2018-2020 BMW M5 | The Most Insane Luxury Sedan Ever

  • The M5 is one of the most insane cars sold in America and yet at the same time eminently practical. With launch control you can run 0-60 times that would make Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and McLarens jealous, but it seats people in comfort and has enough room in the back for rear facing child seats and two sets of golf clubs. The lateral grip isn't quite in the super-car category but it's shockingly close while delivering a ride that won't bruise your kidneys. BMW's latest AWD system improves traction in adverse weather yet is fully-defeatable when you want to do doughnuts and burnouts. The M5 is quite simply one of the most impressive engineering accomplishments from Germany, yet at the same time it's upsetting all manner of BMW M-faithful. But they couldn't be more wrong... This is the best M ever.

      Probably more like 650hp.

    • @stubones
      @stubones 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adding to what Bennie said, they make anywhere between 630-650hp depending on the mileage of the car and the dyno used. Cars that are still "tight" (lower mileage just over the run in mileage) make just over 630hp. There are claims of M5s making up to 670hp, but that's not realistic. The AMG E63S is also making in the region of 650hp, not the 603bhp Merc claim.

    Great review! I
    Even though my white 18 AMG E63 S wagon was wonderful in many aspects. The roughness in low speed and too firm air suspension in daily drive made me committed to exchange for my new ride.........fully loaded M5 a week ago. Even it is just a regular m5, I indeed do feel the she is hair faster in acceleration (3.12 for 0-60 with the wagon). That was my 3rd E63 over almost a decade. This m5 provides impressive speed in a more gentle way. She can be very wild if choose so. I guess I am getting a bit older. Even I still like to drive very fast but now I choose to be in more “smooth” way of fast.......:)

      +Blake Swan the GS F is an awesome car, and it will almost certainly last longer and require far less maintenance. However, the GS F is nowhere near the M5 in terms of performance. The GS F does 0-60 in 4.5, while the M5 does it in 2.8. You really can't fairly compare the two.

    Doesn’t the Charger Hellcat compete with the M5, even though it’s not a luxury sedan and the interior isn’t as refined as the Germans? The hellcat is insanely powerful w 700hp, and the same ZF 8 speed as the m5. Yes it lacks AWD, but for a RWD only sedan, 0-60 times are very close to the m5, and the biggest ace for the dodge: it’s half the price.

    M5 definitely no doubt .... It is more advance than the two, etc you can actually use gesture control for commands and gesture control to drag and move the cameras around the car and also I love the upgraded touch screen key fob that you can achieve data and have control of the vehicle. BMW is the first to innovate the I DRIVE control which is the best in the market today. And there is a lot more technology that I can’t go into right now. The M5 is more of a driver car its more controllable and compare to the amg (where the gear lever is on the steering wheel) the M5 is right were you need it to be. Overall the M5 is the fastest (not to mention the competition package), it is more comfortable and have more styling and also you have more options to choose from. M5 is like having 2 cars in 1 you can take it on the track or you can drive normally with your family inside very comfortable, this is why the BMW M5 IS TRULY THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE.

  • @SAFETYDR

    Per your request, since there is no outstanding difference among the three, I would opt for the CTS-V. Caddy has come a long way. It is engaging, handles superbly and it is lower cost. The acceleration negative isn't a major negative. And, in base trim, it is superior and substantially lower cost. Caddy is flying under the radar for too long. I would go with the CTS-V.

      @tjk9263 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree. Any of the internet idiots who think this new M5 with AWD is not a typical M car is right. Its not a typical M car, its much better. Anyone who knows about cars knows that a powerful car like the M5 will perform better, especially sharp corners at high speed with an AWD system. Plus BMW was smart enough to give you the option to turn off the AWD system and just have rear wheel drive if you want to do burnouts or racing on a drag strip. But if you want to take the M5 on a twisty track, make sure you have the AWD system on

    AN excellent and comprehensive analysis and narrative. However, I would have liked to have seen how the trunk was finished under the center mat. I think you should have mentioned that instead of 8 user programmable short cut buttons like on immediately previous generations, there are now only 7. Did this not have the heads up display? Also, is this the iDrive7 or still the iDrive6?
    Keep going as the graphics, if not the video jump cuts, are first rate and informative.
    I cannot find your review on the E63S through TH-cam search. I was interested because most reviewers have noted the ride in that car is rougher and not as serene as the M5 in comfort mode. Also, the tank capacity of each would be helpful as multiplied by MPG yields a refueling frequency datum.

    • @LilRick96
      @LilRick96 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@stubones yeah see, don't push your biased subjective ass opinion on me and then talk about "childish" AMG customers. Lord help me kid. I'm taking the E63 interior over the M5 anyday of the week, I'm taking THE stock BRUTAL sound on the AMG or I can add the performance exhaust because why wouldn't I want that on my 600 plus hp beast and have it sound muted and weak like the M5? Tech in terms of what? The gesture controls? I'm good, BMW doesn't even offer Android auto. I'll give you Idrive is overall better but MB infotainment looks better and idc about handling and who's quicker because both will crush any car that isn't a super car. So I'm taking the E63s

    • @stubones
      @stubones 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BMW deliberately don't offer Android Auto, but if you did your research you'd know that and their reasons for it. Everything I wrote is the general consensus after dozens of reviews, the gesture control is an option (no one holds a gun to a buyers head), Merc have to two stretched tablets glued to the dash, which is a bit hit and miss in terms of looks. BMW is focused, the controls are better, the ergonomics are better, the build quality is better (also the general consensus). As for the exhaust note, buying a $130k car for it's exhaust note is juvenile and the M5 is deliberately not "shouty" because it's a car aimed at executives not 25 year old youtubers. You can "get" your flawed E63S and if I really wanted to I'd out an Akrapovic exhaust on my M5 and it would sound brutal and then I'd have it all LOL. Fun fact though, neither you or I can afford these cars so it really doesn't matter. LOL Lord help you indeed. BTW I'd love to own a E63S, but if I had the money I'd choose the M5 Competition Pack. There is simply no competition to it.

    • @LilRick96
      @LilRick96 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@stubones lls im well aware that neither you and I can't afford these cars, but for ME and MY preference and the fact that I work around BMWs on a everyday basis, I can tell you what I MYSELF like and dislike more between the E63 and M5. So if I want a car that has a much better exhaust note, especially a High priced Luxury SPORTS sedan with a powerful V8, I want it to sound menacing and incredible from the factory, for MY pleasure. And if it's seem "Juvenile", then BMW should "deliberately" not make Sports cars because who ever would drive so sporty in their "EXECUTIVE" vehicles are childish and not "worthy" with adolescent mindset on going fast etc. Spare me with the pro BMW talk, I hear that crap enough from the salesman.

    M5 is the top choice. In the case of two out of three then BMW and the Caddy. Why? Because the sound of the supercharger is simply unique and the drivability of this thing is something extraordinary.

    Dude I have never seen you so excited at the beginning of the video especially. No question I would go M5 all the way. I would not put up with a sucky transmission at this price point and M5 is just hot.

    Definitely agree when your end note on the top 2 to choose. Between those 2 it's very difficult. I suspect AMG to fix the transmission for the facelift E-Class for next year. Let's hope!

      I've never read of or heard of a single complaint relating to the E63S transmission in any of the dozens of reviews I've seen until it was mentioned in this video.

      @@stubones maybe I put too much trust with Alex, but I usually trust his reviews. AMG isn't known for the best transmission, that'll go to Porsche's PDK, but their engines are insane. The closest thing I got to an "AMG" would be a GLE43 AMG loaner I had a few months ago which I thought shifted swiftly and smoothly.

      I think too many reviewers are awed by the performance and forgiving of the transmission. Owners I know have been much more critical...

    • @stubones
      @stubones 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I've never heard of anyone getting a real world 2.8s 0-60 (without rollout which is a cheat). 3 to 3.1s has been achieved and recorded. Even a M5 that had a remap to in excess of 700hp "only" achieved a 2.9s 0-60. To set the record straight on the 720S they have been recorded to 60 in 2.5s (no rollout).

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Car And Driver has also clocked a 2.8 with this new model. Our times are with rollout. I understand why some folks dislike the rollout method, however that is the most common way of describing 0-60 times. In our test of the 720S (video coming soon) traction is an issue and our best times were in the 2.8-2.9 second range with most runs being around 3.0

    • @khd8667
      @khd8667 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AAutoBuyersGuide with rollout 720 should hit 2.0 🤣

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Our tests with the 720 *were* with rollout. The issue is traction. That's why the Jeep Trackhawk does so well despite it being a cupcake shy of 3 tons. If the 720 was on a perfect surface, it would beat the M5 every single time. But that's not reality. In the real world you'll be hard pressed to get to 60 faster than the M5. However, the 720 makes SO MUCH power that by the time the 1/4 mile happens it has absolutely smoked the BMW.
