    Fasting has many health benefits but could it also be used as the ultimate diet tool?
    A monk fast is a 36 hour fast once, a week with the purpose of enhancing your spiritual practice.
    Having fasted plenty of times in the past I'm sure it can't be that hard?

    I am a female bodybuilder and I've been doing weekly 36 hour fast for the last year. You did make a few mistakes which was probably why you had such a hard time and you got sick afterwards. 1, you want to have a lean protein as your last meal before your fast. 2, you need to drink extra water, and make sure that you have a good intake of minerals, specifically, sodium, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Sodium is very important and taking a full glass of water and a half a teaspoon of pink Himalayan sea salt will help you get through the rough times. 3, break your fast with bone broth and make sure you do not have any salt or garlic. Added to it. Then 30 to 60 minutes later I have a lean protein, avoid salt or garlic for this meal as well. After you digest this, you can go back to eating as normal.

    I have done at least 27 of these fasts. They do work best with water only, especially for a beginner. I always supplement Potassium, Magnesium and Himalayan pink salt. Drink lots of water. When your fast is done have a small meal only, I like 2 eggs with toast. If you eat too much too soon you will feel like crap. And something nobody mentions, on the day after a fast, do not trust a fart.

    Thanks for the video. I have been fasting for a couple of years now. My current routine is 38 hour fast Sunday night to Tuesday lunchtime, then a 24 hour fast from Tuesday at 6pm until Wednesday at 6pm and then and 18 hour fast from 7pm Wednesday until Thursday at 1pm. Then no restriction from Thursday lunchtime until Sunday evening. I have lost weight and improved my diabetes but the biggest improvement has been to my memory.

    I would stick to only water during the fast. I don’t do caffeine, I don’t do tea or any other zero calorie beverages, even if technically they don’t break your fast. The biggest NO though is breaking your fast with a smoothie. As healthy, as it is, you don’t want to overload your body with sugar first thing. Start with a smaller meal, mostly proteins and fats. In general, you should never start your morning with a smoothie like that. It sends your blood sugar on a roller coaster ride the rest of the day. Have it for lunch instead.

    I'm 63, 🙄 and I've been doing this twice per week (Monday and Thursday) since the 8th of January 2013. 😮 I find that 1.5 pints of room temperature ordinary tap water in the morning, and 2 pints in afternoon/evening is more than enough to keep me full.

  • @giuseppeferrara952
    @giuseppeferrara952 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Selection bias is common nowadays, but really a lot of times, we don't know what the cause-and-effect was. You mentioned a bad experience with the 36-hour monk fast, but who knows? It could have been the caffeine beverages, your routine was off (sleep cycle, trying to perform a higher intensity workout), being bored, or starting the fast being leaner than usual (by means, having less body fat for energy reserves to keep you lasting through the fast), just to name a few.
    Sometimes it's worth it to experiment with a fasting protocol multiple times to decide if it could be incorporated in our diet plan. I wouldn't have been surprised if 36-hour fasts were common among our ancestors, who experienced recurring patterns of shortages and abundances of food supply.
    I'd guess that the 36-hour fast is more likely to work for people who are not as active and/or have higher BF%. For the average person who is sedentary, I'd say it could be worth it for them after they take the time to learn to identify their true hunger (I say this because most people claim to be hungry when they are actually just bored, emotional, or just having a craving). By means, most people can go longer without food than they realize. But for super active and really lean athletes like myself, I'd say mostly no. If anything, as a martial artist, runner, and biker who trains for hours a day, I would dread to even fathom how I'd feel if I performed such a prolonged fast. To make matters worse, I think that now is my worst time to try such an akin fast since I'm currently at my leanest at 8-9% BF (bear in mind I'm 128 pounds at 5'8" now), and thus hunger levels are higher compared to previous years.
    But then, I can only speak for myself, and not for anyone else specifically. Everyone is different, but should experiment with different methods to see what and what does not work.

    • @PeteOnPurpose
      @PeteOnPurpose  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great insights, fasting is definitely not for everyone but as you say could help a lot of people especially identify hunger/cravings etc. I will continue to experiment with fasting as I do feel benefits when I fast, just not so much this time. 😂
