After I wrapped up my exhaustive playthrough of BDSP, I instantly replayed through the entirety of Platinum and it felt like I got to wake up from a month-long fever dream and got to heal.
I have to say, I agree that Platinum, and the Sinnoh games in general, are so much better when you experience the games over a longer span of time rather than rushing through them with your only goal being to make it to the credits. It took me about two or three weeks to finish the main story of Pearl (my second Pokémon game after Emerald) and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I just had a great time talking to every character I came across to learn the lore of the region, I liked Contests and Secret Bases (even though back then I couldn't clear the boulders, the Underground was still fun in short bursts), I loved just how huge the region felt with all of its hidden areas that were easy to miss. I loved Seals and customizing my Pokéballs. While you didn't seem to like how arduous some of the routes felt I always appreciated that about them, it felt like a real journey where even the environment was an obstacle to overcome at points. I guess this is a result of how you played but I'm also surprised you never brought up the postgame of Platinum even once, not even a small mention of the Battle Frontier. This is the first video of yours I watched so I don't know if you ever played the Frontier before but trust me, there's a reason people have wanted it to return for over a decade.
Man, imagine waiting for Sinnoh in Gen 8 style and getting chibi Dawn instead. I was antecipating the Gen 4 remakes, I was trying to keep in mind that ORAS had cut content (like the Battle Frontier from those games), but BDSP fells like a bare bones remake. I honestly wasn’t mad, I was sad, sad bc BDSP means that we are probably not getting a remake akin to FRLG, HGSS or ORAS. I was emotionally affected for like 15 minutes, I took a walk and remember that these are just games after all and they are supposed to be fun. About the comments, sorry, they were more supposed to be like me putting my opinion out there on this topic than actually directed at you (the passing comment just the fuse that made me release my frustation about the situation in the world). Anyway, thank you for actually playing Gen 4. I appreciate that you actually took your time to look at the whole Platinum-BDSP situation. But be careful, after all you never know when a Gen 4 fan is going to take a comment personally and flood this section ;)
Faithful remake killed it for me even more than getting chibi instead of Gen 8 style models. After playing ORAS I loved that Mega Evolution became an integral part of the main story and thought all remakes would be like this from now on. At least add a new facility like the Pokéathlon. At least we got Pokémon Legends now.
@@Animemus the chibi is actually not the problem, I just commented on it bc it is actually the first thing we see on the trailer. I was expecting Gen 8 style and then chibi Dawn appeared on my screen, which was so jarring.
Chibi remakes actually isn't a terrible idea, given that gen 8 doesn't look that good either. In the first trailer of bdsp, it actually looked WAY worse than the eventual release. The second trailer improved heavily on the graphics and I actually got really excited for it. Then it came out, and yeah, it was pretty meh. Not as bad as people say it is, but for a Pokemon remake, it was dissapointing. What is good, is a rom hack called "Luminescent Platinum". This brings the Platinum stuff to bdsp, and making it harder. That is actually worth playing.
@@jermainespeid4934 that part made me feel like I had the option of typing in gameshark codes to use Pokemon that no NPC above the ground in Sinnoh has access to or is even documented as part of its fauna lol
exactly, it makes the earlier part of the region more relevant throughout the whole game. In some other games you can just forget a whole city after completing it and it wont matter.
So this is the perspective of people starting from later generations. It's so different yet so interesting seeing what quality of life chnages were made throughout the years that aren't in the previous games making them somewhat more tedious than later expansions. The games were fun, but having some of the modern mechanics would be good
@shewolfcub3 objectiveness doesnt exist in relation to an opinion. As I told you in another comment, just because you grew up with older pokemon games, doesnt they are objectively better. Learn to accept other people's opinions, instead of crying because your childhood series isnt like it was when you started.
@@marinagaleotti Didn't actually grow up with them. I played Gens 1-3 WAY later on after experiencing 4 and 5 and they were insanely good. How about you learn to cope, newgenner? Its so sad that your 3D games aren't that loved, right? I mean, the critic scores speak enough about scatlet/vomit being rated extremely low compared to every other game, how the fandom has extremely divisive opinions on gen 8 and 7 and how msot tierlists rank them low. GameFreak doesnt put effort in anymore; they stopped caring and that's a fact. There's plenty of TH-cam videos explaining as well so I'm clearly definitely not in the minrity on this all.
@@shewolfcub3 I DONT CARE THAT YOU ARENT IN THE MINORITY, GET IT. You repeatedly say that just because you dont have any valid argument, so you just hide in the horde, thinking that being in the minority just proves me wrong. You all are too critical with the new games, way more than you are with the older ones. I hate favoritism.
I don't know if I'd say Giratina and the Distortion World improved Team Galactic, since that comes at the end of the Galactic plot. Rather, I think Galactic just got more time for the named characters to show their personalities and values. Cyrus basically admitting to you in private that he thinks Team Galactic are just a convenient bunch of sheep to manipulate is a really memorable scene for me.
I played plat before pearl (I just got pearl to do rng manip). The scene where team galactic has a big meeting haul is so good I was shocked it wasn’t there. Those small things I think make them being there better at least.
It's a shame you didn't feel enjoy the game too much. But I do think you've hit the nail on the head at the end there. Despite having the game on cartridge, you've decided to play the game on your PC over a few days, using the 2x speed function a lot, and I'm sure you've had content in the back of your mind (it might have even been your motivation to play in the first place). That is one way to experience the game but you must appreciate that's not how the majority of people came to appreciate the games. If you're just looking to speed through any game, you're not going to give yourself time to take it all in. The pacing won't be for everyone, but I think players are supposed to get lost, are supposed to get stuck, are incentivised to explore, and just generally take their time. If you complete the game in a matter of days, you might not experience route 216 at night, you might not have played for that hour of the day where the lighting looks really pretty, you've probably not naturally stumbled across the real time events like Drifloon and Rotom, etc. I think this is where the newest games have fallen short. They're designed to hold your hand, they're more linear, you spend most of the time travelling from point A to B by the click of the button whereas in the past it was always nice to travel by bike. I don't think it's a coincidence that the last well remembered score was gen 5 before the switch to the more modern design philosophy where everything feels faster and more streamlined. I don't think you need nostalgia to enjoy these games, but I do think having this perspective helps. Because playing on an emulator 15 years later with no means to trade, no incentive to play beyond the main story, a smaller availability of Pokemon, no real attachment to what you catch, no reason to go out of your way and play around with the silly things Sinnoh has to offer, isn't going to provide the famous experience that everyone loves. I will be playing ScVi for the first time in the next few weeks and I wouldn't dream of playing it this way, partially because I didn't plan to spend £50 just to shelve it after three days. I guess you could call Platinum the slow burn of the Pokemon franchise. Personally it's the one I return to most often because I find it is easily the most challenging of the pre-3DS games and it's the game I enjoy wasting time in the most.
@@matty8612 summarised my thoughts exactly! Other pokemon games are straight lines ending at the pokemon league but sinnoh just feels like more of a real world and if at any point you skip through the dialogue without reading it you might have no idea where you’re supposed to go to continue your journey. Having the 6th gym near the start of the game but you can’t get there until you have surf, having the ability to chose what order you do Meilene and crasher wake, needing to go back to areas you’ve already passed through to get to new areas these things aren’t nearly as present in newer games and it shows. On top of that by blasting through the game with what appears to be an over levelled starter I think Craig might have missed out on the great additions that platinum makes to give you more options for your team. More fire types, a free Eevee early access to Gible, he most definitely seems to have missed out on the grand underground and didn’t seem to go into the post game at all. Bottom line is we’ve all experienced platinum through hundreds of hours and numerous playthroughs and you can’t expect to understand why we love it blasting through the game on a sped up emulator
As an og sinnoh fan, my disappointment in BDSP comes mostly from the sheer amount of missed potential. The og sinnoh games have a lot of flaws, but most of them are things that could be fixed with simple QOL updates, many of which are standard to the modern games. So I was extremely excited by the idea of modern remakes. The issue was that they decided to remake Diamond/Pearl and not include any of the story content from Platinum in any form. The changes to the underground were the only significant difference. Before BDSP was announced, I was expecting them to follow the pattern that previous remakes had done: recreate the older region and story with updated hardware and the graphical style of the current generation, while mixing in story content from the 3rd/definitive version in some way, and expanding the post game a bit. FRLG, HGSS, and ORAS all did these things. Essentially, I was expecting to see sinnoh in the same graphical style as SWSH, and to have certain areas re-imagined to be more 3-dimensional. Maybe make the great marsh and the snow route into wild areas, stuff like that. I wanted to see the spear pillar story events done with the same sort of cinematic flare as the Eternatus arc in SWSH. It would have been so epic. The bobble-head model of BDSP's characters reaaallllly dont do it for me. They just look so dumb and I can't take any of the cutscenes seriously. I wish the big story moments had been made more cinematic with full body models, since those assets were made to be seen during battles anyway. So basically, I got my own hopes up because of pattern recognition, and the product we got was just immensely underwhelming. Thankfully, Legends Arceus was able to deliver on *some* of those desires, and I really loved that game, but I think I'll always mourn what could have been.
I don’t see BDSP as a remake, but just a remaster. Nothing about them were remade from the originals and nothing from Platinum was incorporated into BDSP. Instead, the games got a remastered edition that made the games more streamlined and updated typings while also doing little in terms of improvements to the original. Nothing was added like the original remakes, nothing was updated to the current gen, no added gimmicks or redesigns were made. It was just a one to one remaster of the originals. This is why Platinum is the go to experience of the Gen 4 Sinnoh games, as you get the full experience, you play the finished story with refined aspects to the game. Platinum is most definitive version of the games and it's sad to see that we will never get a true Gen 4 remake.
Eh, I take issue with calling BDSP just a remaster, not because it wasn't not underhwhelming but because it also made several things about the game worse. like gutting Secret Bases and Contests and and a botched attempt at adding following Pokémon. Gym Leader teams and the Elite Four were made stronger through held items and EVs but at the same time the now forced EXP Share and Friendship boosts mean you don't even realize the changes until the Elite Four.
This take is so stupid because not only is it purely fueled by feelings of spite of BDSP not feeling up to par with other remakes, it has to flat out lie and be disingenuous to be correct. While obviously it doesn't remake things as heavily as past remakes, it's still clearly a remake. The Grand Underground is something that was added that was not in either of the base games or Platinum. Pokemon following you was added, as well as the new contest system and character outfits. Hell, you say they didn't update it for modern gens, but they added the Fairy type, along with Fairy-type moves and new TMs. The Battle Tower was also changed to allow fights against various Gym Leaders, Elite 4 Members, and even Team Galactic. Not to mention Ramanas Park was added, giving access to past legendaries and a superboss Giratina fight. It's fine if you don't like BDSP, but just say that instead of coping that it's "not a remake" it's just embarrassing and untrue.
@thekirbyguy4576 Sorry I embarrassed you, but it's just my take. I get that some things were added to the game to modernize the originals to match current day game mechanics and they added a few gimmicks here and there that weren't in the original, but it just doesn't feel like enough to be considered a full remake nor is it even to the same gen standards like how other remakes have been. It's why in my opinion, I consider it more a remastered version. It's not just spite, but also disappointment, dissatisfaction, and sense of missed opportunity. BDSP is just not as definitive of a Sinnoh game as Platinum in my opinion. If you want a breakdown, here are things added to Platinum that were not added to BDSP: -Battle Frontier -Resort Chateau -Charon -Addition Story Elements, including more inclusion of Cynthia -Distortion World Sure, Ramanas Park was added in and Pokémon follow you (poorly implemented to begin with), and the Grand Underground removed Secret Bases and Traps to add extra rooms to catch Pokémon in, but it just feels like the bare minimum effort of adding extra content that doesn't even add much to the overall experience of Sinnoh. Other Remakes incorporated elements of their third version into them, I don’t see why BDSP did not. Again, it just feels like an updated version of the original two games, with very little added. The biggest reason why I call it a remaster is because the base game is mostly the same, same code, same glitches, and even the same 493 Pokémon. A update with Ramanas Park and chili models included. I understand that the games are Remakes, but it just "feels" more like a remaster, hence why I see it as such. My opinion is a valid one, not a stupid one. Also, the new "contests" were a joke.
Love Gen 4 so much. Really brought my Pokemon knowledge to a head. Learned about EV training and that was where I spent the most time honing that craft. I believe I was a freshman or sophomore in high school. My Pokémon Pearl is my grail. With that being said, I’ve said it multiple times - I don’t care how many people hate on BDSP - if and when I get a Switch, I know in my heart and soul I will LOVE BDSP. Gen 4 is my favorite, and that’s comin from an older dude who played Gen 1 originally.
If you love gen 4 and the original Diamond & Pearl games, you will enjoy and have a good time with BDSP. It's being hated too much. And though I agree with people's arguments, I also think they had the wrong expectations. It's just the same game on a new platform. While people were expecting actual new content. Which is also fair. Doesn't make the games bad though.
I really enjoyed bdsp and welcomed the improvements (surfing is so much faster now and fairy types are so nice to have, among a lot of other smaller things)
I also highly recommend anyone looking to return to platinum who played it as a kid should look into rom hacks. There are plenty of modernised versions of platinum, renegade platinum being probably the most popular due to it also adding difficulty and balance changes, but the quality of life some modders have added into the game from minimising the tutorial to prompting to use another repel just make the experience so much better from a modern perspective, while still giving the flavour of the original that draws people in
Going back and forth, feeling confused about which town I should head to, the messy map/routes are what make Sinnoh unique and less monotonous, hence my favourite region < 3
10:53 Hi! Hello! Die-hard Gen 4 fan here! (sorry AGAIN for the long comment, I talk way too much) Hearing a retrospective from someone who played BDSP first, then Platinum, was certainly something I've never heard before, so thank you for sharing what is a pretty unique perspective in the fandom. I agree that Gen 2 and 4 share a lot of similarities, where the regions are built for exploration rather than a streamlined story-telling experience. Johto has very rare Pokémon hidden in corners of the region, and routes that you can tackle however you choose, and Sinnoh has expansive routes that push you to explore them from multiple angles with new HMs and the bike by making you backtrack. These games are *designed* to be taken slowly, you are supposed to explore, and that's a lot easier to do with a child's patience than it is as an adult, and why people who played them as kids have a stronger attachment, because they put those hours in. The leap from Diamond and Pearl to Platinum really can't be understated. The infamous "two Fire Type families" becoming much better off in Platinum (the entire dex does), the story changes with Giratina, Cynthia, Cyrus, and Looker, the fact you can actually get the new Gen 4 evolutions that were previously locked to post-game, giving Fantina an actual Gym, and Team Galactic's revamp in both general vibe (the Eterna Building comes to mind) and their teams. Platinum fixed many of the most egregious issues that Diamond and Pearl faced, and while BDSP fixed some things from Gen 4 via streamlining, like the speed, it failed to capture what actually made Gen 4 beloved - the Platinum additions. No Looker, a Cynthia stripped of much of her coolness, shoving the new evolutions and Fire Types underground instead of putting them on the routes, a finish to the evil team plot that absolutely pales in comparison to the tension of the Distortion World, and simply... getting lost in Sinnoh and finding your way after a long trek. Even the artstyle, while way more subjective, is much less popular in BDSP; personally it makes everything look like it's made of plasticine, it totally removes the life from the game. The hatred for BDSP comes from ILCA failing to understand or capture why people loved Sinnoh, from the clear rush-job that BDSP was, and for simply not expanding. FRLG adds the Sevii Islands and two new Types. HGSS adds Gen 3 and 4 mechanics, polishes Johto, and adds essentially all Crystal content. ORAS, while lacking much of Emerald's content, makes up for it with new Megas, the Delta Episode, and an artstyle that remains faithful but has character. BDSP is effectively Diamond and Pearl with a plastic chibi coat of paint filled with glitches and broken music that required a Day 1 patch. Also, BDSP has the built-in team-wide EXP Share, which is (mostly) fine in SwSh and ScVi because those games are built with it in mind, but Diamond and Pearl wasn't, and BDSP makes zero changes, so you end up ludicrously overlevelled. Platinum definitely isn't without issues, I totally agree Fantina should have given us Fly and Maylene Defog, the speed is painful at times, it can get a touch grindy at the very end, and the Distortion World happening before Volkner was certainly... a choice. But this is why BDSP frustrates so many people, because had we gotten remakes - actual REMAKES - with Platinum content, while fixing the issues, it could have been incredible. Instead, we got a plastic, rushed remaster with minimal additions and no content from the objectively superior version, and were told to be grateful. I'm glad you played Platinum to at least experience the definitive version, and sorry if you felt in any way pressured to do so (Gen 4 and 5 fans can be... intense lmao). Again, love these retrospectives. If you're looking for suggestions, I'd love your thoughts on Gen 7's shake up of the formula, or a GSC vs HGSS retrospective. If you're looking for games you've never touched, Mystery Dungeon is a fan favourite - Explorers of Sky is the most popular, but if you want something more modern, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX is a brilliant Switch remake of the original PMD games.
Blame the Pokemon company itself for the lack of Platinum content in BDSP, because I have heard that the people at ILCA wanted to put that content be in those remakes but the pokemon company unfairly restricted them from doing that.
So far most of the things in platinum people cared about is mostly loved by a small audience, most who played it don't remember the stuff they mentioned or even support it. I love platinum but it's not a game I recommend to people since it requires you play for a absurdly long time in order for you to love it and you could use that time to play another game. What the modern pokemon games are trying to do is to make a memorable short experience without making the game drag on for to long. This is the type of approach that many other modern games including indie games tried to do having a short memorable experience than a long game that has many unmemorable moments even though the memorable moments are good.
I also could never get my bearings in Sinnoh, but that’s also something I kind of liked because it felt like there was more to explore. A fond memory I have is when I played Diamond again about 5 years after I had beaten it and seeing a cave that seemed out of place. That place ended up being Turnback cave, and walking into the room being greeted by a giant Giratina sprite gave me a hell of a good jumpscare.
It’s kinda weird that you’re complaining about a Pokemon game being too big and a region not being linear enough. From the start of the game to the point you get fly at the 3rd gym it’s basically a straight shot
He also uses Hoenn as an example of a design that avoids this when uh... no, the entire western 1/2 is 1 giant back and forth loop. This is because Pokemon regions generally have Metroidvania map design.
Paldea region is big but I never got lost. In Sinnoh, I am lost like a lot of times. And the reason behind that is because the exploration part is only partial. If the point of the game is exploration, I should be able to go to another town without riding a bike to ride through the slope. But instead the game is telling me where to go to the point there is even no point to backtrack it. Hell, even if we get the bikes, the game is telling us to go through the cycling road rather than allowing us to backtrack. So that is where the feeling of lost started. The game points us to a direction and not allowing us to backtrack and just completely give up on backtracking and just let the game tell us what to do.
Platinum fixed the Issue of "fire types". Diamond and pearl only had Chimchar and Ponyta until the post game. Platinum added Flareon (courtesy of Eevee), Houndoom and Magmar, before you reached victory road. Which still, isn't a lot of diversity but it's better than before. BDSP tried to replicate this by putting platinum Pokemon in the underground, which sort of worked. My mate found a wild Houndoom, right after getting his 3rd badge, and kept it in his party the whole journey. (He was a Piplup player).
@@DKQuagmire let’s not forget that Flint the FIRE type elite four member only had 2 fire types in his DP team the first time you battle him this wasn’t fixed in BDSP he still has Lopunny, Steelix and Drifblim all of which aren’t fire type. The same situation occurred with Volkner who only had 2 electric types on his DP team the other 2 being Ambipom and Octillery. Platinum adding more fire and electric types earlier in the game was needed and the fact that BDSP copied teams from DO shows how bad it was
The BDSP-Platinum situation is really another instance of people pointing out the flaws of some of the newer games by comparing them to an idealised version of their childhood classics. I'd probably prefer Platinum for the distoriton world alone though, but BDSP is at least an upgrade over the original Diamond and Pearl.
I think the issue is that the original D/P wasn't the bar that needed to be cleared by a remake, partly because Platinum existed as a template for very basic QoL improvements (like a back button on the Poketch) but also because D/P were maybe the worst mainline Pokémon games ever released so that bar was really low already.
No.. The sprites really don't translate well in 3D in that way. Beyond that, contests and the underground were gutted. The additional enemy trainer tweaks and return of the buddy following system were very welcome. However, the always on exp share and removal of moves were not. The only real faithfulness in BDSP was keeping issues in DP that were resolved in Platinum. It's not a bad game tbh. It's just another disappointment of the Switch generation of Pokémon games. May the odds ever be in the favor of gen 5 fans because that's the next bombshell to land.
@@tyronetiggums6441 Not having a back button on the Poketech is the WORST. I mean, everything on one screen sort of makes some apps like the dowsing machine harder, but than you ADD in the fact that you can accidently switch apps but not use them on the Poketch, and that makes the backbutton something that would have been ESSENTIAL for the pokeetch.
Yeah, though I do prefer the "third" game whenever I've purchased the third release in either a Pokemon main or side series. They typically introduce a lot of minor quality of life improvements and a bunch of post-game content. Starting with the third game in the series means you don't have to replay the entire game from scratch just to enjoy the differences. As long as the bulk of the content from the "third" game makes it into whatever remakes get done that'd go a long way to please fans of that generation. The third game in a series is still the same game as the originals, so it would make sense to include any improvements from it into the remake.
@@emberguard5009 Agreed. A great example of what BDSP could have been was HGSS. They took the best parts of GS and Crystal, then added some new fun features and QOL.
There are 3 things that I think are better in Platinum compared to DP/BDSP: 1. The story is more fleshed out in Platinum. 2. The post game with the Battle Frontier in Platinum. 3. The available Pokémon during the main story is much more expansive in Platinum. BDSP's Underground did fix this problem a bit but the problem with BDSP is that a lot of the new evolutions to old Pokémon which was the main exciting thing from the new Pokémon introduced in Sinnoh aren't available until the post game (either the Pokémon not being available or evolution items being unobtainable). The expanded Sinnoh dex in Platinum also helped make NPC teams more varied and also some Gym Leader and Elite 4 members have better teams (especially Candice, Volkner and Flint having all Pokémon of their type specialty in Platinum). Platinum fixed these issues that DP had (and later BDSP would have) making replaying Sinnoh in Platinum much more enjoyable in my opinion.
i played platinum as a kid and it was my favorite pokemon game for the longest time. bdsp took platinum's place as my favorite pokemon game now because i prefer the faster gameplay, the removal of hms, and being able to play on a tv without 2 screens or a touch screen
I’m a die hard Sinnoh fan. It’s what I grew up playing and it will always be my favourite! No other Pokemon game does it for me like platinum. Edit: I’d like to add. My favourite music in all of Pokemon is from Sinnoh. The music alone sets it apart from other games for me.
I think people were most disappointed to BDSP for what the left out from Platinum. Like, imagine the Distortion World cutscenes but in full 3d fashion. Gonna be very sick, too bad it's only in our imagination.
Massive gen 4 fan here it's my favourite region/generation and nostalgia is a big part of that as it represents the end of part of my life and the beginning of a new part, honestly I never understood the hate boners for bdsp is platinum better? Yeah sure, would it have been better if they had added more stuff like oras? Most likely, does the idea of a sinnoh game made in the style of sword and shield sound better? As a fan of sword and shield I choose to answer with the wise words of will smith "ahh hell no" , like I say im one of those rare people that didn't choose to wait till Scarlett and violet came out to say i liked sword and shield but the fact of the matter is that doesn't mean it needs to be the basis for everything, i like different games having different styles and to be frank if Pokémon were going to have one art style to stick with for the switch games then i say the let's go ones, only the art style though i want my wild battles and no fricking motion control capturing mechancs please, those games looked far better than sword and shield, plus I think most of us can agree the kaiju battles were just a bit meh
I am definitely biased towards gen 4 because diamond was my first ever game. I ended up playing platinum much later than diamond, and maybe that's the reason I enjoyed it so much. The fact that you have so many possibilities to build your team in platinum is what makes it so great for me. In Diamond but also in Johto, even in hgss you are really limited in your choice of Pokemon, because most cool ones evolve really late, are version exclusives or aren't obtainable until post game. Platinum added so many great evolutions like scissor, electivire, magmortar or gliscor. Also, the post game is still the best of any Pokemon game to this day, really only rivaled by black and white 2s post game. The battle frontier is just goated.
I will agree that the map layout is confusing, places connect to others in unexpected and surprising ways and the huge number dead ends and obstacles could make you feel as though you aren't getting anywhere. The map is dominated by Mt. Coronet, a massive cave system across multiple levels that divides the Gym Leader challenge and main story into 3. Whilst the backtracking and HM combinations were a tad frustrating, they added to the overall experience because when you did remember to go back and explore, it was incredibly rewarding. It enabled you to approach the same routes from different angles and perspectives. It allowed you to see the same place in a new light. That's deeply impressive given the limitations of the game engine. You felt like you were on your journey. Yes the plot interfered and required you to save the world, but besides that, you could experience the game with much more freedom than other Pokemon games. You didn't feel railroaded nearly as much. NPCs told you to go X and do Y, but because there were options to do something else, you felt like you could play at your own pace. It encouraged breaking up the game into smaller segments. It let you savour the experience more. If you hadn't explored a lot whilst doing the main story, then you had a lot of post-game content to uncover, whether it was finding Rotom in the spooky house, or Stark Mountain or using Rock Climb on a particular route to see what was on that ledge. The region felt bigger than it was precisely because those details existed. Johto is a region with a very similar philosophy, there's a lot of nooks and hidey holes to explore, its therefore a tad surprising you loved Johto so much and wasn't as much of a fan as Sinnoh. I think there was a reason they chose to make Sinnoh and Johto part of the same generation. Games more recently have have always felt much more final. "YOU HAVE FINISHED THE GAME, THANKS FOR PLAYING." But with Platinum, you always felt like you were never quite finished. That there was always something more to explore or to do.
As someone who played DPPt very early on and still counts it as one of her favorites, this video was a pretty interesting watch-there's problems I'm more used to, but I won't deny they're there. With that being said, the big thing I have to disagree on is the region's design being "confusing." Pokemon in earlier gens had a metroidvania-like region design-not nearly to the extent of those games' complexity, but the idea is similar. Parts of the region loop back on themselves, the way to the next objective isn't always in front of you, and items (hms and the bike) are needed to progress in some areas. I actually quite dislike how pokemon's regions have gotten linear (...at least until S/V had the opposite problem), it's cool to have a lategame objective be right around the starting area. With that being said, the path you need to take is actually pretty linear up until around the point you get fly, which minimizes backtracking by itself. The only instance of you needing to turn back around to progress before then is going back to Jubilife after the first badge. I notice you cited Hoenn as a region that doesn't share this problem, when Hoenn actually has the same looping backtracking kind of region design...down to the abundance of HMs. Because yeah, Sinnoh has aged. HMs taking up so many move slots is ridiculous, the region isn't as diverse as something like Hoenn or Kalos (though this is a problem somewhat alleviated by the postgame island, which got a huge glow-up from DP to Plat), and the only thing that Platinum really improved about the speed is surfing (look at videos of surfing in DP, it's horrendous). The DS games got more optimized with every release, it's night and day between DP and BW in terms of how fast the game runs. Now, I WAS that kid that curled up to play my DS under the covers-that had fun digging into every side area and experience the game had to offer, even if i never got that far into them. That got excited that Rotom and like two dozen other pokemon weren't exclusive to the postgame, and that was immersed by the disorienting distortion world. Platinum IS my childhood. I am biased! But I'm glad you came away seeing at least some of what we're talking about.
A just startet playing Luminescent Platinum on a switch emulator. Its a mod for BD. I know, the installation can be tedious but when you get it work, its just a blessing. So if you have the time and motivation. Try it, you wont regret it :D
You cannot truly have "experienced the 4th generation" until you played all the big Gen 4 games, including: - Platinum - Heartgold or Soulsilver - Ranger 1 (is Gen 3, but it kinda counts) - Ranger 2 - Ranger 3 - and most importantly: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - also Pokémon Battle Revolution is a nice bonus, but it's not like it's _completely_ essential Once you played all of them, only then have you had the full "Gen 4 experience"! =P And you should only play Ranger on a device that has a touchpen, so a DS, 3DS or WiiU. With a PC mouse you won't get too far! =D
Also, without wanting to sound rude, please use nearest-neighbour scaling when recording footage. This uneven upscaling you're doing here just looks terrible to the eye compared to having evenly-spaced pixels, not helped by all the noise introduced by no$GBA (which you shouldn't use for DS emulation nowadays, since it's very outdated).
Thanks for pointing this out! I'm a total noob when it comes to emulation so I'd never looked into the different scaling options. Just had a go with nearest-neighbour and I can definiely see the difference (especially with the noise issue you mentioned) :)
The funniest thing about Defog was that it was an AWFUL move because of its accuracy, then they made it broken in competitive by having it clear EVERYTHING on the opponent’s side(Reflect, Light Screen, entry hazards in your side, on top of lowering their accuracy) and now the only mon that can learn it is Braviary line. I love it XD
Slight correction, it lowers evasion, not accuracy. Also, just in terms of learnset there are mons like the mandibuzz line(my beloved), g-weezing, and the swanna line. TMs and Egg Moves further boost learners
I never played crystal, but if I did, and then went to play Heart gold, only to find half of the content I remember not being there to be missing, both from the story and the QoL, with nothing to replace them, I'd be disappointed, in bdsp, we lost the battle frontier, building our mansion in the post game, we lost Looker, and no doubt more that I cant think of, its the laziness of it all, and the sheer cash grab that it was that gets us upset us, or at least me, most I think. We bought Diamond and or Pearl, then Platinum, which is 2 or 3 purchases initially, and then they offer us a half backed recessive version, split in 2, not even a single definitive. I really hate the dual release system pokemon has and they need to be called out on that more as well
Platinum might be my favourite pokémon game. I do think i've recently started to understand some of its downsides, but it's still my favourite. Only matched by BW2 To me i can never look at the original Diamond & Pearl the same again. With my experience with game development, those just scream rushed and unfinished. Just look at route 228 Still, what might be the main reason i love Sinnoh is because of the atmosphere. The whole region just has such a unique feel to it. One surrounded by mysteries, spirits and mountains. Its special to me also because it reminds me of where i'm from. It is a vibe that i really do want to recreate in my own games for others to experience. Also the music is still my favourite game soundtrack of all time. It really is a game to be played at a slow pace. And i kinda think some of the core mechanics like the random cave encounter works contrary too. Even the healthbars i do still see the appeal off, especially as i was younger and didn't have a good grasp of damage calcs in my own head. It built up suspense about if my attack was enough. It is to me an experience, that amounts to more than the sum of its parts. Something more atmospheric. About beeing immersed in a new world that doesn't neccecarily bend to the needs and desires of a gameplay experience. And in a sense some of the only games that have been able to recreate some of the atmosphere that i find in Platinum are games like Hollow Knight and The Witcher 3 (especially). It is for those reasons that BDSP essentially disguists me. It feel like a complete rejection of everything that Sinnoh represents to me. Its colour palette feels souless, the artstyle poorly thought out and the atmosphere was thrown out of a window like a baseball. To me it feels like a sick parody of the original, so even though you could probably enjoy it on its own merits. I can't stand it
I think you hit the nail on the head. Gen 4 especially the originals were almost purposely obtuse in my opinion. I’d often get stuck when I was kid with no idea what I was supposed to do cause OG Diamond and Pearl wasn’t always clear about that. It gave hints that if you aren’t a kid you can probably figure out but it wanted people to get lost and explore the game making everyone’s experiences with it just that much more unique and was back in the era of Pokemon that wanted you to spend months trading rumors and tips on the playground. I think even moving into the much more streamlined platinum version that’s just the appeal of generation 4.
Pokemon Platinum is the superior version, you forgot to mention the battle frontier. It is only available in Emerald and Platinum, the best post-game in my opinion.
I feel like both games are both interesting in our own way also I really really like the expense of this of it it just makes all other Roots just feel that much more special when you’re filled with stuff but I feel that you should play both games as it gives a similar experience to black and black 2 When noticing the differences
I gotta say, i see where you are coming from getting turned around and backtracking, but to me thats actually what i like about sinnoh. In a real country there would be crossroads, and to get to other places you might need to backtrack or revisit old towns. Its actually one thing i dont like about newer games. Sword and shield, felt so linear it was unnatural, and i couldnt get immersed at all, and i love alola but the routes felt like big loops around the island to me most of the time
The game that made me the Pokemon fan that I am. I recently went back to these games as a review series I'm making for Pokemon, and just like it was 14 years ago, I had a blast. This game holds so many memories for me as a kid and the reason I enjoy Pokemon so much even today despite its flaws. Sinnoh was a grand time, and definitely a recommended region to explore. Just avoid BDSP like the plague...
The problem with using fast forward, is that if you have used it for Generation 3, which is 60fps and very fast (it used no 3d, and possibly because it had much better coding), Platinum will still feel slower.
Pokemon Diamond and Platinum were the games I played under my sheets late at night, I remember my step sister had a Turtwig stuffed animal and I stole it because it was my first ever Pokemon I used to get to Floaroma town weeks into my playthrough now I arrive there in the first sitting of it Pokemon has lost its magic in that sense and has gained other magic but it’s lost some simplistic magic and I miss that I miss playing Pokemon at recess even when I had no friends I miss when I would make my own Pokemon games on the back of my school papers and I miss Pokemon I still play it everyday but it’s different it’s not worse it’s not better it’s just different but maybe that’s just growing up
Let me start by saying I’m not the Gen 4 Stan I used to be. My first Pokemon game was in 1999 with Red version and I’ve played every game since and my favorite region is the Hoenn region. However, Platinum is a top 3 or 4 game with me. Along with games such as Emerald, BW2, and HGSS. I’ll say this, as I just finished my replay of Platinum and a living Dex in the game weeks ago: nostalgia is not the only reason this game is well remembered. It is for sure leagues above any other Sinnoh game. The plot points are much better. Cynthia and Cyrus are more flushed out. The gym leaders have been much improved upon. And there is a healthy heap of post game activities. Most importantly Pokémon were made more available. A better regional Dex that also included all the newly introduced pokemon greatly adds to the replay-ability of Platinum.
Platium by far has always had a place in my heart alongside Heart Gold. Both I acquired close to the same time and enojyed playing! Now, like 15 years later, im replaying them and enjoying them like i did. Although the pacing in platinum is slower, then i remember 😢😢😂😂
I do prefer Platinum over BDSP because of the story and the addition of more fire types but, for BDSP I did enjoy the removal of the HM Slave Pokémon that I had to swap in and out of my team. Then the Gym Leaders and Elite 4 got huge team updates after you beat the game, the addition of Ramanas Park and the underground.
My first ever Pokémon game was Pokémon diamond so there is definitely going to be some biased. But I think BDSP I’m not that bad in terms of the game itself. I see platinum as something that improves the gameplay but it’s not like the game is terrible without the new features and story. For me, I actually like the Chibi style with only showing the whole 3-D model when entering battles so I didn’t think that was a problem at all. I also feel like the difficulty on the E4 and the gym leader rematches are something that Pokémon fans have been asking for for quite a long time and in my own opinion, I think they delivered on that part. Overall, I personally loved. BDSP but I can still understand that it is mainly due to nostalgia factors. To me, I like BDSP and platinum equally for different reasons. One thing for sure, most of the remastered themes and soundtracks on BDSP are definitely a step up from platinum outside of a few exceptions. A few examples are the surf theme, Floroma town and Canalave city. I love Pokémon soundtracks so this is definitely a treat for me.
I just wanted to say, not about the video, but about the comments. Pokemon players seem to be very well versed as well as above average intelligence. I love to see it. To do well in these games, takes strategy, and intelligence. I really like the pokemon community. Im playing Emerald on the VBA. And im hyper obsessing sbout pokemon lately. Anyways, im done. Bye 😅
I was a Crystal kid, Gen 2 was my formative Gen, so I have no Gen 4 bias at all So with that said, I'll die on the hill that THE ONLY reason there is to like BDSP is if you've never played Platinum (same with ORAS and Emerald) And still maintain that HGSS straight up replace GS AND Crystal, despite my bias towards 8bit music and pixel graphics
Im gonna get alot of hate but i actually think bdsp is better to play then platinum and the go to game if i want to play sinnioh. Now before any comments, i think bdsp are bad reamkes compared to past ones. We were expecting sinnioh with some pokemon up to gen 8 , gen 8 graphics and gimmicks but we kinda just got a self contained game with a shit art style and i admit missing some of the platinum changes did suck. I feel then gen 8 mechanics and quality of life improvements imo to me outshine the story changes of platinum. Platinum still ran super slow and when people compare platinum to bdsp it usually comes down to improved story, expanded pokedex and gym leaders now having actual teams to suite their type and a slightly better post game with the battle frontier and thats it. The story changes are only big if you actually value it, the expanded pokedex was slightly fixed with the grand underground but the npc teams still sucked i admit, we did lose the battle frontier but we got better gym leader rematches and the park, the post game is also better way better for competive battling with the gen 8 breeding mechanics, pokemon home tranfer added hidden abilities making building ev trained teams extremely easily compared to og gen 4 where if you dont hack good luck making a legit team. I say this as for most players competive battling and breeding is the post game while the resy drop a game once the champion is defeated. I think the battling of bdsp is extremely underrated, getting to with gen 1-4 pokemon with improvements like fairy types, better move pools and hidden abilities while also not having the power creep bs of later gens. One other thing people hate on is the exp share which i think gets over hated and i have an argument to counter the hate, i dont think grinding equals difficulty, og gen 4 is only difficult because of how high level the later npc trainers can get but i always found this can easily be countered with tons of shitty grinding or worst, dumping all your xp into a single mon. Again i do want to say i still think bdsp is a bad remake and not what us fans wanted but imo if you like playing sinnioh i honestly think this is better then playing platinum. Edit: i forgot bdsp but the darkrai, shamin, arceus events in game.
You mentioned getting to play Platinum on an emulator, correct? What emulators do you use or recommend? I've been wanting to replay Black/White, but would rather not spend $100+ for a used copy (even though I love the game). Awesome content btw!!
I think the conclusion of the video does hit the nail on the head. Taking a step back and looking at BDSP, it isn't a bad Sinnoh game, it just offered absolutely nothing new to people who had played Gen 4 growing up. Platinum is the complete experience (sometimes held back by the era it was made in) whilst BDSP is Sinnoh lite with the all the modern mechanics to help speed through the experience.
I honestly always forget the controls when in the Distortion World. Also, it's easy to get lost. Platinum is definitely better than Diamond & Pearl, but, I think BDSP have merits over Diamond & Pearl. 1. Brilliant Diamond/ Shining Pearl have Platinum's Surfing Speed instead of the Snail's Pace of Diamond & Pearl. Trust me, I forgot how SLOW the Surfing Speed was when I played Diamond in May 2021; compared to when I played Platinum in 2023. 2. BDSP have a better roster of Fire Types & Ice Types if you check the Grand Underground Pre National Dex. Absol, Houndoom, Smoochum, Magby/ Elekid, Gligar/ Teddiursa, Togepi, Duskull, Snorunt, Swablu & Swinub are good examples. Meaning, if you play Shining Pearl, you have 4 Fire Types to choose from & 6 Fully Evolved Ice Types. (Jynx, Mamoswine, Froslass, Glalie, Weavile & Abomasnow) 3. BDSP have Gym Leader & League Rematches, with BDSP getting a second set of League rematches that Platinum didn't have. Platinum had the main battles with the League & then harder rematches after finishing Stark Mountain; but, BDSP have three sets of battles: Initial/ Main Story, Pre Stark Mountain (Platinum Teams) & Post Stark Mountain (Full Teams of 6 and Roserade is exchanged for a Porygon Z). Plus, the League is harder in BDSP than it is Platinum if you're playing casually. (Yet, I still had a rough time against Flint) 4. All Gym Leaders have full teams of 6 for rematches, unlike in Platinum where they had teams of 5. 5. Origin Giratina, Sky Shaymin & Rotom Forms are in BDSP. 6. This next one is plus over even Platinum: If you have saved data for Legends Arceus on a Switch with BDSP on it, you get an Azure Flute in BDSP. Player's bedroom. 7. HMs are easier to use, except Defog, which should've had a prompt to use it. 8. Here are two points BDSP get over ORAS: Classic DS Sounds (Which are bad) & Character Customization (While restrictive, isn't bad) 9. 3D Models look pretty good. Also, Mars' AI kinda... beat itself. Golbat & Purugly kept U-turning against my Torterra, while Stealth Rock was set up. That's definitely ONE way to beat a boss. Do it the funny way. Seriously, whenever I tried attacking one, it U-turned, the other one was hurt by Stealth Rocks and then my attack. Rinse & Repeat till Bronzor came out. It was weird, but, I wasn't about to say no to funky AI decisions.
Platinum looks and feels best on the DS. Did you play on an emulator? Theres lots of screen errors in the footage Edit: watched far enough now to know you did lol. I think the emulator takes away a bit from the game, but that could just be my experience.
It's so weird you just don't mention any of the big changes from BDSP over to Platinum, especially post game ngl. But even on the main game it's not just the order but the complete overhall of enemy trainers, wild encounters and the dex that manages to be better than BDSP even with the underground encounters.
I think what you gotta remember is that, BDSP improved in the mechanics department, but really downgraded in the story department. There’s a difference between the two in that, what Platinum added was more of a story, while BDSP added more to what Diamond and Pearl had, with ‘enhanced’ graphics. Imo, there’s nothing that really changed unless you mod your copy of BDSP, but in reality, there’s not really any difference between DP and BDSP realistically other than visual updates. As someone whose first game was platinum, I can and will say, beating the game with every single story competitive starter team, to be 100% honest, I think Platinum is the best way to play throughout sinnoh, even to this day after 15-16 years, I do believe platinum is the best way to enjoy sinnoh. Idk if there’s ways to update the game, and fix some of the issues to make the game itself more enjoyable (Not adding in the modern Pokemon, or adding in more modern mechanics, just patching up the game alone because the game now in days has kind of aged like cheese like most of the games.), I think Platinum, despite it’s differences to Diamond and Pearl, best way to enjoy sinnoh is to play all three original sinnoh games, but just playing platinum mainly is the best way to enjoy your sinnoh experience.
The only bad thing about these games is HMs. Also, how are you going to talk about the entire game EXCEPT for the battle frontier? I.e. THE WHOLE SELLING POINT OF PLATINUM??
The slowness is the worst in Gen 4 because not even the Gameboy games of Gen 1/2/3 ran that slow. I think they rushed the game and whatever engine they used, because while they fixed it some in Platinum and HGSS, you could still tell that these were more so bandages to a wound than a full on fix.
BDSP in my eyes are great games, the new features are amazing and i don't mind the exp.share just because i'm not a powerful pokemon trainer but i prefer BDSP. i'm a sucker for fast games because i'm a busy man. i'm not saying all this so i can be unique! this is just my honest opinion.
Nice to see other people also appreciating the Sinnoh remakes for what they are. I feel many Sinnoh fans are so blinded by nostalgia that they just refuse to see even the slightest of redeeming qualities in them.
@@wikiuser92 It doesn't take nostalgia blindness to see BDSP are a massive step down from every previous remake. Sinnoh fans were robbed of a real remake.
Bdsp is by far my favourite switch game for a playthrough and it's mostly because of the no nonsense fun you'll have just going through the game on a different team each time i go back. When i play platinum i stay with the same things that i know work because there's no way I'm spending all that time levelling up something that can't carry me through the major fights. Yeah, sure, platinum has more variety, but the modern xp system gives a great experience. And even then, the underground added a lot, and you can even give yourself the national dex at the start to get even crazier options
I think a lot of the people that really praise platinum think about only the changes from DP as if that’s the only part of the game that counts. Platinum certainly has lots of strong upgrades, but at its core, gen 4 struggles in its own way a lot. It’s filled with lots of long routes compared to the first 3 gens. It’s slow both in the battles and just moving from point A to point B. And it has a lot of frustrating moments like needing 5 hms to explore an entire route or sinking in the snow/marsh. It tries to really give you that vast feel, but it just takes much longer to complete and progress seems a lot less meaningful. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good game. But for me platinum has gone from one of the best in the series to just a solid but kinda average game
I personally grew up with Platinum, and for a long time, I considered it one of the top 3 Pokémon games of all time. Though, after replaying it 2 or 3 years ago for a challenge run, I really began to notice the cracks start to form. Now it's kind of in the middle for me. It's still a great game but not nesrly as fun for me as Red & Blue or Sun & Moon
AOKcraig i was about to unsubscribe and delete your video from my history, yes i am an gen4 die hard and yess they are my favorite games bij a mile away and to be honest i feel like most players are 3/4/5 lovers, but am getting of track here, yes i maybe blinded by nostalgia but i can honestly say that gen 4 is the biggest reason why i still love pokemon as an adult because of 1 important thing …. World building i love the creation trio and arceus i love darkrai, creselia, regigigas and even heatran even if he is depicted as weak in the anime but i am absolutely happy to see that you understand why platinum is so much better than bdsp even tho they can be a fun experience for sure but if they still included platinum features they games would’ve been so much better even as chibbies, that’s the reason why we are mad at bdsp they should’ve build of platinum !!! … but still i feel like legends arceus kinda made up for not having the proper remix like oras was but they’ve could’ve been much better!
As someone who played both Diamond & Platinum when they came out, I still prefer Gens. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, & 7 over them. Sinnoh is big, which should make me want to explore, but it's full of impediments to make it feel like a chore rather than an adventure. While the challenge is there, it feels narratively vapid, like the writers saw the story of Gen. 3 games & said "let's do that, but BIGGER." I look forward to your playthroughs of both Emerald & OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire. Those are remakes that decided to improve on the weaknesses of the core Ruby/Sapphire games, and both new & old versions are their own fulfilling experiences.
I find that gen 4 was just plain forgettable. I can run through the game just fine. but I cannot recall a single gym leader afterwards. then there's also the fact that much like Gen 2 the 2nd part of the game absolutely every single trainer caps out at level 30 when you're in your early 40-50. the Elite 4 is without a doubt the most brutal difficulty spikes in the game.
As someone who _didn't_ like Gen 4, but only played Diamond and Pearl, I really need to get around to starting up a Platinum file to see how much it can change my mind. As a kid I didn't like all the backtracking I had to do all the time, I didn't like the Surf and general game speed or Fog route(s), I disliked Barry and also disliked how hyped Cynthia was, basically only because she averaged 10-15 levels above you if you level matched the rest of the Elite 4. If I could tackle the entire region in any order I wanted, I think Sinnoh would be among my top favourite regions, but it had a lot I didn't like in terms of the way it made you play through it. It certainly has some of favourite pokémon, and by far the most interesting evil team, the best trio of starters, and some of the absolute coolest box art legends, etc. But Diamond and Pearl were not great games, i'd argue not even very good ones. Platinum certainly seems to be the definitive Gen 4 game, but having only had the chance to play Diamond and Pearl, I didn't grow up liking the Sinnoh games much
I don't like dppt and I think bdsp is better because it's UP TO DATE IN QOL and this while I grew up with Gen 4 At the end of the day, people like what they want
After I wrapped up my exhaustive playthrough of BDSP,
I instantly replayed through the entirety of Platinum and it felt like I got to wake up from a month-long fever dream and got to heal.
Yes, I agree. Like really, that's it for Sinnoh? Ugly "faithful" barebones ports of DP? Thanks for nothing, I guess.
W comment
Chibi remakes actually isn't a terrible idea, given that gen 8 doesn't look that good either. In the first trailer of bdsp, it actually looked WAY worse than the eventual release. The second trailer improved heavily on the graphics and I actually got really excited for it. Then it came out, and yeah, it was pretty meh. Not as bad as people say it is, but for a Pokemon remake, it was dissapointing. What is good, is a rom hack called "Luminescent Platinum". This brings the Platinum stuff to bdsp, and making it harder. That is actually worth playing.
A game in sinnoh that actually had more fire types
For real in platium I always use houndoom.
@@nathan25229 i would have bought the remake if it was platinum
Well in bdsp you can find houndoom in the underground
@@jermainespeid4934 that part made me feel like I had the option of typing in gameshark codes to use Pokemon that no NPC above the ground in Sinnoh has access to or is even documented as part of its fauna lol
@@jermainespeid4934 only good part about BDSP
That is the point, the point is that the game rewards u for backtracking and exploring instead of just telling you "go from point a to point b"
exactly, it makes the earlier part of the region more relevant throughout the whole game. In some other games you can just forget a whole city after completing it and it wont matter.
So this is the perspective of people starting from later generations. It's so different yet so interesting seeing what quality of life chnages were made throughout the years that aren't in the previous games making them somewhat more tedious than later expansions. The games were fun, but having some of the modern mechanics would be good
The new games are garbage and these games are objectively better...
@ I love favoritism because it will push GameFreak to make good content again; I provided actual debates many times already
Honestly great comment, you've summed it up really well
@@matty8612 summarised my thoughts exactly!
If you want a breakdown, here are things added to Platinum that were not added to BDSP:
-Battle Frontier
-Resort Chateau
-Charon
-Addition Story Elements, including more inclusion of Cynthia
-Distortion World
Sure, Ramanas Park was added in and Pokémon follow you (poorly implemented to begin with), and the Grand Underground removed Secret Bases and Traps to add extra rooms to catch Pokémon in, but it just feels like the bare minimum effort of adding extra content that doesn't even add much to the overall experience of Sinnoh.
It's WORSE than a Remaster because it REMOVED elements from the originals. Like moves and THEY RUINED CONTESTS. >:( Like what the hell, Masuda??
There is a mod going around for BDSP called Luminescent Platinum, that is turning BDSP into a Platinum remake. I suggest you check it out.
Bruh yeah nvm I pass
Probably my favorite game of all time
10:53 Hi! Hello! Die-hard Gen 4 fan here! (sorry AGAIN for the long comment, I talk way too much)
Hearing a retrospective from someone who played BDSP first, then Platinum, was certainly something I've never heard before, so thank you for sharing what is a pretty unique perspective in the fandom.
@@Hedgie3 Yes this, ICLA wanted to do a much more ambitious game but game freak didn't let them cause they were making Legends Arceus.
Also, plat was the first Pokémon game I ever played. Has always been my favorite, and still is.
Btw, HM stands for hidden move… so hidden moves didn’t “replace” hm’s, they just changed the way hm’s worked
It’s actually Hidden Machine. It’s a machine that teaches the pokemon a move
@@smgric6853 u right
If they would have added Platinum content into BDSP I think those games would have been received a whole lot better
It’s kinda weird that you’re complaining about a Pokemon game being too big and a region not being linear enough. From the start of the game to the point you get fly at the 3rd gym it’s basically a straight shot
The reason Gen 5 was more straightforward than Gen 4 was because Gamefreak apparently heard about Kids getting lost in Sinnoh.
The game points us to a direction and not allowing us to backtrack and just completely give up on backtracking and just let the game tell us what to do.
his attention span has to be cooked
@@CEDL0W for me I couldn't find out what to do after the 7th gym. Just a guy blocking my path saying there's a blackout so I waited
Platinum adding more fire and electric types earlier in the game was needed and the fact that BDSP copied teams from DO shows how bad it was
i love platinum, is my favorite pokemon game ever.
Give Renegade Platinum a try! It’s even better
I do prefer platinum because the story is just better in so many ways over bdsp
Yeah, it actually feels "complete".
There are 3 things that I think are better in Platinum compared to DP/BDSP:
That's it?
i played platinum as a kid and it was my favorite pokemon game for the longest time. bdsp took platinum's place as my favorite pokemon game now because i prefer the faster gameplay, the removal of hms, and being able to play on a tv without 2 screens or a touch screen
I felt this same way about Gen 4 and got flamed for it lol
Pokémon fans really don’t like it when you don’t worship their nostalgia games
9:10 He went on the rival’s character arc 😂😂😂😂😂
Hell yeah!!! Platinum was my first ever Pokemon game!
As someone who played DPPt very early on and still counts it as one of her favorites, this video was a pretty interesting watch-there's problems I'm more used to, but I won't deny they're there. With that being said, the big thing I have to disagree on is the region's design being "confusing."
Pokemon in earlier gens had a metroidvania-like region design-not nearly to the extent of those games' complexity, but the idea is similar.
We need a platinum remake
that would never if game freak doesn't make a crystal remake just like let's go
I highly doubt it'll ever happen.
A just startet playing Luminescent Platinum on a switch emulator. Its a mod for BD. I know, the installation can be tedious but when you get it work, its just a blessing. So if you have the time and motivation. Try it, you wont regret it :D
You cannot truly have "experienced the 4th generation" until you played all the big Gen 4 games, including:
- Platinum
- Heartgold or Soulsilver
- Ranger 1 (is Gen 3, but it kinda counts)
- Ranger 2
- Ranger 3
- and most importantly: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
- also Pokémon Battle Revolution is a nice bonus, but it's not like it's _completely_ essential
Once you played all of them, only then have you had the full "Gen 4 experience"! =P
And you should only play Ranger on a device that has a touchpen, so a DS, 3DS or WiiU.
TMs and Egg Moves further boost learners
defog is def not broken in comp
Only matched by BW2
To me i can never look at the original Diamond & Pearl the same again. With my experience with game development, those just scream rushed and unfinished. Just look at route 228
Still, what might be the main reason i love Sinnoh is because of the atmosphere.
I haven't even gotten 4 minutes in, but I have to thank you so much for listening to the comments!
Pokemon Platinum is the superior version, you forgot to mention the battle frontier. It is only available in Emerald and Platinum, the best post-game in my opinion.
Playing platinum is always the GOAT of gen 4.
However BDSP is super fun when modded!!
I'm disappointed you didn't talk about the post-game :0
I feel like both games are both interesting in our own way also I really really like the expense of this of it it just makes all other Roots just feel that much more special when you’re filled with stuff but I feel that you should play both games as it gives a similar experience to black and black 2 When noticing the differences
I’ve never heard of anyone getting lost in the Sinnoh region besides the top of coronet mountain
We love your videos ❤
I gotta say, i see where you are coming from getting turned around and backtracking, but to me thats actually what i like about sinnoh. In a real country there would be crossroads, and to get to other places you might need to backtrack or revisit old towns. Its actually one thing i dont like about newer games. Sword and shield, felt so linear it was unnatural, and i couldnt get immersed at all, and i love alola but the routes felt like big loops around the island to me most of the time
I strongly agree with you
Gen 4 was peak.
@user-py8oj5yv4mterrible take
The game that made me the Pokemon fan that I am.
Bye 😅
I was a Crystal kid, Gen 2 was my formative Gen, so I have no Gen 4 bias at all
So with that said, I'll die on the hill that THE ONLY reason there is to like BDSP is if you've never played Platinum (same with ORAS and Emerald)
And still maintain that HGSS straight up replace GS AND Crystal, despite my bias towards 8bit music and pixel graphics
Speaking of BDSP not being good, a group of modders are putting so much effort into fixing it with a mod called Luminescent Platinum.
Honestly I’d pay for a platinum remake
Brotha what how do you play the 2d games before the 3d games?
You forgot the battle frontier
0:42 most of us would go odd at you
You should experience platinum with luminescent platinum. That is a remake of platinum that modders made with bdsp engine
(Jynx, Mamoswine, Froslass, Glalie, Weavile & Abomasnow)
3. (Yet, I still had a rough time against Flint)
8. Here are two points BDSP get over ORAS: Classic DS Sounds (Which are bad) & Character Customization (While restrictive, isn't bad)
9. 3D Models look pretty good.
Theres lots of screen errors in the footage
Edit: watched far enough now to know you did lol. I think the emulator takes away a bit from the game, but that could just be my experience.
Quick question if you can live in the pokemon world which region would you life in? I'll be in Kalos
It'd be either Johto or Galar for me :)
It's so weird you just don't mention any of the big changes from BDSP over to Platinum, especially post game ngl. But even on the main game it's not just the order but the complete overhall of enemy trainers, wild encounters and the dex that manages to be better than BDSP even with the underground encounters.
You'd love it even more if you played Renegade Platinum :3
I can’t blame you that you didn’t play diamond and pearl like me I didn’t even play gold and silver I just played the remake but I did play sliver
I wish they re-made Platinum instead of BDSP. I like the idea of the chibi-aesthetics, but D/P are simply incomplete without the platinum-content.
Had you tried other games that are like pokemon? Like Yaoling the mythical journey?
The only bad thing about these games is HMs.
Also, how are you going to talk about the entire game EXCEPT for the battle frontier?
I.e. THE WHOLE SELLING POINT OF PLATINUM??
I see all of those black dots. You playing on DeSmuME?
I played both Johto and Sinnoh in my 20's and I love Johto, can't say the same about Sinnoh. So I'm not sure I agree with the nostalgia take.
Game speed is the reason I personally can't play the gen 4 games on DS. I just can't go back that far.
@@Shinntoku platinum fixed the speed a lot, it really was only bad in diamond and pearl
@@Le_Sino0w0 it didn't fix it enough for me. I tried to play heart gold and couldn't even stick with it long enough to hatch the egg Elm gives you.
Congratulations for finally playing platinum. I honestly still prefer bdsp because of the new features
I'm considering doing the same but bdsp was rlly fun. I don't want to play the old one of its just a literal copy
@@4er4844 I'm not saying there are no better remakes. I'm just saying that BDSP have their redeeming qualities too.
@user-py8oj5yv4m They're perfectly decent remakes IMO.
I just recently played platinum and white 1 for the first time a few months ago. Idk I like sinnoh more than gen V but I think white is a better game
And game speed the only thing worse in DP compared to platinum imo is the surf speed and dmg in battle
Thank you! Literally what I've been saying
I like both Platinum and BDSP, both for different reasons. Neither is a bad game.
Yeah like at least play legends Arceus if you're gonna play gen 4 on the switch 😂
"Hey Craig, what's the name of the third member of the Loyal Three alongside Munkidori and Fezandipiti?"

Favourite comment!
I think platinum and bdsp are good platinum is a bit better but both are good ways to play gen 4
3 games & said "let's do that, but BIGGER."
I look forward to your playthroughs of both Emerald & OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire.
Platinum certainly seems to be the definitive Gen 4 game, but having only had the chance to play Diamond and Pearl, I didn't grow up liking the Sinnoh games much
I don't like dppt and I think bdsp is better because it's UP TO DATE IN QOL
and this while I grew up with Gen 4
At the end of the day, people like what they want
