  • Affirmative action in higher education continues to be a hotly contested policy. In her talk, Michelle details the myriad ways in which American society has systematically worked to help white Americans and oppress African Americans. Michelle goes on to argue that knowing this history will help all Americans see the necessity of affirmative action policies. Michelle is a student at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, USA. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I understand her argument that sometimes policies affect more people of a certain race (systemic racism) and that the people who often don’t benefit from those policies are blacks, latinos... and I agree we should try to help everyone when implementing new policies BUT by implementing affirmative action their racially discriminating against groups(races) that work harder in general. In general asians study more and work harder because of their culture and parents(also culture) and other groups’ cultures aren’t very strict about non stop studying so the kids aren’t studying 24/7. Affirmative action racially discriminates groups and rigs the system(the TRUE systemic racism). We should never judge based on groups but judge based on the individual.

it’s pretty straightforward. It directly undermines placement based on merit. Therefore,it is reasonable for anyone to draw into question whether a benefactor of affirmative action is accepted at an Ivy League school due to merit alone. We cant punish people for the mistake of their ancestors. The only way to move past a conflict is to forgive. This has happend for almost every war ever. For example the civil war. Instead of punishing confederate states we choose to forgive them and the country healed. And today their is really no hate between northerners and southerners even though they were the responsible for the deaths of countless people. As a society we have to move past racial labeling and realize that we are all people.
