    The one great use I've found for these pocket rope saws is when you need to cut a limb that's really high. Throw a rope up and over, and then haul this up on a sturdier rope. The key, though, is to have a saw that has teeth on BOTH sides. Otherwise, when you drag it over the limb, it wants to flip to the smooth side as that's the least resistance, and by then you can't flip the chain over. A two-sided rope saw, in my experience, is a great alternative to ladders, pole saws, or an expensive call to the tree trimmer.

    Why wouldn’t you make a partial cut on one side of the tree and then line up and finish through on the other side to prevent the binding? I don’t know, I’m just from the east coast.

    • @Davisinhoptown

      I was thinking the same thing

    • @dlloyd6300
      @dlloyd6300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      that wouldn't solve the binding. that would just move the binding from the edge of the tree towards the center of the tree. the problem mostly comes when the cutting radius becomes too small and the chain teeth dig in instead of chisel material out. The only solution is to attempt to reduce that radius by pulling the chain side to side instead of to and from yourself and that is a much more difficult motion.

    • @MikfinityPog
      @MikfinityPog 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't degrade yourself but, I see where you're coming from although that would equal to the same amount of inconvenience as just cutting through and fighting the bind (once it starts binding you having take it out, reposition yourself, reposition your chain, get down low again, aim the chain to be at the same height as your first cut, start the first cut again which is the hardest cut)

    GREAT video! That little pocket chainsaw would be great to have in our car, because we HAVE encountered small downed trees here in the California Sierra blocking a road after a storm.
    Wild Alpines strawberries have been a favorite, since I was seven (I am old 'smiling') and as we were climbing the north side of Mt St Helen's in Washington state my Dad said 'STOP' and he stood for 30 seconds inhaling the air and then pointed and proclaimed 'wild strawberries!'.
    We (Dad Mom, and Aunt and me) all had two small collapsible canvas buckets and scurried up the mountain, dropped to our knees and for an hour picked strawberries. One for me two for the bucket. We all got a good gallons worth. Then saw huckleberry shrubs and spent another hour filling buckets of huckleberries until a momma bear with two cubs appeared in the distance and we left the area.

    New Englander here, haha. I have one of these, I think it's this exact model. It works quite well. I keep it in my hydration pack so it's with me when I mountain bike, it comes in handy for trail maintenance. Just two weeks ago I used it on a probably 8" tree that had fallen across the trail and was sitting up too high to ride over. I only had binding problems when putting too much force on the chain, if I used light pressure it didn't bind. It made quick work of the tree, probably a lot quicker than if I'd had a hatchet, which would have been much more unwieldy to carry with me. Total cutting time was probably less than 2 minutes.

    I got one like that (maybe the same one). Shortly after it arrived I noticed a dead branch on the Japanese maple so I tested it on that and it worked very well - a nice clean, smooth cut. The only I would change would be to make the handles removable so you could more easily lubricate the chain without getting it on the handles.

    I have that same one and I keep it in my motorcycle camping kit along with my small hatchet. As you mentioned. There are tons of cheap pocket survival saws that are just absolute rubbish and will break the first time you use. This type of pocket saw That is a good quality chain with good handles works surprisingly well. Most people have tried one of those cheap ones and never try another one... this is definitely worth picking up. Great video.

    Pro tip: Put the nozzle right up to the top of the chain and barely press to get a small spray(hardly even enough to get a stream) and let it run down the chain.
    Im a mechanic and have to use wd-40 and other penetrants to loosen stubbern and rusted nuts/bolts. It conserves supplies and generally helps when you want to only saturate the nut/bolt and not have penetrant pouring off of and pooling in areas.

    the big plus of pocket chainsaws is their pack size, I store a 66cm/26" one coiled into a small can for airgun pellets. Their downside is the width of the cut - removing more material takes more ellbow grease; not a big deal when cutting down a single tree once in a while, but cutting up large amounts of firewood in an emergency to survive a cold winter night will tire you fast.
    When using it with two hands as you did, the chain will inevitably bind - unless you attach it to a sturdy curved branch or create a frame saw with it. Keeping the chain somewhat straight helps against binding, can be done handheld by two persons too.
    Stay safe and take care

    When we snowmobile, I always carry a small saw. I've been thinking about buying one of these for the compactness and ability to cut larger logs and trees. Appreciate the review. FYI, I've been using a saw from BCA (Backcountry Access) for the past 6 mos or so; similar to a Silky and has been impressively durable. I'm sure it is just a rebranded saw, but it is a good one and I'm amazed how resistant to bending/kinking it has been.

    I reckon you and Jack working that together would go a treat Cody! You would be able to keep it taught between you and keep it more of a straight edge to help with the binding towards the end. Agree with some of the other comments that this would be great in your dirt bike gear also!
