Don't get me wrong, I love my Studio Display but these are similar in price only on paper, not in the real world. The Studio Display is € 2200 in Germany with the height adjustable stand and close to € 2500 if you add the matte finish. The S9 5K is around € 1350-1450, depending on the shop. And at the end of the day with the Studio Display you're still missing 90 degree rotation for programmers...

In your video, I heard you mention the S9 monitor having HDR support, but you zipped past Apple not having it. Then on 8:46 you said, "Apple does do a much better job on High Dynamic Range", which implies the Studio Monitor has HDR support (which it does not). Also, you sort of skimmed through the price difference between the two monitors. Your Studio Display costs more than the S9, because you purchased the optional up/down mount - but you show both costing $1600.

Note: the much better choice for the Studio Display is a 3rd party VESA mount arm. I have the $100 Amazon Basics (which is a licensed Ergotron) and it's fantastic.
It gives the Studio Display rotation capability and unveils a hidden feature: The monitor will automatically and instantly recognize that it has been rotated and rotate the video data.
It ALSO will rotate the webcam picture.
Also I'd mention the microphones. They're fantastic and let you have video meetings without headsets and echos. The integration in iOS is just unmatched.

The Studio Display is pure elegance. The build in power adapter, which seems not so easy to copy looking at Samsungs gigantic external adapter. The sleek design with powerful build in speakers and a passable webcam. The premiere hight adjustable stand which is an engineering marvel. The perfectly symmetric bezels. The overall build quality. This package is not easily copied.

The Apple height-adjustable stand option is $500 dollars more, while that feature is already included in the Samsung monitor. So, it is not true Samsung is selling it for the same price. @@bradleymarlow9311 yeah yeah, that's why I see books/stands under monitors that don't support height adjustment while walking around the office, not to mention electric tables while somewhat close but still a bit different in sitting heights and in standing heights, same with chairs. Some people occasionally adjust the height of the monitor while standing. A lot of people ignore ergonomics until "surprises" happen later on. My point is Apple could have had height adjustment in the base model and let customers have an option to adjust the height by not paying for it, but hey, why do that if you _can_ charge extra :)

I recently bought the Studio Display and it's a work of art. It's truly beautiful and the best-looking monitor I've ever seen. And of course the compatibility with the Macbook is astonishing. The downsides, no HDR and the camera. For those reasons I think it's an overpriced monitor. The height adjustment is also overpriced but I don't mind using a monitor desk shelf on top of my desk. I actually like it. Image is amazing, speakers are VERY impressive. On my main PC I have studio monitors and studio headsets. The studio display does not come close to those, obviously. But it's so good if you don't want to be to meticulous about analyzing the sound, that I don't feel the need to get extra speakers at all when I'm using the display.

The big reason I could see going with S9 is needing to support multiple inputs. I’ve had my Studio Display for over a year with my M1 Max Mac Studio but after moving I only have room for one desk setup so I have to share space with my work from home setup which is already multiple monitors (but a govt HP laptop) I don’t want to move cables around as that’s janky and will wear things out quickly. I’m a total Apple sheep but I might sell the Studio Display and get the S9 to better suit my setup.
Also, the S9 will get discounted more frequently and much more heavily than Apple to where I won’t end up paying $1600 when I pull the trigger.

iMac 5K 2020 started from $1799, and it was a full-blown computer with decent AMD graphics, the latest mid-range Intel processor (which costed at least $200 on its own), keyboard and mouse and stuff.
Studio Display just cannot cost this much. Maybe if it gets upgraded with mini-LED and 120 Hz, then it will be worth $1599. But not in its current state.

@@intensifiedhipster Sure, I hope by the time I'm ready to buy my next desktop they'll have upgraded it to a liquid retina XDR display, but I really need _at least_ a 5K display as I've been spoiled by the 5K iMac.
No one says you have to buy it so don't get all up in your face about it. Buy a cheapo 4K display and let 'em double scale it for you.
The studio display simply slots in and replaces the missing parts of the iMac 5K.

I have the Apple Studio display and like a lot of people out of necessity I have it placed much nearer a rear wall than you had there. The Apple display can sound too bass heavy if placed within a couple of feet of a rear wall, depending of course on your listening preferences. I think the Samsung would still sound weak near a wall but there would probably be some beneficial bass reinforcement.

I think it's kinda disappointing we're still having this conversation now (and that monitors of this calibre are still at the $1500 price point)
I've had a Studio display since the middle of 2022. It's great and works well with my Mac Studio but in all honesty, it's not a big improvement over the original 5K retina display in the late 2014 iMacs.
That said, it just works: seamless brighness and volume adjustments (and nightshift/truetone) and the in-built camera is good enough for my needs and it has been faultless to date.
The speakers are sufficient for most purposes and I've found myself using them more in lieu of the Sonos Play 1's in my main study area. Definitely better than the old and new iMac speakers by a country mile.
But if I also had a non-Apple device to connect, then the sheer lack of physical buttons and configuration in the Studio display feels like it would be a poor (and potentially impossible) option.

I appreciate this review, but there's one angle that just doesn't check out for me. As of this comment in mid-October, the ViewFinity is $1299 on Amazon, and the Apple Studio Display with the height and tilt adjustable stand is $1999, as you indicated at the beginning of your review.
Given those prices, the question becomes, if you value the height adjustable stand, is the ASD worth an extra $700? If you do not care about that fancy Apple stand, is the ASD worth an extra $300? I'm not sure I'm any closer to an answer.

I have S9 and the only reason I have acquired it over Studio Display is much better compatibility with Windows. I can confirm, speakers are average, camera as well, on top, if you use BENQ LED light on top of monitor then forget S9 camera or LED, not compatible (you can put it on side as workaround). Another small issue is that sometimes does not reconnect picture when re-connect to CalDigit4 dock (M2ProMax), remote ctrl switch helps. On the other hand, I am happy user because it is what I have expected, as long as Windows is the gaming platform and S9 works with it great, you can switch between them easily, Windows supports like Mac HiDPI resolution, you can control monitor and everything from remote if needed. If you have like me external studio speakers, I could recommend it as Mac/Win setup. I liked BENQ Pro 32" monitor more (KVM, dial), but they do not offer 5K/6K, alternative might be new Dell 32"6K, but camera there is also bulky in the middle (see LED lamp issue).

Yes, that’s half the price of the equivalent ‘height & tilt adjustable Apple Studio Display with nano glass’. The Apple display is going to be flawless, but you pay a premium for that. The Samsung S9 is a great alternative for those who use windows and mac, and the £1000 saving could buy you a HomePod and a 4k webcam for a few hundred and still save a ton. I just ordered an S9 for £1189, and while I’ll probably use the built in speakers and camera, I already have Apple HomePods for audio and a Dell 4k webcam that gives insane quality, so I’m not fussed about the S9 speakers being so-so.

Thank you for your evaluations of the S9 versus the Studio Display. I’ve been planning a major computer upgrade since last fall. When the S9 was announced (nine months ago), I was excited, because it sounded as if Samsung had come out with a Studio Display killer. And there was all the speculation I saw that Samsung would sock it to Apple by pricing the S9 far below the SD, making it a no-brainer. Well, we see now how valid those predictions were. Not! I had thought early on of going with the S9 for cost, even though I’ve heard so much good about the SD. I’m close to ordering a Mac Studio but will probably go with the SD over the S9. I think that, from a price perspective, Samsung got greedy and has shot themselves in the foot, letting a good opportunity to get the S9 out the door slip away. Samsung’s decision to price the S9 so close to the SD leaves me thinking that I might as well just go ahead and get the SD and be done with it.

I have recording studio speakers, so I don't care about the sound quality of the S9. And the height/tilt etc. are "set it and forget it", so that's not really an issue. I would prefer a higher quality version of the S9 without the "smart" features, for a lower price, though. I hope 2880p monitors catch on. Windows at 200% scaling would be great on one of those.

On the Studio Display, if I change my recommended resolution to make my fonts/icons bigger will I lose my 5K resolution and if so how can I make everything bigger so not to strain my eyes? Also True Tone will it affect my image editing color accuracy?

    • @martinhoffmann9269
      @martinhoffmann9269 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am not an expert on how scaling works on the Mac, but I believe the off-screen buffer is always 5K when using a Studio Display. I have the Studio Display, and the default scaling makes everything the same size as on my 2013 27” non-retina iMac (2.5K). Everything looks sharper and less pixelated on the Studio Display, even though text, icons, etc. look the same size. I have played with the scale settings, and Studio Display always produces a high-quality result (to my eyes anyway). I do tend to keep it set to the default scaling, because it gives me a good amount of screen real estate with decent sized graphics.
As for True Tone, having it switched on can definitely affects color accuracy during editing. If color accuracy is really important, you will probably want to work with True Tone switched off and try to control the lighting in your work environment. Again, I am not an expert. I do some image editing, not professionally, and I keep True Tone switched off.
