@@admraycountryballs What we imply in B2W2 is that the MC is going on a journey outside of Unova with Zekrom/Reshiram, which is why he does not assume the role of champion, similar to what Red did. Hilbert/Hilda may have defeated Alder, but he may not have, the fact is that Alder remained Champion until Iris took over.
Your rivals completely serve a purpose. You just didn’t realize it. One of them is weak and isn’t meant to be a Pokémon trainer. The other is strong, but finds that his strength is still not enough to be the best. They both have to work with what they have, and become better people in the future, which is reflected in the sequel
I agree with this comment! I also think it serves to tie with the message that not everything is so black and white as the games title's suggest, that there is more to being just weak or strong
I Love them. Finally some people you can call friends in the world who started at same time, walked the same route and join battles from time to time in the story and no problems with "Rivals took the weak or strong starter" no they took both.
Facts, Bianca realizing she wasn’t meant to be the average pokemon trainer and changing her profession to something she’s good at instead was huge character development
@@mesmorrow What's funny is that horde battles are actually _worse_ for trying to catch a pokemon, because you still have to knock out 4 before you can try to catch the 5th, and with 1 pokemon & a massive level gap. Worst of all is to catch a 'mon like Seviper that spawns in a horde of Zangoose--what a stressful time trying to keep it alive!
Double grass encounters are retarded. It’s not a “wild” take. Just accept the fact that someone else out there has an opinion that you don’t agree with.
@@kalejuice5701og dp are miles better than brain dead diamond and shitting pearl. If people need to make their pokemon hate them because of the accursed happiness mechanic then ur really screw up big time.
@@haroldnecmann7040 BDSP is so much better than OG DP.... It only gets hate because it's not in the style of gen 8 and 9. I had so much fun with BDSP and the improvements they did add really improve the game. Sure it's no ORAS, but it's a fun game to play!
@@haroldnecmann7040 No, they aren't because those games are nearly identical ports. Plat is still the definitive way to play gen 4 because it fixes a lot of core issue DP have. If DP were actually solid games, BDSP would reflect that. Gotta remove nostalgia bro.
Small little piece of trivia, Ghetsis is the only trainer who has a Pokémon use Frustration as one of their four moves. His Hydreigon absolutely hates him and part of Ghetsis’s design is having a scarred face.
His right arm is also like scorched black. You can see it in the black and white intro when he places the crown on N, and he always has that arm hidden in his cloak in his official art.
I want to play Black 2. Should I skip the prequel or buy both 1 and 2? After reading other peoples opinion on this I’m leaning towards buying both to get the full story and experience.
@@Isildur94both. There are a lot of call backs to the first game in the sequel. Even mentions of the trainer you play as in 1. It’s fun and adds to the sequel for sure.
I think it's funny because I have a vastly different opinion of the rivals in this game. This game did a great job with the rivals because the themes of their journeys is growing up through experience. The aged up characters to 14, means they are teenagers trying to find their way through life. For example, Cheren is an arrogant, but intelligent person who learning, but who thinks he knows everything, but as he travels and fights the MC, he realizes that what he knows is actually very little. He it builds up until the final battle in Victory Road, where he finally realizes that his mindset was flawed from the beginning and he should go back to the basics and try to relearn everything from a new perspective. This is capitalized on perfectly in the sequel where we see that Cheren's love of learning doesn't change, but his attitude toward it does and we find him as the teacher of the trainer school and also a gym leader, two positions where his love of learning can be shared with others! Then you have Bianca, a ditzy girl that just wants to get out from under her father's watchful eye and explore the world. She has no goals, no purpose, she just wants to explore and learn new things, free from any restrictions. Bianca also loves to learn, but in a different way from Cheren. This excitement in Bianca builds up until Bianca I defeated by her dad in a pokemon battle and is forced to come home. But Bianca convinces her dad that while her journey was to get away from him, it was a lot of fun and she fell in love with Pokemon and learning about them in a new way. She ends up deciding that she doesn't want to be a pokemon trainer, after all, she was never any good at that anyway, but she loved learning about Pokemon. This leads her to think about becoming a pokemon professor, like Juniper, to continue to learn about Pokemon, just in a new way that excites her. In the sequel, we see her as an assistant to Juniper and a budding pokemon professor in her own right. Both Cheren and Juniper had different ways of growing, but they both loved learning. They realized, through their experiences, that they loved learning, but for the wrong reasons, and when thinking about it, they realized why they loved learning and how best to continue doing so in the future. Honestly, their stories are honestly some of the best coming-of-age stories I've ever seen, and I'm quite saddened you missed it.
Gen 5 is so underrated. The story is beautiful, along with the scenery, the characters are well written, N is hot, and the pokemon are gorgeous especially Meloetta and Reshiram. Like omfg 😭 ❤ dont forget the music too omfg I live for the music
Man, I love gen 5. Still my favorite games from this franchise. I remember laying on my stomache as a kid, playing Black on my DS. I love the Pokémon from this gen, too. I actually really like the idea of gen 1 counterparts. Nature's full of counterparts between species. Shoot me dead if you want, but I really love Simipour, and I'll stand by that statement. The hippie hairdo, the cutesy eyes, the laidback vibe. I can't see why people despise it so much. Cheren and Bianca are possibly my favorite rivals. They really seem like actual friends to the main character in a more casual way that doesn't feel forced like the XY rivals do. It really feels like you've known them for a while. It's like your friends from school hanging out with you in the afternoon after school. Which is perfect considering Cheren's clothing. The animated sprites show so much character from the Pokémon and trainers you encounter, as well.

Ah, Generation 5. My favourite Gen from the day I first played the games. To see the love this gen has received in recent years has been so nice, considering how viciously hated it was on release. I am SO sorry for how long this comment is, Gen 5 is very special to me. I think the Seasons were a fantastic idea I would *love* to see return, but on a weekly rotation. The way it works in Gen 5 just takes WAY too long, so you're borderline forced to manipulate the clock to see and do everything. Doubles Grass was so fun, but may Nintendo have mercy on the souls of all those who got double Shinies and had to kill one - you are all eternally in my thoughts. I'm a big fan of Triples, but then again I'm a huge fan of Doubles so is anyone shocked? I do find it odd that Triples and Rotation never properly returned, would like to see how future Pokémon/Abilities interacted with them. Musicals were a worse Contest, glad they never came back. The Unovan Dex either matches or exceeds the Hoenn Dex as my favourite in the series. I love SO many Pokémon from Unova, and of course my beloved Gigalith makes its home here too. While it absolutely did not pay off due to fans too-focused on past generations, I absolutely loved how unique Unova felt by keeping it's dex entirely in-generation. I wish we would have this again, but it won't ever happen. I have to disagree completely on Bianca and Cheren I'm afraid 😭 Bianca was my favourite rival in the series up to Arven, and Cheren ranked above the midpoint too. They may not be Blue or Silver levels of plot-relevant, but that's half the point - there can only be one chosen hero, and it's you and N fighting for it. Bianca is on a journey to have fun and discover herself, and her team is all Pokémon with story relevance. Cheren is trying to be the best, and switches strategies to cover his weaknesses so he can make it to the top, and of course has his revelation with Alder. They feel like actual friends, who all care for one another but are set on different paths in life. They're representative of the main themes of the game - Bianca discovers her personal truth, her reason for being, and understands who she is as a result of her journey, and Cheren represents how ideals can shift, that he is more than an obsession with being the best, that strength is just one part of his ideal self. No problem with you disliking them tho of course I love Team Plasma, and especially N and Ghetsis, but my problem with them is that they are very heavy handed at points, the Munna scene comes to mind, where they immediately reveal that Ghetsis is manipulating people and doesn't actually believe what he's saying. I also miss Admins, Team Plasma technically has them (the Sages) but we never battle them. Though the Grunts in the castle being reluctant to release their Pokémon is cool. The music of Gen 5 is probably one of the highest points of the franchise, I can't think of a single track I dislike, genuinely. Accumula, Route 10, Elite 4, N, Ghetsis, Driftveil, Village Bridge, Chargestone Cave's music getting deeper with every floor down you go, the various musicians around the region who actively change the music when you stand near them. I don't think this much care has been put in a soundtrack before or since. Would recommend people to listen to the track N^n (yes that's spelt right), I believe it's an unused track, an official "remix" of N's theme. This was a great video Craig, super excited for you to experience the sequels, they are fantastic games in their own right. I love seeing people talk about this generation, perhaps a bit too much 😅 Glad you enjoyed BW!
I feel like pokemon company has done us gen 5 fans dirty by releasing pokemon legends a.z. we wanted a gen 5 remake and a legends gen 5 game. Gen 6 needs to wait their turn 😂 Edit, when I replayed gen 6 a couple months back I remember a courtyard place where there was reshiram and zekrom statues and the statues had a plaque that read something like kalos and unova are connected in some way. So I hope they incorporate that somehow in legends a.z
@@furball192 I genuinely think that the reason Gen 5 hasnt been revisited is because Gamefreak have no clue how to do it. 1) Gen 5 is two very distinct games. You CANNOT remake only BW, the sequels are too important. But thats a lot of time to spend remaking Unova. 2) The in-gen dex was hugely unpopular on release. They're probably panicking about a repeat of that hate. 3) Fairy once again creates more problems than it solves. With just two (non-Mega) Fairies in the Unova dex, Cottonee and Whimsicott (which is also a version exclusive line), they have no idea how to implement the Type. This is especially weird because of Hydreigon - the boss of the game is weak to a Type only a version exclusive Pokémon has? Way to skew your sales.
@@yukiizura I would hope to think they make enough money to pay for the best team and software to make gen 5 remakes. They should do like they did with heartgold soulsilver, have a pokemon super fan remake the games. I heard that the director for heartgold soulsilver games waited in line in Japan for the original gold and silver games to be the first to buy them. Someone like that has got to have fresh ideas while still commemorating nostalgia and connecting the dots for unfinished lore
Most of my favorite pokemon are from gen 5. Gigalith, osawatt, eelektross krookadile, snivy, victini ,scraffy and I may be biased since the most exposure to pokemon was the generation 5 show. I like how gen 5 is a soft reboot of all pokemon and I think the designs are better than what they are based off.
I totally disagree on your statement that the rivals serve no purpose. Were you speedrunning the storyline? Because there’s no way you miss the massive amount of times they appear and are involved with the plotline. We actually get to see bianca grow as a challenger along the way after defeating her with the emotional commentary she consistently gives, not only that but she is very much involved in helping pokemon, like the kidnappng of munna after beating the first gym leader, her pokemon getting stolen after, the story between her dad trying to take her back home and she even tries to help you figure the way out in the Chargestone’s cave after defeating clay. She also continuously appears when there’s a search for team plasma, i’m pretty sure she is involved enough to say she makes an impact in the storyline way more than other rivals in other games. Moreover, for Cheren, he definitely helps a lot, he helps you fight team plasma on instances like after defeating the first gym leader at the cave, Castelia city at the cold storage, in the desert resort, he helps you fight team plasma again in dragonspiral tower and even teaches you how to climb the statues to find your way in, then he also appears trying to help once you defeat N. That’s without mentioning the amount of times he’s involved in searching for plasma too, cheren shares a lot of company with you, without him or bianca the story would make no sense. They give that sense of seriousness and importance to the game. You were absolutely wrong on that point.
@@joshuaandersonanderson5509 A videogame I’ve been playing for abt 13 years LOL i’m pretty sure I put the slightest effort into that paragraph. The gen 4 "remake" is in no way indicative of what the actual gen is like. Even if you have to play a fake copy, I beg that you play either platinum or HGSS, actually, you should probably play both. They are completely different experiences and have so much life and love in them.
Agreed massively, HGSS is my favourite and I have 350 hours in it on my original save but platinum will always be a close second. This is coming from someone who started with Emerald. Gen V really feels like the limelight has changed on it due to people’s who’s first games were Gen V, are now old enough to voice an opinion.
Facts! HG/SS is one of the best games in the franchise. Johto is my least favorite region and generation, and I had to say, I was obsessed with this game. The music, story, events, re-battle gyms, and the POKEATHOLON!!!
Yall are over reacting I played platinum pearl Dimond and the gen 4 remake you all got to understand. bdsp is a remake of Dimond and pearl, not platinum bdsp is a fun game and it's to over hated and it does a great job at recreating the og games
@@dogystuf3173 Its really not, the game stripped off so much of what was fun, the underground and contests, they improved none of the mistakes, added no new content other than the 'super' underground, continues to mainstays of its own region until post game like gliscor, where are the new map locations? Any sort of extra content? Its a remaster of DP, and a bad one at that. Imagine being a gen 8 game with nothing but gen 4 pokemon.
What I love is how everyone has their own favorites in Pokémon. I love Mienshao for example, probably my favorite Gen 5 ‘mon, and for you he’s forgettable. I just love that different aspects and Pokémon leave a different impression on each person that plays the game. Each Pokémon is loved by someone.
I feel like, because of the bw pokedex being just new pokemon, gen 5 in particular has a lot of different favourites for different people. Since noone had any preconceptions or attachments, we all used very unique teams
As others have said, there is a Hall of Fame. You have to battle through the League again where you can then battle Alder and enter the Hall of Fame. The story pretty much truly ends there.
I'm currently revisting this gen right now and there is so much I didn't notice before than I am now and it's insane. As for the rivals, they absolutely serve their purpose when you read their dialogue. Bianca wants to learn how to build relationship with Pokeon and Cheren wants to learn what it means to be a strong Trainer.
Build a relationship with pokemon be a stronger training you just prove his point why they served no purpose everyone in a pokemon game wants to do this so your comment is stupid sorry not sorry
@@joshuaandersonanderson5509 No I didn't prove his point at all because it brings personality to the character as you're moving along the journey. You see them grow into the characters you meet in Part 2, where Bianca understands the importance of building a relationship with Pokemon and studies them to understand them better while Cheren acts as a Gym Leader to demonstrate that strength comes within and mentors those on how to achieve it. So it was very much needed and also ties into the plot with Team Plasma and N and how they view themselves as being strong and how they view their relationships with Pokemon.
@@joshuaandersonanderson5509 yapping about facts, which if you scroll through the whole comments sections, they basically saw the same things and got the same messages.
Technically you don't become champion when you beat the game since you were interrupted. You need to go though it again and beat Alder to enter the Hall of fame. They'll be at their rematch levels so it won't be easy. I really like Gen 5 and it's easlly my favorite gen. It wasn't until Legends Arceus that I was really excited playing a Pokémon game. Scarlet and Violet as well.
I liked Cheren and Bianca. Bianca is a great character who tries to better herself even if she’s not the best trainer. Cheren is a genuine threat of a rival who has confidence and charisma. But N is the best rival and I like him so much more.
I'd argue that the gen 5 rivals are the best in the series. Honestly, I'm not super fond of the first 4 rivals. Gen 1/2 were pretty generic assholes, without much depth or interest. Gen 3s rivals are pretty bland, and gen 4s is annoying as hell. But gen 5 gives you 3 very interesting rivals. Cheren and bianca both believe they want to be strong trainers, but haven't really thought through what that means to them. For Bianca, she wants to become more independent and capable, and believes she'll accomplish that by being a strong trainer. But she realizes that battling isn't something she actually wants for herself, and instead reassesses, and is able to realize herself as a pokemon researcher instead. Cheren believes he should be a strong trainer, but hasn't worked out why. Hes repeatedly confronted throughout the game with people asking why he wants power, and what he'll do when he has it, and at first he doesn't even seem to understand the question. His story is a very well done deconstruction of the players own role in the story, as we need to find answers to the same questions. Then theres N, who pulls double duty as both evil team boss and rival. He similarly grapples with his place in the world, being groomed his whole life by gehtsis to fulfill a role he's not sure the meaning of. Honestly, so much better than anything seen before or since
Mienshao was so swaggy first time i saw him was on the grass and the dude actually destroyed my entire team, made no sense, i fell in love with him since then hes on my top 10
Something about the double encounters thing: On most of the routes, maybe all of them, you can choose to go in normal grass and avoid it. Also, to pass a turn , you can use items to heal, x items, or whatever to help pass the turns. Good luck with the sequels soon
4:50 or spam small heals so you don't have to switch out. You'll only ever need to use like 3 of them in any double battle, and double battles in the wild are so rare you won't even notice it
Unova means a lot to me and I’m happy people are experiencing it even if it’s many years later. It goes to show how peak it is that despite Gen 5 being over 12 years old that people can still see all the amazing things they have to offer! I had a few things I disagree with but there are other comments that mention em so I don’t feel the need to lawl 😂 Great video man!
I quite liked Bianca and Cheren and how they grew, yes it's very subtle, but I really like it. The fact the Bianca had to come to terms with the fact not everyone is cut out to being the champion or super strong like you and Cheren are in the games, and going on a Pokémon journey isn't just about becoming champion but a stepping stone to find your interests in the Pokémon world. I also really liked Alder and Cheren's interactions where Cheren had to realize that being the champion isn't just about being the strongest, but caring about all of the people and Pokémon in the region as well. Underrated rivals in my opinion.
One of my favorite things about this game are the Plasma grunts. As you talk with them, you begin to realize that not everyone is on the same page. Talking to them after beating them individually allows you to learn a bit more of their perspective. There are those who are clearly using Team Plasma for power, and so verbally abuse their pokémon for losing. But there are also those who genuinely believe that what they're doing is for the greater good. By the end, there are numerous grunts who realize that they'll have to say goodbye to the pokémon who they have developed friendships with when Team Plasma wins. They didn't know better, but they were conned by evil people who used their good intentions.
I'd be surprised if pokemon tried the only new mon idea thing again. Black and white was a nice revamp to bring in old and new players to start from point one again and I'm sure they could definitely try it again I mean we know some pokemon or outside creatures are starters so that could be a region of its own and give the chance for new fans to get a fresh start. Then post game or sequel a region with a lot of the older mons
I was in the group that really loved the "Only New Pokemon" thing they did for these games, but I had some friends who were angry that they couldn't just use their old faves, and to a point i understand it. You have old faves and want to enjoy them in a new adventure, but at the same time, only being able to use the new ones can help you appreciate and find new faves. I was really into it. :)
You need to play the original diamond and pearl, platinum if you can. Also heart gold or soulsilver. Gen 5 is my absolute favorite gen of pokemon. I love everything about gen 5, the anime, games, the tcg of that Era, the pokemon from gen 5 are all my favorite. I love Vanillite and trubbish and excadril they are all sooo cute
You like the elemental monkey...? INSTANT LIKE FROM ME! FINALLY THEY GET SOME LOVE! And then you dissed mienfoo and vullaby lines... (also trust me, mandibuzz did NOT fade into obscurity, as it's a pretty strong competative pokemon) also the gates of victory road are just... *chef's kiss* the atmosphere and theming... and then the music... As for the rivals... remember the theming of the games; Truth and Ideals. Bianca spends her entire journey escaping the truth; that she just is not cut out to be a trainer. Her dad warned her of this, but she did not listen. When her dad showed up in Nimbasa, Bianca needed Elisa's help to even remotely keep her freedom, which showed her that being a trainer is not for her... but that doesn't mean that there are other ways for her to keep active with pokemon. Meanwhile Cheren keeps chasing his ideal of being the strongest trainer... but that's all it is; an aimless ideal. When you and Cheren meet Alder in the road left of Nimbasa, Alder immediately challenges his ideal by simply pointing out that his ideal doesn't actually have any meaning. He doesn't know what it means to be a strong trainer, he only knows he wants it. Up until this point, Cheren has always been the "plan ahead and duse strategy" person, but never really thought about what it truly means to be a pokemon trainer. Outside of story reasons, they also serve a gameplay purpose. Bianca, being clearly the weaker trainer, serves the purpose of helping the player level up naturally without much difficulty, as well her caring nature making sure the player is always prepared. Cheren, meanwhile, is supposed to serve the purpose of a skill check fight; making sure you are keeping up and ready to take on whatever is next. you even see this in their placement. At the start, you fight bianca first (who has the starter weak to yours, to make sure you know type matchup and basics of fighting), which sets you up for the Cheren fight (who has the starter strong to yours, to test you if you truly understand and are ready). Then next up, you fight Bianca before you enter the city of the first gym; it's an easy fight, but provides you with exp to make sure you are on-par with the gym trainers without needing much grinding. Then Cheren is fought right before you can enter the gym. Remember the theme of this gym? Type matchup. You fight the leaders with the monkey strong to your starter. And Cheren puts emphasis on this point by doing something no rival has ever done before or after him; lead off with his starter, despite having multiple pokemon. His starter is even holding an oran berry, something rarely seen by other rivals. His entire fight is there to make sure you can handle the type strong to your starter. This theming continues throughout the story. Even if we look at the post-game fight you can have with Cheren... he is using some seriously dangerous sets. Even putting a dragon gem on haxorus, scope lens on his unfezant with the super luck ability, leftovers on his gigalith... so no, you can most definitely NOT remove them. Bianca for the purpose of keeping the player (especially new fans) up-level, and Cheren for making sure the player (once again especially new players to pokemon) is on the right skill-level to move on. Side-note, I love how you show team neo-plasma when talking about team plasma xD fun little side-detail about N; since he grow up in isolation and is pretty obviously neurodivergent, he is socially awkward, which is reflected in the fact that his dialogue box text moves faster than that of any other character. Not even a single mention of the adeptive music? Like how accumula town's music can have instruments added to it by talking to specific NPC's? Or as mentioned before, the victory road gate music, which builds up from semi-silent background sounds, to a full fletched victory song, with every gate you open? And not even a mention of the credits song?! CRIMINAL
I never hated the elemental monkeys, and I chose Snivy too, so I got Panpour, which is arguably the best one, but it got outclassed real quick. By the time I reached Clay, it was already outclassed and I needed to find a new water type
i played this just as spring ended and transitioned into summer, it was very cool watching the transition of the world. also driftvale city music is a banger.
What I haven't realized until very very recently is that even on the cover of black and white there is true no black and white. It's all just varying shades of gray. Just like in the games themselves
Honestly black and white could have been the time pokemon branch our their franchise and split it off into another one. I could honestly see this more adult like game with deeper messaging and their own mons. I mean later games they are hinting at some rare or legend mons being starters in another universe
Great Video. N is the rival. And as for graphics, that's a can of worms. It was panned because it was not 3D. Even though most people today say its the best looking one lol.
After you do the elite four twice, pleeeeeass play black 2 also. It’s much different you start off as a new player. There are surf spots post game and route 17 by your house as well where you are rewarded for exploration which i liked too
You haven't really played gen 4, man. Post-game content peaked in Gen 4 in my opinion, Gen 5 post-game is still respectable, but saying you played Gen 4 bc you played BDSP is like saying you played FR/LG when you actually played Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu.
@@PanduhCJ the problem with BDSP is not the graphic style itself (but on that note, there is a reason why chibi Dawn is an infamous moment in Pokémon history, no one was expecting that and LG Pikachu/Eevee are imo the best looking Switch Pokémon games, why they went with the chibi style still eludes me). The actual problem is that every other remake added content to their games, FRLG had basically a new region, HGSS had the Gen 4 post game and even ORAS had Megas and the Delta Episode. BDSP literally does the bare minimum to the point Platinum is still the most complete Sinnoh game bc it adds stuff to DP. My comparison with FRLG and Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu is in regards to content, even though FRLG was launched years prior, it still has more content and is a more complete Gen 1 experience. For what is worth, I actually enjoyed a lot Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu, it serves well as an entry point for Pokémon Go players, is very good-looking, it was very polished for the time and ultimately it is harmless to the franchise in general, it was never supposed to be the ultimate Gen 1 experience. BDSP on the other hand was supposed to be that, instead they went for the literal bare minimum, cut back basically all Platinum added content and added very little in terms or new content (content that imo doesn't even come closer to compensate the cutback one and it is still not on par with the additions in other remakes). For what it's worth, I actually think remaking Gen 5 in HD-2D is at least an interesting idea visually, it would actually be even more close to the original style than chibi and at the same time, would probably not have the jarring proportions that chibi had. TDR: Platinum has more content than BDSP and is the current ultimate Gen 4 experience.
This game was absolutely mind-blowing to me when I played this back in 2011, and it's still great today. It was sad to see them get so much blacklash, and I'm happy to see that they're generally looked back on fondly now. Though, I think a lot of that comes from people seeing how awful the newer games are and realizing that Gen 5 did so much to push the franchise forward.
My first ever pokemon game was white 2. As a kid I got a used soul silver for my birthday a little while after white 2, I emulated fire red on my tablet, and experienced gens 6 and 7 as they came out so I missed on black/white as well. About a year ago I borrowed my brothers copy of pokemon black and played through it blind and holy shit!!!! That game is peak. I’m honestly glad I waited until I was older so I could really appreciate how good that game is
great video, really enjoyed it! it's too bad you didn't get to experience the full seasons system, because it was SO cool how the seasons also influenced the map itself! icirrus city had an item on a cliff that's unobtainable in all seasons but winter, when a giant snow pile lets you climb up. OH and when the background music changes when you talk to npcs with instruments? village bridge making a game out of finding all the musicians to complete the bgm? CRAZY
Nowadays gamefreak would be mindblowed to know this game has such a feature. That time seemed like the group making the games actually were fans and having fun making it, they were doing things just for the heck of being cool, the entire DS era was entirely like this 😊
I like the design of the Protagonist of this series because they look a little older than past games which I appreciated because it felt like the series was gonna grow up...but that didn't last long...oh well
While the first mainline Pokémon game I played was my little brother’s copy of Diamond, Pokémon Black was the first game I can call my own. I rebought the game last year to relive my nostalgia.
I still have the copies I bought all the way back at release. I have Black; White; Black 2; White and they’re in pristine condition. I must go back to playing them eventually. I miss Pokémon. Haven’t played it since 2013-2014 ish
I recently got my own copy of Pokemon White. I played those games before on emulator but now i used only Bug Types. I love that they introduced so many different bugs. It was tough but very fun experience. Anyway. Onto gym leaders. I love that they have some job themes and that they actually do something more in the story not just to be beaten and forgotten
6:08 😅 The only loophole in that is if a person is friends with or has a copy that does have a complete set of the game then they ship over Pokemon that wasn't supposed to be there from before the main story is complete through trading mechanic I'm guilty of doing that with nearly every Pokemon game new & old trading in Pokemon that wasn't supposed to be there until after the main story was complete however I just love having Eevee & Pikachu along with a few others before completing the main story
Yeah, N really makes up for how dull Cheren and Bianca are by being one of the most interesting characters in the series. Unova's biggest strengths are easily the variety of in its locations. The towns and routes are really visually distinct and they're really elevated by some of the best pixel art on the DS.
So much of the black and white games is the post game and all the challenges and puzzles. Like someone else said you need to run through the E4 again for hall of fame
I personally love the monkeys, Especially panpour, because i played this online mmo version of Pokemon with gen 5, i chose snivy and i got stuck with the Goofy blue monkey, also cress's panpour in the anime is goated
Gen 5 is easily my favourite set of games. Definitely recommend playing the sequel as it provides additional story for Team plasma and the rival, while i found him a bit annoying, also had a point to him being there.
One thing I didn’t understand was your rating system. If the music was a 9.5/10, what Pokémon game is a 10? I feel like there needs to be a game as a 10 for each category in order to properly rank them. Otherwise it’s arbitrary
3:57 😅 in dark grass area if a player is talented enough could just knock out one of the Pokémon then their health weakened or status effects While the other one that you plan to capture the Other one players doesn't necessarily have to use both Pokemon to attack the one they're trying to capture at all Heck even after status effect or weakening the one they're trying to capture you could just have the other Pokemon get healed or do nothing while the other turn moveset throw a Pokeball I guess that's a bit too difficult for rookies because I'm a veteran at That I've never had any issue keeping one wild Pokemon from getting knocked out while knocking out the others plus it's a great opportunity to have a chance of running into a Shiny Pokemon
Before I get to deep into the video, I’ll say this game is a 10/10 Graphics Gameplay Aesthetic Music Story Details All 10/10 Only gripe is the linear map. The towns and cities are great, but not much exploration is available
The rivals get further developed in BW2. For that reason and many others, you should definitely check out the sequels. They do a lot to add to the first games
The thing is, i with the exception of keldeo, landorus and gensect used every pokemon in the game for the run and none of them weren’t valuable and were all good and fun to use for me. So i’m really attached to this generation
So did you defeat Ingo in the battle subway boss battle? Also there’s a few other surprises in BW that you may not have seen yet for example the shaking grass for a rare Pokemon
Still in the topic of the Pokédex, it's interesting to see that Gen 5 is the only generation to not have any interaction with the Pokémon from the generations that came before it, even today... Gen 6 had Sylveon, Mega Evolution and the addition of the Fairy-type itself, if you want to count it; Gen 7 had regional variants and exclusive Z-Moves; Gen 8 had regional variants, regional evolutions (like Obstagoon and Overqwil), G-Max forms, new forms (Origin Dialga and Palkia) and even a new legendary for an existing group in Enamorus; and, lastly, Gen 9 has regional variants, regional evolutions (Clodsire), brand-new cross-gen evolutions, convergent evolutions (Wiglett, Toedscool and Poltchageist) and Paradox Pokémon; with Gens 2, 3 and 4 having at least cross-gen evolutions (and Gen 1 doesn't count because it doesn't have a generation that came before it, of course)
I agree with everything except for the Villain team. Everyone always overrates Team Plasma as "dark" and whatever but... The truth is that they are just your regular silly villain team. Doing silly things like hiding in a fridge, stealing pokemon or a bike because yes. And there's also Getsis, a leader that's bad because reasons and is telling everyone he's actually bad and just wants to rule the world everytime he meets someone. The game reveals it to the player since the very first town (for kids to know he's the evil one, do not think), repeating it again in the first city in case you missed it... And many other times through the game just for the sake of revealing it AGAIN as a kind of "plot twist" situation at the very end of the game :O But yes, they're really dark and smart for the first time wahahaha
Found my way here cause I just picked up Black for the first time. Doing a SR for shiny starter😢. Hopefully you can do a review on Soul Silver or Heart Gold sometime!
3:57 🤔 although regardless of past generation or current generation games it's quite dumb to have the mechanic in the game saying that you have to knock one of them out or all of them out in order to capture one Pokemon because realistically a person will be able to aim their Pokeball at their intended Target because of that annoying mechanic of knocking out other Pokemon that was the cause of so many people out there unfortunately having a shiny fail I truly wish that Nintendo would fix that especially right now with the modern Pokémon games although that flaw of the mechanic Chef never been there in the first place
I disagree about the rivals. cheren in particular serves a thematic perspective on people's relationship with pokémon as trainers that is challenged throughout the story. maybe not anything groundbreaking but he and bianca both have true character arcs, which is more than can be said for any rival in the series. they aren't my favorites either, but I wouldn't say they're forgettable
Black and White were a great soft reboot for the game even if people hated it for just using the gen5 150 list it was a great experience overall with a decent story i suggest also playing the remakes it will give both a BW nostalgia and a very great sequel as for your gen4 experience being BDSP it is a decent game but felt lackluster as a remake, if you ever have the time platinum is a more definitive gen4 experience
I'm playing this game right now and after seeing so much love for the game, I am truly disapointed so far, MOST (not all) pokemons designs are weird, trainers have all the same pokemons, gym leaders are forgetable ...

@@Nagatem I was so confused when he said that? They actually had true character development.
Facts, Bianca realizing she wasn’t meant to be the average pokemon trainer and changing her profession to something she’s good at instead was huge character development

Genuinely wild that someone can hate the double grass encounters, that’s certainly a take
They were great for EXP grinding, as the pokémon there were usually higher leveled compared to normal grass.
And claim that horde battles are better, like what!?
@@mesmorrow What's funny is that horde battles are actually _worse_ for trying to catch a pokemon, because you still have to knock out 4 before you can try to catch the 5th, and with 1 pokemon & a massive level gap. Worst of all is to catch a 'mon like Seviper that spawns in a horde of Zangoose--what a stressful time trying to keep it alive!
Double grass encounters are retarded. It’s not a “wild” take. Just accept the fact that someone else out there has an opinion that you don’t agree with.

@@haroldnecmann7040 No, they aren't because those games are nearly identical ports. Plat is still the definitive way to play gen 4 because it fixes a lot of core issue DP have.

You need to play Black and White 2 ! For me it's an excellent sequel !
My favourite games and also most played ones
The only one small bad thing about the sequel is no more route 10 and its glorious endgame bgm. Other than that, it's a REALLY good sequel.

No problem with you disliking them tho of course
I love Team Plasma, and especially N and Ghetsis, but my problem with them is that they are very heavy handed at points, the Munna scene comes to mind, where they immediately reveal that Ghetsis is manipulating people and doesn't actually believe what he's saying.
Gen 6 needs to wait their turn 😂
Edit, when I replayed gen 6 a couple months back I remember a courtyard place where there was reshiram and zekrom statues and the statues had a plaque that read something like kalos and unova are connected in some way.

Honestly, so much better than anything seen before or since
Gen 5 was amazing back when they came out, and even now they are amazing. Some of the best story telling in Pokémon imo.
Who tf doesn’t like mandibuzz and mienshao
Most people.
Mienshao probably has the sleekest design from the gen, very well designed
Mienshao was so swaggy first time i saw him was on the grass and the dude actually destroyed my entire team, made no sense, i fell in love with him since then hes on my top 10
Yeah idk what he’s on, if I had to pick the most forgettable mon from gen 5 it’d probably be Beheeyem or something
mandibuzz is really cool but if you play gen 5 comp, its a nightmare
Something about the double encounters thing:
On most of the routes, maybe all of them, you can choose to go in normal grass and avoid it.
I had a few things I disagree with but there are other comments that mention em so I don’t feel the need to lawl 😂
Great video man!
2:05 it really was impressive, it was absurd
I'd be surprised if pokemon tried the only new mon idea thing again. Black and white was a nice revamp to bring in old and new players to start from point one again and I'm sure they could definitely try it again
I mean we know some pokemon or outside creatures are starters so that could be a region of its own and give the chance for new fans to get a fresh start.
(also trust me, mandibuzz did NOT fade into obscurity, as it's a pretty strong competative pokemon)
also the gates of victory road are just...
Side-note, I love how you show team neo-plasma when talking about team plasma xD
fun little side-detail about N; since he grow up in isolation and is pretty obviously neurodivergent, he is socially awkward, which is reflected in the fact that his dialogue box text moves faster than that of any other character.
CRIMINAL
The true Gen 4 experience is in the original DPP, not in the remakes
True gen 4 experience is in Plat. OG DP are also piss. in comparision.
Ohh? That shit sounds fire. I really want that actually. They should’ve thought of this
Double wild encounters makes grinding more fun
Great Video. N is the rival.
And as for graphics, that's a can of worms. It was panned because it was not 3D.
Even though most people today say its the best looking one lol.
After you do the elite four twice, pleeeeeass play black 2 also. It’s much different you start off as a new player. There are surf spots post game and route 17 by your house as well where you are rewarded for exploration which i liked too
You haven't really played gen 4, man. Post-game content peaked in Gen 4 in my opinion, Gen 5 post-game is still respectable, but saying you played Gen 4 bc you played BDSP is like saying you played FR/LG when you actually played Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu.
brain dead take
True
@@PanduhCJ Pokémon fans don't understand their own game most of the time.
@ethanlee4910 fr bro, if they remake gen 5 in hd2d style like octopath I think thats the only way to shut them up.
I’m honestly glad I waited until I was older so I could really appreciate how good that game is
Gen 5 and 7 are my favorite gens and fav pokemon games i ever played! I hope we get a black and white remake one day🤞🏽
great video, really enjoyed it! it's too bad you didn't get to experience the full seasons system, because it was SO cool how the seasons also influenced the map itself! icirrus city had an item on a cliff that's unobtainable in all seasons but winter, when a giant snow pile lets you climb up.
OH and when the background music changes when you talk to npcs with instruments? village bridge making a game out of finding all the musicians to complete the bgm? CRAZY
Nowadays gamefreak would be mindblowed to know this game has such a feature. That time seemed like the group making the games actually were fans and having fun making it, they were doing things just for the heck of being cool, the entire DS era was entirely like this 😊
I like the design of the Protagonist of this series because they look a little older than past games which I appreciated because it felt like the series was gonna grow up...but that didn't last long...oh well
I found the monkeys adorable, actually
Me too they're dead cute ❤
Forget humanity. RETURN TO MONKE
While the first mainline Pokémon game I played was my little brother’s copy of Diamond, Pokémon Black was the first game I can call my own. I rebought the game last year to relive my nostalgia.
“within reason” shows hoenn 😂
I still have the copies I bought all the way back at release. I have Black; White; Black 2; White and they’re in pristine condition. I must go back to playing them eventually. I miss Pokémon. Haven’t played it since 2013-2014 ish
The hall of fame isnt before the credits because you become champion in the post game
If u read N dialog at the pokemon league you will understand why there's no hall of fame for that time
I recently got my own copy of Pokemon White. I played those games before on emulator but now i used only Bug Types. I love that they introduced so many different bugs. It was tough but very fun experience.
Anyway. Onto gym leaders. I love that they have some job themes and that they actually do something more in the story not just to be beaten and forgotten
Can't wait for black 2, easily my favorite game of all time and completely improves on gen 5.
Love how dude played it for the first time and dunks on the rivals and doesn’t know some of the post game things.
gen 3 is my favourite gen but i will unbiasedly admit that b2w2 are the best games in the franchise. you're gonna have a blast with the sequels
If you can get your hands on pokemon black2 you can transfer data from to 2 for a more interesting experances.
6:08 😅 The only loophole in that is if a person is friends with or has a copy that does have a complete set of the game then they ship over Pokemon that wasn't supposed to be there from before the main story is complete through trading mechanic
I'm guilty of doing that with nearly every Pokemon game new & old trading in Pokemon that wasn't supposed to be there until after the main story was complete however
I just love having Eevee & Pikachu along with a few others before completing the main story
You haven’t truly experienced the 4th Gen until you’ve played platinum.
Gen 5 is easily my favourite set of games. Definitely recommend playing the sequel as it provides additional story for Team plasma and the rival, while i found him a bit annoying, also had a point to him being there.
Wow amazing video man
One thing I didn’t understand was your rating system. If the music was a 9.5/10, what Pokémon game is a 10? I feel like there needs to be a game as a 10 for each category in order to properly rank them. Otherwise it’s arbitrary
If it's not a relative scale to begin with then there might not exist a 10.
3:57 😅 in dark grass area if a player is talented enough could just knock out one of the Pokémon then their health weakened or status effects
While the other one that you plan to capture the Other one players doesn't necessarily have to use both Pokemon to attack the one they're trying to capture at all
Heck even after status effect or weakening the one they're trying to capture you could just have the other Pokemon get healed or do nothing while the other turn moveset throw a Pokeball
I guess that's a bit too difficult for rookies because I'm a veteran at That
I've never had any issue keeping one wild Pokemon from getting knocked out while knocking out the others plus it's a great opportunity to have a chance of running into a Shiny Pokemon
Justice for accumula town, best Pokèmon ost
Gen 5 is my favourite cuz of its great storyline and its also depressing
Before I get to deep into the video, I’ll say this game is a 10/10
Graphics
Gameplay
Aesthetic
Music
Story
Details
All 10/10
Only gripe is the linear map. The towns and cities are great, but not much exploration is available
The rivals get further developed in BW2. For that reason and many others, you should definitely check out the sequels. They do a lot to add to the first games
how dare you slander mienfoo line, uturn, regenerator high jumpkick, a monstrous glass canon
7:27 you do know that picture is from Black and White 2 not Black and White
Definitely my favorite game just from story alone
In black 2 my favorite pokemon was easily krookodile. That mf carried me.
Absolutely love black and white as well as black 2 and white 2.
Man u didn't beat the Champion how u gonna get into the hall of fame?
You definitely have to play Black and White 2, it completes the unova saga
I agree with everything except for the Villain team. Everyone always overrates Team Plasma as "dark" and whatever but... The truth is that they are just your regular silly villain team. Doing silly things like hiding in a fridge, stealing pokemon or a bike because yes. And there's also Getsis, a leader that's bad because reasons and is telling everyone he's actually bad and just wants to rule the world everytime he meets someone. The game reveals it to the player since the very first town (for kids to know he's the evil one, do not think), repeating it again in the first city in case you missed it... And many other times through the game just for the sake of revealing it AGAIN as a kind of "plot twist" situation at the very end of the game :O
But yes, they're really dark and smart for the first time wahahaha
Without nostalgia, gen V was peak pokemon
can i play these on pc
Yes. Get the desmume emulator and download the one you want
Found my way here cause I just picked up Black for the first time. Doing a SR for shiny starter😢. Hopefully you can do a review on Soul Silver or Heart Gold sometime!
Love this! It's so refreshing to see a first time take on B/W as opposed to Retrospects
You HAVE to play the sequels for more team plasma backstories
Are you gonna play the sequels instead of a definitive version like crystal emerald platinum we got sequels for these games it’s worth playing!
Why you dont paint your tooth white ?
Gen 4 Platinum is so peak, it’s a needed experience over BDSP
@@Jotos. is platinum better than white and black?
Have you played the Mystery Dungeon games much?
I've never played them but I'm thinking about getting them a go some time soon!
@@aokcraig You should! I personally think they're so much better than the mainline games.
Gen 4 is best enjoyed with platinum, I would recommend you to go back a play Plat, it's better than original D/P and way better than the remakes
Have you played white 2 / Black 2?
Double encounters are good for shiny hunting
How did he play it, no way it was legitimately
Hope we get a remake
9/10 not enough water
Black and White were a great soft reboot for the game even if people hated it for just using the gen5 150 list
it was a great experience overall with a decent story
i suggest also playing the remakes it will give both a BW nostalgia and a very great sequel
as for your gen4 experience being BDSP it is a decent game but felt lackluster as a remake, if you ever have the time platinum is a more definitive gen4 experience
I'm playing this game right now and after seeing so much love for the game, I am truly disapointed so far, MOST (not all) pokemons designs are weird, trainers have all the same pokemons, gym leaders are forgetable ...
😅 I be jamming out to tons of Vids on TH-cam specifically of [ ]Pokémon Gen music hit different type in any of the gen numbers you could watch & listen for yourself
Bro liked the game without even ranking the story and post game
