Which display would YOU rather keep? Comment below! Buy the Samsung Smart Monitor M8 here ➡ howl.me/ckF5auLROYW Apple 27" Studio Display ➡ geni.us/GeA3te6
I would keep the studio display-although i the Samsung one is very close!.It’s a hard decision for sure-however I just feel like the build quality of apples display and the sound are big factors that makes me feel the studio display overall is better for me!.
I always would go for the larger screen. I know Apple is a great display, but for my personal use I do not need anything more than 60Hz as I do not game on my computers. I would like the M8 had a bit more brightness. Speakers are adequate for a TV but on my MacBook I will always either use the MacBook speakers or headphones. Now, the biggest driver for the M8 is the price and it totally wins. The display should be IPS for sure, VA... is good for gaming when you sit in front of it.
Comparing 400 nits vs 600 nits display is like tesla model x vs your pajamas....another level of meaninglessness as not even same level of qualities.....
I think the two displays are going after different markets. The pixel density on the Samsung monitor will not convert anyone who wants a very sharp display regardless of its price. That is the Studio’s main selling point (5K, 218 PPI). Those who like having a bigger screen and don’t care about pixel density will be happy with the Samsung. I don’t think anyone who would buy a Samsung would really buy the Apple monitor and vice versa. They are just different animals and really aren’t comparable. For me, I ended up finally giving in and getting a Studio Display because I have bad eyes after undergoing retina and cataract surgery. I need that sharpness, which my other monitors can’t match (I also have an LG 38” ultrawide and Samsung Odyssey G9 with about half the pixel density). If I need to read text, I’ll move whatever app I need to the Studio Display. The Samsung TV features are cool, but I’d rather have my actual Samsung 65” TV.
I really tried to buy the Samsung to use with a Studio. When I went into Best Buy to buy it they had an open box Studio Display and I bought both planning on probably returning the Apple. When I had them both up and I was comparing them my wife walked in and asked what was wrong with the Samsung. No amount of tweaking could make it look anywhere close to the Apple so I ended up spending far more than I wanted to by returning the Samsung. It's just a color and PPI thing but the Apple looked $800 better to me and I knew I'd regret it if I kept the Samsung.
its all about the image quality, the text crispness......NOTHING comes close to it,. I dont care if you can buy x4 Samsungs instead of a studio display. Im choosing the studio display every time
But if you showed her the price tags she would have said "whats wrong with apple". I just paid $360 for this samsung TV and it came with a 2TB portable SSD that goes for $160, for free.
I thought for a moment that the Studio Display's mics were not coming from that recorded clip, I thought it was commentary added in during editing. Those microphones are super clear and crisp.
I don't understand comparing a 4k 32" VA monitor with a 5k 28" IPS monitor - they are really different screens. Might as well compare the Apple studio display against a 24" 240Hz VA gaming monitor. The studio display is for people that want a lot of quality: more pixels, more color, more nits - premium everything. The LG Ultrafine is mentioned multiple times here - and that is because it is a much closer monitor for the reasons someone would buy the Apple Studio Display.
What I don’t understand is why it is so difficult for all companies to make simple looking, elegant monitors like this? LG for instance and their weird claw like stand and thick bottom bezels? The aluminium iMac has been around for nearly 15 years, yet other companies still struggle to make simple, elegant looking monitors?
I mean dell has been making some amazing products soo... In any case this isn't even perfect, I'd expect them to put the power brick in the monitor , the external power brick is clunky
I think it is very important that I point out that Samsung announced this display way before apple released the studio display. So those who are thinking its a cheap mac studio clone.... think twice
@@jackyharuhiko Exactly! And the ultra thin Intel iMac 5K was released more than a decade ago with ton of average copycat monitors following. But I gotta admit, this is the closest copy I’ve ever seen, at least from the outside, good job this time Sammy, just don’t turn up the volume, lol!
@@shouryaaswal5681 Samsung has the best screens and monitors. No doubt. Apple destroys Samsung in computers and anything to do with chips and software.
STOP THIS IS SPONSORED!! What have you done Max! I bought this monitor because of you. But it is rubbish. Putting side by side these two monitors just a misdirection. You didn't mention how bad that panel is. This is not a competitor. If i move my head only a few centimeters form the monitor the colors i see changes dramaticly. It is not about calibrating the monitor, it is about the quality of VA panel. It is good for surfing internet and watching movies (even for the movie you have to sit towards the monitor. If someone watching with you , with only small amount of change in angle, colors are washed out ). That is all. This is an entry level quality and i spent 730 dollars for this rubbish. And i can not turn it back because i used it for a day (They don't take it back here and dollar is very expensive also). I think Samsung sponsored for two of your M8 videos. This is why you only tell about bright side. I am really sad about this misdirection. I have no option to turn it back and no budget to buy a new monitor. IF YOU WANT THIS MONITOR FOR PHOTO OR VIDEO EDITING PLEASE DON'T BUY. DON'T DO THE MISTAKE I DID!!
Are you okay? How is this video sponsored. If you made the decision on buying something yourself, how would it be Max Tech’s fault. I think you are the type of customer who buys a car, then wants to return it for a refund after driving it for 1 weeks. 😂
I tried to set one up when it was delivered yesterday. I don't need a 'smart' monitor. You have to update it with software updates. It uses AirPlay to communicate with the Mac. No Displayport. It comes with HDMI to mini-HDMI cable... how many Macs have that? Wireless? Isn't your Mac already wireless? Why do you also need a wireless monitor? No manuals in the box. I contacted Samsung Product Support and chatted the technician for a link to download the manuals. The Product Support Technician said I would have to contact a Technical Support Technician for that technical kind of information. If you buy this monitor you have to join the Samsung Ecosphere. And the display is full of bloatware such as Bixby and steaming subscriptions and game trials, etc., etc., etc. Samsung must be making a fortune from all the $$$ they're paid to promote the bloatware.
I would be stay clear from this display for anyone using MacOS, it's display ppi falls under the inefficient zone. So if your Mac has to scale the UI (because 4k content on a 32" screen will appear too small) your Mac will not linearly scale your resolution. So you'll end up using significant gpu power and will drastically lower the performance of your Mac. That's the reason for the 5k res on the apple display, it's to fall under the correct ppi zone.
Well, before 9:37, I literally thought Samsung M8, with such a clean look and thoughtful designs, was a much better deal compared to the Apple Studio Display. But then, when they are both turned on and placed side by side, the gap is apparently quite huge. I got to say M8 is an excellent product with an appealing price as long as it is not placed by the side of the Apple Studio Display while turned on.
The difference on the close up is so obviously clearer on the Apple display - not sure how anyone can look past this. It's partly because it's 4K and the Apple is 5K and so this is a stupid comparison
I had the M8 for about three months and will be returning it. The Apple Samsung integration and the experience isn't as seamless as I'd prefer. Will invest in a Studio Display now.
I would love to see a review of the Dell Ultrasharp U2723QE/U3223QE as a alternative for the Studio Display. I think these are a closer equivalent and more targeted for users with small studios. Plus they have the new IPS Black tech which seems interesting.
I think I would like these better. I personally use a dell ultrasharp and I much prefer the features. Having better color accuracy and built in kvm is better than the added tv functions/streaming in my opinion.
@@zayneytem no worries its monitor names. lol Dell usually goes first letter is series so U is from their ultrasharp line, 32/27 is diagnal screen size 23 is date released so (2022) Think of like car names. q is resolution which i think is 4k. Any other letter after that usually is a special feature it may have. E i believe means it has an ethernet rj45 port.
Easy: Apple Studio Display all day long. A glossy screen will always produce richer, deeper colors and blacks. But, yeah, the price on the Samsung is damn appealing.
@@aa15032261 You'd have to pay a couple hundred dollars to get that sort of sound with external speakers, so add that on to any other panel. Plus then you have wires and speakers taking up desk space. Definitely worth it to get the Studio Display.
@@77dris not even close, you can pay less than a 1000 for an overall better display on multiple accounts from anyone else and then you still have 100 dollars for a webcam and 600 dollars for much better speakers
Tried Samsung M7, then M8 and compared to Studio Display at home. After returning both Samsung screens, I still bought and kept the Studio Display. 😅 Nice screen but the build quality is flimsy.
update after two weeks; I'm glad I kept the Studio Display, I love that 5k sharpness and the 60hz are almost unnoticeable due to the smoothness of the MacOs. Apple has also updated the camera and it now looks much better. 💪🏼
@@joelvanmil1597 I’m curious, what are the main things you use your display for? I’ve been looking into all 3 of these monitors trying to decide which one is the best for me. I use my current monitor to edit photos, watch videos, code and game.
@@priscillayg Video/Photo editing. Perfect screen, don't take the Nano glass texture, the coating is amazing even in a very lid room. :) It's the same display as the LG ultrafine 5k 27" but 100 nits brighter and a glass screen. Till now, def. worth the money.
$900 cheaper for 32" screen with TV and Mac/Windows laptop connection, Netflix, Prime, Apple TV functionality, incredible Wow, what a fantastic product for a student!
I love the idea of the modular webcam (especially the cover, although it really should be permanently attached), but Samsung should really consider putting those features in a higher quality display.
It absolutely shouldn't be attached. Many users, much like myself never use Webcam under 4k quality. So we'd have to tape over it anyway, for privacy reasons if it were built in.
That Samsung display looks so nice! Recently upgraded to the $1000CAD Asus ROG 27” 4K display (forget the name) and loving it so far. Really appreciate the higher resolution, even more adjustable stand that can twist, and gorgeous HDR. I am curious how 4K would look on a 32” display versus 27” though.
Great review of the M8. I received mine yesterday and already returned it to Samsung. Display quality (image) was terrible esp the uneven backlighting on the left and right sides. The blacks were a muddy gray and the text wasn't very sharp. I think u were very kind in your review because the real results were not good imo.
@@The_MEMEphis Doubtful? Obviously, I'm a Mac user so Mac OS performance is ultimately what matters. Also, do people not use their computers for serious work? Reading small text is a pretty standard part of a lot of professional work. I'm a computer programmer and code is lots of lines of small text. Scaled 1080p at 28" is ludicrously oversized, so I more or less need to use scaled 1440p. It looks way worse in 4K than in 5K. It's not even close.
im using a dual 2010 monitor..its 24 inch and 1ms response time oh and also 1080p but i think ill switch for this 699$ monitor much cheaper and upgrade to 4k
Meh. I’ll pass. Once you get used to 218 ppi it’s hard to go back. That said, this looks like it could have real value as a monitor to connect to my PS5, although I’m not crazy about the mini-HDMI input.
I wish monitor reviews would cover their electromagnetic interference. I've got a much older Samsung monitor I'm using as a second monitor with an iMac and it spews a lot of EMI in the 144 MHz and 220 MHz ham bands, to the point that I have to turn it off when I want to use SDR software on the iMac to listen to things in those bands. The iMac and an older Dell monitor are clean.
I’ve only ever managed to sell 2 monitors, and original LG 34” IPS ultra wide calibrated for 99.99% accuracy, with my old Mac Pro 2013, and then a Gsync 27” 144hz. Everything else depreciated into old junk. I still have some stored around since 2009. Never has an issue selling off my old Apple stuff alright.
I do think it's funny that they talk about how bulky the power supply is on the Samsung, but it's also thinner. But when apple does it on the iMac, it's okay because it's thinner🤦♂️
Because it doesn’t make that much of a difference tbh. You can find 4K monitors that trounce the studio in literally every respect and even match pixel density if you’re willing to shrink slightly.
I have both on order- thanks for the review. Bestbuy had an intro offer for $100 store credit so for $599 net it is an easy decision to keep and use somewhere with a MBP but I think the Apple Studio display will end up being my goto Monitor
The only way these monitors are comparable is the fact that the stands look the same. It is so misleading to compare these displays like this. Somebody who needs a studio display should not even consider the M8. Somebody who would be happy with an M8 should not even consider the studio. They're totally different demographics.
I will definitely go with the M8. You can save $900 and get an M1 Macbook Air (or even M2) paired with it. And Samsung M8 comes with a free adjustable stand as opposed to Apple's $400 iStand. What a ripoff! 😆
Just bought the m8 for $521 during the prime day sale. It's such a good monitor with many features at this price point. Imo, the thin bezel makes it look better than the apple studio.
The studio display is better in every way other than bezels and price. I don’t get why they made the bezels so large. The bezel on the iPad Pro, which uses the same center stage camera, is way thinner than the studio display.
I have a Mac with a 4K display and another Mac with a 5K display. If you know what you are doing, they both can be set to scale perfectly. I’m guessing you don’t know what you are doing.
There is nothing better in the world than being valued so greatly and being able to still choose the direction that's best suited for you. That's outstanding and all the respect from me for making that decision. Life is much much more than a paycheck, good for you sir!
I have the 43" M7 running through my original HomePods thanks to the Apple TV audio passthrough… no webcam but adding one wouldn’t be that bad money-wise… I’m VERY happy with my purchase… all I wish it had is PBP or at least PIP
5:16 If Apple did that, they would probably have the camera placed on an aluminium sliding support which would pop up whenever you click on the camera app (or touch some particular point on the screen sides) and the rest of time would remain tucked in the display and hidden from view.
I think the M8 is much better value than the Studio Display, but personally I would've preferred they skip the smart TV features to focus on better sound and less vignetting. Another company producing something like that at this price would seriously embarrass Apple. Can't really justify paying for features I won't use when it's missing a few tweaks I'd get a lot out of. That said, they may well release something like that next, seeing how many people have bought this product primarily as an external monitor. My interest was piqued by the adjustable height, the lack of overt branding on the front, and the larger size, so there's not much else on the market at this price point that I'd even consider. Good effort, Samsung! ETA: Just seen this is currently £594 with a student discount. That changes everything.
You should drop the apple hate and just present the differences between the products. This pretty much cemented how much better the apple display is in every category which as a professional is very important. If I’m just a regular joe and don’t care about quality in every category then I’d buy the crappy monitor made out of cheap plastic with crappy speakers and horrible mic and webcam, then it’s a great product.
Same here - they must realise that most peoples laptops and accessories are black... and also the experience of watching a movie with the white band at the bottom will be distracting
I still cannot believe Apple missed such an easy opportunity to create a display with all the built in apps and streaming features that this Samsung has. I mean, it has all the hardware! Sometimes I wonder what the hell they are thinking…
I feel like that would affect Apple TV’s sales. They are trying to make as much money as possible. The same way they brought M1 into iPads, they could have easily added MacOS support to iPads but they didn’t. They are kinda against the idea of 2 in 1 products, which makes sense if you are trying to maximize your profit.
@@alirava9865 That could be the thinking, but it is going to backfire on them. Look what really made Apple go from a popular computer and music player company the the worlds biggest tech company - the iPhone. It eventually destroyed the iPod, but the gains were worth the product cannibalism. I feel an Apple TV is a product that is typically connected to a large screen TV, so I don’t think it would affect sales too much in that regard either. The iPads need a major software overhaul as well - I’d like to see something similar in functionality to macOS, but delivered in a way that takes full advantage of the iPad and its touch display.
@@keesswier212 Haha, Apple used to think different. Now, they think profit. Need to balance the two out. Some of their stuff is spectacular. Some of it is not. It’s not like everything Apple creates is a masterpiece, some of it really sucks, or is hobbled by some strange thinking. Looks at their software lately - I’ve had issues with my iPhone, my iPad, and even macOS. My first Mac was a 2010 27” iMac running snow leopard - and it blew the doors off Windows and my PC’s. My Galaxy S21 Ultra runs more stable then my iPhone 13 pro max - although it has issues as well at times. My point is, Apple is a Genius company - at times - but it has had its fair share of duds as well. This monitor is a disappointment for its price tag, and the fact they have seemingly eliminated the 27” iMac from their lineup is a shame. (I still think they will bring it back next year, however.) The Apple product line is getting a little bloated and odd, as well - as it has in the past a few times. It needs a good trimming, and the devices need some major software overhauls and stability fixes.
@@alirava9865 perhaps, I was seriously considering buying their top end iPad Pro with 2TBs of storage until I discovered the limitations of their iPad OS. This tablet, pen and keyboard with Apple care was close to $2800. I no longer will buy one now so they have missed out on this sale along with loosing a customer that has never owned an Apple product and will never buy Apple gowing forward.
Why are you comparing a $900 machine with a $1,700 machine? The M8 is not positioned in any way to compete with the Studio Display. It would be like comparing a Pixel 5a to an iPhone 13 pro. Makes no sense. They are meant for different people. I'd rather have the M8 being compared to something like a U3223QE.
Good point @Victor. I am close to buying the U3223QE or the LG 32BL95U-W 32" LED LCD. The IPS Black technology, nits and ppi are what are important to me.
@@JohnKuehne_SF I actually have the U2723QE. The colours are amazing but there's a lot of light bleed on one of the corners when watching a dark movie.
Innocn 27m2v >>>> samsung m8. 100% dcip3 and adobe rgb. 4k with 160HZ refreshrate and vesa displayHDR 1000 certified with 1152 miniLED backlight zones. All of this at $800. And it drops to around $600 if you go for the 60hz version (innocn 27m2u). A metal enclosure is not worth that much of a premium.
This comparison is kinda hilarious! It's like comparing a Ferrari V8 and a Chevy V8 just because they both can go vrooom vrooom! haha I doubt anyone would get the Samsung if they could afford the Apple. It's not even close in ANY of the comparisons... except for being cheaper.
i personally love the studio display, but you can get 2 M8 TVs basically for the price of 1 studio display. that’s how i look at it. so i’d probably go for the M8 based off specifically that
when you make this comparison, you have to show that the Apple display is whether or not using the LG panel, because Apple did not make screens and was using LG panels or Samsung OLED screen as in iPhone. The Retina display was made by LG. Apple just use the Retina name, because it was has higher pixel density than apple previous displays. A side note: Apple did not have a record of creating its own parts or naming, but marketing as though they created it. iOS is Cisco router OS. Apple just licence the name to use it.
I have been using a 55" TCL 4K UHD TV that I purchased back in 2018 as my monitor that only cost $699. It supports HDR 10 as well as Dolby Vision. As far as the display quality I it would fall several steps above the Samsung but probably is not as good as the Apple, one of the things I have always been impressed with is the TCL's ability to have rich dark blacks that rival OLED displays. I use it with my high end gaming/workstation PC, as well as an XBox One X, I even use it to cast content from my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra using Samsung Smart View as well as DEX in a wireless set up. At the moment I am typing this comment from 12 feet away sitting on my sofa using my S21 Ultra and the text is very sharp and is easily read. I can even do the samething with my older Dell Precision 6800M laptop running Windows 10. As far as the speakers, they suck but all of my audio from everything is sent to my 7.1 home theater sound system. When using my desktop I have color calibrated the output and I get very good color output for photo editing as well as video editing using DaVinci Resolve 17. In the near future I plan on getting one of TCL's new 75" 8K sets.
Basically they just put a 32" 4K Smart TV into a monitor form with a webcam I always have the question in the past few years can I use my 4k TV as the monitor because they are much cheaper and bigger Now this hybrid machine may attract a lot of people.
@@The_MEMEphis Sadly ultrawides all have way too low resolution to really be any good. The PPI of all the ultrawides are quite bad, and when it comes to computer monitors the resolution is far more important than just the size (a 5K 27" screen is way better than a 50" 4k screen as an example).
I own both and moved into an office recently so had to use an M8. My preference is the M8. Its insane value for the price and strains my eyes less thanks to its matte display.
without seeing this comparison i would have been very tempted by this. But im also thinking in 4, 5 years time, m8 worth maybe $50 - $200 whereas could probably still get $600 - $800 for the apple studio display

Well, yeah. If each of these features cost $100 alone, thats enough to shave more than 1.4K off Sammy’s display price, lol. Math! Not to say Apple Studio Display is really worth the price if you’re not a quality enthusiast and willing to pay the hefty price for a serious pro creative work!
@@fmax30000 Sure there's more quality w/ the Studio Display, but it's still laughably overpriced. You could essentially get the same display and build quality buying an iMac for $200 more a few weeks ago...and of course that includes a whole computer. ORRRR for $1100 less if you were to buy a 2015 5K iMac for $500 on eBay. Basically the same display. It's just too expensive for not really anything special. The $999 Thunderbolt Display was already high. This one is 60% more a few years later. Of course technically it is more advanced (5K vs. 1440p, although lacking Ethernet!), but a few years later, it should be!
27” is just not enough and I’m surprised Apple went with that. Even my 2019 iMac (27”) only serves as a second screen for editing. For my Mac Studio, I just configured a 43” Dell Ultrasharp & 32” BenQ (EW3270U) plus a 27” Dell Ultrasharp for 90 degree use. I don’t know how creators happily work on laptops or relatively small screens - I need all the timeline real estate I can get!
If it was a 6K at 32" or 5K at 27" with good speakers would be a great alternative to Studio Display since it looks better than the other options in the market. But as a monitor with the apple way of scaling the resolution is a no go. Apple computers needs a 1440p or 5K on 27" or 6K at 32" monitors in order to use them properly. Especially on 32" you need 6K (is the way Apple scales the resolution on the MacOS as i mentioned before). Also IP3 and RGB accuracy are awful for use as a productivity monitor. Also the fact that is only 60Hz with no Display port or HDMI 2.1 makes it also not suitable for use with Xbox Series X or PS5 or a Windows PC but is good enough only for XBOX Series S. If Samsung or any other brand can make a mini led or OLED or QD-Oled or even an IPS with 5K resolution at 27" or a 6K resolution at 32" with minimum 120Hz refresh rate, VRR, Thunderbolt 3 or 4, HDMI 2.1 or Display port, HDR, Dolby Vision and good speaker set then it would be a Studio Display or Pro Display or any other monitor killer. I would easily pay double or triple the price for this kind of display because it would be actually usable as a monitor for Mac, a TV and as a great console gaming display at the same time. If you are on the other hand a casual windows user and you have an Xbox Series S or any other older console is a good option as it is. If you are a Mac Studio or MacBook, or Mac Mini or a Gaming PC or a Next Gen Console user just stay away.
Samung M8 has 168 ppi - that will cause scaling issues on Mac because it's too far away from either 120 or 220 ppi. Apple Studio Display has 218 ppi and is therefore perfectly optimized for Apples UI. Macs and 4k displays are not a very good combination. 5K resolution (5120 x 2880) has to be scaled down to half (2560 x 1440) and is then re-scaled to the actual resolution of the monitor. You will see this in performance issues in 3D or video rendering.
2 ปีที่แล้ว
That’s true. When non default scaling is used, and with 32 4K it should be 3008x1692 to match 109PPI of 27” 1440p then performance drops in certain apps like e.g. Blender. People who work mostly with text, programmers etc. may not notice this.
At @9:41 when the displays are side by side with the webpage open, why does the white webpage background on the studio display look “clearer” whereas the whites on the Samsung looks kinda dull or washed out?
comparing tomatoes and apples... I don't think they compete each other. Both are targeting different market segments (pro users vs normal users). Like comparing Raspberry against M1... is does not make much sense. Sorry guys :(
Maybe but the XDR is the most pro. But I think who are the people who would buy this? Not gamers, not for entertainment at that price and features maybe for doing some daily work? Again not at that price. That lives pro users who can go for that price. The pro users are also segmented
@@adolfoecs you’re over thinking it to the point you’re calling the Pro Display (most pro). It’s simple, pro displays are for anyone who are making money off of their careers and use of equipment, normal people consume media and content. Apple made two displays for each, it’s just that apple is a greed machine and knows without a doubt, people will pay 1,600 for technology created a decade ago just because it’s on a new shell. Don’t make excuses for them.
218 ppi vs 140 ppi. I simply don't understand how people can consider these displays comparable. The studio display is in a different league. If samsung or anyone else makes a 218 ppi display, I'll be the first to buy it. Seriously, why are they making such low resolution displays?
Absolutely. I think a lot of people who don't value a 218 ppi display have never had one so they don't know what they're missing. And you won't necessarily see the benefits by just looking at it at the Apple Store. It's after using a 5K screen for a while and then going back to 4K. It just looks wrong--on both a Mac or PC. I've had a 5K iMac since 2015 and I can't go back.
Samsung could have saved money by not including the garbage mic, webcam, and speakers. And this seems like their approach for their new jumbo tablet. Rather than going for performance and quality, they just made it big.
I like the reviewed panel a lot, though I am inclined to hope for a really amazing large panel display from Apple. I presently DO use a Samsung 49" 4K display and an old Thunderbolt Monitor for my second display. This is a lot of screen real estate and it is really nice for music production jobs. Generally, I am interested in such panel sizes - my eyes are not the best, so the larger screens seem to help me get my stuff done in comfort. Great review!!
I tried the M8 display and I hated it. The Samsung built in Operating system is just not worth dealing with. Especially with all of the built in nonsense that can't be fully disabled. I found that when using it, the colors looked crazy washed out in creative interfaces compared to my MSI Ps341wu. Maybe I got a bad panel, but the samsung just made working in creative applications irritating, as nothing ever looked right compared to the monitor running right next to it.
Thinking to replace my late 2015 5k iMac before it becomes absolutely obsolete. The latest iMacs are not quite there, but the studio display plus a Mac mini is also not quite there either. Next gen Mac mini and one of these cheaper Samsung monitors might be a reasonable contender but I love my 5k, dense ppi and the the glass screen...maybe wait it out and let my iMac depreciate to zero
I was in this boat and just got a base model studio max and the apple 5k display with the intention of upgrading to a mini with M2 or studio/pro with M2 in the future
Better picture, WAY better audio and better build quality for the Studio but not a thousand dollar better... so the smartest choice between this 2? The Samsung. By far.
The most value yea the Samsung display but you gotta think about other displays that are actually able to compete with the studio display costing so much more than it
@@supersop1367 Yeah, there LG ultrafine or the Asus ProArt r better than the samsung in display specs and closer to the Studio, being the Studio more expensive.
There is literally no comparison, You could Buy the Samsung M8 Monitor (Larger Screen, Height Adjustable And Matte), A Good Pair Of Speakers (That Will Be Better Than The Studio Display), A Good Mechanical Wireless Keyboard And A Very Good Wireless Mouse And A Macbook Air And Still Save Money Than A Studio Display With A Height Adjustable Stand And Matte Screen.
Not really sure why anyone would choose the M8. There are plenty of better and more affordable 4k screens on the market. Who honestly wants to use the smart TV feature? Comparing the M8 to the Apple display is just clickbait - of course a 5k display with a better screen & build quality is more expensive. Compare Apple’s display to other 5k screens and you’ll find it’s quite competitive.
The Samsung M8 looks overpriced. It's 32" but only 4K. It's a TV display, which are typically cheaper than monitors. $700 could buy you a much nicer 4k monitor with a higher pixel density
Excellent review sir. You had a nice scoop with this one. It is not as good as Apple but hey $699 and it is already matte and height adjustable. Over here that would run you about €2250 for the apple with the stand and matte options.
About the camera "If apple did that, they'd probably charge a few hundred dollars extra for it". More like at least 1000$. I mean we're talking about the company that charges 700$ for wheels and 400$ for a height adjustment system for their displays. So... I doubt it'd be less.
Thanks for this nice comparison! The camera of the M8 is better but the sound of the Apple Studio Display is superior. People always talk about the wide edges of the Apple Studio Display, but these remain in its entirety one black border, while the M8 does have a fine border, but when watching videos it seems like a double black and white border, which bothers me. I still prefer the Apple Studio Display. This review has convinced me to order the Apple Studio Display.
I usauly use a JBL speaker and a HyperX mic so those things don't bother me. I love the build quality and the Mac but for the price I would go with Samsung. Great video.
Thank you for the great video. I got the studio display and no regrets. The fact the Samnsug is 32"" and has lower ppi is not good if you come from working on macbooks and imacs, you will be dissapointed. Color accuracy is another thing, I have never had to calibrate my imac for 5 years and having an external non apple monitor I had to calibrate several times and the color is never right. Studio display is for content creators, maybe apple will release a cheaper version for the regular user.
The apple monitor is suitable with you, but not all regular user like that. Base on the work, they will choose appropriate monitor. I don't like imac design until now. I love Dell monitor.
If you want to critically edit photos, there's one thing in a display you really need to know: does it do dynamic contrast or not? In LCD panels, a backlight shines through the LCD layer that acts like an old-fashioned color transparency or slide. Way back, this used to be done with a couple fluorescent tubes around the edges, but has been replaced by a grid of LED lights (on a printed circuit board, I guess). There are way less LEDs than pixels - in OLED displays, each subpixel is an LED lamp. So these LCD panels like in this case here have the LED backlight grid. What dynamic contrast does is look at the content displayed on screen and reduce LED power behind regions that are very dark or black. But this is no precise. In motion pictures you do not generally notice this imperfection and it makes movies look better. But when you zoom in and out of your stills in Lightroom Classic you'll see artifacts, or not, depending on how big a dark zone accidentally is and how it accidentally aligns with the backlit LED grid. As to color space, different standards exist and sRGB is probably the most limited one - and the best known. Color space involves dynamic range too but frequently people forget that and only look at "bits per color channel color depth" Well, bit depth defines gradation and more bits facilitate a more subtle, more smooth transition in and between nuances - they say nothing about the darkest and lightest tints on your display. Many photographers work in Adobe RGB that has a bigger color space than sRGB. The size of the color space offered by a display aside, its ability to render nuances is really very important. We can easily convert a relatively low bit depth raw image to 32 bits per channel in Photoshop and be flabbergasted by the improvement (or not, in the case of a bad display). So, forget dynamic contrast and get the highest static contrast. And, depending on the quality of the LCD cells, you may find that one display has better contour sharpness than another (brand/model). This is important to you when you want to assess how sharp your shots are or when you need to adjust "sharpening". The contour sharpness may be influenced by your operating system and the drivers it uses. In Windows you can improve the alignment of ClearType (MS version of TrueType fonts) with your display, going through dialog steps asking you "which of these 6 looks best to you?" repeatedly, until the optimum is found. Not sure Apple has this and not sure this fine-tuning influences contour sharpness in the rendering of other things on the display, though.
@@gamerboycallum9962 Yeah, if you only game! Even gamers don’t tend to choose them! Actually everything is wrong with that old tech. IPS: Wider viewing angles Color range Color representation Faster response times High refresh rates Yeah, only that, not much, lol!
@@fmax30000 Samsung QLED (VA) slays the general IPS panels in everything but viewing angles though. Too bad there isn't a non-curved monitor oriented version of those (yet).
@@fmax30000 You're exagerating. Viewing angles is the only drawback that matters, color calibration can be equivalent, response times and refresh rates are faster in VA. The biggest advantage to VA is the 3000:1 contrast ratio vs 1000:1 of IPS and it does make a huge difference in movies and videos, I know because I have one of each on my desktop and I go out of my way to watch all the content in the VA, it's just better no questions asked especially in a dark room. Frankly I thought the viewing angles would be a deal breaker but turns out on a desktop you never need good viewing angles so it doesn't matter.
Its fine watching a review, but I highly recommend seeing both screens in the wild and try and do a side by side comparison before purchase, I've been looking at various monitors recently by physically going into the stores, and the Studio was the only one that made me think wow that is amazing compared to OLED tvs and monitors. the extra 1000 pixels make a huge difference, currently I have a 4k LG, its quite old tbh. If you're fairly serious, about photography and video then take a physical look. Specs are one thing but the execution is another. (The Studio's camera was not good. its does have centre stage though.)
i have the samsung and the quality compared to an apple display is not even close. I gave it to my daughter in college, she likes the smart features and remote for her room and I don't need those in office. Happy to be looking at a sharp display again while working all day..
Great review that covers a lot of aspects. How is the M8 and/or the ASD working with gaming consoles, such as the PS5? I know the ASD needs a tb4 input... but does it work? I know the M8 would surely work with the ps5 but it doesn't give 4K/120 Hz.
Damn, the Studio Display absolutely DESTROYED the M8 on sound quality, good lord that was an intense difference. Still not enough to justify the price difference, but damn that was impressive.
At 6:25 you breezed over the connection to a Mac! You showed a Displayport setting. THERE IS NO DISPLAYPORT ON THIS MONITOR! Also, there is no Displayport on the Mac. AGAIN, HOW DID YOU DO THAT?
Samsung's marketing team did a good job convincing people to compare their product with the Studio Display, even though the Studio Display has different intentions
Samsung released and announced this display way before apple released the studio display. So if anything, apple was the one who forced these comparisons
You all are responsible for me ending up with this piece of average hardware. Very poor color management if you use a Mac. Also, the images are not very crisp like it used to be with my LG 4k
I've been hoping to see a video on this - I can't believe you guys did it first! THANK YOU. Now that I've watched the video, I can't imagine buying the Apple display over the M8. If BenQ could figure out TB connectors etc, they would be tops but this one sounds nearly perfect for almost everyone's needs.
I think the video call sound and visual quality on the Samsung looks like garbage. Yes, the Apple display call video is overlay soft looking, but even so, I think it looks better and the microphone is clearly drastically better. That being said, $1600 for the apple display is bonkers.
Agreed. As "meh" as the Studio Display cam is, it's still heaps better than the Samsung. And the mic on the Studio Display is leagues better (the Samsung is way too "sharp" and "clicky".
You get what you pay for I suppose. That Samsung webcam sounded horrible. The Studio Display is a class act, but it's way overpriced. If that display had been $700, Apple wouldn't be able to keep them on the shelves.
Which display would YOU rather keep? Comment below!

I think you guys put the wrong clip (should be showing Studio Display not m8 tho) in 10:05. Just a friendly reminder.
You know Apple is like “dam, we could have the webcam separately and charged extra for it”

Wow I was just going to return my new iMac for a m8 and Mac mini but now I think I will keep the iMac 😅🎉🎉🎉
its all about the image quality, the text crispness......NOTHING comes close to it,.
The LG is mentioned ,because it is the Apple Studio Display. Its just re-branded and modified by Apple but the core is identical.
@@mowtow90 True, LCD inside Apple Studio and former LG Ultrafine 5K - is exactly the same - just put into the alu-body.

The aluminium iMac has been around for nearly 15 years, yet other companies still struggle to make simple, elegant looking monitors?

Man, the M8 is an excellent value! I love the wireless aspect of it.

Yea right…
The difference on the close up is so obviously clearer on the Apple display - not sure how anyone can look past this. It's partly because it's 4K and the Apple is 5K and so this is a stupid comparison
I had the M8 for about three months and will be returning it. The Apple Samsung integration and the experience isn't as seamless as I'd prefer. Will invest in a Studio Display now.

Why do reviewers compare 4k non-Apple monitors to Apple 5k/6k monitors as if they are in the same league?
Because it doesn’t make that much of a difference tbh. You can find 4K monitors that trounce the studio in literally every respect and even match pixel density if you’re willing to shrink slightly.
Because they are in “the same league” meaning: even though they are way different, they are kinda the same product just released by other brands.

Think different! Tim Cook continues in the same vein as Steve Jobs would. Genius as special and inimitable.
It would be like comparing a Pixel 5a to an iPhone 13 pro. i personally love the studio display, but you can get 2 M8 TVs basically for the price of 1 studio display. that’s how i look at it. so i’d probably go for the M8 based off specifically that
when you make this comparison, you have to show that the Apple display is whether or not using the LG panel, because Apple did not make screens and was using LG panels or Samsung OLED screen as in iPhone.
TV is way different than monitor bro. We sit closer to monitor.
I think the Mateview 28" is a closer comparison if you looking for something like the Studiodisplay but don't want to spent 1600 bucks

Now this is the monitor summary I was looking for! Thank you.
Atlast, some one who explained the performance drops on 27 4k monitor.
I ❤️ my M5 Samsung. Flawless integration with Airplay on all my Apple devices. Also comes with the AppleTV app.
I think you guys put the wrong clip (should be showing Studio Display not m8 tho) in 10:05. Just a friendly reminder.
Sorry guys :(
Apple's XDR is for pros, the Studio display is for normal/pro-wannabes. You're giving Apple too much credit right now.
Samsung m8 is currently $521 on the Samsung website with student verification! Awesome deal, can't wait for it to arrive!
