Once I thought my muffler was bad, took it to a shop, they wanted to charge me $600, said my catalytic converter was bad.
A friend of mine suggested I use the shop she uses, took my car in, the mechanic looked under the car, found I had a broken bolt connecting the muffler, fixed it in 5 minutes and did not charge me. Have used that shop since.

It’s so hard to find reliable people to do anything anymore. I had my regular mechanic tell me twice that work I had done by someone else was never really done. Made me sick.

@Matthew Caughey True. I have a small mechanic shop I goto. They give me a fair price, and I've never had an issue after the work. I recommend them to everyone.
On the other hand, I went to Midas once and they told me I needed $1500 worth of work done when all I needed was spark plugs. I tell people to avoid them like the plague whenever mechanics are brought up. I doubt I'll ever goto a chain auto shop again.

I had once a shop try to sell me all new valves because of the engine belt snapping. Since it had an 3S-fe engine i KNEW it could not ever snap the valves. They allegedly tried measuring cyl pressures and they were all off.
What was happening is that the put on the belt incorrectly. So i said i want the car back.
And when the car was returned it was lacking any coolant. Even though they charged me for it.

@EVS My wife was low key gonna go to a dealership for an oil change because of the usual free warranty (my mother had bad service from a Ford dealership, years prior). Never knew said dealership, and told her that I didn't care if I had to pay for it, we have a friend down the road that can take care of it. That was just after I had learned her new car went 14000 miles without a change.

This is exactly why I went into the auto repair business 20 years ago. I was actually a commercial parts sales manager. The local shops would buy parts from me for a little less than their customers could walk in and buy them for, mark them up between 50% to 75% tell them the parts came from the dealer, then charge crazy labor on top of it. I would get so many complaints coming from local customers that these shops would never fix their cars right it was horrible. I finally got fed up and started out on my own. I fight everyday to try to make sure people don't get ripped off in this area. Unfortunately I cant save them all, but even if I keep one person from getting taken advantage of I feel better.

Lots of violent men in prisons also. Some of them are honest men who defended a member of the public but took things a little too far. Or simply got into a fight. Non of these crimes involve disshonesty.

I feel like I am the last honest person left. When I did computer repairs I never rounded up 15 minute jobs to an hour like others do. I have yet to see a mechanic that doesn't round up. Now you have these plumbers, electricians and HVAC guys who put you on the clock as soon as they get in their van. I would like to see a reporter follow some of them and see how often they stop off at the coffee shop first on your dime.

    • @PGIFilms
      @PGIFilms 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

***** I Agree with you on this one. I think it's reasonable to charge maybe a $20-$25 flat consultation fee if a mechanic/technician/plumber/contractor has to come to your place in order to inspect the issue and provide an estimate. I have a friend that does mechanical/construction/handyman work, if he happens to over at my place and I ask him to check something out for me, he'll do it without asking for anything, that part of doing favors for friends, but I actually call him and ask him to come over and check something out for me, I'm going to at least offer him $10 for gas and for taking the time to come out, then leave it up to him whether he wants to actually take it. That hour or two he took to swing by is still time he could have used working on actual paying projects or actually take a break from working on projects. If I call someone for a consultation I ask what their consultation fee is, and if it's $25 or less I wouldn't mind paying it, that's a fair price to pay to someone that is knowledgable, skilled, licensed/certified, and running a professional business.
I wish I could charge a $10 consultation fee during the tax season where I work, but the company wont allow it. We all get these bullshit clients that come in with documents for investments, retirement plans, itemized deductions, small businesses, rental properties, etc. that are considered "complex returns" we spend AT LEAST an hour doing the tax return only to have them say, "We'll let me think about whether I want to have you file my taxes yet." then they take all their document and leave. All of those clients that do that, they think we're fucking stupid, that we don't know what they're doing. We know exactly what they are doing, they're price shopping and/or checking our results against the results the have at home so they can file for free doing it themselves. If the company would charge just a $10 consulting fee, maybe even a $5 consulting fee, it would go a long way to stopping people from wasting our time trying to get something for nothing.

Last week I took my truck to the reputable shop that I always go to to have a simple oil change. Being the good guys that they are they looked my engine over and found that my "radial spark stabilizers" had gone bad on both banks. On the invoice here it shows that they were $175.90 a piece plus labor . . . but hey if they said they gotta be replaced they gotta be replaced; apparently not doing so will cause the engine to go into "hyper knock mode". If this happens, well . . . I can't really explain it, they used a lot of technical terms (these guys really know their stuff), but its something bad that could ruin the engine. At least they didn't have to order them because they said they had a set on the shelf in back. Didn't take long at all for them to be installed and then I was on my way.

That being said the whole legal system itself is designed by lawyers to be profitable to them so they don't really need to break any rules.

Starting from forging thousands of signatures (mostly for convenience) to pretending to be someone else on the phone, to outright giving false testimony as a supposed witness at trial. All in the interest of our clients, who were always very happy with the results. The truth didnt matter because the truth was only what we could prove or disprove it to be
The thing is, everyone in the industry lies. An honest lawyers is a very shitty lawyer because he will be playing a game against cops/insurance adjusters/doctors/other lawyers who ALL will lie and therefore have a huge advantage.
I dont think the legal system is designed with a purpose to profit lawyers, I think that (successful) lawyers simply had developed ways to break rules without getting caught

John barfneck And it's not only happening in the car business, trust me. We had a small roof damage after a storm, nothing big but it needed a fast repair that I couldn't do myself. The insurance company covered it, all good there, and we asked a professional repair company to do the job. Low and behold, when the dude made the offer, he tried to charge us personally (from our own pocket, not from the insurance company) over €3000 - that's about $2700-$2800 if I'm correct - for stuff that wasn't even broken to start off with, and only for one side of the house. If we wanted to have the other side repaired as well, it would have been at least €6000, from our own pockets. On top of what he was going to charge the insurance company with (about €1000 for the original damage), of course. He mentioned leaks everywhere, ripped zinc everywhere, bad drain pipes, rotten wood,.... you name it. We declined his offer, and asked to only repair the stuff that was broken due to the storm and what the insurance was covering. Needless the say he never showed up again. When we got a second professional company for the repairs, I told them what the first guy had told us and how much money has was demanding. He looked at me as if I was some crazy alien or something. There was absolutely nothing wrong with all the extra things the first dude had mentioned. In fact, all those things had been just replaced months before we bought the house, as we found out that same day (found the paperwork with all the invoices).

I've been in this position. Took my car in to have the tracking done to be told that they couldn't do the tracking as it needed new wishbones, at a cost of nearly £250. Well what they didn't know was, I personally, had replaced both those and the ball joints two months prior to them telling me this. I just laughed at them and told them that under no circumstance would they need replacing. Took my car to another garage to double check the wishbones (as it always puts doubt in your mind) and not a single fault was found with them. I logged a complaint with the first garage who gave me all the excuses under the sun but eventually caved, apologised, did my tracking for free and also threw in two brand new tyres for my inconvenience. Win win.

Purposely blowing a fuse and reinstalling it will mislead a repair technician. When a fuse blows, there's usually a problem that causes the fuse to blow. They do not blow on their own. Rarely do they fail internally as in a broken connection inside the fuse which is a different kind of failure. An intermittent problem can cause a fuse to blow. Intermittent problems can be very difficult to find. The fuse to my tail lights (and dash lights) kept blowing every few days (brake & turn signals are on a different fused circuit). Eventually found an intermittent short inside the trailer wire connector on my van without a trailer connected. Replacing the fuse of course does not fix the root cause of the problem. Simply replacing a blown fuse will usually cause a repeat service call and a customer won't like that extra charge. In over 53 years of driving and doing most of my own maintenance on my own cars and working in electronics and electricity, I can't remember when a fuse failed on its own.

Circuits are normally fused for 2x the current load. That prevents nuisance fuse blows due to transients that will occur when you fuse too close to the normal current draw for that circuit. Fuses don't protect a component, they protect the wiring to avoid fires. Sure, check the current so that you might learn that the incorrect fuse was installed. That happens.

As a person who despises rip-off mechanics and probably knows more about vehicles than half the licensed techs out there I am still going to point out that a blown fuse can very well be an indication of a wiring or more serious problem.
If a healthy fuse blows it was for a reason and doing what it is intended to do.
Protect from a short or overload.
Just like if a breaker trips in your home it means something is wrong.
    That should have been addressed.

    • @AutoInnovations1

Replace the fuse, if it doesn't blow after testing the circuit thoroughly, advise customer to return if it does happen again, the tech needs to look for a short to ground, intermittent component failure etc..... Simple! Or wait wait...you could buy one of those ms300 thingy mabobs and it will tell you exactly whats wrong with your vehicle. People there is a reason honest repair shops spend lots and lots of money on diagnostic equipment to justify charging 90-100.00 dollars for their time.
Find the right and honest repair shop by talking to friends, family, co-workers and you will find a needle in a hay stack. Word of mouth is the best advertisement and honest repair shops depend and stand by it....

When you get a used car, for some reason they all have blown fuses.
I've only ever once had a car where I replaced a fuse and it kept blowing, turned out to be a short.
But fuses endure constant movement and rattling, and they get old and corrode, with a fatigued conductor and surface corrosion causing high resistance a fuse can easily blow because the fuse went bad.
Also home circuits aren't planned like car circuits. A home can trip a breaker because you used the 20 candelabra chandelier while using a shop vac. Or because you used the dishwasher and the garbage disposal at the same time.
Anyone who wouldn't first replace the fuse and see what's going on isn't diagnosing the issue.
If the first thing you do when you see a blown fuse is start tearing apart the wiring harness you're an idiot.

It seems like every mechanic i bring my car to when my engine light is on does this to me, but I have an obd2, and they like to say shit like "well our obd2 is of better quality," or "you can go else where if you dont like it." One mechanic told me i couldnt leave till it was fixed, he was pissed when i called the cops and had my brother bring my obd2 to the shop. More like the bad apple have rotted the barrel and now there's only a few good apples left.

After 25 years I am changing mechanic shops. The front desk people try to cover for incompetent mechanics. They lie to my face . . . I have reversed their diagnostics a couple times, resulting in 'no charge' on my bill . . . the last straw was a tune-up with incompetent spark plug installation. One time I redid a $400 labor charge, changing the part in 20 minutes. Recently, the car was bucking and misfiring after a routine spark plug swap . . . they failed twice to correct, blaming broken plastic parts . . . I asked, 'Did you remember to use di-electric grease at the coil boots? A look of realization hit the service manager's eyes and he ran back to the shop. I think he helped the inexperienced mechanic remove the coil boots, check for di-electric grease, apply, and reinstall . . . the car works fine now. But, that is much of the problem; there is a shortage of experienced/trained techs. With hourly rates doubling to over $100/hr, this is concerning.

Eventually found an intermittent short in the trailer wire connector.

    • @Puckgrinder85
      @Puckgrinder85 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@MaKoGaMeR 2017 No, this isn't a house circuit breaker. They don't get weak and just blow from age. They are a sacrificial piece of metal to save the wiring from melting down and taking the car with it in a ball of flame. Yea, they blow because of an overloaded circuit (a problem!). Corrosion can ruin them but that's a whole other topic and if one fuse is corroded you likely have a full fuse block of them. The guy you are replying to probably isn't condoning what the video shows, but a blown fuse usually carries a deeper seated issue, one that may not be apparent right away and may be intermittent, and that's what he's trying to convey. It's slightly underhanded as a "plant" problem because that's not a typical issue, although that rolling into my shop would have been putting a new fuse in and saying "hey, it's working now but the fuse was blown and it may blow again if there IS an issue we find at the moment".. They would have been better off just cutting a wire and having them try to find and fix that.
