I had two exhaust studs break on my b18c5, and after being flabbergasted on how much a complete set from Honda cost to replace I went looking around for something else. I ended up using Volvo part number 953047 studs. They cost $3 each, are the correct thread pitch and size, and are made from I believe hardened inconel. Fantastic upgrade, won't rust, and better than OEM. Oh, and 1/4th the price!
The ground strap on the valve cover is used to give the spark plug wire something to ground to in the event you have spark leak. The valve cover is insulated due to the gasket and grommets. You don’t want that high voltage discharging elsewhere.
Sorry, but the ground strap on brand new oem cars were always on the stud, the threaded holes on the cover itself were for RHD throttle cable brackets.
@@dancarlos1216 This, ground strap goes to the valve cover grommet/stud to ground the engine. You can confirm by looking up things like the type R sales brochure, you can see it attached to the stud.
The main engine ground is on the pass side frame rail, that's the one that grounds the starter for the big amperage. So the sensor ground doesn't necessarily go through the valve cover, if that's what you're wondering.
As a 96 GSR owner, this may be the single most informative Integra tuning video I've ever seen on TH-cam. In awe with what you guys are capable of doing on your own. Great work!
The valve cover is grounded thru the valve cover studs. Where you bolted your ground isn't a ground, they are the mounts for the RHD throttle cable brackets.
I will second this. In hindsight it is obvious that the valve cover is insulated with the gasket and must use the studs. My K24 swap on my EK would not start for this exact reason. Once we solved the issue I felt like an idiot but remember seeing many others make the same mistake and never realize it.
I think he's referring to this being a budget build for the Average Joe so he wanted it to be off the shelf bolt on stuff for ease of assembly and lower cost. Not everyone has the equipment or the skills to just whip something up like that and would have to take it some where to get done therefore the budget takes a hit I also see PT's perfectionism coming into it too and that also makes sense.

I've had 100% success rate doing probably 40 valve covers with VHT wrinkle when i bake it or stick it in my gas BBQ/Grill at about 250*. It more evenly cures it up for a more even finish vs using a heat gun. Food for thought. Loving these simple builds
The anxiety I had until I saw the extractor move is gonna give me nightmares tonight… so glad it was easy for you guys. Most hardware stores sell exhaust studs, never use bolts or torque to full spec if you absolutely must use bolts.

Makes me want to grab an FRS or Si and live the 4 banger life.
I think I wouldn't have bought new wheels, that would've saved you a ton of money on your budget. Just put the new tires on the existing wheels and then upgrade the wheels after the competition when you're not working on such a tight budget
I would say that depends on if they are lighter as that could really wake up the feel of the car I know swapping out LS meshes for even steelies you can feel a difference in acceleration but ya takes up some $
After the theft of my 45k mile EM1 and sale of my '90 Si hatch, it hurts to see nice Hondas around. After seeing the love given to this Integra, I have to admit it hurts SO good.
A good replacement for the VHT wrinkle paint is rust-oleum brand spray can truck bed liner. Mist it on from 15-18in away until you have full coverage. It leaves the perfect oem texture and you can add a satin red over it to achieve the texture red. This technique achieves a 99% oem texture. But not only that it is much thicker and more durable then the VHT stuff. It covers imperfections much better
Top tip, polish the rocker cover letters up first, then using a cotton bud, put a THIN coating of grease over the letters, then paint. Afterwards, scrape the paint off using a blade. The earth strap goes from the front slam panel to the bottom right dome nut on the rocket cover (as you're stood at the front of the car looking at the engine).
Great end result! Really like the Gramlights and the exhaust look and sound is perfect! Great list of simple mods on the car. And if PT hadn't said anything about all the imperfections in the valve cover, we'd be none the wiser (besides obvious color difference) - it looks great on my phone. Haha. But certainly helpful tips for someone tackling it themselves. Bring on the EK video!
@@street954 I think it just illustrates how creamy of a white Championship White is. I found the same thing on my own DC2 that had some Type R champ white panels swapped onto it.
Awesome! The Integra sounds amazing with the 3 inch exhaust. Replacing the rear mount would probably make a bigger difference in the engine movement and the Hasport one is only about $136 USD. Although if your stock rear mount is still good, we could see why you wouldn't want to replace that.
Before you paint use chapstick over the letters and it will wipe off when your done. They sell a darker red in a rattle can at auto parts stores by a different brand I think. I’ve done it before and it turned out perfect! I did it outdoors in 90f heat and didn’t use a heat gun. I let it bake in the sun and it cured within a short time.
Valve cover is grounded to the frame through the strap and the engine is grounded to the frame at the water neck and tranny. That’s how the valve cover and engine share a frame ground. The valve cover isn’t grounded to the block due to the gaskets. That’s the whole reason for that ground strap. For anyone doubting this, the engine and the tranny are exactly the same. They both have rubber mounts isolating them from the frame, therefore they need grounding straps leading from them to the frame.
It's so nice to see functional wheels and tires on a performance car now a days. So many people in the car seen in particular Honda's have way to large wheels and low offset.
I painted my k20 valve cover wrinkle red. Same story it's just not as nice as an OEM part. I found the b series a bit easier since it's flatter but It just isn't the quality of a new valve cover. I'll probably track one down from Honda down the road as well. Keep it up, enjoying these videos alot!

When doing VHT wrinkle paint, I heat the rattle can in submerged hot water bucket for about 10 min and heat the part up with heat gun at least very warm to the touch, this insures quick flashing = zero runs and just a very even consistency of finish. Final cure you don't really want to blast it with the heat gun point blank like that but bring the whole part up evenly or just throw it in the oven at the lowest setting for a bit (175-220)

When the full resto happens, I hope you guys can find a place to nickel cadmium plate (or whatever the golden finish is on honda bolts and brackets is). I remember back in the days when not a lot of people would look down on Hondas because the local high schoolers would be into import. Now I see a lot of people appreciating old school Hondas, but unfortunately the Honda dealerships are cranking the price on the basic trim of the FK series and FL that it makes it unappealing to even tuning them like before. I know the Honda engineers made leaps in term of horsepower and consumers desire features, but to sacrifice the affordability of the Honda legacy is damaging. Plus, the 1.5 T engines are having head gasket issues and leaving little rooms for tuners to improve on the performance of it makes it less fun. At least I can still be grateful for the K series, and whatever is left with the B series. Awesome content in this channel btw. Very nostalgic, to see the work and look of this vehicle.

To me it looked like your first coat of the wrinkle red was too heavy. The paint will shrink away from edges when you heat it up if you don't let it bond with the surface before you heat it.
For the valve cover you respray it for a proper wrinkle, spray over that with normal paint that's the correct color, then for the letters you take a razorblade and cut them off

Watching you extract the ex bold made me cringe. Those are so easy, I've had 3 heads in a row that the broken piece just spun out. Also, watching you clean the gasket surface sadend me. Never use those!! A sanding block and 320 grit sp. For an amazing finish sand with wd40! Works amazing and use the oe MLS gasket.

Got al 5 engine mounts on mine for years, still in very good condition 👍🏻
Can wait to here is scream on the dyno and track 💪🏻😎

To me it looked like your first coat of the wrinkle red was too heavy. The paint will shrink away from edges when you heat it up if you don't let it bond with the surface before you heat it.
How long do you usually let it sit for the surface to bond?
@@jpdolan9958 I do a tack coat and let it sit for 45 minutes unless it's really cold.
Sounds about right, i had the same problems with heavy coats. I grinded it down and added some light coats where it was bad. Ended looking ok
Yeah it seemed too heavy when it was being applied to me aswell.
Nice, love the Icebox, I've had one on my Integra for years.
next time try using the mig welder to extract the stud. much faster and easier.

For the valve cover you respray it for a proper wrinkle, spray over that with normal paint that's the correct color, then for the letters you take a razorblade and cut them off
