As a plumber, this is sad. There are so many plumbers and other service workers out there that the only thing they care about is making a ton of money and not caring about the customer at all.
I live in this general area and I can tell you there are a ton of crooks in all the trades out here. My septic tank was full and a plumbing company told me all my pipes were bad and it was going to cost $6,600 to dig them all up and replace them. Had the septic tank emptied for $150.00 and everything is fine now.
To be honest, seeing water at the bottom of a water heater _can_ be a sign of the tank corroding. However, an honest plumber would check the connections. It's as simple as running your fingers along the connections to feel if they're wet.
I became a plumbing apprentice 5 months ago and the problem with the plumbing industry is that many people are uneducated in how to work on their own plumbing systems. Many companies that do professional plumbing have slowly evolved over the years into organizations that are focused on getting as many high ticket sales as possible-instead of just trying to fix someone’s problems.
I wonder how many of these guys are actual real scammers or just people that have no fucking clue how to do their job and legit think that the heater tank isn't fixable
Ya, but then they're scammers calling themselves plumbers. Without being licensed, or at least knowing the craft, you're just a handyman that prays stuff doesn't leak again until after you've left.
You know what I learned? NEVER EVER leave a worker alone. Sit near them and watch them work. Plus make sure they're LICENSED. Once you confirm their licensed, sit in the basement while they work, sit in the garage while they fix something in the garage.
Kelly Maguire nothing more annoying than a homeowner breathing down your neck the whole time.. takes longer to do the job and adds the stress of being watched like a hawk just trying to do your job
Humorous LOL sitting watching is fine, today I had a man literally grabbing tools out of my bag handing them to me without me asking or wanting and getting in the way. No problem with u in the background.
I can't believe he's whining about how he has a family to take care of and he's "just doing his job", while he scams people who may be in his same position. What about the people you're ripping off? They're down a completely unnecessary $700 for a new water heater they don't need. The people he's scamming are likely also hard workers just trying to do their jobs and support their families. He knows exactly what he's doing.
What's more amazing is how stupid their reasons for the new water heater are. Like I'm 22, never been to college, live in an apartment, and I know that's bullshit.
I have a major problem with this sting operation. By doing what they are doing, loosening the supply lines, they are allowing water to run into the water heater. This makes all the insulation between the outer shell and the tank wet, (models with fiberglass insulation). They are also allowing water to come in contact with the electrical components of the heater. as well as holding moisture against the untreated outside of the tank. (on both fiberglass and foam insulated heater). All this is going to cause problems down the line...and yes including possible explosion...not a fiery explosion and I doubt it would take down part of the garage, but an explosion non the less. Not to mention that when the tech comes to the unit to diagnose there will be noticeable water signs on the inside bottom the unit, usually a tell tale sign of tank failure. With them loosening the supply and allowing water to run through the inside of the heater it makes an accurate diagnosis almost impossible. If I was called to this job I would have tightened the connection, informed the homeowner what I found, and would suggest a replacement also, because of the damage done due to the water infiltration and not being able to diagnose if the tank has failed or not. I feel I would not be doing my job if I didn't suggest the new tank, there is just not enough airflow through the inside of the unit dry the moisture in time without causing damage. In my mind the techs that did not suggest a replacement are the bad techs. I do realize the techs in this feature are not shown to be doing any kind of diagnoses past seeing the loose connection, but did we see the whole story or what dateline wanted us to see. I would not push that the unit be replaced, but I would definitely suggest it, this story with this particular set up, is almost designed to guarantee that they can make a tech look dishonest for their story, and in my mind ruin this water heater.
uh their expert was the one who recommended that fault, I'd assume him being an expert and all he wouldn't have suggested that particular fault unless it was safe to do but hey I'm not an expert I'm just going by my common sense.
papashaq1 I would also check for the amount of sediment at the bottom of the tank. With the huge mold scare most people will want the heater replaced. I was a nice guy in the past, only to have the water heater let go a week later, me receiving a phone call from a pissed off client who response was why did you not replace it when you were here, plus all the water damage. Never again.
Water tanks won't explode. Water is incompressible and will release it's pressure after the first drop comes out of the tank. After that it just flows out of the tank under the water line pressure... no more violent than from a garden hose sprayer.
@@ecomotive6158 you better check your sources my friend. Why do you think they install temp &PRESSURE relief valves then? Water heaters can and do explode, albiet rare.
This happens every day. Scam so-called plumbers who flunked out of college basket weaving that don't know "hot's on the left, cold's on the right and $#!t don't run up hill!🤣
We want customers to feel comfortable with us working in their homes and so all our tradesmen are chosen based on their interpersonal skills as well as their ability to complete the task in hand effectively.
I worked at Servpro, would mitigate water Damages and such. Every time the water heater was the leak or flood it would just get replaced. It's most of the time covered by insur. In this event but it leaves me wondering, how many were actually "bad". Lol
Okay, i'm gonna play the devils advocate here for a second. Why would a fitting suddenly come loose? As a plumber walking into a situation like that and water has suddenly started to leak from a water heater it's safe to assume that the tank is leaking. The tank in these units is completely sealed and the only two opening are the two fittings at the top. Fitting don't just loosen up on their own and I've never, ever heard of one loosing up any way other than with a wrench. These plumbers might actually be scumbags, but this particular scenario was a poor way of rooting them out. They should have let them bring a new water heater out and when the guys went to remove the fittings they might have discovered that one was loose and fixed their mistake.
Nick Fotopoulos I think there would be better ways of setting plumbers up but those plumbers that are shown should know that those supply lines have a washer that gets worn, and in plumbing thats a very common problem, tightening it would be the first diagnosis, and even if they legitimately thought the tank was leaking, they need to check warranty to see if manufacturer covers it. And water heater exploding part lol, if its already seeping its not going to explode, theres multiple factors for the plumber to know that, one they need to first check how much pressure is in the home, most homes with 60-80 PSI won't have a exploding water heater issue, theres much more complicated factors that take place for that to happen. Either they are dumb plumbers or legit crooked and I'm leaning toward legit crooked.
***** Yea but the galvanize part is on the water heater. If that corrodes then the solution is a new water heater. I still contend that it's perfectly reasonable to assume that a new water heater is needed. The fittings would only be loose if someone intentionally loosened them, and that only happens when your on a Chris Hanson show. I think their "expert plummer" should have come up with a better test for these guys...
Nick Fotopoulos It happened to me about three years ago. My wife told me there was a puddle of water in our garage. I looked, and found that very same nut loose on our hot water heater. I'm not sure why it became loose, but it did. And while I'm not a plumber, I do know that the first thing you do when you see a leak is try to figure out where the water came from. You can't just assume it's the heater.
Nick Fotopoulos The thing is though, none of those plumbers even took the time to look at the water heater. They walked in and started talking on their phones or just hanging out with each other until they felt they killed enough time and could walk back in and steal a great deal of easy money.
Don the guy at the end was for some unknown reason hired by a company i worked for to teach sales. Well im in HVAC but i knew a couple plumbers and that turned me on to this episode witch just confirmed what i had already figured out. He told us in one of his B.S. meetings whenever the customer ask for the price just tell them "For what i do I'm the cheapest in the valley" still makes me laugh. Some how the video got around and he was gone.
Being a licseened contractor in California. I heard it mentioned that the water heater was three years old. You need to check the original contractor who did not install it with a earthquake strapping kit.
While I like seeing these jerks get caught in the act, the title is misleading. I didn't really learn how to "Spot a Plumbing Scam." All I've learned is to check the nut on the funny looking hose at the top if there's a leak. Beyond that, I'd have to trust a possible con-artist.
This happens everyday, Make no mistake about it, Everyone should run a check on every service technician working for a repair company to verify how many people in there company are actually licensed by the state, you would be shocked how many companies even larger ones have only one licensed plumber within the whole company and a lot of the time that licensed plumber is the one sitting in an office while all the non licensed workers are the one coming to fix your pipes!
Had the same thing here in Melbourne Australia with a plumber trying to sell me a whole new water heater when all that was needed was a new overflow valve.
Yes a water heater can blow up, like a small bomb, it has a tank under pressure, should the pressure check valve fail so will the tank when enough pressure builds.
+homerun443 What does "tearn" mean? Tear? Actually it sure can blow the wall out, I knew a family that had a 60gal blow up in their basement and take out half the bed room above it and part of the roof, all because the safety relief valve was screwed up.
+Patrick TheBaptist Since the system is leaking, the pressure is being released. While possible, hard to believe the pressure relief valve here was not functional, and could easily have been checked to see if it functioned or there was excessive pressure. I definitely wouldn't have told her that her garage could explode, without first having more to go on than seeing water leaking from somewhere I wasn't sure about.
Weltall8000 I wasn't defending the scam or the scammer, just only that it's a fact a water heater can explode like a small bomb and that was it, NOTHING MORE. "I definitely wouldn't have told her that her garage could explode, without first having more to go on than seeing water leaking from somewhere I wasn't sure about." Me either, and I would have checked the connections first thing anyways, and I'm not even close to a plumber, but I do my own.
If its been leaking for a long period of time to spite what caused it the water heater could be damaged the plumbers we're taking precautions. Whould you reather pay for the reassurance that its been replaced or worry about the house flooding?
Adrian was honest once a water heater goes bad from corrosion there’s not much hope for it you can tell they really tried to make him look bad took all the procedures right and still tried to call to see if there is warranty on it didn’t even stutter one time either
Point is, that wasn’t an issue. Not with that water heater. Why’d he walk in circles for to pass time and make it seem like he’d been diagnosing the problem when he hadn’t? Didn’t even touch the lines or check the bolts just jumped to replacement immediately, smh that’s literally what scammers do. Wasn’t even a licensed plumber ffs

He told us in one of his B.S. meetings whenever the customer ask for the price just tell them "For what i do I'm the cheapest in the valley" still makes me laugh. Some how the video got around and he was gone.
The plumber thought he was going to a 17 year olds house but really he got a surprise
How do you know the plumbing and drain cleaning business when you don’t even have a plumbing license?
“I’m a big fan” 😂😂😂
i hate when people say ,"hot" water heater. it's a water heater...hot water doesn't need heated
What if they mean "hot", as you might describe an attractive woman? There's a lot of strange fetishes out there.
Being a licseened contractor in California. I heard it mentioned that the water heater was three years old. You need to check the original contractor who did not install it with a earthquake strapping kit.
Mike Bavoso this is in arizona
People trying to hookup with underage appliances.
While I like seeing these jerks get caught in the act, the title is misleading. I didn't really learn how to "Spot a Plumbing Scam." All I've learned is to check the nut on the funny looking hose at the top if there's a leak. Beyond that, I'd have to trust a possible con-artist.
get their license number and look it up.get a card ask if they did work around town.
skorpia g that still wasn’t learning anything from the actual video. Lol. Also, you can do all that, but still get screwed over.
I charge $125 for a service call. I would have zero problems tightening it and leaving in 5 min. It would make my day to do that all day lol
Had the same thing here in Melbourne Australia with a plumber trying to sell me a whole new water heater when all that was needed was a new overflow valve.
aaaarhrghrghgrgrgrhghghg
Chris Hansen holds a pair of channel locks like a toddler 😂
First guy looked at the bike like “damn I can trip on that”
LOL at the guy filming with an iPad at 4:48
Chris with those channel locks hahaha… he most definitely had to be coached on how to do that.
Dude was thinking, “why didn’t she offer me any ice tea?”
Yes a water heater can blow up, like a small bomb, it has a tank under pressure, should the pressure check valve fail so will the tank when enough pressure builds.
+Patrick TheBaptist Not enough to tear down the garage.
+homerun443 What does "tearn" mean? Tear? Actually it sure can blow the wall out, I knew a family that had a 60gal blow up in their basement and take out half the bed room above it and part of the roof, all because the safety relief valve was screwed up.
Patrick TheBaptist Pics or it didn't happen
+Patrick TheBaptist Since the system is leaking, the pressure is being released. While possible, hard to believe the pressure relief valve here was not functional, and could easily have been checked to see if it functioned or there was excessive pressure. I definitely wouldn't have told her that her garage could explode, without first having more to go on than seeing water leaking from somewhere I wasn't sure about.
Weltall8000
I wasn't defending the scam or the scammer, just only that it's a fact a water heater can explode like a small bomb and that was it, NOTHING MORE.
"I definitely wouldn't have told her that her garage could explode, without first having more to go on than seeing water leaking from somewhere I wasn't sure about." Me either, and I would have checked the connections first thing anyways, and I'm not even close to a plumber, but I do my own.
Chris Hansen rocks, mowing the grass taking out the scum of the earth.
using adjustable pliers on that nut yup that's a plumber for ya lol!
+Drew Machin any kind of adjustable wrench would work. shouldn't use pliers especially when a technician should have a wrench with them.
+fuck you!!! I would expect that from a DAP
I cringed when I saw that.
Pliers are fine for that, not the #1 tool for that, but they'll work just fine. Some of you guys are uber douche level of pickiness...
Channel lock pliers strip brass nuts like that, that’s why it’s better n cleaner to use wrenches
For every ONE time a Plumber CHEATS a customer, 30 CUSTOMERS CHEAT a Plumber. They usually pick SMALL companies and SELF employed Plumber's
yes, targeting the weak to take advantage. Usually older people who heard a story or attempt a hustle.
Love this! Hopefully but not to sure that it will make honest contractor out of them.
I be happy to look at the leak in her garage.
Chris called it a "Hot water heater"...
The plumber called it a "water heater".
Hot water doesn't need to be heated.
Thank you!!! As a plumber this drives me nuts!!
If its been leaking for a long period of time to spite what caused it the water heater could be damaged the plumbers we're taking precautions. Whould you reather pay for the reassurance that its been replaced or worry about the house flooding?
Adrian (or Jose... who calls himself Joe) is actually a licensed plumber now! Guess what happened to me when he came over? UGH
Chris Hansen has been asking people to go ahead and have a seat over there since 04
I brought a wrench but its wayy watered down, you can even test it
Adrian was honest once a water heater goes bad from corrosion there’s not much hope for it you can tell they really tried to make him look bad took all the procedures right and still tried to call to see if there is warranty on it didn’t even stutter one time either
@@Lostinspacepup how do you know he was walking in circles doing nothing? looks to me like he was on his phone contacting the warranty. This is a spliced video
