for this purpose. But it is no a river to be dammed. Even damming the river will not stop it, eventually the pooling of that energy will overcome the obstacle or simply go around it. Just take your drink and keep on.
Ford was forced to issue a recall because they wouldn't do it voluntarily and they have had to "fix" it more than once because the previous "fix" didn't work.
My 07 Toyota Tundra (bought New) don't have a dip stick and fills the same as yours.. LONG STORY ! It's Always had somethin hooked to it since new.. i had issues with the Trans, through a bunch of new parts in it at 345,000+ miles with help from a Toyota expert an it was back on the road.. 373,000+ miles now..
People don't understand why I would be willing to pay 20k to fix my 2003 6.0 PSD. Better than spending 80k on a new one that will be a reliability nightmare.
the ford 10 speed is actually alot better dont get me wrong 80k is way too much but the 6.7 will go over a million miles and your 6.0 wont its a ups and downs kind of thing
@@TylerDuysen It has taken me almost 22 years to put 155k miles on my 6.0. We don't drive it as much since my wife lost her job during the pandemic and I now work from home. If it does a quarter million miles, someone else will be driving it to the graveyard to visit my grave. The specs on the 6.7 are impressive, but they are fast approaching that of a tractor trailer. I see people using F250 and F350 trucks in situations that really call for a semi. It just doesn't make sense to me. I'm glad I don't have a 6.4 though. They are barely worth paying for an oil change on them.
Thanks for helping make me feel better about the bad exhaust manifolds on my 07, I keep thinking if only I had a newer truck I would not have these issues then I see your video lol
Usually the aftermarket is who solves transmission problems. GM would just slap the same valve body back in there, and you'd be dealing with it again in 70K miles. It's more inconvenient to do this yourself, BUT, you'll be worlds ahead in the long run. Sonnax solves a lot of trans issues!
I'm glad you were able to find a "fix" for your tranny! My son bought a chevy duramax and had trans. problems pretty much from the start. Left him on the side of the road a couple times. Dealer said it was sensor problems and it would eventually lock up. AFTER limp mode, clear codes, start off again and then limp mode again, etc. until it wouldn't move at all. He had it about three years and sold it back to the dealer. It had been in the shop a few months total and on the third tranny. GM took care of it but never really fixed the problem.
My personal opinion is all new trucks (doesn’t matter make or model) are complete garbage. You are much better off getting anything made before 2005 and just rebuild them. Personally I’d try for something from the late 80’s early 90’s
I don't buy anything newer than '96. I am the only one of my friends/family that doesn't have issues all the time. New vehicles are a waste of time and money.
Ran in to an acquaintance a few weeks back who was driving a brand new Ram truck. He was feeling boastful and made fun of me for driving a low miles 2003 GMC 2500HD. He implied that I was "too broke to own a decent" truck and needed to get a job. Thing is, I retired five years ago at age 50. I was able to do that partly because I have never worn my money or pissed it away by carrying debt. So I just smiled and said "it sure is a handsome truck. Glad to see you are doing well". Found out his engine blew last week... and so he is paying more per month for a truck that doesn't run than I pay out for my entire household budget. I don't understand why folks are paying house money for shiny new garbage. It makes no sense.
Well, you're not the only person with a splint, or wrap. I had nerve surgery on my left elbow. Get stitches removed next week. Hope your recovery is faster than mine (Possibly a year to full recovery).
A police department just sold their fleet of Dodge Durangos at a loss because of basic engine failures that Dodge would not fix. . By attorney Steve Lehto on YT.
It's probably that stupid metal plate that they put in between the cam and the crank and later model Dodge engines that starves the camshaft lifters and pushrods of oil sitting at an idle
The 3.6l v6 from Chrysler has been plagued with issues since its inception. Rather fix the root issue of poor oil flow to the heads they added crank shaft knock silencers and re-engineered the lifters and rockers on the exhaust side cams like 3 times and they still fail. The 5.7l with a different design has problems with friction fit valve seats popping loose and dropping the valve seats into the piston during operation.. Dodge has basically gone to shit.
@@RifeDEFFilms My Ram Promaster van had an oil sending unit failure at 50k that seemed to be a common failure. All the oil leaks out before you know it. No low oil light came on but when the dash lit up like a christmas tree, I shut it down in time to not blow up the engine. Guy at the dealership said about half are blown up. Fortunately, it was under warranty.
It also adds as an anti theft device! You might be surprised how many people don't know how to use their left foot when they get a steering wheel in their hands.
Hey! The 10 speed in ‘19 f150 has been flawless so far lol I have 130,000km on it But I imagine the bigger trucks have a different trans? Think mine is the 10r80 or whatever? I dunno I just drive the thing
You could be correct, however I thought Ford and GM went in together and GM designed the 9sp, while Ford designed the 10. Each company builds their own and thus have small build/material differences.
So how is the transmission doing since you did the install and how many miles since the install ? Did this take care of your issues and if so do you recommend others do this?
Hey Paul. I have a 2020 Chevy 3500hd with the 10L1000 and am having the P0747 code. The GM tech says needs a new valve body but a new VB is not in stock for who knows how long. How is the 3rd party valve body kit holding up in your truck weeks now after you made the repair? Thanks
Modern trucks are become so overly complex and expensive. Almost like they build them to fail. Makes me want to channel my inner fab rat and build an LS motor to put in an older body to hopefully have something simpler…. We have all seen how well that has work for you…. Ha ha.
"Almost like they build them to fail." Almost...? Long time ago car business was to make good, lasting cars. Now it's just exclusively about making vast amounts of the almighty buck.👴🤑🤷♂
@@Arnaud58 Pretty soon they'll go the John Deer route and make it impossible to fix yourself. Even a light bulb change needs to be done by the dealer. The "Right to Repair" should be a right.
I have a 2011 f150 ... Yeah its only a 6 speed but ... When towing it had the exact same symptom ... Let me tell you. .. when towing down hill on snow covered ice and it jumps down that hard from 6 to 2nd gear shure as hell scared me ... I just instantly took it out of tow haul mode and throttled down to regain control... Then in 2018 ford had a software fix that addressed that....
Watching you perform your magic rebuilding that transmission reminded me of watching my father doing the same thing. He maintained every car or truck he owned. He worked for an oil drilling company in and around Southern California.
As a service manager for a Chevrolet dealership for over 20 years now I can say i personally will not own anything newer than a 2006. I like to get to where I am going and back without issues. Also GM just finally released a bulletin to replace the valve body for the issues you were having. Getting the valve body is a whole other issue.
2006 and older, and you're in GMT800s with 4Lx0E's that shit the bed every 75-120k miles, fuel pumps that randomly just die on the regular, and a whole slew of other problems. GM always has and always will be junk.
@Mejughead do you know if the valve body is an updated one from gm??? My 23 gmc duramax went down a month ago for a stuck valve in the value body... still no parts yet... hoping in 2 more weeks but it's not set in stone yet. I was wondering if it's at least an updated version
@@FCM.inc1 yes it is an updated valve body. It took over a month to get the valve body. I even tried getting a complete transmission in order to speed things up for my customer and it was also back ordered.
We have found with the GM 8 and 10 speed transmissions, oil and filter change at 40,000 miles. We are using Mobil 1 LV HP black label fluid. We also add a 2 oz. tube of Lube Guard. I have.a 2019 Silverado with a 5.3 and 8 speed that has 152,000 miles. Goes down the road like a brand new truck. We also do motor oil changes every 5,000 miles and use the SAE 0-20 full synthetic oil. So far so good.
You're a brave man, Paul. I went to school at the teck in provo a long time ago in auto mechanics add body and friend to work. And I would never drop the pan on one of those. Good luck.
Paul, u never shared what codes showed up !! We appreciate what you're showing us but without knowing what is the application that doesn't really do much for us

@@jamespotter936 Don't worry you won't be able to buy a Dodge soon they will have gone under , who in their right mond would pay over $30000 for a PickUp it's a waste of money to pay $700 / month on an of these things not far from me a Dodge dealership is leasing them for $299 a month then your not stuck with them when not if they break.
Glad to see you're healing well. My mother broke her arm almost the same as yours (though not doing the same activity, haha) a few weeks before you and she hasn't been using it enough and the docs are warning her the tendons and stuff will heal too tight. You're getting more range of motion and use out of yours than she is, despite her having a 3 week head start, haha.
My 2017 l5p is a beast, it’s deleted and runs amazing 135,000 miles on it. Just regular maintenance, before the delete needed nox sensors. Also have changed the glow plugs.
Should have bought a older truck with the Allison 6 speed then the newer truck with Allison badged 10l80e that was designed by GM and Ford as a joint venture.
With my 2022 6.6 gasser people complained about the 10 speed not being offered. On the other hand I was pleased the 6 speed 6L90e was still available. Does what I need it to do.
The GM and Ford 10 speeds in the diesel trucks is garbage. Hotshot guys eat them up in 70-80k all the time. Glad you found a fix. I’m hoping the ZF 8 speed that’s going to be in the 25+ Ram holds up
My last GM vehicle (Chevy Volt) had a similar setup regarding the dipstick free transmission design. Following their instructions for checking the fluid level after trans service (via a level check hole) while running the engine didn't work; it would just spew trans fluid out everywhere once the pump started running. I resorted to just measuring the fluid that came out after draining and adding back the same amount in new fluid. That car was super reliable, but that trans design was the craziest thing I've seen. Without a reliable way to measure the fluid, there has to be a lot of underfilled or over-filled GM transmissions on the road.
This method of checking trans fluid level is common across the industry now. Toyota/Aisin was one of the early adopters. They removed the dipstick and sealed the trans, leaving just the drain hole. They also pushed the "sealed for life" trans fluid, suggesting the fluid was good for the life of the vehicle.
And seems to not want to be on camera if ya look at her facial expressions in the close out of the video in the shop. To young to be like that already..😂😂
One more comment, I see you have what I call a dial adjust splint now. They are so cool, and when they form them for the arm, I found the warmth to feel really good. Keep it for the next time you do a destruction derby for safety sakes.
Amazon - Watkins Products - Petro Carbo Salve - using this will help heal your skin back together. It works very, very good. I've used it for over 50yrs. with fantastic results. You and Your Family and Friends are so great to watch and follow. I am in my mid 70's and can tell you to follow the Doctors orders.God Bless!!!
I think the last year of the Allison transmission was 2017 and the newer trucks use a GM transmission based on the Allison. Supposedly 800,000 or so trucks were sold with faulty transmissions and there is a class action lawsuit against GM but we shall see. Can't believe that they haven't recalled these trucks but then again no one is holding them accountable for flawed designs.
@@tyendor1952 they dont own allison they have a license agreement just lie ram and the cummins it just makes so they can sell there parts cummins and allison are there own companies
@@TylerDuysen Thanks I knew they owned Allison but didn't realize the sold it ... General Motors bought Allison Transmissions in 1929 after the death of James Allison and in 2007 they sold it to Carlyle and Onex
I’m a Chevy fan but yes they have been really unreliable lately since about 2015. I mean they’ve always had electrical Gremlins either way I drive a Cummins and it may not win races but it always gets me to my destination
I have a 2018 Chevy Silverado with the 5.3 and I've done had the transmission rebuilt once and had it replaced once and in the process of getting the motor rebuilt because it has a rod knocking because of that Active Fuel Management System (AFM) in it
Mine is a lot older truck, 04 Duramax, but it did the exact same thing for a few years. I finally opened up the wire loom on the harness where it jumps from the frame up to the trans and figured out there were several wires that had worn insulation from gravel dust accumulation. They'd arc and send weird signals to the TCM, especially if it had rained or snowed outside. I dragged the entire harness out the wheel well onto a table, traced every wire one after the other, repaired any damage and stuffed everything back inside a piece of 1"clear vinyl hose and wrapped it like the dickens with really good 3m electrical tape. 80k since then and not one single trans issue.
You'd also be amazed at the number of wires that had a random knot tied into them or one wire would be half hitched around another here and there. No less than a dozen of those occurrences.
Never heard of the GM problem. 13 LML with the Allison…200k and no transmission issue. You should swap that CP4 though! That’s a 10k problem for all newer trucks…Ford, Ram… While you’re at it, delete everything!
Ram uses CP3. Disaster prevention kit from S&S Diesel is an excellent add on to make the problem less expensive. Good fuel additives also help prevent the issue. 350,000 miles on my 21 F350 and no issues yet with the CP4. Wish I could say the same for the transmission.
I'd leave the cast a month. I felt great after 2 plates and 33 screws 2 weeks later so I went commando no splint. Then I reached for the truck door as the wind caught it and it meant surgery to redo everything but bone splinters when not fully healed so it was 3x worse. You do what ya want but "I told you so" lmao. Luv the vids all the best fab rat fam
I’m a diesel tech at a gm dealership and I’ve replaced several valve bodies in those 10 speeds. Gm has a bulletin for this issue. Codes are usually p0700, p0747, p0746 if memory serves correctly. And they take special fluid that has to be shaken that is ulv fluid.
Is the part number for the new valvebody different than the original failures? I am wondering if they actually redesigned the valvebody or if they just slap another crappy one in.
I am in South Africa, had a 3.2 l ford with a zf box (transmission) it did the same, ford charged me R87000 for a recon box, I sold the vehicle as is, its crazy here with the R vs $, cheers grate content love you guys.
I had a Chevy once when I was 17. Undependable. Sold it to a church and the trany quit working within a month. I drove multiple Chevy trucks at work over a period of 32 years and hated every single one of them. Try a Toyota next time. They seem to stand behind their products. Maybe a Dodge or a Ford. On the other hand, my other half bought a brand new Chevy Cobalt in 2008 and it is still dependable, tho she has had to take it back to the dealer multiple times.
Paul: The symptoms you describe seem very similar to the issues on my 2018 Tacoma. It also lacks a dipstick as well. Loves to shift crazy and on acceleration goes into neutral.

Paul do you think the transmission issue could possibly be the black fluid you drained/flushed out of it instead of a couple o-rings ? I believe if you read the manual your supposed to change the fluid alot earlier when towing constantly 🤷♂️. Might take one evening and read the manual, there's ALOT of useful information 👍👍🇺🇲
It’s an Alison issue not a GM issue. They known about this issue for some time put not big enough for a recall to be issued. Sucks but that’s the dice. Could be worse could be a tundra with low oil pressure issue or ford with an injection pump issue. Lesson is we can’t get quality parts in are vehicles anymore.
Built in conjunction with Ford. Both companies 10 speed transmissions are basically the same. Different enough for proprietary reasons. Both transmissions are junk.

I guarantee the engineers know exactly what's wrong and how to fix it. It's the corporate bean counters that don't let them.
Engineers have a solution, but the solution is probably not in the financial interests of the manufacturers.

My daily driver is a 2007 Chevy 3500 Duramax LBZ.
220K miles. I love this truck. I just keep doing the maintenance and keep on driving.

My 2014 F150 had a recall for that very problem. Nice that Ford realized it and fixed it.
That's the difference between ford and gm !!
Same here, man, 2014 FX4 got the recall in the mail.
At least they fixed yours. A cousin of mine was told by the Ford dealership that they didn't know how to fix it. He got rid of it.
Ford was forced to issue a recall because they wouldn't do it voluntarily and they have had to "fix" it more than once because the previous "fix" didn't work.

the ford 10 speed is actually alot better dont get me wrong 80k is way too much but the 6.7 will go over a million miles and your 6.0 wont its a ups and downs kind of thing

Yep, I just watched that yesterday, and todays is the judge who cuffed the student

So dumb$100,000 trucks Don't last . Automakers do not give a s***. If they have good products or not anymore. Give me a square body and a standard transmission. Good job fixing it Paul if it stays fixed lol 👍👍👍
So is the fix still holding up and have you towed with it?
Paul do you think the transmission issue could possibly be the black fluid you drained/flushed out of it instead of a couple o-rings ? I believe if you read the manual your supposed to change the fluid alot earlier when towing constantly 🤷♂️. Might take one evening and read the manual, there's ALOT of useful information 👍👍🇺🇲
Thank you Paul and crew for the update on how things are going there in Utah !
I may be wrong, but didn't GM license 'Alison' for their transmission? They used to be Alison.
its not actually an allison gm is just using the branding for sales
Built in conjunction with Ford. Both companies 10 speed transmissions are basically the same. Different enough for proprietary reasons. Both transmissions are junk.
@@johnselzer761 but they arent they have some similar parts thats it
The only Allison part of this transmission is the name
I have a 2021 3500 HD High Country Duramax High just like yours but in Cherry Red. I am at sixty thousand trouble free miles now. I hope im a lucky one and have no trans problems but I reall liked this video.
I would have fixed in the beginning by not buying a duramax but where you are at i could still fix it much faster than you did. Drive it to the dealer and trade it on a F350!
If it is a 10 speed, it is the same tranny in the Ford.
It’s the same 10 speed tranny in the Ford. That tranny is why I won’t give up my 2016 super duty.
What kit was used for the repair and where can we get it?
When are you going to finish setting up your Waste Oil Heater? WINTER IS COMING
