      I used to carry Federal HST, then I asked two policemen I know, which ammo they carry on duty? and they both told me Speer Gold Dot. (I did not ask if it is provided by the town) Both types pass step 1 and 2 however I have not done the next three. I can do the water jug test, maybe I will try it. I am trying to simplify my life now that I’m getting older and can retire in 382 days. Bottom line is, if it is fine for the police to use, it should be fine for me. I also remember your video on hyper ammunition.

  • @thisguy6525
    @thisguy6525 4 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    Fun Fact : All the locations in this presentation are actually hi-res paintings done by Paul. For the actual shooting, a .17 air rifle was used and then George Lucas was hired to change the air rifle into a revolver in post. Normally, this would cost much more than just using the real ammo, but George did the work for free. When asked why someone like George Lucas would work on these videos, Paul would only say, “George knows why”. George was asked several time about this unusual collaboration, but would only shake his head, look at his feet, and try not to let Paul hear him sobbing.

    Thin skinned milk jugs (like the one paul uses here), have been a standard testing component for me for decades, glad to see that others like Paul view them as a viable initial test medium as well. And "initial" is just that. Of the criteria I have for my own testing, (and this is not meant as a tutorial or me giving you. . .) well, you know. I've never been one to justify the expense of time and money in using ballistic gel. But, I do get a very good idea of how a round is going to perform when I step up from the flimsy jug skin to a thin walled plastic 5 gal. bucket filled with water and the lid snapped firmly down in place. The wall of the bucket tends to resist splitting as quickly as the plastic jug, it does not flex or give as easily from it's normal shape which leads me to believe that lends itself to allowing the water inside to retain a greater resistance level to compression for a extra instant or so. If results look promising, I move on to using the ammo on the incidental farm pests that require being dealt with and observe the results from that. And obviously, accuracy is always the first test as well, without that, it's just emergency standby junk. Great video Sir!! Hope you can continue to dodge the "beer" brushfire that's playing pure hob with the world!!

    • @YouPlague
      @YouPlague 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, thin-skinned water jugs is pretty much what the intended target *points to self* is.

    • @jalan8171
      @jalan8171 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plastic water jugs serve very well as a consistent test medium and can be reproduced most any where in the world. The H2O test is as fair for projectile expansion as has ever been fabricated for the purpose comparing terminal ballistics performance. For fans of using ballistic jello, there is a wide variation of densities available. For this reason, the use of water jugs is as an objective and can be replicated under a range of conditions is one that serves quite well. Although not as entertaining as the meat target, it serves to demonstrate hydrostatic shock.

    Too be sure, that particular .44 Spl. load by grizzly was most likely within standard pressure range; @15,500 ft/lbs. The ft/sec velocity shown on the package could of been estimated for guns with 6-7" barrel lengths. As you presented in your .44 Spl. video a while ago, there are more powerful and effective factory rounds available on the market. The Special .44 shines in hand loads as proven by Elmer Keith, who may have enjoyed the 3" Ruger had it been around during his lifetime. The nice thing about this meat target setup is it simulates hitting flesh, muscle, bone, and clothing pretty well. I havent seen gel that can quite match that. I know it can simulate wound cavity, but as we saw in this video ribs and clothing can play a major factor in penetration/damage. While I'm not saying this is the end all be all way to test ammo, I enjoy seeing it stack up with other mediums since it can offer a "real world" simulation . If you only intend on shooting paper, its relatively useless but entertaining. If you plan on carrying and defending, it can steer you away from hype and get you down a solid road

      @el Guapo I still use FMJ for the range practice, but my sights are adjusted for my carry ammo. At the end of every range session I shoot 1 or 2 magazines of my carry ammo to verify my sights are still correct and to remind myself what the recoil of it feels like compared to the softer shooting FMJ range ammo.

      @@michaelsorenson3887 when you melt the gel back down for reuse you can put bones in it. When we poured it back into the pan / mold I used a dozen pork ribs tied with floss and knotted and attached to the grates in my outside fridge. Cut the floss when it firmed up a bit. If you use Clear ballistic gel I wouldn't recommend doing this after a couple remelts. But when it's towards the end of its life it's the perfect time to wreck it.

      Ballistic tip ammo is not designed nor reliable for close range. It's designed for long range. Got it?

      @@erikperrott7302 ...That's a joke, right? I might be with you if you were talking about accuracy at long range, then I could imagine that a ballistic tip would provide better aerodynamics, but if you're talking about being meant for expansion at long range instead of close... buddy, there's this little thing called the laws of physics...

    Thanks for the video!
    I agree that water jugs are the more plentiful and less expensive tool for holding water for the water jug testing. For myself, there's something about a cardboard carton like a milk carton. When I was a little kid, my aunt had a double-barreled BB gun, and when she let me shoot, she filled an empty milk carton with water for me. Seeing the water flowing out of those holes was a great thrill for me at six years old, and I still get a bit of a nostalgic feeling from shooting a cardboard carton filled with water. I don't drink milk much, but I like to buy Goldfish crackers in the big cartons. Those cartons will hold water, and I once shot my replica Remington New Model into a Goldfish carton filled with water. I was shooting a .454" ball, and I got a perfect flattening of the ball. The final diameter was over and inch. I think I had about 90% or 95% weight retention. I have some empty cartons. I need to fill them with water and shoot them soon.

    Paul, Wow man, Thanks a Lot for putting together this process you use for ammo selection. I was binging on your videos yesterday and was asking myself "How would I go about determining which ammo to put into these Mil-Surps I have been accumulating recently? Ever since we have been put on 'lockdown'. " Anyone else out there having this "problem" (tongue in cheek now. don't get weird on me.) Again I say Thank You Paul for the information you share with all of us. Please do not stop.
