I was worried at first when you'd mentioned this in a previous video there'd be a risk of the chain breaking and flinging all those teeth at your ankles, but I see now they have rivetted on the rake/tooth pairs around the blade itself. Also pretty clever they offer extra strength by having the blade itself shaped into the tooth and paired next to it but a bit shorter to accommodate loss over time from use and sharpening. Try the renegade razor carbide brush cutter (also on amazon 2 pack 9" blade 68 teeth $32+s/h ). Cuts much faster and has a longer life than the forestry blade just be careful of the rocks and metal pipes. If it gets dull call your local blade sharpener and you are good to go.

Cody coming from a Stihl technician here. the big flat washer should be on there with the arbor. They actually should not come apart. Its all one piece. Helps keep dirt and debris out of those bearings

I just ordered a blade like that this past week. Tried it out this weekend and cleared out about 500 feet of moderately grown in trail in less than an hour. Definitely an effective tool

I removed my previous comment more in disgust than displeasure which compared this circular saw with the post-war Swing Saws that killed so many forestry workers. Sure, this one is much smaller but a jam leading to loss of control can wreak havoc in a fraction of a second.
Loss of legs, or in this case major trauma to the lower legs, will not improve your day.
It was as if the danger never existed.

It is important to note, that these accessory heads only work well with shaft driven trimmers.
It doesn't take long to to break the cable driven trimmers
I was thinking that myself. A spinning cable wouldn't have a high-enough torque limit to run a blade that heavy.
@@deusexaethera varies on what you use these on. I use a brush attachment on my Echo 2620 and it knocks up to 2 to 5 inch depending on wood type and sapplings. I can clear a field in no time with no strain on the cable. Now something like what he has is too heavy not to mention cuts to slow.
I have the carbide tooth version of this, which I run on my trimmer. Such a great tool for clearing brush. Where I am in Kansas, we are overrun with Honeysuckle and cedar, and this makes quick work of them.
Carbide teeth can break off.

With this much grass, I'd use the tri-blade thing and mow the grass first. It will mow trees up to about finger size and even when it's not sharp anymore, a wire isn't sharp either, it will still destroy grass. Afterwards take the saw blade out (I have the Stihl version) or in the woods with less/no grass take the saw immediatly.

I have one of these blade on my Efco vintage string trimmer with the same handle set up and harness and its awesome! I literally have made 1 mile of trails with it, its nice to use it to cut the original trail and have room to come back with the chainsaw and grab the bigger stuff! I love it! Its been instrumental for forest management on our homestead! Thanks for sharing your take on it!
Doesn’t seem that expensive when you consider the time and effort it saved you. If you threw it away, it still seems worth it for that one job.
Yep, my thoughts exactly. I always buy bigger than what "can" get the job done.
ONE as you said time. I can do the job faster and therefore move on to the next project even if that's a lawn chair and a beer.
TWO it makes the job easier which means I can do more before I'm exhausted.
THREE larger motors don't work as hard therefore last longer.
I cleared overgrown properties for 15 years, a crosscut sawblade with carbide teeth meant for plywood and such was an excellent tool when combined with a trimmer. You could edge, clear land, and even grind the left behind stumps. The blades would last an average of 100 hours of use each.

I've seen chainsaw type cutting blades for angle grinders, used by carpenters while building frame walls and cabins out of logs. They worked out big grooves and tenons in no time and flattened logs easy and fast.
Never have seen one for a weed cutter, but this makes perfect sense.
Those grinder ones are sketchy af due to the way they're put together. They use an actual section of chain instead of attaching the teeth right to the blade like this one.
When the chain breaks off it can cause severe injury or death because they're not very secure
The grinder ones are an easy way to kill youself or lose a hand.

I’ve used these for years clearing out lanes for hunting white tail. Absolutely love them. Wouldn’t really attack anything over 3” in diameter

Been using these for years, love them. Ours is a "Beaver Blade" long since out of production but going strong 20 years later. Use it for the pine wood trimming as well. Mostly sweet gum in our parts.

I been using that blade for about a year my experience is exactly the same. I have cleared brush & multi floral rose bushes which are very difficult to cut up ,when they are fully grown multi floral roses are painful to get close enough to cut the base & then cut them up that blade has made the task easier.Thanks for all you do God Bless you and your family

A 10” carbide tipped saw blade on a good powerful weed eater is one of my favorite forestry tools. It will really zip through all of the small saplings. East Coast!! /throws gang signs/
The kerf is easily half of the chainsaw blade version he is using which makes it work a LOT better. Less strain on that small motor too.

Those are designed only for a perfect vertical cut so you might want to stop using that. While you've gotten by so far, it's a ticking time bomb just waiting to shatter. There not designed at all for any kind of side to side force
I would like to recommend a tip I started using: Mount BOTH the blade and the string head. Basically using the string head as the nut to secure the blade.
This gives several pros
1) You don't run the blade into the ground and rocks as easy, since the head will keep the ground clearance.
2) You have both the blade and string at the ready. If you are in mostly grass, you bump the head to get string and when you get to more rough stuff, you don't bump and the string will wear down to the blade size and the blade takes over. On my trimmer the string is 400 mm (15.5 in) and the blade is only 230 mm. (9 in) so the string is much more efficient on light to medium grass.
3) The blade acts as a disc that prevents long grass spinning with the string head and build on the axel. (that why I tried doing this). I use the Stihl blade with 8 small teeths.
4) If there is a small tree in the grass that normally would kill the string, the blade snaps it in the first swipe. Saving time and string.
Probably not endorsed by any machine manufacturer, but it works great. Just make sure your setup has enough thread sticking out, so the head is secure.

I know this is an old post, however thought I may add here that I frequently use a circular saw blade on my straight shaft trimmer - I find it works great. Even cut through small trees.

I've not seen one of those over here, but we have what is basically a 10" tablesaw blade that goes on the trimmer, carbide tip. They are throw-a-way, once they get dull, but they cost only about $10.

Same here in Australia, a normal table or circular saw blade works fine. Only thing you need to be aware of is the need to check the speed rating of the blade against the opperational RPM of your trimmer.
great review on the blade, don't forget to use that cup like piece on the underside of the blade, it stops the nut and thread from getting damaged and the blade from hitting the ground.
I bought my forestry blade earlier this summer and was amazed how well it worked ! I ordered two more as spares and never needed to craw around on my knees w/ my chain saw!

I use and love the renegade blades. I think I use the 64 tooth version. Maybe 54 tooth, I don't remember off hand. But works great. -- The trick with these blades are that you need high rotation and go at the material with a strong swing.

Thank you for this video! I have about an acre to clear that has tons of small and medium size saplings (no grass) and I’ve been looking for a blade that’ll do the job. No other video on YT shows land like this being cleared in this manner. All other videos just show cutting through the thickest piece of wood or tree, which isn’t what I need. I have a chainsaw for that.

I live in Delaware, and it's had a weather identity crisis since I've been alive. It's been down to the 40s and up to the high 70s.
Phoenix hit 99 degrees on November 5th.
Not sure I have ever had the need to take the guard off, they have a cutter to get the string length correct. What a beast of a blade.
The camera views with speed ups and slow mo angles was superb in this video. I appreciate that
I have a Forrester blade exactly like that! I also happened to have an older Makita worm saw that the blade fits perfectly in the guard and the arbor, I use it for cutting pressure treated posts and oak or cedar posts , or any other thick hardwood.
Also works great for cutting mill cut lumber that is still wet and a regular blade wont cut through.
That opening is pretty artsy like it
While watching you put the blade on, I noticed you didn't have a cup under the nut that our FS460 has... the cup spreads the tension out over a wider surface area...

wow what cool tool my in-laws have 5 acres , I do most of the clearing since I'm an arborist . this would be great for all the young whips ( saplings ) thanks !
When i was a teen and that was many moon ago when they came out with the eco weed eater my uncle got tired of the trim line so we put a skill saw blad on one and we cut sapplings and hay fresh for the horeses and it woork great.
I used something similar in the early 80's and it was old then, when I was a groundsman for the Alberta School for the Deaf. Instead of a circular chain cutting surface it had a solid steel blade similar to a skill saw. It worked great on grass and thick and dense weed growth, but the safety factor has to be considered. I guess that's why I didn't see them around after that and never seen them before.

Axes are for cutting off toes and hatchets are for cutting off fingers. I know an old man who told me once that you should never in any circumstance have one of your appendages at the opposite end of a blades direction. I realize he has gloves on. And I say this with all the respect in the world for this real man. Holding a log with one hand and striking a blade right down the line is very dangerous.
A technique i use is to push the wood into the axe blade just enough to hold it, then strike the cutting log, makes a very audible pop sound.

I’ve had a lawn care business for years and worked for one from the time I was 16. Me and everyone I know have always used skill saw blades. You can buy 3 or more for the price of brush blades and will get more cutting for the money. I’ll use it for low hanging branches, clearing underbrush, and have even cut through some smaller trees with it when my chainsaw quit. Also once you remove that guard you’ll throw them in the trash every time you get a new one. You get more grass on you but being able to run the line longer and the weight reduction is more than worth it
How does that affect the slinging of rocks, pebbles, and etc?
I've got the fs 91 r and use it to weed-eat my neighbor's, two others he hooked me up with, and my parents. I love it and it blows the troy bilt I had before out of the water.
My younger brother is also learning on it, so would it be smart to take it off with him still somewhat inexperienced?
I had a mowing business in the early 90’s, & had a chain on a disc back then. Was awesome.

Check out the Stihl version of the forester blade. I’ve used both chainsaw tooth type blades, and the Stihl blade works far superior! It cuts VERY aggressively, has less mass so it spins up faster and doesn’t bog down, and has a wider curf, which is ideal for this type of cutting. I actually use it to trim encroaching branches back on trails. It’s harder to find the Stihl blades, though.
I've used the Sthil version kit for a couple years and it's like a chainsaw weed eater. I've cut young 4" diameter pine trees down, pruned trees, trimmed limbs and bushes with it so far so good.
Can the Stihl be used on a Husky?
Hi Cody, good honest review. I would definitely consider some lower leg protection. Debris is going to come off that blade a a fair rate.
He wear some sort of copper pants made for chainsaw work so maybe thats enough for him, he seems like the sort of guy to wear long thick wool socks so I’m sure he’ll be fine with the socks and chainsaw pants

We have "weedwhackers" here in Finland that come with a circular saw like that and are meant for cutting down trees up to 3ish inches. If you approach the tree from the wrong side, you can get quite a kick out of them :) but they are beasts for their job when used correctly.

As technician with over 25 years experience in this type of equipment never remove the guard it's there to protect in you and others from flinging debris and with string Line over loading the clutch and gearbox leading to early failure

I run clearing saws and we got a message from our overlords saying other operators in the region have been working with their guards off. I can't imagine how stupid you would have to be to take the guard off a saw that cuts through a 5 inch hardwood in two seconds. I guess they don't like having feet.

Stihl has a commercial blade for their clearing saw. It’s expensive but man does it work.
homelite use to make one for the straight shaft ones back in the day, i had one and loved it for clearing unknown land. ran into a fence and cut down 4x4 fence posts by going around the base. you want a straight shaft one too cause curved shaft has that flex line in it.
I've had one for over 10yrs, same one, use it all the time.
I have used a variety of these different blades ,, they are NOT for weed trimmers,, they are for brush cutters ,, usually built a little stronger...some work better than others...most I have used are carbide tipped.....just need to stay off rocks and away from steel posts etc....
Made for ditch type shrubs and brush , milkweed, sunflower stalks, etc. and up to about 1" new growth trees .... also not enough for trees and/or de-limbing above your head... obvious safety issues...used correctly ,,leave the guards on...

My dad always had a small fire going in the fire pit in the backyard every time he worked outside. I will do the same just to have that smell of wood smoke in the air while I'm working out in the garden or mowing grass or whatever needs to be done outside, I love it. Then I usually cook over the coals in the evening😋
As a qualified arborist, don't remove the guard, especially when using a brush cutting attachment.
Risk assessment alone tells you that the danger that it'll bounce off something and with a saw blade on it potentially chop you.
Agreed. I can understand the attraction but honestly this thing looks like a big problem. If you need the power of a chain saw then use a proper chain saw. And do wear proper pants and a helmet.
I can't imagine how the guard would help with that tool honestly. For it to "chop you" it would have to spin around toward you or kick back around 180*. So basically by the time it got around to you, the guard would be on the wrong side anyway.

In industry we are taught that the corners of the bar are the highest risk of kick back.
That thing is all corner....
Kick back happens directly backwards from the point of catching and could propel the blade directly back at his legs.
The guard could prevent serious damage to your shins.
@@paulrichardspencer Think about where he is holding the device... Physics doesn't suddenly turn off when using a chainsaw.
If the saw caught and pushed it straight back, the force would angle downward, as it's intended to by the design of the handles, and the blade would safely hit into the ground.
For the blade to go straight back and cause damage in an area that would be covered by the guard, he would literally have both shoulders dislocated, or his arms ripped off .
Furthermore, no, it's not a corner. Chainsaws catch on their ends because it goes around a TIGHT bend around the end of the narrow bar with a quick transition to a straight line. This blade is 9" in diameter, with NO transition. There is no corners. Circles don't have corners.
Furthermore, when he is cutting, you can see he is using the left side of the blade which is spinning toward him, so if it did catch, it would pull the saw safely AWAY from him.
The guard is for preventing little bits of grass and whatnot from getting on your clothes. That's it.

Husqvarna has the scarlet saw blades which are brushcutter blades; however, as long as the arbor size matches your straight shaft trimmer it will work. I have one installed on a 129l Husky trimmer and it works wonders.
I used something similar working for an old man outside of Canby around freshman year. It was hard but meditative work clearing the brush from a long stretch of fence and blasting music through some headphones. Fond memories made fonder considering the end of a hard work day was often signaled by a glass of ice water and a kiss from his granddaughter. :)
You forgot to put the shield that goes under the blade it keeps the debris out of the gear head. It is a wise idea to use the rider cup it protects the nut that holds the blade on. I’ve used the brush knife I have the Stihl saw blade it works okay. It doesn’t matter what you use there’s always hidden rocks you inevitably whack with the blade.
Agree with this comment. I have the Stihl circular saw blade. It works well. This one looks a little more beefy for a similar price. You should be using the shield plate, then saw blade, then convex washer then the rider cup, then the nut.
It does seem like a excellent blade but the sound of that motor is underpowered for sure, maybe it would be optimized for the commercial strimmer. Good video

Don't use bladed "weed whackers" in flipflops - steel toes are handy... (Sometimes insufficient)
@@geesss8675 lol while you are correct it could've happened to anyone of us. The guy it happened to is a hard and safe worker. And it ate through his boot behind the steel toes actually. So when I say it took off some toes it really took off some foot.

all I have to saw is BS. - How do you get close enough to the blade to get hurt? ----- Answer is,,,, You don't -----It's impossible unless you have arms that are six feet long.
This is pretty ingenious because the disk can be just whatever junk steel, and the cutting chains can be as high quality as possible. Pretty neat

Mine at work starts first pull every time. I work mowing and weed whipping cemeteries.
When I first saw this I thought it was meant for a angle grinder. I was glad to see it wasn’t. They do make these for angle grinders. Those have to be the most dangerous tool ever concocted. If you see one of these cutting tools design for angle grinders think long and hard about it.
I work for Texas Parks and Wildlife as a State Park Ranger and we use and love that brush trimmer. Great piece of equipment.
