I have very little knowledge of deer hunting, hence one of the reasons I'm watching PH's videos. However, after watching this one, a few questions came to mind. First, what are good methods to avoid becoming covered with ticks and other critters without filling the woods with the scent of insect repellent? Would the scent of insect repellent even matter? Also, along similar lines, what kind of snacks would be good to carry, and will the scent of said snacks either attract or repel deer? I did say I'm almost completely ignorant about deer hunting. Paul, if I could request a video, it would be one on issues such as these, kinda the incidentals of deer hunting, staying safe from disease, perhaps critters such as snakes, or other predators, more details on gear to protect from weather, etc.
Those are very good points for discussion. I'm planning on making a video of the deer hunt I will do during the upcoming season and I will be sure to include those things. But until then, the short version is: Wear insect repellent. The benefit outweighs the down side of the smell Snacks that contain things animals like are helpful like nuts, apples, etc. I'll pin your comment and we can get some input from other people.
About gear to protect from weather, I’d recommend wool clothing for cold climates. Wool is extremely good at maintaining warmth, and even providing warmth when it gets a little bit wet. So wool socks or a wool coat is a good investment if you’re gonna do a lot hunting in the cold.

Funny my cousin seems to have no problem hunting them there. His choice of projectile needs work. A Mustang front end rebuild is a bit expensive for each deer bagged tho. lol
My ex-father in law has killed so many deer that there would be no reliable way to count them accurately, and this man gave me so much advice. He was a deer genius. One thing he always pressed in my head was, that you ALWAYS take your gun with you when gutting your deer, because deer are so curious, that he says he has killed more deer while gutting an already dead deer he just shot than any other time. Also, he says he has killed more deer at about noon than any other time of the day, because a lot of hunters walk back to their camp or home for lunch, but he never would leave his blind from sun-up to sun-down, and would always shoot the deer that the lunch takers spooked up on their walk back. He also more or less said that all the products to kill scent and all of that are garbage, he would just light a cigarette and sit, and if anything the smell of his cigarette peaked the deer's curiosity and brought them in more so than if he had not lit the cigarette. One thing about him though, man could he sit still. Like dead still, all day long. This is in Michigan by the way where we hunt, and it's Whitetail deer.
Sitting still is the biggest feat. You could have lead with that and been done. If he dressed in a clown outfit with ballon animals all around his feet and simply sat still he'd still be a amazing hunter.
If I could add one piece of advice for hunting in cold weather during the late season it would be. Pack your heavier outer layers in and then put them on after you reach your chosen spot. If you get hot and sweaty in them as you're walking in you will get cold after stopping and you run the risk of getting sick or calling the hunt off early.
Yeah, and while you are dressing and struggling to get your heavy clothes on, you just spooked every deer in the whole area, and they just ran past a hunter waiting in his deer stand. Beam me up Scotty, no intelligent life here.
You can get dressed at your hunt sight, but not during daylight. Be in the woods before the deer leave their bedding area. Don't brush you teeth and don't have coffee before going out.
When I was a wee lad, a local farmer's cows kept getting shot during deer season. He started painting "COW" on the side of them, hopefully to keep them from being shot. People then shot through the "O".......
I think the people shot the cows on purpose, for the fun of it. They see an animal, I know they knew it wasn't a deer, they were like "oh let's get a cow" and they shoot at it.
In PA there was a farmer who started farm raising deer in a fenced in area. People would shoot the deer through the fence so the farmer gave up on deer. Just an empty fenced in lot now

A survivor Well when raising cattle is one thing. But I've read about times getting hard on the Rez and some natives would get a big hunting party and go out at night and hunt some slow elk. I think that would be more akin to cow hunting than popping them in a coral with a .22. Not very sportsman like, haha!!
I feel the same way about scopes. I hate lugging a rifle around through the woods with some accessory getting in the way. What gets me upset is that all the manufacturers are making it hard to find rifles that have sights on them anymore.
Exactly. I’ve heard they blame it on costs, but you can put a decent pair of iron sights on for $50 or even less. I mean come on. Most of my rifles are older anyways, so sights were pretty common luckily.
After the opening intro, the first ten seconds that showcased Paul's enthusiasm with the spider was more than enough to get a like from me on this one. Including the fact that he used a two dollar bill to demonstrate it's size comparison- I wasn't aware of anyone much other than myself who kept such a bank note on their person. So that detail along with showing the spider I thought was pretty cool. 👍
same here ... the Colorado mountains are full of fools drinking alcohol and shooting at anything that moves.... I'm certainly not getting involved in that
I really appreciate your videos. My grandfather, a WW2 Pacific vet, went deer hunting with a couple knuckleheads and almost lost his head when one of them misfired his rifle into the campfire. That was the last time he ever went hunting.

Man, I just subscribed last night and have been binge watching (12/20/17) and Mr. Harrell is the most informative firearms TH-camr I've seen. I like guys like Hickok45 and enjoy his humor and reviews, but he's not as informative and he doesn't hunt. I really like that when Mr. Harrell talks about something he isn't necessarily dogmatic about it, but points out the pros and cons. I'm in my 60s and don't have many hunts left in me as I'm also disabled somewhat, but I've been trying to get my son to take me Bison hunting on a ranch here in NM. These videos are helping me to convince him.lol My son reminded me of my hunting in CA for deer and not being very successful and then I bought a small "hobby farm" in Oklahoma and had deer in the garden outside my window, he asked me why I didn't shoot them and I said an old line from Rancid Crabtree, Shooting deer in yer own pea patch ain't no huntin' it's revenge.
I hunted with very careful, experienced people starting at age 11 and after the military I found it to become more difficult to find those I trust. Being trained well in my youth made me very serious, probably why I enjoy your professionalism. My dad was a drill sergeant and friends of the family state patrol. Most have past, including brothers of Vietnam so pretty much on my own today. Really like your style. Great company.
My daughters and I don't come from a hunting family; we've had to learn by trial and error and the 'knowledge' of folks at ranges, hunting / fishing stores etc in our small rural community...at least half of which doesn't make any sense; I sure appreciate the tips Paul has, the common sense, not knowledge, he imparts, and his 'show them' attitude. Thanks Paul! Because of you, our little trip is more ready than ever, and we've got tags for everything, just in case ;)
When I was young one of the older guys told us some things about hunting deer, where to go, what the deer do. Even what direction they would come from. Well 5 or 6 years later I'm home from the Army, I get my rifle and I know the spot on a ravine to go to. It's about 4:30 in the afternoon, I put out my smoke (not kidding, wind always came up the ravine, always) put down my coffee and picked up my rifle. And here they came, up the ravine the same time pretty much every day. You see they followed down the ravine across a long pasture to come out and eat with the local farmers cattle every day, he fed his cattle every day same time. Then back up the ravine. Over the years we harvested 3 to 5 every year in just our group. I haven't been back there in 30 years but if the cattle are being fed I know where the deer will be. The farmer just observed the habits the herd had developed in the fall.

My friend and I are getting into guns (Canada), we're waiting for our PPA to get in. We'll definitely going deer and black bear hunting (and other small game too). This video is very helpful for me. I've made a deposit on a used win 70 in 30-06. I believe it's going to get the job done. I'll be able to start shooting it in a few months and I hope I'll be ready for hunting season.
Another great video. Last year on opening day of gun season it was raining and windy. I sat in my stand for about half an hour after daylight. I realized it was perfect for still hunting. I went on the move and eased down my favorite path. Within 30 minutes I killed the biggest deer of my life. Great tactics Paul.
Thank you. I have gotten grief about not wearing camo because thats what everyone else does, but I got my first deer while wearing blue jeans, cowboy boots, ball cap and boston bruins sweatshirt. You dont need to be high tech to kill deer

I'd like to share 2 key things that I have learned while hunting over the years. #1 In most cases you have a better chance of harvesting while hunting alone. #2 if you are going to hunt with other people I highly advise to not hunt with people who like to drink while they hunt.
I shot my first roe buck a month ago, third time i was out. The only thing i did was; Sit still as a statue for 15 hours and drink coffe under complete silence. I paused at noon for a 20 minute nap, then back at it again. I was in a elevated hunting blind with a borrowed swedish mauser. I'm a complete amateur, but silence and stillness seems to work alright.

When going Deer hunting take along a couple good ink pens so when you retrieve your Deer , you can Tag it and Write what day , time of kill , and so on . I once forgot a pen , but everything turned out O.K. .

Mr. Harrell, has the best firearm/outdoor channel on TH-cam. I would urge others to help support his channel and his quest to end disinformation in the firearms world. I my self am about to hop over and make a donation to this, channel. It's worth the money to me.
Still the most underrated firearm channel. Anybody like Yankee Marshall enough to reply with some of Paul's links. He'd change his tune on some things I'm sure
Apart from some painfully obvious differences between these two channels I think Paul and the Yankee share the most important core values. For instance, none of them try to urge or motivate you to burn ammo at insane rates in insane quantities, like, well, almost every other tacticool channel does, including the not-so-tacticool hickok45. Both Paul and the Yankee try to use reasonable target sizes at reasonable distances, they emphasize the fact that a properly slow rate of fire and trying to make every shot count are more important than "quick follow up shots and high capacity", and they do not claim accuracies they are not able to achieve. Plus, the Yankee has been showing a slow but continuous development in his content, while Paul... well... I mean, where can one go from the top? :-)

Even if I'm not particularly interested in the subject title of a vid I always watch a Paul Harrell upload in it's entirety. I always enjoy it and come away with something useful.
sometimes you get prices at 1.99 or of a similar price that you would otherwise have to use 2 1$ notes for, or, since your talking about currency and you are largely a spawn of the french and the british, allot of your infastructure was taken from them, i dont know the history but i wouldnt be surprised if it came from the same reasoning. the british and the french used their pound stirling and franc respectively and both of them used the 2pound coin and a 2 franc coins respectively alongside their 1 pound/franc coins, and if you know anything about coins, the 2 value coin usualy weighs probs 2 or 4 grams lighter then 2 of the 1 value coins.. so, basicaly speaking it would weigh less and be of less burden when higher values would show up.. so likely has a thing to do with that as horse power and the mk1 set of legs were much more relevant back then.. and if you need a example, the british have a culture of collecting 1p, 2p and sometimes 5p and 10p coins.. just.. try picking up 5 pounds worth of 1p coins, 2p coins are not much better, 5p is allot better but still a pain, and 10p coins is a much better way of carrying them, if you cant use cash or 50p, 1pound, or 2 pound coins..
Great video. Your comment about scouting the area you want to hunt and using a trail cam is essential. I volunteer in a National Forest year-around. In our forest, you can't shoot on or over a hiking trail. Guess where the deer walk? I see deer tracks all the time on the hiking trails as brush can be very thick.
I saw a giant hairy looking recluse next to me while lying prone at fort Jackson SC while I was qualifying at the range, I took my AR 15 rifle butt and squished it, course I broke safety protocol and the drill Sgt came over to yell at me, then he took a look at the squished spider and walked away. It was probably a big wolf spider, it did have purplish looking stripes...LOL and everything looks like a violin.
Screw spiders. I got bitten by a brown recluse on the pinky and it stayed purple for years. I also had a red line running from the bite up my arm. A doctor told me some people are unaffected by them.
Really wasn't aware of the "bite". I wasn't really concerned with it, but my LT told me to see the CTMC doctor. Gave me some cream and some Naproxen. 2 days later it tripled in size, was a Friday, again my LT told me to see the doctor again, this time the guy was an ass, he "dressed me down" in front of some new Soldiers that happened to be outside his office. Weekend you can't goto the CTMC unless it's "Life, Limb or Eyesight", Monday morning I woke up with a fever, got up, pain hit me, stumbled forward, grabbed the handles on my wall locker. Well, those who know, they are "Dog Leg-ed" facing down, so my hands slipped off and I face planted. Showered, shaved was in some fucking pain, that small red bump 2 days ago was now a *BLACK* golf ball sized lump. Out of the shower I was shaving.. . The hot shower and standing was enough to start it to leak, when I bent my knee to look, it just ....ruptured, it was like red Smuckers Jelly with black and white chunks pumping with every heartbeat The more that came out, the better I felt from the pain in my knee to that fever dizzy feeling ...started to drift away. Ended up in the ER with a high fever, some Major started up my ass about not reporting it.... Sooo I let him know Dr. Jan Bond (

Acorns, at least in the areas of TN I hunted, seem to be bi-annual. I also found that on the years the did drop, getting deer was MUCH harder because the deer really didn't have to move much to fill up. I much preferred years that the oaks didn't drop.
Around here on opening day you really don't need to be quiet since there's half a million people out walking around and the deer are running all over the place in a panic. Big area of feed corn and a lot of farmers wait to harvest it just before opening day - the panicked deer head for the cover of the corn only it ain't there.
I could see why a deer woulden't bed down near a noisy stream because they coulden't hear anything sneaking up on them, you made some good points in this video, heres a few more for anyone that cares. 1.if you shoot a deer and it runs off wait atleast 30 minutes before looking for it, they also seem to head for water when hit. I normally will go home and get something to eat and then change to a shotgun or bush gun before tracking, if there hit in the guts they will go for miles if you keep going after them but if you don't they will most likely curl up under a tree and die. if anyone else wants some more tips ask me, im not a expert but I have lots of experience and love helping others.
Paul's list is good. I'll add a couple that helped me break my first 3 years in which I got skunked. 1) Where ever you hunt, be very still. Nothing in the woods is more visible than movement. I can remember my Papaw hunting in a ugly red flannel shirt. Didn't matter, he was still. 2) Be extremely quiet. Noise carries. You don't know when deer are 200 yards off, that you don't see. But, they can hear things that don't belong. 3) Deer really can blend in, so don't assume that since you just slowly scanned the area one isn't there. One year, I was in a stand about 200 yards from my Uncle. He had taken a shot at a deer and as soon as he did I saw the tails of about 20 deer that had slowly moved within 150 yards of me that I hadn't even noticed.
I've had pretty good luck just very slowly walking out into the woods. The area I hunt in is mostly medium sized hardwood trees with a little bit of underbrush. Lot of ridges and ravines, maybe 100 yards between ridgetops. The spot that I try to end up at is on the side of one of the ridges overlooking a pond, an old logging road, and 3 smaller ridges. It's only about 150 yards from the main-road, which makes hauling them out nice. I walk about 1/3 of the way in at a slow walking pace with a flashlight and then just stand still for a few minutes and let my eyes adjust a little bit while. Usually stand there until there is just enough light to see the sticks laying on the ground. Then take a step, wait a few minutes. Then take another step, stop and listen. Keep taking a step every minute or 2 with prolonged pauses in between. The deer will quite literally run right up on you. Last year took a little spike buck (thought it was a big doe) after being in the woods for about less than an hr, that was opening day too. Year before last I had a nice little 6 point buck stand about 20 yards away looking right at me and blow and stomp for about 5 minutes before moving off. Year before that dropped a big doe about 40 yards from where I took the one last year. Probably the same place I'll take one this year. Find a good spot, especially around a water hole, and they will do 95% of the work for you.
Bring a flamethrower every time. If you can't afford a flamethrower, make one with WD-40 or better yet get carburettor cleaner cus that shits super flammable. Fuck them.

Hi Paul, Enjoyed the vid as always. Just a fyi, in some states it is illegal to ride around spot lighting deer even if you don't have a firearm with you.
My top 5 for deerhunting 1)Get a decent scope with good light transmission 2)Get a good pair of binoculars like 8x56 or 6x42 3)Get acces to a scent-hound (even with deacent shots a deer can walk a couple of 100yards) 4)play the wind right 5)Just go Europe and experience some driven hunts instead...

Regarding batteries, I recommend testing primary and secondary batteries ahead of time. On several occasions I have seen fresh from the box (name brand batteries) have a low or no charge.....Thanks for the video!

Stalking - a lost art. Hunting used to be an action verb...until marketers of tree stands, deer lure, etc. found a new way to make money.
You should make a whole video of the dumb things you’ve heard from “expert” hunters, gun store salesmen, and enthusiasts over the years.
When I was a wee lad, a local farmer's cows kept getting shot during deer season. He started painting "COW" on the side of them, hopefully to keep them from being shot. People then shot through the "O".......
I think the people shot the cows on purpose, for the fun of it.
They see an animal, I know they knew it wasn't a deer, they were like "oh let's get a cow" and they shoot at it.
They thought the deer were wearing camo
In PA there was a farmer who started farm raising deer in a fenced in area. People would shoot the deer through the fence so the farmer gave up on deer. Just an empty fenced in lot now

But I've read about times getting hard on the Rez and some natives would get a big hunting party and go out at night and hunt some slow elk.
I think that would be more akin to cow hunting than popping them in a coral with a .22. Not very sportsman like, haha!!

I feel the same way about scopes. I hate lugging a rifle around through the woods with some accessory getting in the way. What gets me upset is that all the manufacturers are making it hard to find rifles that have sights on them anymore.

Exactly. I’ve heard they blame it on costs, but you can put a decent pair of iron sights on for $50 or even less. I mean come on. Most of my rifles are older anyways, so sights were pretty common luckily.

After the opening intro, the first ten seconds that showcased Paul's enthusiasm with the spider was more than enough to get a like from me on this one. Including the fact that he used a two dollar bill to demonstrate it's size comparison- I wasn't aware of anyone much other than myself who kept such a bank note on their person. So that detail along with showing the spider I thought was pretty cool. 👍

I really appreciate your videos. My grandfather, a WW2 Pacific vet, went deer hunting with a couple knuckleheads and almost lost his head when one of them misfired his rifle into the campfire. That was the last time he ever went hunting.

Man, I just subscribed last night and have been binge watching (12/20/17) and Mr. Harrell is the most informative firearms TH-camr I've seen. I like guys like Hickok45 and enjoy his humor and reviews, but he's not as informative and he doesn't hunt. I really like that when Mr. Harrell talks about something he isn't necessarily dogmatic about it, but points out the pros and cons. I'm in my 60s and don't have many hunts left in me as I'm also disabled somewhat, but I've been trying to get my son to take me Bison hunting on a ranch here in NM. These videos are helping me to convince him.lol My son reminded me of my hunting in CA for deer and not being very successful and then I bought a small "hobby farm" in Oklahoma and had deer in the garden outside my window, he asked me why I didn't shoot them and I said an old line from Rancid Crabtree, Shooting deer in yer own pea patch ain't no huntin' it's revenge.

I hunted with very careful, experienced people starting at age 11 and after the military I found it to become more difficult to find those I trust. Being trained well in my youth made me very serious, probably why I enjoy your professionalism. My dad was a drill sergeant and friends of the family state patrol. Most have past, including brothers of Vietnam so pretty much on my own today. Really like your style. Great company.
My daughters and I don't come from a hunting family; we've had to learn by trial and error and the 'knowledge' of folks at ranges, hunting / fishing stores etc in our small rural community...at least half of which doesn't make any sense;
I sure appreciate the tips Paul has, the common sense, not knowledge, he imparts, and his 'show them' attitude.

When I was young one of the older guys told us some things about hunting deer, where to go, what the deer do. Even what direction they would come from. Well 5 or 6 years later I'm home from the Army, I get my rifle and I know the spot on a ravine to go to. It's about 4:30 in the afternoon, I put out my smoke (not kidding, wind always came up the ravine, always) put down my coffee and picked up my rifle. And here they came, up the ravine the same time pretty much every day. You see they followed down the ravine across a long pasture to come out and eat with the local farmers cattle every day, he fed his cattle every day same time. Then back up the ravine. Over the years we harvested 3 to 5 every year in just our group. I haven't been back there in 30 years but if the cattle are being fed I know where the deer will be. The farmer just observed the habits the herd had developed in the fall.
God man, you are such a great teacher, really love the videos and your objective approach. It makes the few times you DO give your own opinion really interesting to hear as well as consider for personal testing :)

My friend and I are getting into guns (Canada), we're waiting for our PPA to get in. We'll definitely going deer and black bear hunting (and other small game too). This video is very helpful for me. I've made a deposit on a used win 70 in 30-06. I believe it's going to get the job done. I'll be able to start shooting it in a few months and I hope I'll be ready for hunting season.

Another great video. Last year on opening day of gun season it was raining and windy. I sat in my stand for about half an hour after daylight. I realized it was perfect for still hunting. I went on the move and eased down my favorite path. Within 30 minutes I killed the biggest deer of my life. Great tactics Paul.

Thank you. I have gotten grief about not wearing camo because thats what everyone else does, but I got my first deer while wearing blue jeans, cowboy boots, ball cap and boston bruins sweatshirt. You dont need to be high tech to kill deer
In Wisconsin, we have to wear blaze orange. We still kill a lot of deer, even though we all look like giant pumpkins.

I'd like to share 2 key things that I have learned while hunting over the years.
#1 In most cases you have a better chance of harvesting while hunting alone. #2 if you are going to hunt with other people I highly advise to not hunt with people who like to drink while they hunt.

I shot my first roe buck a month ago, third time i was out. The only thing i did was; Sit still as a statue for 15 hours and drink coffe under complete silence. I paused at noon for a 20 minute nap, then back at it again. I was in a elevated hunting blind with a borrowed swedish mauser. I'm a complete amateur, but silence and stillness seems to work alright.

When going Deer hunting take along a couple good ink pens so when you retrieve your Deer , you can Tag it and Write what day , time of kill , and so on . I once forgot a pen , but everything turned out O.K. .
A zip tie is good for attaching the tag.
😂 Speaking of spiders, I was just out hunting in GA and nearly walked right into several Joro spiders (Trichonephila clavata). Them suckers are huge!

Mr. Harrell, has the best firearm/outdoor channel on TH-cam. I would urge others to help support his channel and his quest to end disinformation in the firearms world. I my self am about to hop over and make a donation to this, channel. It's worth the money to me.
Still the most underrated firearm channel. Anybody like Yankee Marshall enough to reply with some of Paul's links. He'd change his tune on some things I'm sure
Apart from some painfully obvious differences between these two channels I think Paul and the Yankee share the most important core values. For instance, none of them try to urge or motivate you to burn ammo at insane rates in insane quantities, like, well, almost every other tacticool channel does, including the not-so-tacticool hickok45. Both Paul and the Yankee try to use reasonable target sizes at reasonable distances, they emphasize the fact that a properly slow rate of fire and trying to make every shot count are more important than "quick follow up shots and high capacity", and they do not claim accuracies they are not able to achieve. Plus, the Yankee has been showing a slow but continuous development in his content, while Paul... well... I mean, where can one go from the top? :-)

Get a stack of them and put rubber cement on the side. When you go to use one peel one out
sometimes you get prices at 1.99 or of a similar price that you would otherwise have to use 2 1$ notes for, or, since your talking about currency and you are largely a spawn of the french and the british, allot of your infastructure was taken from them, i dont know the history but i wouldnt be surprised if it came from the same reasoning.
the british and the french used their pound stirling and franc respectively and both of them used the 2pound coin and a 2 franc coins respectively alongside their 1 pound/franc coins, and if you know anything about coins, the 2 value coin usualy weighs probs 2 or 4 grams lighter then 2 of the 1 value coins.. so, basicaly speaking it would weigh less and be of less burden when higher values would show up.. so likely has a thing to do with that as horse power and the mk1 set of legs were much more relevant back then..
and if you need a example, the british have a culture of collecting 1p, 2p and sometimes 5p and 10p coins.. just.. try picking up 5 pounds worth of 1p coins, 2p coins are not much better, 5p is allot better but still a pain, and 10p coins is a much better way of carrying them, if you cant use cash or 50p, 1pound, or 2 pound coins..
Great video. Your comment about scouting the area you want to hunt and using a trail cam is essential. I volunteer in a National Forest year-around. In our forest, you can't shoot on or over a hiking trail. Guess where the deer walk? I see deer tracks all the time on the hiking trails as brush can be very thick.

Almost lost my leg.
I saw a giant hairy looking recluse next to me while lying prone at fort Jackson SC while I was qualifying at the range, I took my AR 15 rifle butt and squished it, course I broke safety protocol and the drill Sgt came over to yell at me, then he took a look at the squished spider and walked away. It was probably a big wolf spider, it did have purplish looking stripes...LOL and everything looks like a violin.
Screw spiders. I got bitten by a brown recluse on the pinky and it stayed purple for years. I also had a red line running from the bite up my arm. A doctor told me some people are unaffected by them.
Really wasn't aware of the "bite".
I wasn't really concerned with it, but my LT told me to see the CTMC doctor. Gave me some cream and some Naproxen.
2 days later it tripled in size, was a Friday, again my LT told me to see the doctor again, this time the guy was an ass, he "dressed me down" in front of some new Soldiers that happened to be outside his office.
Weekend you can't goto the CTMC unless it's "Life, Limb or Eyesight", Monday morning I woke up with a fever, got up, pain hit me, stumbled forward, grabbed the handles on my wall locker.
Well, those who know, they are "Dog Leg-ed" facing down, so my hands slipped off and I face planted.
Showered, shaved was in some fucking pain, that small red bump 2 days ago was now a *BLACK* golf ball sized lump. Out of the shower I was shaving.. . The hot shower and standing was enough to start it to leak, when I bent my knee to look, it just ....ruptured, it was like red Smuckers Jelly with black and white chunks pumping with every heartbeat
The more that came out, the better I felt from the pain in my knee to that fever dizzy feeling ...started to drift away.
Ended up in the ER with a high fever, some Major started up my ass about not reporting it.... Sooo I let him know Dr. Jan Bond (

Find a big old Oak tree between crop fields next to a stream - gtg. Deer love them acorns.
Acorns, at least in the areas of TN I hunted, seem to be bi-annual. I also found that on the years the did drop, getting deer was MUCH harder because the deer really didn't have to move much to fill up. I much preferred years that the oaks didn't drop.
Yeah you can't get near them - but you know where they're likely headed to and can wait for some to come in from the fields.
Around here on opening day you really don't need to be quiet since there's half a million people out walking around and the deer are running all over the place in a panic. Big area of feed corn and a lot of farmers wait to harvest it just before opening day - the panicked deer head for the cover of the corn only it ain't there.

I could see why a deer woulden't bed down near a noisy stream because they coulden't hear anything sneaking up on them, you made some good points in this video, heres a few more for anyone that cares.
1.if you shoot a deer and it runs off wait atleast 30 minutes before looking for it, they also seem to head for water when hit. I normally will go home and get something to eat and then change to a shotgun or bush gun before tracking, if there hit in the guts they will go for miles if you keep going after them but if you don't they will most likely curl up under a tree and die. if anyone else wants some more tips ask me, im not a expert but I have lots of experience and love helping others.
Maybe I'll have a little more luck this year with these tips
Paul's list is good. I'll add a couple that helped me break my first 3 years in which I got skunked.
1) Where ever you hunt, be very still. Nothing in the woods is more visible than movement. I can remember my Papaw hunting in a ugly red flannel shirt. Didn't matter, he was still.
2) Be extremely quiet. Noise carries. You don't know when deer are 200 yards off, that you don't see. But, they can hear things that don't belong.
3) Deer really can blend in, so don't assume that since you just slowly scanned the area one isn't there. One year, I was in a stand about 200 yards from my Uncle. He had taken a shot at a deer and as soon as he did I saw the tails of about 20 deer that had slowly moved within 150 yards of me that I hadn't even noticed.
I've had pretty good luck just very slowly walking out into the woods. The area I hunt in is mostly medium sized hardwood trees with a little bit of underbrush. Lot of ridges and ravines, maybe 100 yards between ridgetops. The spot that I try to end up at is on the side of one of the ridges overlooking a pond, an old logging road, and 3 smaller ridges. It's only about 150 yards from the main-road, which makes hauling them out nice. I walk about 1/3 of the way in at a slow walking pace with a flashlight and then just stand still for a few minutes and let my eyes adjust a little bit while. Usually stand there until there is just enough light to see the sticks laying on the ground. Then take a step, wait a few minutes. Then take another step, stop and listen. Keep taking a step every minute or 2 with prolonged pauses in between. The deer will quite literally run right up on you. Last year took a little spike buck (thought it was a big doe) after being in the woods for about less than an hr, that was opening day too. Year before last I had a nice little 6 point buck stand about 20 yards away looking right at me and blow and stomp for about 5 minutes before moving off. Year before that dropped a big doe about 40 yards from where I took the one last year. Probably the same place I'll take one this year. Find a good spot, especially around a water hole, and they will do 95% of the work for you.
Fk its almost time to do the dreaded cleaning out all the stands. Hate wasp nests and they love stands.
Bring a flamethrower every time.
If you can't afford a flamethrower, make one with WD-40 or better yet get carburettor cleaner cus that shits super flammable.
Fuck them.

Hi Paul, Enjoyed the vid as always. Just a fyi, in some states it is illegal to ride around spot lighting deer even if you don't have a firearm with you.

My top 5 for deerhunting
1)Get a decent scope with good light transmission
2)Get a good pair of binoculars like 8x56 or 6x42
3)Get acces to a scent-hound (even with deacent shots a deer can walk a couple of 100yards)
4)play the wind right
5)Just go Europe and experience some driven hunts instead...

Regarding batteries, I recommend testing primary and secondary batteries ahead of time. On several occasions I have seen fresh from the box (name brand batteries) have a low or no charge.....Thanks for the video!
