3:47 Why you get more for your money with an older air-cooled 993 911?
5:26 Is buying an almost 30 year old Porsche 993 a good idea financially?
5:36 Porsche 993 911 is the most beautiful Porsche ever made.

100% agree! I was lucky enough to have bought my 993 in 2007 when the market wasn’t so crazy. 15 years later, just oil changes and other maintenance bits, I now have 110k miles on it and love driving it today as much as I did the first time I sat in it! I don’t care what it’s worth now because I’ll never sell it! Great video 👍🏻

Enjoyed your pitch, thanks! But I believe there is a side-note to make here. I own a 993 and a Boxster from the same year, 1997. Although they came from the same production-line in that same year, there are clearly many differences. Forget the obvious for a moment. Reason why Porsche was not making money on the 993, was not just quality. It was to a large extend the build complexity and inefficiencies in the manufacturing process. Take off a door-panel from a 993, then do the same with a 986, and you will understand. Does this all translate into value for the owner? No! Just look at the crappy way the storage bin in the doors of the 993 are constructed. Most are broken by now. Or the 5 separate instruments in the 993, with the fogging tacho, versus one unit in the 986/996. Which can be switched from miles to km and it is very easy to add the boardcomputer … try that on a 993 - good luck! Like many, my 993 is incontinent whereas my 986 ran more km’s, but without ever dripping any oil.
With the help of Toyota, Porsche cut lots of waste out of their manufacturing process from 993 to 986/996. This waste did not add value to the owner of the car, just cost.
There is a very relevant point that you are making. The big difference was that Porsche also changed from an engineering-led approach to making cars into one that is Marketing-led. Success led to higher production numbers, which meant lower cost per unit and hence higher margins.
My 986 and 993 are both fantastic cars. The big differences in my view, owning both:
    1. Price and cost to run a 986 Boxster are much much lower than the 993. Both don’t depreciate, we’ll see how they gain value once the next generation is used to electric rather than petrol. The investment-to-fun ratio today definitely favors the 986.
    2. Experience: the 986 may be the better drive, but the 993 provides an unbeatable experience. Its rear-tail-handling, air-cooled roar, odd seating position, etc. are unique for these (true) 911’s. Indeed, the 993 is the last and best ever built by Porsche to give you that experience.

I owned a g series but always craved the most modern of the air cooled. Sold it 13 years ago but have finally, with the stars aligning around home, family and work got myself a 96 993 C4. It has the varioram and also the shorter ratio'd geared g64/21. Couldnt be happier. Have watched this video many times as its nice to hear someone praising the car. I also love the fact it sits in the "i know my stuff and love the car for the car" bracket and not , "i have #$%loads of cash and want the latest ". Cant tell you how many times through drive throughs or on the freeway I get a comment or a cool hand signal from passing cars.....it also sounds cool. Need a video comparing the r107 Mercedes and the Porsche doors. I have both now and the merc definitely has nice door action.

Check the vapor barriers on the doors, it’s a plastic that almost makes the door act like a boom box….if it’s missing or falling, the door effectively looses bass when closing.

Do not believe that any Porsche is cheap to run. An oil and brake fluid change costs me €1000 at my Porsche dealer. Parts prices are extremely expensive. I love 964 and 993’s but prices for these cars are so bloated that it makes absolutely no sense to buy one at this time unless you have money to burn.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Friend, the money is only burned if you do not recoup the funds when selling. With these cars, you sell it for more. Prices keep going up even in this economy, it’s actually accelerating….because it’s a safe investment. A new Honda is cheaper to run, but you loose a half of its value is a few years…now that’s burning money 💰
Porsche’s do not use special oil…oil is oil. How much you pay someone else to change it is another story.

Nice video but personally I find the 993 to be an ugly car. It just seems like Porsche wanted to build the 996 but the technology wasn’t there yet. The 964 is iconic by design but the 993 is a bit off, from the front and side it’s proportions look off, the shape of the 996 headlights but with round ones fitted, then the front looks like it’s from a different era to the rear. The interior is complex yet no better quality, in fact the 996 interior was designed for the 993 but Porsche didn’t have the money to make it a reality at the time. The 964 marks the end of the classic 911 the 996 the beginning of the new but the 993 just seems like the awkward bridge. Not one thing or another, old technology but trying to look modern and not quite capturing one or the other slow. Nostalgia for the time is what makes them valuable, it only takes looking at forums from the time the 996 came out to see how people said it was another planet of handling, speed and responsiveness, when people talk about the 993 it’s emotional but no one ever can say it was a better driving car. Maybe that’s what makes them so unique but personally I’d go pre 993 or post but put the 993 as the worst 911.

Ben you make lots of great points! A Porsche 964 3.6 Turbo with 18” Speedlines is my all time favorite, like in the Bad Boys movie!! You know what I’m talking about 💥💥
Ben Terry thanks for watching!! 🔥🔥

You're pretty much alone with your opinions. If you take a non-Porsche person out of the street and ask him/her to say which is the best looking air cooled, 95% of them will say 993. 964 and G-body are both great lookers though. 996... well... there's a reason you can buy four or five 996's for the price of one 993 or 964. Nobody wants them.

@@HernanSpeed In 1996, I was moving TONS of WeED from AZ, Tucson, where I live to the East Coast. Since HS I always loved working on cars. I also have my true dream car: 1956 Chevy Bel-Air Convertible w/a Continental Kit. Owning my 911 is a pain in the royal AsS. It's like leaving a child in a stroller out in the middle of the freeway. It sit in my garage w/evaporative cooling during the Summer months in Arizona. Zero rust. No one is allowed to drive it but me! The attention it draws, & I'm afraid of someone keying it. My grandson will eventually own it. He's 8.

Sounds like you’re Grandson has got a cool grandpa! I know about the upkeep, it can be a pain…especially if you want to keep it in pristine condition.
I’d go for the Bel-Air! It’s got room for real adults in the back, an incredible cruiser! 💯💯
