Mickey always had such a clean, perfectly pitched, well in the upper register type of voice; as well as the delivery he gave during live performances. He definitely was never given the recognition he deserved for the outstanding talent & vocal gift he was given at birth, and practiced in-depth to hone it into becoming of the best front-man rock band vocalists of the 70's-80's era.

This is truly astonishing for a live rendition of this. Not many people can sing like Mickey Thomas. But if you get a chance, definitely go check out the studio cut of this, although this is pretty close, but it's just a bit better fidelity and he hangs up on that E5 quite a bit more at the end rather than in this he chose to stay down on the B4 for some of that, although definitely he still ended up there a lot. But you would love it I'm positive.

I got to see Starship at the legendary Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA (made famous by the fatal plane crash of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper in the 50's). They did a great performance. I wanted to meet Mickey Thomas just to express how amazing his voice is. He was the only member of the band that refused to meet their fans.
There were 3 of us that could see him behind the stage in a room. I read his lips and he said "they're just staring at me" and the guy he said it to slammed the door shut. Very disappointed he was such a snob. (But I still love his voice and those songs)!

Not to say there aren't any better out there, but if there are, I haven't heard them yet, and I've been in/around the music business almost all my life, and yes, that was just my opinion ... @@patriciameyer8798 There's proof right there, opinions are like assholes ... everybody's got one. You just happen to be on the low side of the argument. Not that your opinion doesn't matter, it most certainly does, but you would be in the minority making that argument.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mickey, Jane being my favorite song of his, but as far as writing skills, output and sales goes, Steve Perry blows him out of the water. So, while I can appreciate your fondness and devotion to Mickey, I think the world would pretty much agree, that Steve is the better, more accomplished, talented and influential singer of the two.
Steve didn't join Journey to JUST be a singer, he wrote or co-wrote most of their songs, which is why they seemed tailor-made for him. Mickey did not.
Additionally, when live, Steve is the most consistent ... bringing studio polish and quality to every show he does but this is where Mickey falters. Some people think that sounding a little off when performing live makes them more "rough" or endearing, but when I go to a concert, I'm usually not interested in hearing a new or rougher version of the songs I love. I want to SEE them do what I could only hear them do before, so singing a tune in a different way or changing up the speed or syncopation really grinds on me ... a LOT !!!
And, that's MY opinion. Sorry 🙏...

Grace was Jefferson Airplane's second female singer. She replaced Signe Anderson who only recorded one album with the Airplane. (Ironically Anderson died on the same day as Paul Kantner.)

Such a great rock song! Pretty hard rock for that band. That guy’s voice is right up there with Brad Delp’s of Boston. The guitar player, Craig Chaquico, is amazing as well.

When they added Thomas, and guitarist Craig Chicaro (He was only a puppy, but as u saw, could already play his azz off) thier sound became a lot more power-driven, and it was all good. crucial to the 80's success.

What a great song, one of Starship's best! The unbelievable voice of Mickey Thomas, and the great Craig Chaqico ( one of my fave solos). Craig is soooo good, he is into acoustic stuff the last I heard...the great music I grew up with, not much from today's artists can compete! ❤️

Another of theirs to try, where the lady singer, Grace Slick, sings duet with Mickey Thomas, is Stranger. Watch the official studio track, you get to see them singing it. Great vocals, great song, and you see her magnetic charisma (and she looks like Frankenstein's bride!😂).

That's one great song! I'm sure that Grace sang lead on more than one song during that concert. As for the lead singer here, I'd say that he is very good, almost as good as Burton Cummings.

I’m willing to be you’ve head him before without realizing. He had great success in the 80s with hits such as “Sara,” “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us,” and “We Built This City.” And his voice still sounds the same in 2023 as in the video from 40+ years ago.

Jefferson Starship was originally a side project of Jefferson Airplane guitarist Paul Kantner. They made one trippy sci-fi album in 1970 called Blows Against The Empire, which did include members of the Airplane, the Dead and CSNY. When the Airplane broke up a few years later, Kantner, Grace Slick and Airplane founder Marty Balin put together a more commercial AM radio band and recycled the Jefferson Starship name. They went through several personnel changes, and the line-up included veteran rockers like David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service), Johny Barbata (The Turtles, CSNY) and Aynsley Dunbar (John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Mothers Of Invention and a zillion others). I'm more of a fan of the Airplane than the Starship, but the Mickey Thomas era of late 70s/early 80s is my favourite incarnation of the Starship, with a sound that was heavily influenced by Boston - hell, they basically copied them, but in a good way. The piano intro of Jane was their answer to the piano intro of Cold As Ice by Foreigner.

    • @OddTimeMan
      @OddTimeMan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Grace was not the original lead singer. Jefferson Airplane's first album had a different singer. Grace came along after she left the band. That's why the band changed their name to just "Starship" in the '80s...because no original members were left in the band.

My lovely Beth I remember when this came out, I was a teen testing “ new groups” for me.
When you’re a music lover you become a judge telling to yourself “ this is good, this isn’t “ “ I like this group-singer or I don’t like it right? . You skipped those vocals technique or that guy - girls are using that instruments 🫣🫣🫣 in wrong way. Noooo you only is waiting for the musicians start the song and HIT IT ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️HIT MY FACE REALLY HARD ‼️‼️‼️‼️😜😜😜😜 just like that. The only thing that you need is………… enjoy the good sounds without more complications 😛😛😛😋😋😋 agree???
    ❤❤❤❤
🍀🍀 I think the best gift for you is ……….. yourself.
Think and check your progress through this year, watching and hearing others performers that were new to you. The many times that you laughed and smiled seeing them. And at the same time I learned from you many things that were new for me.
    Merry Christmas 🎁🎄 🎄🎄🍾🍾🍾

Beth during the pandemic a group of musicians did a cover of this song and it is impressive. The band consisted of Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre , Winery Dogs) on drums , Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake , Trans Siberian Orchestra) on guitar and a relative new comer by the name of Dino Jelusick on vocals , bass and keys. He is going to be the touring vocalist for Whitesnake since David Coverdale has retired from touring. Dino was in Trans Siberian Orchestra which is how he met Joel. Check out their version of this song it is spectacular.

@@simonwarr7246 No problem there are very few singers that would even attempt to take on that song. Then add to it him playing bass & keys as well. He's 27 yrs old from Croatia. He's the best hard rock singer i've heard in 15 yrs.
