  • HP's ElitePad 1000 G2 tablet is a fairly functional quad core Atom processor with 4GB of DDR3 (currently) running Windows 10.
    I needed to take apart the tablet to refresh the battery; join me for a quick look inside the tablet to see what it has to offer.
    Update: And I've installed Linux on it in a new video! • ElitePad 1000 G2 Atom ...
    Update 2: This HP 1000 G2 technical service manual probably has more details than you need: h10032.www1.hp....

    I got 2 of these used today from eBay... Multiple issues and I probably blew my chance to return them by swapping parts. One had a screwed up battery and the other had a mangled connector so I swapped batteries and don't get a display now.... Slight differences on their motherboards too. For some of the cables, they push in instead of having the little lock you flip up to release them.

    Just an FYI here.
    Noticed my battery was only working for about 3 hours on a full charge with a date code of 2014. Purchased an Ebay "new pull" which I installed. I can see the new date code (2015) and serial number on the new battery BUT it will not charge. Trying to charge it again in BIOS mode just to see if it will charge up. I am able to return the "new pull" battery via Ebay. Ordered another new battery this morning. Also purchased another Elitepad for running Ubuntu Linux. I am currently doing a dual boot of Ubuntu 18.04 but the cameras do not work.

    • @PCBurn
      @PCBurn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, unfortunately Lithium batteries go flat if they're left dissipating charge too long. Check the voltage.
      At that point the risky option is to use a device designed to recondition them. Better to get a working replacement if it's just purchased.
      The camera isn't supported yet in-kernel, I believe I linked to the newly restarted Linux kernel support effort under the video on my experience installing linux.

With Ubuntu 18.04 touch works fine and is much faster than Windows 10; only the cameras do not work so redoing the build to Ubuntu 20.xx.

    Great video! I just have a question, as I have the same tablet and wanted to know before I tried opening it up, why does it say there are two batteries, and for me it always says battery 2 is "unavailable"...? It even says in the System Info in the BIOS that there are two and the 2nd is disconnected...
    am I missing something?

    • @PCBurn
      @PCBurn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's probably a battery peripheral available. The firmware on computers doesn't always refer to an installed option (i.e. hard drive settings in old BIOS).
      These tablets in particular were made for a laundry list of plug-in devices and commercial applications; the audio bus has settings for things that I've both never seen before and that are completely unrelated to audio.

    Hi, I have the exactly same model, after removing the battery from this tablet, I have tried to manually charge the battery with a smart charger but it just won't let me charge at all. The battery comes with 8pin black-black-blue-green-yellow-white-red-red. The blacks and reds are connected to each of the 3.7lipo cell, the others could be switches? Data? Clock? Temperature information to the system? Do you have the layout of the battery connector? Do I need to ground any of the pins In order to enable the connection to allow me to charge the battery? Thanks.

    • @PCBurn
      @PCBurn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're using an appropriate device that it's manufacturer has certified for restoring a battery from a discharged state you'll want to follow their directions. I would assume that anything suitable would warn you if the cells won't accept a charge but I'm not familiar with whatever you're using.
      They can fail, and if they've failed and you attempt to force a charge into them you'll cause a rather destructive explosion and fire with cells that large.

      You can check out the other video on loading up Linux onto the tablet. I believe I went over the BIOS options in there a bit. Although if you're getting an upgrade error internally it might be the case that you're not allowed.
      I won't install Windows 10 myself as it's not going to have enough space without using a compressed image (iirc) and Microsoft is starting to get a bit ... overly protective of its methodology for setting anything up. Or at least obfuscating it behind a blizzard of licensing. For an example see re-installing embedded Win-Anything without an extensive license agreement.

      Good question. I'm setting the tablet up to use with a Linux distribution on a swing-arm at my workbench. Since folks seem interested I'll try to do a quick setup and performance comparison on Windows/Linux to see how it operates out of the box and which Windows releases are useful.
      For Windows it'd be marginally useful due to the storage requirements. If you're willing to work around the rather large drive space needed in some way (older Windows release? embedded version?) then the performance would probably be good for the cost. The 4 core Atom Z3795 is still useful even if it's not good for compute intensive applications.

    • @PCBurn

      If you pull a display from any given tablet look for the part number of the display and punch it into Google or AliExpress. If there's an HDMI breakout someone's pre-configured for it, great.
      If there is no pre-made setup (in general) you don't. With some exceptions for more generic models no one makes a one-size-fits-all LVDS/eDP/etc cable for the multi-use HDMI drivers.
      If you learn what the logic they're using to drive the display it may be possible to get a generic HDMI adapter and build a custom cable. That'd be pretty advanced; if you go down that rabbit hole shoot a video and let us know!

      Cadex makes an automated set of devices to test, charge, and condition batteries (safely) that'll do this for you without doing a whole lot of learning. I'm told that Batteries Plus Bulbs stores may do this as a service so you may want to check with them for single batteries.
      www.cadex.com/en/products/battery-chargers
      www.batteriesplus.com/
      That relies on the battery being physically fine remember. Charging a battery with high resistance results in an explosion which those chargers monitor for.
      And battery university is an awesome resource to learn about chemistry if you'd like in-depth science: batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries
