Porsche 911 993 - here's why to BUY

  • Porsche 911 993. Back in the day I yearned for all of those Porsche 911 versions yet in 1994 I was dazzled by the 993. For me this one banished all of the earlier models to history.
With hindsight it now seems Zuffenhausen hit the target with this cars blend of technology, air-cooled development, and for the 1990’s a high tech appearance based upon the 959 hyper car. We can now see this for what it was back then - a fitting final hurrah for Porsche air cooled engined cars.
A big thank you again to Alastair Dootson for loaning me this Beautiful 993.

Since I was a Teenager the Porsche 911 is my Dream Car. 1997 my dream came true, and I acquired a brand new 993 C4 3.8 l , which I drive regularly to this day.
I like my new 992 also, but the „automobile part of my heart“ belonged to the luftgekühlt one ! And the day will come, I“ll have my „Last Drive“ and my Son will enjoy this wonderful car.

I’ve had mine for around 10 years; running costs are not excessive albeit all Porsche spares are not cheap. The slightly offset pedal layout on the right hand drive cars doesn’t suit everyone but the exhaust note is just wonderful. It’s the prettiest 911.

Fun fact: The 993 was supposed to be the first water-cooled car, and also was supposed to have an all-new chassis under that new body, but Porsche was broke. The 996 is what the 993 was meant to be by its designers.

I've always wondered if the 993 water cooled would have had the same sloping posterior if required to accomodate the extra plumbing. Most likely a fatter rump like the 996 I suspect which may have dramatically changed the overall design. I love the 993, but after a 3.2 Carrera years ago I decided on a 996.1 and I absolutely love it. But the 993 silhouette is nigh on perfect.

Great clip that captures all the essential points. I was lucky enough to buy a ‘97 manual coupe 7 years ago. I traded my Honda Civic plus cash for it. I have had to spend a lot of money getting common issues sorted over the years, but the car gives me so much pleasure there is no way I could let go of it. I have added a manual 981 Boxster s (with sports suspension) to the garage since and while it is brilliant in its own right with its own distinctive almost formula 1 scream in comparison, there is something so special about the 993. It’s a full throttle car, whereas the 981 tips over that point with a bit more power and bit less grip. I also prefer it’s rear engine dynamics and the way the car speaks to me in the corners - I feel I know where it’s limits are; there’s a progressiveness to it. The 981 does handle tremendously well with its mid engine weight distribution, but I find its limits more elusive and that it could snap on me if I push it too hard (or get lulled into not driving it like a 911). In weaker moments I have considered selling both for a more modern manual 911, but I know that would not be the right move for me. People usually describe the 993 as being special because it’s the last of the air cooled. Something that isn’t talked about all that much is that it’s arguably the last 911 that had the length of gearing that makes most sense for spirited road driving. The issue of tall gearing in modern Porsches is not limited to the mid engine cars, even if it is more noticeable in those cars because they have less low down torque than 911s.

+1. . I get a kick out of these popular as of late Carrera 993 TH-cam videos ... especially when the Carrera is finished with Arctic Silver metallic & wearing original CUP II wheels. . When spec-ing the '98 Carrera S coupe purchase,,, on the mind of many enthusiasts was the 911 evolution that started in 1964 was coming to an end. . The 911 models to come will depart greatly from Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen engineering's 34-year evolution. . With that in mind myself and others placed 1998 993 orders.. So glad to own & drive an original 993 C2S coupe finished in Arctic Silver metallic w/black full leather & don't forget the CUP II wheels ....

Well done video. You are spot on regarding a well sorted out 993 and basing it on the care it was afforded by previous owners. Makes all the difference. I purchased my 993 C4 four years ago. Low mileage and well taken care of by the previous two owners in the Pacific Northwest. Considered a similar C2S last year, and yes the price would have shot up by now, but it just wasn't taken care of. Would still like to add a Guards Red/Black C2S to the stable, but the C4 stays! Can't love the 993's enough!

Very nice video and excellent information. One other item to mention about the 993 is to check the door straps. They have a tendency to break at the weld behind the door sill especially on the drivers side as that door gets used the most. The quickest way to identify this is when opening or closing the door there will be a very distinct click, click, click. usually in a series of 3. Then look at the strap when opening or closing and you will see the strap moving. The fix for this is to remove the front fender and spot weld the base of the starp back in place. It can be a costly fix.

First Porsche a few years ago was a 964C2 manual. Preferred the shape to a 993 but it
was ultimately underwhelming, it felt heavy and slow which was a surprise so I sold it after a few months (for a profit!). I’ve since had a 996 GT2 then 981 GT4 and now 991.2 GT3 CS PDK. Fantastic machines but all way too fast for the road and too good to bash around a track. The conundrum continues to find the holy grail, light, RWD, enough power to have fun but low enough in grip that it’s fun at legal speeds.

Since 997 Porsche has tried to get back the 993 front design and styling. 997, 991 and 992 are great cars and they look good... don't get me wrong. And performance wise much better cars than the air cooled. But they just can't recapture the ESSENCE of the old 911. First the cars are too big now and the genuine, mechanical response from the road is simply gone. Cars became too good. It's like when digital watches came out everyone wanted a Casio. After a decade people went back to automatic mechanical watches again. They're never as accurate as quartz watches but they have SOUL. You know what I mean? G-model, 964 and 993 still have that genuine "road feel". And 993 is the best looking Porsche ever made and will be even more desirable in the future, there's absolutely no doubt about that.

Great journey back into the last century thanks Roger. To get one I'd have to move as the mayor's ULEZ comes into operation in the autumn robbing Londoners of the joy of owning and driving one of these.
I'm betting that were we fortunate to be treated to another Luftgekühlt on these shores, you'd be amongst the first in line for tickets!!!

It would indeed be a blast Roger!!
While I like the multi-link suspension on the 993, I have to admit my dream air-cooled would possibly be a 964 C4 probably because of our inclement weather but sorted with revised suspension etc. While I really do appreciate the svelte lines of the 993, there's something about that old silhouette of the 911. Oh and that air con!!! That's the beauty of these " Porsches anciens ". You can really go to town on them.
Then I'll put in an application to have it displayed at Luftgekühlt :D

Agree that the 993 is a wonderful car and MY favorite of the Air-Cooled 911’s. Price is absolutely an issue. Driven back to back with my manual 997 GTS and being asked to plunk down $40k more is a non-starter for me. Zero regrets on the Wasser-cooled club...

993 sweetness , sweetheart. Not enough on the roads. Seldom see one on the move . However isn’t the 996/997 coming good, starting look peachy . Maybe just maybe the 993 wasn’t the sweetest after all. Hmmmmmmm.
